as a Welsh man it was epic to watch and hyped me up....but inside I was like "you guys defo going to feel that challenge in the morning" P.S the Welsh love New Zealand and your practically perfect rugby playing and always will
Oh ok but honestly us irish sang over it at the world Cup the kiwi fans went mad lost all respect to for ye that day. The all blacks are huge over here always respected look at when they do the haka in ireland we don't be that loud
I have to agree in part with.our Irish cousin not NZ as a whole.tour awesome but your RFU the year we did our Anthem after the Haka and they went mad, calling us out for being disrespectful, unfortunately i think as this is a war cry the disrespect is not expecting a response, when We visit NZ fine.we play by the rfu rules, but in my opinion set foot on someone's land and make a challenge it deserves a response, i also find a little racism involved as other Pacific Nations literally have 'haka off's' and contrary to modern belief racism isn't white v everyone else, it's the exclusion of one group, by another but again this ironical is only the suits, my personal experience of Polynesian people has always been positive my only grumble would be most are funnier than me
I'm Irish, born and bred here in Ireland. I've long admired Welsh rugby since 1970's through to today. I've got to say the Welsh response that afternoon was nothing less than superb, to the haka. Wales stood their ground and rightly so. You play Wales in Cardiff, you're in their territory and you respect the history that is Wales and their rugby. Those Welsh players and their manager Gatland responded the right way. I was in Lansdown Road in 1989 when the Irish team marched up to the New Zealand and eyeballed them. That was superb but this response by Wales was as good if not better. Love Wales and their rugby!
I think at one of the home nations matches they stood and blew kisses at the All Blacks - it was quite a while ago so I believe letters of complaint were written afterwards!
Gee I remember watching this live & watching it now still gives me goosebumps. All respect to the Welsh team for standing up to the Kiwis. What an awesome way to start a game. From a Kiwi.
Two of the greatest rugby teams in the world as measured by the passion, commitment and love for the game from both players and fans - you rarely see other sports start with this level of emotion and intensity. Awesome!
To be honest mate, i think after somebody does that infront of you, it probably takes very once of self control to not smash straight into them and rend them to pulp.
I'm Greek 🇬🇷 and whenever I see Haka dance l always get so moved! These customs must pass on to the next generations! They're amazing and always give me chills!
Im an Indian and the only reason i really watch rugby is because of the haka. Its absolutely brilliant to see such spirit! Hats off to the Welsh team also!
I'm not a rugby fan by any stretch of the imagination. However I remember watching this live and still to this day gives me chills. Proper amazing sporting moment.
Awesome challenge and response. What a great way to start a match between these two great rugby nations. Obviously the crowd loved it. I would have loved to have been there. The Haka is a challenge and also a sign of respect as someone else has mentioned. Haka's are used on many occasions for respect. (And I'm half Welsh half Kiwi) Keep this tradition going!!
It made my spine shivver on the day... (lucky enough to have been sitting on the half way line with some good mates! ... If you listen you can hear me. I'm the one shouting Wales, Wales, Wales...) and it's made my spine shiver today again!
used to hate it when I was on starboard watch on the bridge and the port watch saw the wales before me and the first mate used to shout wales wales wales and he was from Dundee
The crowd was so loud that day in cardiff the noise levels still ringing in my ears and the haka and challenge that day still get goosepimples . Passion and sporting from both teams
I'm an Englishman and didn't know about this stand off until I've just watched it now on Rugbys funniest moments, so I've searched TH-cam to look for the video. Pure class from the Welsh 👏👏👏👏👏👏
That is awesome I am so proud to be Welsh even though I have lived in Australia for 19 years. Now that shows passion from both sides. I have total respect for both teams. Cymru am Byth
@MrBigboyk You know what mate, it was a great moment. I'm and Englishman and it makes me smile to know that there are still sports out there in which people can be proud of their nationality without taking it to extremes. I know I compare football and rugby all the time but at least in rugby you can see people from both nationalities sitting in the same stand together enjoying the game without the fear of being attacked because of where you're from.
I remember watching this like it was yesterday , and I was screaming at the tele " don't you move " "don't you dare move" , you'd swear I was the coach , the whole thing gave me goosebumps , I felt like I was in the rocky film , every time Shane Williams got tackled I screamed at him " get up you son of a b**ch cos the Welsh love you
I cannot believe that there are people around the world who hate the Haka!!! How the hell can this be possible? I cannot imagine a world cup without these guys
I don't like it. I find it disrespectful doing that in someone elses country and pretty cocky to want the others also to move away first. I would just get on with my warming up, not being bothered by it at all. Also as a spectator I just have to laugh because to me it seems so pathethic. So we are all different. I still think the AB are the best team ever and great rugbyplayers, nothing against them their country or whatever. But for me the haka is a complete waste of time and somehow it seems to introduce some inequality??
