    Hey Phil,
    On the topic of the PRS Special, I too was able to pick one up earlier this year and ended up trading most of my guitar collection to do so (without regret!).
    Agree completely with your sentiments on the guitar. One thing I did to mine was to replace the volume pot with a push/push that allows me to isolate the middle narrowfield pickup, it's such a fantastic sound option, I'm a little baffled as to why PRS didn't include it as a stock option. Highly recommend giving it a try.

    Saw an interesting video recently on Billie Eilish. People were asking this influencer if she used autotune, and the person in the video analyzed two versions of the song. She was obviously slightly off pitch quite a bit even on the studio recording. Then he analyzed a live performance, and it was obviously live and different. So Billie didn't use autotune in the studio or lip-sync to a pre-recorded vocal track live. The BACKING MUSICIANS on stage in the live performance were not actually playing the music that was going on in the recording, because they were EXACTLY the same as the studio recording. Very interesting stuff.

    Bedroom amp, I call them TV volume amps. Vox DA5 sounds great quiet. But the amp I use the most is a Pignose. Simple, crude, one knob. No fiddling with settings. And the tone has got to be in your fingers, cuz it ain't in the amp! And it reminds me of the old Gorillas from the '80's.

    The PRS Special is without a doubt my next guitar. I completely felt in love with this guitar. It’s just hard to buy it because it’s pretty pricey. But I want three guitars, a PRS Silver Sky, a PRS Singlecut 594 and the PRS Special semi-hollow. With those 3 additional PRS, I will pretty much have everything I need… until PRS finally release their take on the Telecaster with the Myles Kennedy signature (?).

    My first amp was a Crate G20. It was, looking back, terrible. But - it was cheap (affordable) and it made noise and it lasted for decades with no issues. Also - that PRS is stunning! And - I just googled the price which is, as you said, substantial! Anyways - enjoy it!!

  • @paulketchupwitheverything767
    @paulketchupwitheverything767 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Soon after I started playing I had an old 2x12 50W valve combo. I never really trusted it. Sometimes the valves would give a rattling sound. It was cumbersome to get in and out of my small car. Then some good sounding 50,60 and 75 Watt 1x12 solid state combos started coming on the market with gain stages and decent reverbs. I found them much more practical and reliable and have used solid state ever since. I think that a tube amp can sound better but if you are playing to an audience they are generally more interested in the whole song/band than the exact tone that the guitar player is getting.

    Caveat, the following is from my retail days in the late 90’s. Things may have changed since. Fender is typically what is called an A mark in retail which means the dealer cost is half or the LIST price. There is M.A.P. Which means minimum advertised price which you have to agree to with Fender. You can sell it for whatever you want, you just can’t advertise for less than what Fender says. So if a Fender List’s for $1999, it’s dealer cost is approx $1000, better for power bulk buyers. In general retail is built on a model of making about 30 points on an A mark item so 30% of 1000 is 300, so the guitar would retail for $1299. Which might also be what Fender wants the M.A.P. To be. Boutique items have smaller mark ups called B mark (cost is 60% of list) and C mark (not sure but higher than 60%). Boogie who have fixed pricing were basically selling for an approximate 30% over cost. When I used to sell Dual Recto’s they were 1299 new with a cost in the high 9’s.
    M.A.P. May have started in the late 90’s because the price wars between sole proprietors and Guitar Center and other chains was killing the perceived value of guitars like US Strats. We were selling solid color American standards for 499, sunburst for 549 to compete with GC back then. You made almost nothing on the sale. It was nuts.

    Most of my gear comes from pawn shops. I got a Fender 2008 AVRI 52 Tele with a botched rewire job for $499. It had a few other issues like a missing strap button but I could flip it for $1200. I have been soldering since 1966 and I know how to follow a wiring diagram. If you have a guitar you should buy the Guitar Player Complete Book of Guitar Repair.

    My dayjob is in IT. I worked for a Managed Service Provider prior to my current gig. In the MSP space many of the software and service providers (Microsoft and others) have been poaching customers from their CSPs (the Service Providers who are contracted to sell the products directly to the customer companies). I (and many others) feel that this is highly unethical. It is the manufacturers trying to cut out their dealers. Unfortunately, it is basically impossible to (in this space) to not work with the manufacturers who are doing this.

