I think the problem is the macbook air is now the same design, if you look at when they stopped making base macbooks (2017) , they introduced a new design for the macbook air a year later (2018), and the 1inch screen difference probably isn't worth making two laptops with basically the same performance

      @@KingVulpes Yeah, maybe.
I do think the difference between carrying around the M1 Air and the 12 inch MacBook is very noticeable though. Especially when I do a large amount of walking about with a smaller backpack.

I just bought an early 2016 model for £150 and couldn't be happier with it. If someone told me that this thing came out this year I would believe them. The size is perfect and the thinness. Just for watching TH-cam and typing some documents now and again, it's perfectly serviceable even now. I'm going to use open core legacy patcher to see how it runs Ventura or Sonoma. Mine supports Monterey natively which runs fine, but id prefer to be on newer software if possible
But for the price I paid for it, even if it only lasts me a year because the SSD kills itself (which is a notorious issue on these models), for 150 quid, can you really complain? Does everything you''d expect from an 8 year old laptop now at this point. Keyboard on mine has had very light usage and feels really nice to type on. The previous owner kept it in pristine condition. Original battery too with only 196 cycles on it when I picked it up! Web browsing isn't even slow. I bet if you tried using a windows laptop from the same era for the same price it would be borderline unusable

I've just done a battery swap on one of these; easy enough, watch the flex cable as it breaks easily. Great display but I wasn't in love with the keyboard, and I seemed to be experiencing not much clickiness in the 'force' trackpad.

I would love them to come out with a 12" MacBook now. Would go nicely with the 14" and 16". I had one for several years and loved it for being on the go. To be fair, if someone is expecting it to be a video editing bay, the expectation is wrong. Also, when running something more demanding, it's a bit better plugged in than on battery.

I don't own a mac device but there was someone who was kind enough to let me use her MacBook, It's a 12-inch MacBook 2015, It has a 1.1 Ghz Intel Core M processor, 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB storage
It's running OS X 10.11.6 El Capitan, It's outdated I know but there's a reason why we couldn't update it to big sur because the connection there was very slow and it would take forever to download, it would just fail sometimes
More notes: She bought the 12-inch Macbook 2015 from launch day and the battery condition isn't very good, She told me that it drains very fast on simple tasks and also being idle. And also she told me that she's getting a new MacBook Pro later this year.

The MacBook you borrowed is the same model as mine.
It is not too bad for me running on Big Sur. It’s a shame you couldn’t get it to update.

It works extremely well for all Office and online tasks. But the 2017 version with an i5 is much better, as it runs Ventura, which had some important new macOS features in many apps. Sometimes some programs like Excel take a while to start but once they’re running lighting fast, just as fast as on on my one year old MacBook Pro (which is almost weird TBH). I also think it’s great that you can run Windows 10 on it, also works super well. The biggest advantage is how portable it is and how comfortable the keyboard is, it’s clicky and extremely comfortable to write on.

You are right in saying the 2017 version is quite a bit quicker and more compatible, but this little 2015 MacBook still does the basics. I don’t really need it to be more powerful or do anything more complicated as I use a much newer Mac for that (M1 Air). As you say, the lightness and thinness of these things just can’t be matched.

If you can stretch to it, picking up an M1 MacBook Air is well worth it. Even a second hand one. It is far superior to the 12” in every way except for portability.

If you want portability and a very nice screen and speakers get the 12 inch.
If you want anything else get the Air. The Air will be quite a bit more powerful and reliable, with probably better battery life as well. Its screen is not good at all.
I love the 12 inch, but it is not powerful at all.
Another option (sorry to confuse things further) would be a 13 inch MacBook Pro from 2015. They are really good for the money.

12 inch all day. The 2017 MacBook looks outdated. If someone told me the 12" came out this year I would believe you

I got this one from a second hand store in Japan. The stores are all over the place here, and I just got lucky finding this Mac in good condition.
