I heat up the end of an old chisel and when it's red hot, run it over the eyes and claws and it leaves a nice black shiny finish as the wood surface kind of melts and scotches. Good idea to practice on a scrap piece first though.
Jesus! So beautiful. My first owl looks like a cross between Frankenstein's monster and a hummingbird. This is so inspiring.