As a New Zealander and a Maori i would just like to say: GOOD ON THE WELSH!!! We rarely see a good response by any team facing the Haka anymore and it is Absolutely Brilliant that the Welsh did this. The Haka is a challenge but also a sign of respect towards the other team and the Welsh were great opponents by just standing there with so much passion and pride in there team so that was a challenge in its self. So good on the Welsh!!
Because Harlech's a shithole. Nice beach though. And because the Welsh have appropriated the victory at Rorke's Drift when in fact less there were more English in that team than Wel...... Aaaahh I see now.
If I was on the Welsh team I would've pre-shit my pants to avoid further embarrassment on the field. I'm Welsh but my word New Zealand are gods of rugby. Always have to stand up to them though.
It's funny how you see people saying to ban the haka. It isn't all a war dance. It is also for strength and pride in our country. We may be small but this is what is heard. How our language is symbolised and past down through generations. So saying to ban it, is like telling Maori's they must stop talking their language... It ain't gonna happen mate.
@tripse777ens from a kiwi, i am very supprised to hear that, however i am very impressed. If we dont win it, i want england to, South africa are so cocky. and this video shows how to challenge while being respectful. love it
I remember watching this at 3am and thinking "oh crap, Wales better move before they get their asses kicked" hahaha!! The look on Ma'a Nonu's face is priceless. But I've never seen such passion in the faces of anyone doing the haka before. Great response by the Welsh and amazingly handled by Johathan Kaplan!
Allegedly Brian O'Driscoll is the only player to ever successfully respond to the challenge in the first test of the 2005 Lions Tour. He wanted to do it right and was taught by a Maori chieften on the customs of accepting. But you're right - it's a challenge and each team should step up to it!
Remember being in the stadium on this day. Was behind the posts, looking towards the backs of the All Blacks team with the Welsh facing towards me. What an intense atmosphere it was.
+juanjoseph Someone correct if I'm wrong, but the Hakka isn't supposed to be disrepectuful to the enemy. Quite the contrary, it's an invitation for honourable battle.
Totally disingenuous to do a war-dance and then play a mere sport afterwards. Don't act like you're intent on bashing skulls and cracking necks if you only want to win a match. Of course these psychotic manchildren probably would be down for some good old-fashioned ultraviolence if only society permitted it.
Not very bright are you Chris Wright. Read up on the history prior to making uneducated statements - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haka "Haka are performed for various reasons: for amusement, as a hearty welcome to distinguished guests, or to acknowledge great achievements, occasions or funerals."
Kneefur Oh you're on the fedora and neckbeard bandwagon are you. Copying what everyone else uses as a insult of the week before moving on to the next thing. How very original.
@tiancadcultura Hi. I am from South Africa, and that was the New Zealand traditional war-dance/challenge before they play a rugby match. New Zealand, as well as the island teams(Tonga, Samoa and Fiji) all do a wardance/challenge like that before a rugby match. It is a truly great tradition, and in this case, Wales provided one of the best responses ever. I hope you are enjoying the world cup.
Remember watching that game at a rugby club in Auckland and everyone thought it was a great response from the Welsh. Wales are playing good rugby right now. Would love to see the Mighty AB's play Wales soon! That should have been the RWC final.
@thekeeid that was in Nov 2006 and I was there. The WRU requested that they do the Haka before a minutes silence, prior to kickoff. NZ said that they'll do it immediately before kickoff, or not at all. So they did it in the dressing room. The crowd were furious.
@CaudProductions The Haka is a traditional challenge posed originally by Maori tribes. The All Blacks pose the challenge to the opposition team. Its a way of saying "lets do this, bring it on". Im a kiwi and i think its just amazing to watch, never miss a haka
Being a half Kiwi / Welsh. I take great pleasure in going to the Wales home games when the All blacks turn up. Land of my fathers & The Haka without a doubt provide the best opening to any sporting event I 'm ever likely to go to!
This is what i think, just me... well im a new zealander.. proudly born and raised there and i respect the shit out of the welsh... you got heart! i love how you's play with pride and passion, coz isnt that why we play rugby? and by the way you guys have some hot players!
I don't know if this is the right place to ask this, but I would love to see the Haka responded with Morris Dancing. Just for a laugh, and it could put them off their game.
it doesn't you can only hear it because they have camera and sound things on the ground so close to them. I went to the England vs All Blacks game, you couldn't hear the Haka at all.
