    My experience, don't know about anybody else's. My Whippet, which I got as a puppy, hated me to start as he saw me as the being that ripped him away from his siblings. I started working with him right away spending time "training" him outside a minimum of an hour each day when I got home from the office. I did not use treats as reward but affection. This was critically important. I did not want him used to a treat as a bribe but affection to reinforce good behavior. I got him on a regular routine of eating and going out and, I think this was important, I had him sleep in the same room as me so he saw me last thing and first thing. Soon, he became the perfect pet. He was aloof around other dogs and people. Magnificently behaved, sitting perfectly like a statue always looking to me to "read" how I felt about something or someone. He became very adept at this. Once a neighbor I didn't like stopped to engage me while walking is cocker spaniel. I spoke with the fellow to be courteous but my dog sensed I didn't like him. My Whippet, while I was talking to this fellow sneakily lifted his leg and let loose on the cocker. The fellow was incensed. I offered to pay for the grooming but when I got inside I laughed my butt off. I loved my Whippet for things like that for the entire 14 years I had him. I would never have another breed. I never had him on leash unless it was going somewhere, like a store, where it was required.

      That was great reading. Thank you for posting your memories of your whippet. My greyhound nailed my husband's gym bag once. He was supposed to walk the dog as soon as he came home, but dropped the bag just inside the door, turned, and went back outside instead. Greyhounds can get a little resentful, sometimes...

    My whippet is the best behaved, most loyal, gentle, cleanest, obedient, well trained and quietest dog I've ever owned or known. He is a fantastic dog.
    I also have a Jack Russell. She is noisy, demanding, clingy, destructive, stubborn, drops tons of hair, has smelly breath and is nearly blind, so she just charges into things and breaks stuff or hurts your ankles all the time. She leaves sneaky little puddles in the spare room or the kitchen sometimes too.
    I love them both equally and wouldn't change a thing. Whippets are the best breed of dog that I have ever encountered, and Jack Russells are the funniest and most entertaining. The compliment each other perfectly!

    Alfred is about two months old, give or take a week. He has absolutely NO PROBLEM outrunning me the two times he a) slipped off his leash cus the dudes head is almost narrower than his neck and b) he saw how I was holding his leash and wanted to investigate the trash can I was carrying up the driveway. He is now suckling in his dreams, yipping, and chasing something. I can't tell if it is a good dream or a bad one but - and wait - he stopped. Damn I love him, we start training class this weekend!!! I love my whippet!!!! I need to get a bicycle tho, this guy can run, and I.... I cannot.

Ultimate couch potato but my god loves her walk as long as it’s not raining! Very lucky to be able to let her off the lead as we’re in the country and can go for long country walks away from roads etc, loves with our cat which she is honestly scared of 😂

      Love the cat comment. We have two whippets, both 7 years old, and a very dainty ginger cat. She was already here when the whippets turned up as puppies. Only one of them rules the house, and it ain't one of the whippets. My suggestion - if you want cats and whippets together, get the cat first, and then get puppies. They learn quick :). And today the three of them are thick as thieves. They all sit together side-by-side when feeding time comes around. But these whippets - just amazing dogs. Jaw-droppingly quick for an hour a day - fast asleep for the other 23. The video is right though. They DON'T like the cold.

Though there is much of this video that isn't quite accurate (just to name one thing that's wrong, I have never EVER had any of my whippets attack the family cats. We introduce them and give them both love at the same time and the whippet learns fast that the cat is a friend), it's shows a lot of good whippet video's)

      Only problem is... if they see something, they're gone. Disregard commands because she won't come back. I let her off the lead only at the very tail end of our walk and ONLY when absolutely NOTHING is in sight. Not another dog, children playing, nothing. But she has a fenced back yard so that's where she gets her running in. ;o)

    • @dxviperman
      @dxviperman 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I don't understand why the maker of this video thinks that a whippet will take off and not respond to commands. Is he not a good trainer or owner? I've only had one whippet in 40 years of owning them that ran off after something but that was his first day in the house. Within a few days, he always responded to commands even when he was "in the zone" chasing something, he always responded. Only a few times in those 40 years did ANY of my whippets ever have a leash on them. they stayed close and rarely even left the yard except to go next door to play with the neighbors kids in their yard

