  • This video shows the different load combination. To design any structure, first you have to take the load into consideration. There are various load combination available and engineer should use any of load combination for design purposes. One should choose load combination according to the scenario, in earthquake prone region one should must consider load combination of earthquake, in snowy region one should consider the snow load combination, so it depends on the construction site, that which types of load are coming on the structures, according to that you have to use the load combinations. Some load combinations are,
    1.2 D.L + 1.6 L.L
    1.2 D.L + 1.0 E.L + 0.2 S.L
    1.2 D.L + 1.6 (S or R.L)
    0.9 D.L + 1.0 E.L
    0.9 D.L + 1.0 W.L

Sir Why we use 1.2 or 1.6 with D.L nd L.L? Give me a technical answer thanks

1.2 is used because dead load is not that much variable, while we use higher factor of safety for live load which is 1.6 because there is more variability in live load.

The load combinations can be found in ASCE 7.

Why Live load is 1.6 and Dead Load is 1.2?

Usama Ahmad The live load is given a larger factor of safety (1.6), because it is harder to predict exactly how the the building will be filled (amount of furniture and people... basically all things not considered permanent in the dead load that are added to the building.) The dead load is only slightly scaled up because we can reasonably approximate it with less uncertainty than we can the live loads.
