    Zelda II is flawed, but a great game. Very ahead of it's time, with a lot of great elements that I wish they'd use in modern 3D Zelda games, especially the leveling aspect, and manual jumping. I would honestly put Zelda II in the Top 5 or 6 Zelda games of all time.

    Pro tip: Make sure you level up before you defeat a palace boss. When you put the crystal in the statue after you beat the boss you are automatically given the points needed to level up one more time.

    • @NoelG702
      @NoelG702 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep, I learned this from watching speedrunners. Those crazy fucks go and get the hammer early without a candle. You don't really need it.

    • @schwarzerritter5724

      +Jeff Schmidt
      You can actually grab the item, leave the palace and then leave those level ups for later when you are almost maxed out. But I guess that would look bad in a gameplay video.

    • @NoelG702
      @NoelG702 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +TheSkavenger216 Yep, I know it's not hard if you practice. I remember your name from Twitch and the Zelda 2 speed running community. I've watched some of your streams. You guys still amaze me though, even if it isn't as hard with practice.

    • @benishmael9451
      @benishmael9451 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@schwarzerritter5724 I max out my stats then return the crystals. Then I'll collect all 1-ups.

    Hope this helps someone.
    Axe swinger:
    Let him swing, move in and strike, press the d-pad to back up a bit, let him swing, move in and strike. May take practice to get the timing down, but there is no jumping involved.
    Axe thrower:
    Stand and wait for him to throw, jump forward over it and on your way down tap the attack quickly a few times, tap the d-pad to back up a bit, repeat.
    Link may not strike unless you tap the attack two or three times on this one. I think it has something to do with the jump animation finishing before you can strike if you attack just as you land.
    Get the rhythm down and it works great!
    Good luck!

    i love this game. idk why people love to hate it so much. the combat system is awesome and i enjoy the whole "RPG element" of leveling up your skills. as a kid this game was a bit too difficult for me, but nowadays i love it! great music too by the way.

    Hey mike, I think this game is soooo hard because it is a side scroller, in Zelda 1, link to the past etc. you can quickly avoid enemy's, this game forces you to fight everything in sight, unless you jump over it.

    Also like someone else said make sure you level up in the palace before you beat the boss because once you place the crystal in the palace you get enough points to level up again. So you can level up a bunch of times.

  • @CaptainCocaine

    DO NOT go straight for the hammer after you make it through Death Mountain. Head east and go to the next town to get the Downward Thrust, . Then go back for the hammer now that you can easily jump over the axe-bastards. If you die on the way, at least you have the Downward Thrust, which will make Death Mountain significantly easier the second time around.

      +Angry Gen X'er I'm pretty sure that's not true. I've played this game countless times, yet I haven't noticed one instance in which I used less magic than I normally would.

    Death Mountain was tough, but I never considered it the hardest part. You just have to adjust your strategies to deal with the Dairas, since their axes can't be blocked with the shield. I always found trekking through graveyards to be much more infuriating, or that lava field that precedes the last level with those lizard guys.

      OK so you know the swamp level is level 2 as well... FYI for future you don't need the hammer to get there :)

    This game doesn't look bad at all. It just seems like a game that you have to play methodically. You can't just mash buttons and rush through it.