I loved the response as a New Zealander. Thats what its all about, especially at home. Stand your ground!! Kia kaha Wales, much respect.
Owen Farrell... "Hold my beer".
RESPECT.
as a Welsh man it was epic to watch and hyped me up....but inside I was like "you guys defo going to feel that challenge in the morning"
P.S the Welsh love New Zealand and your practically perfect rugby playing and always will

12 years later and this is still one of the coolest Haka videos I've seen
As a kiwi, I say good stuff Wales, great to see a team stand up for themselves and have some pride.
The welsh have loads of pride.
Oh, that sends chills up my spine.
And that Welsh crowd singing land of our fathers.
Gets me every time!
I'm Irish, born and bred here in Ireland. I've long admired Welsh rugby since 1970's through to today. I've got to say the Welsh response that afternoon was nothing less than superb, to the haka. Yes congrats to Ireland , but they lost.
I don't know about you but I would've preferred a good result as opposed to a good response..hahaha..Fkn M.I.B'S HARD BOY...
I watch this hundred times but I still dont know who won the game lol
Two of the greatest rugby teams in the world as measured by the passion, commitment and love for the game from both players and fans - you rarely see other sports start with this level of emotion and intensity. Awesome!
The Haka is brilliant, its got that awesome rage to it........and kudos to the Welsh for standing their ground.
To be honest mate, i think after somebody does that infront of you, it probably takes very once of self control to not smash straight into them and rend them to pulp.
SeditiousSpyke Or shit yourself...
Eduardo Alves Am i the only one who find its enraging not intimidating?
SeditiousSpyke
I doubt you could smash right through the all blacks lmao, they're ginormous.
Tana Umaga can eat 12 Weetbix, How many can you eat bro :D Glad you like it, there is a lot national rugby pride behind it.
Hello 240p, my old friend!.....
Awesome challenge and response. What a great way to start a match between these two great rugby nations. Obviously the crowd loved it. I would have loved to have been there. The Haka is a challenge and also a sign of respect as someone else has mentioned. Haka's are used on many occasions for respect. (And I'm half Welsh half Kiwi) Keep this tradition going!!
man this sends chills down any person's spine. true display of warriors.
This was the first time I heard legendary duo of Eddie Butler and Brian Moore and instantly became a fan. RIP Eddie!
I still get goosebumps like I did back then when I watched this live - still awesome in 2023! 👏🏻👍🏻🍻🥃🏴
PROUD TO BE WELSH WE STAND ARE GROUND WIN OR LOSE!!!
Yes man! Gwneud yn dda!
Yea!
29-9,
Welsh were scared stiff that's why none of them moved
Josh Dugan Yeah, they really look "scared".
no matter how many times i watch this clip it always sends a shiver down my spine!
shame we lost!
It made my spine shivver on the day... (lucky enough to have been sitting on the half way line with some good mates! ... If you listen you can hear me. I'm the one shouting Wales, Wales, Wales...) and it's made my spine shiver today again!

Came here after the England Vs New Zealand Haka 2019.
Thats so weird.
So did I
Nice to see it backed up with actions for once.
Depends which Haka it is. There are loads of different ones.
👏
Every iwi has its own.
And each hapu has its version as well.
@Lucas Lima no kapa o pango wasn’t performed till 2005
@MrBigboyk You know what mate, it was a great moment. I'm and Englishman and it makes me smile to know that there are still sports out there in which people can be proud of their nationality without taking it to extremes. I know I compare football and rugby all the time but at least in rugby you can see people from both nationalities sitting in the same stand together enjoying the game without the fear of being attacked because of where you're from.
I was there, while watching this I'm tingling all over. It was absolutely Electric.
I remember watching this like it was yesterday , and I was screaming at the tele " don't you move " "don't you dare move" , you'd swear I was the coach , the whole thing gave me goosebumps , I felt like I was in the rocky film , every time Shane Williams got tackled I screamed at him " get up you son of a b**ch cos the Welsh love you
Ha ha ........Well said xxx
Welshman here - this was incredible. There are so many comparisons between Welsh and kiwi way of life.Somwhere I've always wanted to visit.
One of the greatest and most tense moments in rugby history.
Well yeah. There have been MANY. Well done The Welsh team.
