I’m 61 and I remember how hissy and bad a lot of vintage gear was. I’ve owned 1950s and 60s guitars and amps. I play PRS these days and I’ve almost finished selling my old effects pedals. They couldn’t compete with my new dirt pedals and my Mini Vent. A Leslie in a pedal…they couldn’t do that in 1977 when I started playing.

The used market for all audio gear is terrible right now.
Loads and loads of gear was bought during and immediately after Covid, and mostly at top dollar. Now loads of people who no longer have time for that pursuit of learning guitar, or who no longer feel the need for that 23 guitar collection, are dumping product, while new prices are sinking because of inventory glut.
Add in high fees and state taxes to make that space for receiving a fair market value for used items exceedingly small, and used prices are pushed artificially high in an effort for sellers to even approach getting that fair market value.
The used market is brutal right now. Modular synths are no different right now.

Rule 1. Establish a relationship with your music store whether it be local or online. Rule 2. always ask for a lower price. If you never ask, the answer is always no. If you do ask, you will usually get a good deal.

My Dad Was sent to Randolph AFB twice. No matter where you lived on the base, you'd hear trainer jets around the clock. If you wanted to go to a snack shop or bowling alley or even to school you had to go toward the noise. Al the flight lines were just inside the perimeter fence. There was one way out, most of the time, and one alternate route, part of the time. The center of the base was the Officers Club and pool. You had access to the other pools but they were across the street from a flight line. Military dependent life was a microcosm of society and you lived with rules and privileges which only became apparent after you got out. I don't recall anyone saying the sound of jets was comforting.

Comment on the Floyd. My Peavey would go out. Highly rated local shop couldn't solve the problem. I asked them to try again with the owner diving in. He actually found that the knife edge had gone flat so it was rocking enough to make it inconsistent on return. They replaced the bridge at cost after talking to Peavey. Problem solved. Very esoteric.

Regarding the gx1 question. Maybe not the same problem, but I've seen multiple situations where the nut is loose and the bolts need tightening. Not the screws that lovk the strings, but the bolts screwing it to the neck. That would normally fix tuning stability

Well i bought a pedal from a local store that stopped working for no obvious reason. Went back to the store a year later with it but turned out the warranty had expired by one month so they couldn’t do anything. Couple of months later they called me up and said i could get i new pedal from the store for their buying price from the manufacturer. Thought it was a pretty cool gesture from their side. I try to support the local store as much as my wallet allows.

Hi Phil. The viewer asking about the anniversary Crestwood Custom: I have a 1969 Kalamazoo Crestwood Custom. Have had new since 1969. No issues with the Trem and tuning as long as strings are good and broken in. The new anniversary model has a coil spring under the trem arm, similar to a Bigsby arm. The original had no coil spring, and worked perfectly. They changed the trem system on the new model. Not sure exactly why it was changed. They also did not install a third strap button on the back of the guitar adjacent to the neck, as was factory on the original. Gotta say, your podcasts are extremely interesting. 2 hours flies by with all the informative content! Seems like 15 minutes! Well done!

This or this or that is good or even fantastic, but the other/ newer stuff fits my personal needs better!

Phil, I'm unquestionably in your “camp” on the “Vintage vs. Modern” issue! I guess nostalgia and sentiment DO count for SOMETHING with SOMEBODY; but the mindless, ego-based rhetoric and posturing that often accompanies it has NO redeeming value to me. If the gear looks great, feels great, works great and inspires a job well done...AND fits the budget (all EASILY attainable these days)...I'm ALL SMILES!! 🙂

Hey Phil, Gibson does still use weight relief on various models. They have 2 lines, a traditional line and a modern line. Most of the Les Pauls from the modern line (Classic, Modeen, Studio) have weight relief bodies. The traditional line doesn't have weight relief.

Hey Phil, not sure if you have heard of Bog Street picks but they have some picks in there line up with the same idea as the three sided picks you talked about. I switched to them a few years ago and haven’t looked back. The whole in the middle is such a game changer for me as I hold my picks a little unorthodox. I honestly never thought about how much picks change your sound and playing style.

    Hi Phil & hi people,
I have a great ‘77 Fender P-bass. I loved it dearly (after hating it the first years I owned it... 😉), because it became just too heavy to carry it for a four one hour set gig. (I’m even older than Phil is, 😄). I’m 51.
I just could not play it anymore.
There are some great other basses I own and play, but I just love the neck of this ‘77 P. Not because it’s better than the others (it’s not), but because I was so used to it since owning and playing it since I owned it (‘91). For years, it was my only bass.
Well, fate saved me because there’s (at least) one thing Fenders got working for them that Gibsons (wich I love) don’t have: the bolt on design.
I tried different other P-bodies with the ‘77 neck, and after several years i’ve found a body that feels and sounds great with it: a buddy of mine found a ‘82/‘83 Squier P bass alder body.
They’re working great together! I’m happy playing the P-bass neck I hated and got to love.
The ‘77 heavy ash body’s now on the wall: it’s a piece of art now. 🤣!
    🖖

Received an email from my Sweetwater Rep. warning that Yamaha and Fender will be implementing price increases across the board in August. Anyone else get a similar email?
When dealers are flush with inventory, production is slowing down, and dealer prices are being reduced to MAP, why would Fender increase prices? We were told that Fender over produced during the COVID boom. So, how does a manufacturer get away with increasing prices when demand is dwindling, inventory is high, and production is down?

