- This is by far my favourite Haka ever - I remember watching this live on TV and thinking it was better than a movie! France defying New Zealand in this way was a blood rushing experience. On top of that, France won 20-18!
Was France really disrepectful when they decided to face the haka that close ? In my opinion they actually honored it by accepting the challenge

+OPierreLouisO Not disrespectful at all. Quite the opposite. It's a challenge laid down for the opposition to accept and to bring a tough and fair fight. I am half English and half New Zealand, and I was ashamed to see England turn their back on the Haka back in the 90s that one time. Now, I actually feel that despite the Haka and the other war dances that other teams do (Fiji, Tonga, Samoa) looking great, it is a bit of an advantage to those teams. But it's still fun and some of the responses from the other teams make it all the worthwhile. France are always great, and when Wales did the 2 minute long staredown after one Haka, it was epic.

Accepting the challenge of the Haka and defeating it is the greatest achievement in Rugby, not many get to experience it.

One of the great international sporting spectacles....sadly the close proximity has been outlawed by IRB. If there is no physical violence, why outlaw the closeness...has anyone watched ice hockey? "Hey,lets just let them fight, because people like it.". This was a great Haka. And the French faced it with poise and class. VivA Le France.....And I am a kiwi :)

Wow, a stream of memories just came flowing back. I was at this game, in Cardiff i believe. Seeing France (I'm half french) beat New Zealand (My girlfriend's nationality and arguably one of the best teams in the world) in my hometown of Cardiff (the other half of me is Welsh) was one hell of an opportunity. Definitely a game to remember.

Saw a picture of Chabal at the most intense moment of his stare, truly frightening!
We in France have immense respect for the ABs and LOVE the haka, all of us.

I agree with you. What I don’t like about New Zeland teams performing the Haka is the fact that they just do it in sports that they are good at or have a decent team (Rubby or Basketball); why don’t they perform this in Football (soccer) games against France or England?.

The Haka is so superior to any warrior posturing that exists in American professional football. It it the most interesting sports ritual that I have ever witnessed. It is right up there with the changing of the guards at the Indian-Pakistani border at Wagah.

For people that think that haka is not intimidating. It's easy to say watching it at your television screen but when you face several tons of muscles and power in front of you making a cememonial for confrontation, then it's something else. And yes, All Blacks are the best at rugby but that day we were slightly better and Chabal was more impressive and scary than haka itself. :)
Yeah...making faces, slapping your legs and doing a silly little jungle dance worked great againt British Enfield 1853s. It's a dumb, primitive cannibal dance that doesn't automatically earn respect outside of the grass huts it's practiced in.

New Zealand won today but congrats to the French for staying in the game until the very end! In the end, playing at home really helped NZ because I've seen some better teams over the years than what they came into this WC with.

Haka are performed before any major challenge by Maori traditionally and New Zealanders in general. Before school exams, at funerals, weddings and in preparation for battle. Haka is a posture chant with words telling a story and actions that tell another that can also emphasis the words. Usually haka is a lament that calls upon our ancient ones to assist with the upcoming challenge, war haka can have tones of intimidation to test the mettle of the challenger. How can it be disrespectful ?

Ireland did a sort of mini-incursion with a slow-moving wedge into the Haka, I think it was in the Eighties when they had a CRAP team and “slow-moving” was all they did. Obviously they still got slaughtered.
