I think Carly did exceptionally well. After all, it's only a couple of weeks since she passed her test and not only is she driving a car she's not familiar with, she's driving a WEIRD car she's not familiar with!
Carly driving TWK for the win!

Here in the Netherlands all drivers are insured as long as they have a valid driving licence and permission from the owner.

Yeah, insurance in the UK is daylight robbery 😅

Different system.. in Europe we insure a car, in the UK I think they don't need to insure the cars just the drivers so it might be much cheaper if you have multiple cars or fast cars I'd guess instead of paying much higher rates when you get some fast and easy to crash car in Europe, but dunno just a guess...

It's the same in France, the vehicle is covered. I think the excess changes, depending on age, endorsements on licence etc.

WOW….welcome to the 1980s, Citroen style.
Firstly, well done to Mrs HubNut for taking on this challenge and getting to grips with the thing that quickly. I do remember in ye olden days during learning & immediately after passing, changing to a moderately different car was hard. And that doesn’t compare to this video.
Obviously some of the characteristics are Citroen only, but the general heavy feel to the driving, the heavy resistive gear shifter, and unforgiving clutch are things that were common back then….this really did bring back memories.
With that in mind, there are already fun videos on TH-cam showing young people trying to use a very early Macintosh…or better still, an MS-DOS PC…..I think driving modern classics especially anything very different like the Citroen, let alone vintage classics, will go the same way in another 10-20 years, especially as the powers that be rightly or wrongly are pushing the electric route. Cars such as the GSA, and even more run of the mill Ford Escorts will be totally alien to the future generation.
And I think that is very sad.
    PS
    did you mention Citroen CX…
I remember I used to see one, an estate type, regularly same spot parked, every weekend….it seemed massive at the time, I mean ridiculous long car. But I was about 14 at the time and I have discovered if you revisit places from your childhood, they seem a lot smaller now. I haven’t seen a CX in a very long time…I wonder, will one of those appear small by modern standards?

Never gets boring, hearing the sound of an air-cooled boxer. First struggles when driving a "new" car are perfectly normal, certainly for a new qualified driver. Miss Hubnut seems to have a talent for driving an old Citroën, so I think next up is the 2CV😄

Thank you for starting with the insurance coverage, its amazing how many people assume their insurance covers them to drive any other vehicle when it no longer does, especially if the vehicles are registered at the same address, Miss Hubnut looks like she enjoyed that.
    Edit-
Carley done bloomin good there, I think she could drive any of the conventional fleet without issue, she certainly has the natural ability to become an excellent driver in a very short amount of time, well done!

I was impressed by the smoothness of Miss Hubnut's gear changes.

Exactly why some days I crave a SEAT Marbella CLX in bright red again. I bought one new and drove it out of the dealers in Oldham straight to Bournemouth in September in 1992. The lady I was going to see then is the same as the one who has been my wife for 29 years and mother to my two great kids. Cars hold memories - sold the Marbella to help finance a house purchase after I got a job with a car and have regretted it ever since. Maybe one last chance to revisit my youth.

This is such fun to watch as it is literally a repeat driving instruction episode between myself and my daughter just after Christmas 2023. I bought her (well me really) a 1974 Citroen GS Club 1220 as she said she's bored of driving moderns and wanted a classic. Well, the experience was very much the same as Miss Hubnuts, and I thought that after the first drive she'd be so intimidated by the brakes, steering, suspension etc that she'd hate it and I can then drive it. But no, she absolutely loves it, the rorty flat four engine, the smooth ride, the handling - she adores everything about it. I must say, it is such a brilliant little car, I'm so jealous it's her daily driver and not mine.

I loved the instrument pod on my Citroen Visa back in the 80s, similar to the left side one on the GSA.

That reminds me of how much time it took to get used to an older car. Designs up to the late 1980s seem to have been much more variable, and typically more work to drive. And then once an individual car had got a couple of decades on it, all sorts of little quirks and funny ways, not to mention the time it could take to just get used to the clutch. These days, you seem to just get into a car, look at the switches, and drive off. I have to say that for daily driving in a congested city, I prefer it like that, but it's good to be reminded that driving a car used to be an experience.

This video brings back memories of my first drive of a GS. It doesn’t matter how long you’ve been driving, these cars are WEIRD! It took me a few runs to get used to it (and it was a C-Matic, so no clutch to contend with), but there’s something oddly completely sensical about the unusual Citroen GS and GSA set up. I learned to really love the handbrake in the middle of the dashboard, the non-self cancelling indicators and the fingertip controls. Well done Miss Hubnut for taking it all in her stride and enjoying driving such a fantastically French car!

To go from a narrow, modern, more forgiving car to something which is wider, quirkier and very differently set up and tackle it with such aplomb as a new driver is very impressive. 15:10 "Lovely old Volvo truck there" - gosh I love your videos, there is so much going on all the time, however subtle and low-key ambience too. I had a GS Pallas for a few days, didn't scout her well, she was massively corroded in the back supports so she really broke down alas. But I had completely forgotten there was no power steering, surprisingly, having all the hydraulics going on all the time. When it had broken apart and cut off the hydraulics, and I had to emergency brake for some pedestrians it was no fun, until i found the awkward shuffle handle (the hand brake!) on the dashboard. Nobody under the car, so far so good! Happy Easter you two!