Chills every time. I’ve watched this about 50 times no less 😅
im a kiwi but absolutely love this, such a great challenge from wales we always love all blacks vs wales tests
I cannot believe that there are people around the world who hate the Haka!!! How the hell can this be possible? I cannot imagine a world cup without these guys
It's bent as fuck
+Barri it's culture.
why is that is it because we might have a fair tournament you fucking slag
I don't like it. I find it disrespectful doing that in someone elses country and pretty cocky to want the others also to move away first. I would just get on with my warming up, not being bothered by it at all. Also as a spectator I just have to laugh because to me it seems so pathethic. So we are all different. I still think the AB are the best team ever and great rugbyplayers, nothing against them their country or whatever. But for me the haka is a complete waste of time and somehow it seems to introduce some inequality??
Oh I loved that moment so much, total electrcity and a big 'up yours' from Wales, we won't be intimidated, we won't back down.
As a New Zealander and a Maori i would just like to say: GOOD ON THE WELSH!!! We rarely see a good response by any team facing the Haka anymore and it is Absolutely Brilliant that the Welsh did this. So good on the Welsh!!
YES Well said. PPL take it as an affront. It the Haka is a a sign of respect.
Why not respond to the Haka with Men of Harlech?
Because Harlech's a shithole. Nice beach though. And because the Welsh have appropriated the victory at Rorke's Drift when in fact less there were more English in that team than Wel......
Aaaahh I see now.
Im English but this is the best response to the haka I've seen, love this video.
If I was on the Welsh team I would've pre-shit my pants to avoid further embarrassment on the field. I'm Welsh but my word New Zealand are gods of rugby.
Always have to stand up to them though.
Englishman. Brummie. This sent a chill down my spine watching it live, thirty years ago, just as it does today.
Kinda disappointing, I was expecting some clog dancing or something in response.
Hahahahahahah I see how the haka can hype a person up
I enjoyed the singing, much better than the brainless USA chant.
I am loling so hard at your comment , I was thinking the same brother.
Cui Bono Someone sounds butthurt.
Bob Papadopoulos just stating facts
Love the Welsh response ... you Boyo's done with the little dance ... lets have it large proper
"Challenge accepted".
This was a brilliant response from Wales. Reminds me of when John Jeffries to the response right in their faces - face to face only an inch apart!
It's funny how you see people saying to ban the haka. It isn't all a war dance. It is also for strength and pride in our country. We may be small but this is what is heard. How our language is symbolised and past down through generations. So saying to ban it, is like telling Maori's they must stop talking their language... It ain't gonna happen mate.
personally i think it's a tribal wardance and i have absolutely no problems with that
Ban the haka? Fuck that, I'm irish and I love it
I'm a great admirer of the Haka - in its various forms. Loved it. Thanks for posting.
International Sports at its best..
Ill never tire of watching the haka.awesome
lol the Welsh are just sitting there like, "Kiwi's? We were told there would be sheep, not kiwis? WTF?"
This is the best challenge of the haka I've seen besides other haka's!
Welsh singing should get them wound up. Hahahaa
Can't beat a Welsh crowd singing Bread in Heaven.
Being Welsh myself, I highly respect that comment, you didn't resort to slagging off the other team, well done
To the people asking who won. The All Black (New Zealand) smashed them convincingly.
There's me thinking they "smashed" us un-convincingly...
Getting psyched for this today
Jovem Nerd.
Is there a version somewhere that is clearer? Seems like this shouldn't be so hard to find.
"New Zealander" is not a race. Does your carer know you are using the internet unsupervised?
@tripse777ens from a kiwi, i am very supprised to hear that, however i am very impressed. If we dont win it, i want england to, South africa are so cocky. and this video shows how to challenge while being respectful. love it
Stands up to Haka...lose 9 - 29...
I remember watching this at 3am and thinking "oh crap, Wales better move before they get their asses kicked" hahaha!! The look on Ma'a Nonu's face is priceless. But I've never seen such passion in the faces of anyone doing the haka before.
Great response by the Welsh and amazingly handled by Johathan Kaplan!
aannnnnnnnnddd then the ABs smashed the Welsh like they have been doing for the past 55 years
Allegedly Brian O'Driscoll is the only player to ever successfully respond to the challenge in the first test of the 2005 Lions Tour. He wanted to do it right and was taught by a Maori chieften on the customs of accepting. But you're right - it's a challenge and each team should step up to it!
That Haka thing is fucking stupid. I get that New Zealand are a great team, but that stupid "oh look at us" dance really pisses me off.
It's a traditional thing to do? It's not a look at us dance, it's important to the people in Nz
mixedstylesable The fact that you dont like it doesnt make it stupid, grow the fuck up
***** I should have clarified..
*I think* it's fucking stupid.
Better?
mixedstylesable Ok and why exactly? They are not trying tobe the center of attention its a tradition..so what?