    My whippet does not have a strong prey drive. When he was little he chased a dog far off but when he saw me he ran back as fast as he could and stayed between my legs the rest of the day. He will be off leash and see rabbits or cats and just look at them as to say hi and keep on walking. He is very attached to me. He was a rescue and jumped over a 6 foot fence ran down the street and jumped into my arms after I met him. They were going to take him back to the shelter and that’s why I went to meet him. No way was he going anywhere except with me!! Best dog ever. Got him at 9 months and he’s now 11 and my service dog. ❤️❤️🐾🐾

    You definitely SHOULD walk your whippet off leash. Any sighthound walk in the UK I've seen has had whippets running off leash. Greyhounds tend to stay on a leash (rescue ones). My whippet has been off leash since she was first allowed out the home from her vaccinations! You'll find they are "velcro dogs", they're very clingy, which is great for recall. As long as you don't engege with anything you don't want them to and have a little learning under your belt there is no reason why they can't get off - I'd feel terribly mean if I didn't when my dog is better off the leash than on! Of course this should be done away from roads etc.
    I've heard of multiple whippets to bark at people and other dogs on walks. Mine has developed a bit of a tenancy too - the breed is prone to anxiety problems, so you could get a very loud whippet.

      @BUSHCRAPPING 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Spot on. As long as you get them from a pup theres no reason they cant be off lead. Its really sad that people get these dogs and never let them off. You shouldnt get one if you wont let it off. And they can be 100% fine with cats too. Rescues are different but if you get one from a pup you shouldnt hsve problems

Although if he saw a squirrel he was gone! 😂 My advice being a whippet owner if you don’t have time to nurture this is not the breed for you as they can be very anxious and they don’t like being left for too long. They are a people’s dogs. If we decide to be owners again I would get 2. 😊

    Our whippet is 2 yrs old, lives quite happily with the cat, and rarely needs a leash. He sticks right with us. He comes to work with me every day and lounges in the corner of our store on his bed. He has a good half hour field run once a day. He loves the woods and is quite hardy. We live in northern Canada and I only put his coat on if its -10c or colder or windy. He's smart, well mannered and obedient when it comes to the important stuff, like come, stay and no! Howerver if you want a dog who will do tricks...I'm preety sure he's thinking "what's in it for me" and only offers a paw, or to sit or lie down if he knows we have a treat. I don't get this notion that they need to always be on a leash. I know a few whippets and they always come when called.

    • @joshuawalker5479
      @joshuawalker5479 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s not that they won’t come back when called but their drive to want to chase moving objects is so strong that you can trust them not to run after small things like cats, birds etc and they won’t think twice of where they are actually going but just chase

    Whippets are actually very good watch dogs. They will often start barking if they sense something is outside.

      As always, it depends on the whippet. I was burgled, and my two whippets (who slept on the bed with me) only woke up as the burglars were leaving! But to look on the bright side, at least they belatedly heard the burglars, woke up and started barking.

    My brother and wife have two very undisciplined whippets, they bark, and jump alllll the time. They’re very strong, and it’s unpleasant to be around them. They jump onto a 4 ft marble island to get food. They’ve had whippets before who were terrific, but these….! My brother and his wife are late 70’s and early 80’s, they don’t listen to them at all. I used a silent whistle once, and the one dog stopped dead in his tracks, after doing it 3 x’s, he never came towards me again. My brother was furious that I did it, but it did the job, and kept him off of me. The female is a lot better. Now I’m at the point to where I cringe when he has family get togethers. I’m not afraid of them, but he always seems to target me to jump on and try to knock me down. He’s 35 lbs of muscle. My brother and his wife can’t control them. They can’t invite their friends over, because of this problem. The male flunked out of training!

    Not saying this was wrong but It is possible to train your whippet to not run into a road and get hit I had one and I frequently walked him off leash and he never did anything that he wasn't supposed to.