I would like to thank you on your advice regarding the guitar market (though used market may not be identical, it still applied, apparently). I got a couple of pedals I've wanted for years, the two of them would retail new around £350; used, total averaged around £280-300. I put in pretty deep offers for each item, separate sellers and they were both accepted immediately, totalled at £215, which is essentially the cost of one of the pedals new...

When I met with each seller, they had reduced their price about 50 to 150 already and I made an offer 50 below that standing there with cash in hand and pointed out one needed a set up and the other I'd have to get a gig bag, and in each instance the seller said OK.
    (3) I bought a 70's era strat new in 1979 when I was a dumb teenager not knowing those strats were considered crap quality and I got one with the 3 screw bolt-on neck. I soon came to HATE that 3 screw deal because I was out gigging in bands running around the stage jumping off of risers doing the hard rock thing and that neck constantly shifted on me knocking it out of tune and I was always jerking the neck back into place to get it back in tune. when I began to learn and acquire other strat-type guitars with 4 screw bolt-on necks I played that Fender strat less and less. I did experiment on it (again, it was not vintage then) putting in humbuckers, putting back the singles, putting in other humbuckers, back to the original singles and a different trem system, doing all kinds of stuff to it to improve it but always wound up putting it aside. I have it over 40 years later and still it is not near as good sounding or playing as other strat-style shaped guitars I own.

I have four nephews and I told them if they were interested in playing guitar I would leave them my vintage gear and none of them were interested so I just don't think the younger generation cares as much. Clubs that featured live bands have closed in my area and I think the market will continually go down, I just hope I am around long enough to afford a vintage les paul.

This episode was different, in that we learned that your wife is an incredible person. Kudos to her for helping you out with all of this!
Would you ever consider doing a podcast with your wife? Would be comparable to say Tom Segura and his wife doing a comedy podcast. It's rare to see and you two would stand out. The added pressure of random people from the internet could be a bit much though. You'd need a crew to help produce.

I honestly disliked the weight relief Les Pauls Gibson was doing, especially when they first did it, but in retrospect, I think it had as much to do with the electronics they were sticking in them at the time. I do like and always have liked lighter Les Pauls, but the best ones I have heard were using a lighter weght heavily aged wood. That being said, if you stuck Burstbuckers or Custom Buckers and 50's wiring in the weight relief ones, they might have sounded pretty good. Think it would be worth them doing again but doing better and seeing if there is a market for them.

I bought a covid era fender acoustics got it pleked from sweetwater before it was shipped to me. It came with a bad setup and didn't intonate well. I had to get a new nut/saddle from someone else. Its an awsome guitar now. got my money back for the plek job.

I own a 2006 Japanese Epiphone Les Paul Special (P90s) with the Gibson headstock too(they were JDM only market guitars not meant to be sold outside of Japan) and mine is rock solid in tuning. Sounds like the nut to me too with that person's problem. Killer guitars if you can find one! If they're in North America, it's because some one brought them back with them from Japan. And yeah I'll never end up with a birthday year guitar because a decent 1974 Gibson or Fender is as rare as hen's teeth since that was they were shite hit and miss, more miss though, quality during that era!

The birthday year guitar thing is hard for me because i was born in the middle of the 80s. Lotta questions choices made on guitars in the 80s. Do i want a guitar with enough points to be declared a weapon, or a strat with the worst version of a "locking trem" ever conceived. Choices, choices.

I went through the whole "Pre-CBS Fenders are GREAT and everything else is JUNK" period. Nowadays the guitars that were considered junk are commanding sky high prices. When I realized what was going on I became very cynical about the "vintage guitar market". (Not talking about fine Gibson, Epiphone or Guild archtops). Now, the only guitars that I can afford are made in Mexico or overseas but it's OK. I remember a couple of decades ago seeing prices of Les Paul models being sold new for $3,500 and thought they'd never sell but they did.
No, to me it's all a big money making racket that I think will shrink drastically one day.

I just bought an Epi SG Prophecy for 460 Euros and an Ibanez RG 565 for 670 Euros. Both "B-Stock." Both of them have damaged boxes. So the actual guitars are new. Prices are after tax.
I don't know if I will keep them, I probably could at least sell the SG for a profit. Both are great guitars for the money I have to say. I didn't need any of them but just bought them because they were so cheap.