Jackmerius Tacktheritrix No need to be mad
That was the best response to the haka I've ever seen. Good luck for Sunday boys. We can beat SA (fingers crossed)
Of course Wales got smashed in the end.
It’s the pride and passion that counts
Remember being in the stadium on this day. Was behind the posts, looking towards the backs of the All Blacks team with the Welsh facing towards me. What an intense atmosphere it was.
I've always thought that hakas are an insult to sportmanship in rugby. It seems bigoted, even if they are the best team.
It's a traditional Maori war dance that was done to intimidate enemies
+juanjoseph Someone correct if I'm wrong, but the Hakka isn't supposed to be disrepectuful to the enemy. Quite the contrary, it's an invitation for honourable battle.
+Lucas Ribeiro exactly. . only idiots see it as disrespectful. . It's beautiful. . like a work of art.. Gives rugby some class!
Name of that player please at 2:42....
and..... then they lost.
Least they didn't get fined like France did for not standing there bored while the ABs yell and slap themselves...
they don`t loose often
Still it was a great match. Dont be a killer buzz round here ay bro
GTFO papadopoulos and stop commenting on all these videos get a life
Were one of the top 5 times in the world... Ye we lost but most countries do to this might team who work well together.
@sledgeyx what about the time the irish players came forward to them many years ago?
Totally disingenuous to do a war-dance and then play a mere sport afterwards. Don't act like you're intent on bashing skulls and cracking necks if you only want to win a match. Of course these psychotic manchildren probably would be down for some good old-fashioned ultraviolence if only society permitted it.
my name is Christ Wright and I talk shit behind keyboards!
Not very bright are you Chris Wright. Read up on the history prior to making uneducated statements - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haka
"Haka are performed for various reasons: for amusement, as a hearty welcome to distinguished guests, or to acknowledge great achievements, occasions or funerals."
Bassett85
shhh, he wants to mock people behind his screen and fedora.
Bassett85
That's all well and good you snarky little shit, but this is clearly of the war-dance variety.
Kneefur
Oh you're on the fedora and neckbeard bandwagon are you. Copying what everyone else uses as a insult of the week before moving on to the next thing. How very original.
Absolutely brilliant! Respect to both teams.
ウェールズ代表の選手たちの動じないパフォーマンスとてもカッコいい🏉🏴✨
1:18 特にここのアンディパウエル選手の仁王立ち💥
brilliant, always wondered why Cymru dont respond with a celtic wardance? even the romans feared the Druids
The haka is awesome, and this was the best challenge yet.
Love the haka and the equally macho response. Great stuff.
is there a video to the game???
As an Englishman...I fucking love this..Fair play.
Tidy 😉
This is great. Such spine tingling stuff
What was the response ?
@Msvilley03 The funny thing is..... didnt Wales beat Samoa yesterday?
What does this Response mean after HAKA......plz do tell !!!
Didn't back it up though did ya boys?
I was there and can safely say those were the best three minutes of the match...
What was the result of this game?
What's the name of this haka?
do the New Zealand cricket team do the haka?
@tiancadcultura Hi. I am from South Africa, and that was the New Zealand traditional war-dance/challenge before they play a rugby match. New Zealand, as well as the island teams(Tonga, Samoa and Fiji) all do a wardance/challenge like that before a rugby match. It is a truly great tradition, and in this case, Wales provided one of the best responses ever. I hope you are enjoying the world cup.
2:42 Alun Wyn Jones?
Remember watching that game at a rugby club in Auckland and everyone thought it was a great response from the Welsh. Wales are playing good rugby right now. Would love to see the Mighty AB's play Wales soon! That should have been the RWC final.
im from New Zealand and i thought what Wales did here was great! good on them for not backing down! Thats respect from me :D
@thekeeid that was in Nov 2006 and I was there. The WRU requested that they do the Haka before a minutes silence, prior to kickoff. NZ said that they'll do it immediately before kickoff, or not at all. So they did it in the dressing room. The crowd were furious.

The Haka is a traditional challenge posed originally by Maori tribes. The All Blacks pose the challenge to the opposition team. Its a way of saying "lets do this, bring it on". Im a kiwi and i think its just amazing to watch, never miss a haka
Who is it leading the haka?
Being a half Kiwi / Welsh. I take great pleasure in going to the Wales home games when the All blacks turn up. Land of my fathers & The Haka without a doubt provide the best opening to any sporting event I
'm ever likely to go to!
What's that in relation to the population size?
what was the final score of this game?
Very classy way for Wales to respond... Sets up the game nicely.
I think you mean 'And what was the outcome of the game?'
