  • HVAC: Johnson Controls Water Source Heat Pump Not Cooling/HACK JOB (Water Cooled Heat Pump HACK JOB) HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning) Service Call: Water Source Heat Pump Tripping On High Pressure Control (Heat Pump Not Working) Heat Pump Not Cooling / Heat Pumping Not Heating / WSHP Not Working / WSHP Not Cooling / WSHP Not Heating / Johnson Controls Heat Pump Troubleshooting / HVAC Troubleshooting / Commercial HVAC Training
A heat pump is a system used to heat or cool an enclosed space or domestic water by transferring thermal energy from a cooler space to a warmer space using the refrigeration cycle, moving heat in the opposite direction in which heat transfer would take place without the application of external power. When used to cool a building, a heat pump works like an air conditioner by transferring heat from inside the building to the outdoors. When used to heat a building, the heat pump operates in reverse: heat is transferred into the building from the outdoors. Common heat pump types are air source heat pumps, ground source heat pumps, water source heat pumps and exhaust air heat pumps. Heat pumps are also often used in district heating systems.
The water source heat pump replaces the outdoor fan and coil with a heat exchanger. For this system to work the building provides a loop of water. This water loop includes a cooling tower and a boiler to maintain the water entering and leaving the unit for optimal performance.

24v open command for the valve when y1 is calling and the valve has an proportional end switch which u use to start power up compressor start. Bacnet is a fairly easy thermostat, disconnect the communication wires from it so you can use the thermostat commands to troubleshoot and than remember to connect the bacnet communication loop. Excellent work broski!

If it says O B it can be programmed either way. Depends on the reverse valve installation. O is energized during AC calling.. B is energized during heat calling.

At 7:10 when you push third contractor it has a HUGE electrical arc to ground. I would investigate that further. If the internal coil fails or there is a short to ground, that is a great place to start.

It looks to me like the Actuator Body was upside down thats why showing 100% when closed and 0% when open. Just needed to flip around and it would have probably closed and open when sequenced, when you turn it around it changes the angle of rotation

That actuator should be set up differently. Arrow in line should be open, flow. Should be a way to try and get that small indicator set right with the actuator signal. The big plastic one is a Johnson thing for looking at from afar I believe. Orange on the actuator is feedback, so not needed usually. Test that actuator first, 24vac supply and signal on the grey either 24vac open or 0-10vdc which you can source to test, likely fine. Trace back what is controlling that. Reliable controls is BMS, means your BMS is involved. Maybe you figured all this out already, enjoy your videos in NYC. Programmed sequence of pump, with valve and enabling may be off. BMS controls the y, w, and r signal by relays same as a thermostat. Reliable thermostat just gives space temp to BMS so I would leave it alone. You just need to determine if it's a BMS issue or equipment issue. If you follow the cables out will end up at a BMS enclosure, maybe some relays and controllers. They may have given someone in the building graphics access, or the bldg has a standing maint contract for BMS support

Love your approach. I’ve been working for a large company for 29 years and take care of 11 buildings and back up 2 other guys that have 11 buildings so I see a lot of hacking, when we can’t keep up the company is forced to bring in contractors that don’t have a clue. Our automation is. Mix of JCI , old dial up AET, Andover , so can get pretty interesting! I’ve seen over and over again contractors working on wrong units and jumping out controls when a simple look at automation shows it’s not calling to run either it thinks it’s satisfied or fire shutdown, high water in pan, or end switches on actuators not making. I learn something new everyday! But limited hard drive space so for something new to come in , something old goes! lol. Keep up the good work. Just on the other side of the river to the west!

BAC net. I run into problems with these controls systems all the time, metasys, invinsys, etc. it’s usually that they somehow lose their logic or the “control technician” doesn’t properly understand hvac functions. Your actuator is most likely fine, it’s likely someone before attempted to fix it. Good luck and thanks

2 out of the 4 wires are only connected. It's not working properly or as designed. The power feeding it doesn't come on at the right time. Best bet is to wire it to work with the cooling cycle with the thermostat so it works with the compressors. A spring return would be ideal to keep things simple work accordingly. @@JumpermanTech I think you're right, the problem was that the power coming from the controller didn't stay on, like the controller is bad. The manual for that valve shows it can be wired with just black and gray to operate in an on/off implementation, and the X1 was in that cable harness coming back to the controller. If you go back I'd be curious to see what voltage you get on X1 from the controller board on a hard power cycle like you did in this video (with and without the valve connected). Maybe the valve has a shorted coil internally and the control board cut off power for protection?
