This f-ing game, the bane of my childhood. When I saw Mike beat the NES Mega Man games, I couldn't belive how easy they are. To see the struggle of beating this game somehow redeemed my 8 year old self, who barely managed to reach Ice Man 2 or 3 times.
P stands for Primary, as in primary weapon. Why would you think it stands for person? The person weapon lol. Just doesn't make much sense.
+robb cavicchi It does make sense if you tweak it a bit. In real life you have PDW's. Literally means Personal Defence Weapon. So having a plasma ball gun called "Personal Weapon" is not that far off what gun manufacturers call real weapons sometimes :p

Look at the boxart of the original game. Mega Man has a pistol. That means at some point he must have defeated a robot master with an arm cannon and kept using it from that point.

+Ping OMG yes one of my favourite Gameboy games of all time. It's so hard (I suck at platformers) but so much fun and the music is RIDICULOUSLY good.
+DarkKnightTrinity The only challenging part for me was fighting Soleiyu, since you have to go so far back if you lose your lives on him.
+Rython n I won't deny I suck at platformer games, and I usually don't really like them that much. The fact I even liked this game so much is a testament to it's awesomeness.

The Wily stage music was actually redone in Mega Man 10 as one of the special stage songs called 'Heart of Enker'

It's not that hard.
Go up to the scissor and fall back on the conveyor belt as the scissor charges at you, then get into position so it circles around you and just jog in place and jump as it passes underneath you.
From here, take out the lower of the spike balls with the mega buster.
Now, when the scissor allows you to, walk up to the other spike ball, letting it fall to the ground. As it does, quickly freeze it with the ice slasher, fall back to within the circle of the scissor and finish the spike ball off with the mega buster.
I read a Nintendo Power article about this game that suggested you should start with Cutman.
I find that hard to believe, because elecbeam and icebeam are very helpful for the stage and the flamethrower is good against the boss.
I remeber Megaman 2 for the gameboy. Love the sound on that one. Very catchy original tunes.

The way the Carry works is that it'll appear under you if you use it in mid-air, so you can jump out towards the location, use Carry to break your fall, and then jump again. It's not Item 1.
Fast forward to 37:50 if you want to see the beginning of that actual second part.
In Captain N, Mega Man referred to it as a "Plasma Powershot". Therefore, it is "Plasma". I seem to recall it was called that in other old cartoons.

Just kidding - it stands for *PLAYER!*
I just realized that some parts of the Wily stages in this game are in the special stages in Mega Man 9 & 10.

As a kid i had this cartridge from china with mega man 1-5 on it - i beat them all on the toilet.
The P stands for potato. You can clearly see Mega Man shoot a potato.
EN - was Enker the last robot after Quickman. Had to make use of him like Top Man from MM3.

*SURPRISE!*
The shield guys should be exploitable by shooting at point blank range because mega man extends his hand when he shoots and his hand doesn't count as a hit box so his it will overlap the shields enabling you to shoot through directly. Kinda thought every mega man fan knew this little trick. Wish you knew this when you played, because you just struggled so much against them when they were basically the easiest enemy in the game.
You have to use the pellet gun for that guy with the sword

You have to use the platform weapon for the second area of blocks in the Willy level
God damnit, I always miss the live events because the shitty TH-cam Gaming is not available in my country.
The Lifebar thing? yeah, you only get about half as much health than in NES games, thus everything hits harder than it seems.

If it makes you feel any better, the sequel was so ridiculously easy and crude I have a hard time believing Capcom actually put it out rather than hired an independent developer. The third one ramped up the difficulty again, though.

I think it would be cool to see more ROM hacks played on live stream or J&MM (just the good ones, like Mario 3Mix, or a good Zelda ROM hack).

no but seriously, I think the biggest problem with this game is that the screen is so small, it makes all the rooms smaller and the sprites of everyone look much bigger, you almost have no space to avoid some of the enemies, or even the attacks of some bosses.
Mike questions what the "P" is for the power and I've always thought it stood for "Primary" or "Plain"

Awesome stream :) Definitely one of the hardest (if not the hardest) Mega Man games out there. MM 2-3-4 are slightly easier, MM 5 being the easiest imo. Hope you do a live stream (or review) on Mega Man V for the GB sometime, since that game has a unique robot master line up! Cheers

Hardest game is hard one to answer because hard games have to be differentiated from unfair games. Weeding out games that are broken or poorly designed has to be done and it's also something there will be a lot of disagreement about.
You could do Skate or Die - Bad 'n Rad on GameBoy.
That's a great platformer by Konami which is really particular.

What if it stands for pistol XD like the cover gave him and capcom just kept the P instead of changing it to megabuster.
p stands for plasma. Megaman canonically shoots plasma from his megabuster.

good job on beating this game, it has a subtitle, Dr Wily's Revenge as seen on wikipedia en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mega_Man:_Dr._Wily%27s_Revenge i owned this and mega man 2 on gameboy game as a kid, and h8d it, as it wasn't faithful 2 other megaman games. Enemy weapon weaknesses did almost no dmg whatsoever, health and lives being very scarce and a very high difficulty. My advice is 2 spam electricity on all bosses and enemies, as most enemies die in 1-2 hits if aimed correctly, and it covers a wide area and bosses take more dmg from it than your regular weapon + you're encouraged 2 spam it as the game is very generous in giving ammo back 4 it.
