    This was back in the days when standard tuning was a little less standard. So many of these bluesmen played the guitar in whatever way they taught themselves, and if you picked up their guitar, there was no guarantee that you could even play it. For example, Albert King played with the strings backwards and in an open tuning. Wonderful authenticity, pure soul.

    Interesting that Gatemouth Brown is playing a Rickenbacker. In 1966 it was more associated with the jangle rock like The Beatles and The Byrds, not so much the blues.

    • @craigbrowning9448
      @craigbrowning9448 27 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

      Jazz Guitarist/Harmonica Player Toots Thielemans played a Rickenbacker for a time also.

    • @dirtylemon3379
      @dirtylemon3379 27 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      @ That’s right. Supposedly John Lennon saw a picture of Toots with his Rickenbacker 325 and he liked the look so he bought one. It then became iconic.

    • @harveycan5820
      @harveycan5820 27 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@dirtylemon3379 I think Toots played another model, but when Lennon went to the music store they only had a 325 Mapleglo with the Accent or Kaufmann vibrato so he took that one. Later he had it painted black and had a Bigsby installed.

    • @harveycan5820
      @harveycan5820 27 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      I think its a 50s model with 3 toaster-top pickups. It's hard to see but it looks like the pickguard may not the split level type, nor is there a 5th knob to blend the neck and middle pickups. The tailpiece is not the big R nor does it look like a trapeze. I think it is set up for the Accent vibrato, that's the tailpiece--but i dont see the arm! He has the guutar cord wrapped around it, though. So it might be one of the "tulip" designs or an early 345? 3 denotes 300 series, 4 denotes three pickups, 5 denotes factory installed vibrato. 345.
      Or-- it might be a 50s Capri model.
      Rics are not usually a blues or RnB guitar but the pickups have a lot of clarity with both sparkle and warmth, depending on settings. Plus the design is unrivaled for cool space age looks! Maybe he just dug the style!

      There is killer footage of rappers, Biggie Smalls for example, rapping on street corners with no mike, no effects no amplification, no stage...Just human beatbox accompaniment..Of course there is plenty of trash music out there, but I don't think you listen to enough rap to know goods from bad....At the time this was recorded, there were plenty of people putting this music down as being too simplistic compared to the Jazz era.

    Terrific. Local TV is always looking for content. Capitalizing on artists that were more or less local, this one was stunning. Note about Gatemouth playing a Rick-I was fortunate enough to see him several times and he always made whatever he was playing sound good. I saw him bring a Fender baritone, followed by a Guild, then an SG. 3 songs in a row. What a musician.

    This was a great series, just about the only place to see/hear artists like this on TV/video. I'm happy that this channel has a small collection of them, because due to the name it's very difficult to search for, here or anywhere. I believe the entire series is or was available on DVD. If that's true I hope someone takes the time to put them up, ideally all in one place.
    Side note: I was a blues guitar player in the 80's and saw Gatemouth Brown live several times. Got to chat with him a few times. What a great, underappreciated musician, with a fantastic band every time. I even sold the man weed once! At the time I was unaware of his involvement in this show...