    My 2 whippets listen pretty good. 90% of the walkes with me (not my girlfriend) they are off leash. When I see a cat or dog before they do or at the same time I can give them the command to stay. The other dog on leash goes crazy while mine stay calm but interested. Other dogowners admire that.I have had them running of when they saw a bunny in the wild. After a few minutes they come back exhausted.

      Our Whippet lives with our cat. The cat tolerates our whippet, but for the most part they don't get along all that well, so we have to supervise all interaction.

      I had four cats when I brought in two whippet puppies.
      Two of my cats quickly put my whippet puppies 'in their place' - the other two spent the remainder of their lives on shelves etc. beyond the whippets' reach....
      In short, it depends on whether your cat(s) are they type that refuse to put up with any nonsense, or the type that are frightened and run.

    I have just brought a whippet. He is 7wks old at the moment. All he does is sleep lol. The vets have have said he really under weight at the moment so I'm feeding him up to 6 times per day. Any tips on house training him would be muchly appreciated. We are a rather sporty family so getting him out for exercise will not be a problem once he is old enough and slightly fatter

      Use treats and positive training. No screaming or shouting. Be patient. Reward them with treats if they do something u want them to do, if not then still love them...they have a lot of Feelings and emotions. They left their families to stay with you. They love you and u need to show you're love for them. Treat them as your own children, not as pets

    • @dxviperman

      Just like pretty much all animals that are capable of extreme burst of speed and power, they are basically the laziest animals. They love to cuddle up on a blanket (or under the blankets on your bed) and sleep. Just make sure you follow the Vet's recommendations on feeding them and if this is your first whippet, don't fall for the "he's too skinny, I can see his ribs" comments. Their ribs should slightly show and their belly will curve up into their abdomen. They are built for speed. Depending on the size and shape of your whippet, this video says they run up to 35mph. My last whippet was capable of up to 42mph and could spin circles like pirouettes while running at full speed. He was about an inch oversized for a whippet by about 1 inch. You will LOVE this dog. Their eyes are just like human eyes. They are VERY expressive. One of the only breeds that have that type of eyes. Enjoy. All of mine lived to about 15 1/2 years old. Oh, and by the way, they are VERY sensitive to negative feedback. There is no need to yell at them. It scares them bad. A simple NO if they do something wrong will suffice. If you yell, they are so sensitive to it that they will become afraid of you.

    The first time that I saw a whippet was at someone’s house. I’m not a “dog” person but that creature was lovely! Unfortunately, the mother of this house, would kick this dog whenever it was in her way. Wish that I could have kidnapped this animal, it’s name was Bambi.🐾🐾

      Forza Blankito Oh, I wish that I could have, this was several years ago and I don’t think that the woman or her sweet dog are even around anymore. Today, being a grownup, I would not hesitate to report someone.

      And this is why whippets certainly aren't suitable for everyone.
      To be fair, this applies to all pets - but whippets in particular, need a sensitive human who wouldn't behave this way.

    Nearly all my close family members have had or still have whippets they used to be big racers winning quite a lot at local and country wide level some use for game hunting now mainly lamping etc extremely fast always look out for dodgy breeders though and don't fall for the ones that are imported from Eastern Europe they prey on the west's love for dogs

    All is true but you didn't stress enough how high are their energy needs. Anyone considering having a whippet should be mentally prepared to invest enough time and effort to provide them with activities. Failing that can really harm them.

    We rescued a Bitch Whippet from under a tree outside our house.
    She is a lovely dog but contradicts some of the this list.
    For starters intelligent breed ? My Whippet is thick as fuck Denser than depleted uranium.
    Absolutely top gaurd dog barks when there is a dude at the door and otherwise quiet.
    Obviously we walk the fucker but we do let it off the lead it comes back when called even in open fields or woodland. Only down is it eats shit and rolls in it dirty bitch have to watch her like a hawk.
    It pulls at the end of the walk only because it knows its going back to its bed.
    Vid was bang on with food but mine seems to shit more than it eats ? I have a french beauceron biggish dog rottweiler size and he has nothing on the shit machine whippet.
    Very affectionate and soft creatures of comfort I give you the whippet.