    Beautiful new PRS. I like what you said about PRS’ wood rating process. I have two core PRS guitars. One is a McCarty 594 standard top and everyone who sees it asks why it isn’t a 10 top. The other is a Mark Tremonti 10 top, but it has considerably less figuring than the McCarty. It’s still beautiful and I love the differences and how they both feel and sound.

    As a singer and trying to keep from drying out I 1) make sure I'm hydrated before performing; drink lots of water. 2) Stay away from diuretics, like alcohol and coffee. You have to do this way before your performance. And while we may think that speaking publicly or to an audience is no big deal; it is stressful and if you are not hydrated beforehand, you'll feel it. So if you're not fully hydrated don't drink extreme temperature liquids, lukwarm is the best. Pineapple juice is good. A good lozenge is Slippery Elm; it coats the throat.

    The direct to consumer model Fender, Gibson and others are pushing can keep more margin in the manufacturer's pocket BUT poses great risk to the manufacturer if their quality is poor. Retailers may be correcting many small problems at time of sale that would otherwise tank the manufacturer's reputation and brand if the customer has to work thru an 800 number to get a bad switch, buzzing fret or paint chip fixed. Sell a $1000 Strat for $900 online to cut your dealer out and collect $900 instead of $650 sounds good unless the guitar has to be shipped back to Fender for $100 and occupy $100 of bench time to fix a $30 problem the dealer could have fixed for you for just $30. The exact same thing may happen in the auto industry.

    • @LumaTo
      @LumaTo ปีที่แล้ว

    As good as modeling technology has gotten and most likely will get even better, it's still not the same as standing in front of a real amp and getting that interaction. I agree that even though tube amps are getting less common there's nothing that will replace that feeling of standing in front of an amp.

    At the moment in the UK Fender’s website prices are 10-20% more than you can buy from other online retailers, which would be bad even if their RRP’s hadn’t all gone up by 10-20% in the past few years. The prices of Fenders are now around or more of Gibsons- what ever happened to bolt on guitars being cheaper?

    I stopped by The Music Loft on vacation earlier this year to check out a Reverend Jetstream 390. Seems like a great shop even though I didn't buy the Jetstream. I made a similar impulse buy on PRS Studio in December. Love those LT pickups and the Nearfield humbuckers. Can't justify the money I spent ($4K+) but it just sounds better than all my other guitars. Had to get it.

    Mooer makes a mini whammy type pedal called a pitch step that's pretty decent.

    For the record, I enjoyed the Orangewood video. Maybe it's one that will pick up over time. Great new guitar! "Do what you love" as a job can also be "how to start hating what you love because you have to do it so much." Glad it hasn't happened to you.

    Man, that Orangewood video nearly had me buying a guitar. I still might get that guitar. I thought it was great. Sorry it did not get the required ratings.

    Part of the tube amp experience is the smell of cooking tubes... modelers are going to need smello-vision type technology

    About tube amps, maybe they will be like classical instruments such as violins, saxophones, bassoons, etc in an age when a synth can make a passable replica sound. If you paid $100 to see a symphony and they were all playing keyboards and using backing tracks, would you be cheesed?

    The thing with direct selling is customer service. Currently fender, et al don’t have direct consumer reps and processes to provide it. This will definitely cut into profits. As well as customer returns and the repairs the shops and dealers do now. Shipping departments will also have to grow. I believe if any of these are lacking, their efforts will fail.

    Congrats on the new guitar, Phil! You got me thinking, blue and purple are my favorite colors. And I don't own any guitars in those colors. Oh no, I feel G.A.S. coming back into my life! 😁

    If dealers discount Fender for example maybe manufacture will have to discount products. For most musician price is a big deal. Just thinking out loud!

    Yo Phil - I'd love to know what your fav finishes are on various guitars you like/own. Maybe a top 5 , would be cool to chat about. I really really love the look of those Burst SG's (the brown one you own)
