Good day. do you have an example on calculating the loads on a roof truss

    Hello prof. Walls
I just wanted to know with regards to modelling the portal frame, if you are designing such that your columns resist bending induced by wind actions, do you model your base fixity as a fixed or pinned support ? If pinned how will one determine the moment of resistance at the support? thanks.
A Witsie would appreciate your clarity.😥

You would model it to match what you build on site. Base plates can be made to act as either fixed or pinned. Hence, if you assume pinned end conditions during design then make sure you specify a pinned base plate (e.g. bolts located close to the centre of the base plate such that they have limited rotation capacity)

    Hello Sir
Sir I want to know that how we calculate the steel beam size (its web, outer flange and inner flage)
Similarly calculate the rafter size its web,its inner flange and outer Flange.and column base plate size with holes and nuts and connection plate size. All of those have a Formula to know sizes?
Please sir if any formulas then tell me.
    Please
    Please

Where did that 5m come from ,one you multiplied with to get the purlin load?

The portal frames are 5m apart. You would get that from the layout drawing or decide what it should be to suit your building. Thanks

I always used 1.4 factor for permanent loads, now I see you are using 1.35,

It's also 1.35 in the Eurocode