Very impressed- I first drove a GSA back in the 1980's, and although it was extremely quirky, relative to other 1980s cars it wasn't such a culture shock as other 1980s smaller cars also didn't have power steering, and were generally more differentiated from each other than nowadays. Miss Hubnut did very well, considering lack of experience in driving generally, but in a much more demanding older vehicle.
Would love to see Miss Hubnut tackle a Series 2 Landie, or would that be cruel?

My first classic experience was my wife's uncles classic a 1957 Austin A40. There is no synchromesh in 1st, the steering is heavy and very imprecise and it was a real experience. A lot of fun. Looks like things in the 80s were a bit easier but nowhere near as straightforward as today. There's actually a big difference between my 2020 golf and our other car a 2012 mini cooper S. Although a mini is set up to be involving and the golf to be easy.

Oh you two have taken me back to age 17 & 1/52nd and my second driving lesson in a metalic green GS. no brake pedal, just a button on the floor. my driving instructor was my step-father (shares some of Ians character traits) who was keen for me to get a very rounded appreciation of cars, him being a part-time car trader. the first lesson had been in a dark green Austin 1100, the 3rd lesson in a red XJ12 Auto. after that trio, everything else was by and large forgettable lol.
having never forgotten the GS, some 15 or so years later I bought my then wife a white BX 1.4 which was a somewhat more refined idea. I missed the aircooled engine of the GS though.
maybe Miss Hubnut might like to take a leaf from my book...

My driving instructor told me the correct position for driving a car, is to adjust your seat base so that the back of your thigh is firmly resting on the front of the cushion when the clutch is fully pressed down, then adjust the back of the seat until your arms are slightly bent at the elbow at the quarter to or ten to two position. Then, you adjust mirrors accordingly. Whilst Carly struggles with leg reach, she still looked a bit too close to the steering wheel. Don't know if this has changed in 30 odd years. Always difficult getting used to a different clutch though!

Well done Carly. You where amazing, specially as a new driver. I think if it had been me, I'd have shoved Ian's camera where the sun doesn't shine. He's got one in a million in you 👍

Driving older vehicles is definitely a different subset of driving skills and you nailed it on your first try. Now you're getting first-hand experience of what all those people who say you need to 'know' an older car to drive it well! More experiences like this will absolutely make you a better driver too, adds to the knowledge base. I reckon driving
Betty should be next, have the experience of wafty torque mated to an automatic slushbox. If this is going to be a bit of a mini-series then TWC should be the crowning glory and preferably in perfect weather and where mistakes won't be punished!

Well done Carly. It's one of the bigger challenges as a driver, swapping between cars that differ in size and engine/gearbox characteristics. Some Continental driving one day...
I think I might be a bit odd... I've always cancelled indicators myself never wishing to rely on self-cancelling.
    Anybody else do the same?

You did really well Carly! It would take me a wee while to adjust to driving something like Giselle and I've been driving for over 30 years.

Miss HubNut nailled it. Looked like the steering was a bit of a workout. Impressed how quickly she got to grips with Gisele.

You took the same route my dad used to take me in my mark 1 fiesta when I was learning nearly 30 years ago.👍

    Great shout on Veygo.
With the crippling cost of insurance insuring my 'tow car' for occasional use like this is now an option.
Way less than half the price of my previous 'day insurer'.

Well done Carly! Im about to start driving an old car again after a long hiatus. I hope I will adjust as well. Re Ian driving stuff like he stole it. You will enjoy doing that to your new 3 pot. I love giving my smart engine the beans.

How cool was that, eh? So pleased Miss Hubnut had the courage to have a blast in an "unconventional" vehicle - and a classic one at that. Also rapt that she enjoyed it! As for which one to drive next? I'd like her opinion on the 2CV, as we've heard Ian bestow much praise and profess much enthusiasm for the wee beast, it would be good to hear it from someone who has never driven one as to their first impressions. Is it a car you need to grow into or is it one that you can just get in and be comfortable in? ...and what's that body roll truly like to a newby in the driver's seat? I'd never throw TWK at Miss Hubnut so soon after her successes in getting a license and some long distance driving! Let's get used to the unconventional before we go to the level of weirdness and totally unusual that is the Invacar, eh?!
By the way - I see Giselle has something in common with my Stag. Her wipers don't actually get rid of a small central area of disappointment until the windscreen is totally wet and the driver's wiper (in Giselle's case) pushes the water all the way over into the path of the passenger's one for it to wipe away. Until that time, there's a water line that sits annoyingly between the two......but to adjust the wiper so that it pushes it over from the get-go, means it will park about a quarter of the way up the screen and look odd when the wipers are not in use (another bugbear of mine!). That's why I've never adjusted the Stag's ones either. Funny what we spot about our cars and the little quirks we have regarding them, isn't it?
    All the best

Worth knowing about Veygo, thanks. I used a day insurer to drive my uncle’s Puma recently and that was £22 for 24 hours whereas the quote from Veygo was far less for a much longer period of cover.
