  • Hi! My name is Nicole. Thanks for joining us today and spending some of your time with me and my guide dog, Figaro.
    Since I've had a substantial decline in my functional sight, I have been taking Braille and Assistive Technology classes for a few weeks now.
    Today we welcome you to join Figaro and I for Braille and Assistive Technology classes. It will be interesting to look back at this video when I have gotten much further in my classes and have become more proficient. I typically don't watch my own videos back, but I might make a point of doing so with this one to see the change in my skill and reading speed and proficiency.
    Learning these skills is really tough as an adult learner, but I'm so grateful for the opportunity to read with my daughters again!
    Please subscribe to our channel and if you enjoy this video, give it a "thumbs-up"! We would love it if you'd join us on Instagram as well!
    This weekend we will be creating a video that is "All About Figaro" so if you have any questions about Figaro, his work, his training, or his role in my life and as a member of our family, feel free to put it in the comments and we will try to answer YOUR question during the video!
    Until next time!
    Nicole & Fig

    This video just came across my home screen. I just saw that you went to the same rehab school that I went to. I had Melody for braille as well. I live two blocks away from that facility.😊

    Another great video! To see the progress since your first video is amazing. I think I can sum you up in just one word, perseverance. You’re a great example of no matter how tough The struggle my be you keep on trying. Oh, by the way it was in the 90s on New Year’s day here in California. LOL

    Random thoughts: LOVE the video. I have that t-shirt & it's one of my FAVES! Got it at Fun Day in SR this year. I'm with Fig . . . I prefer bare "paws" to shoes, too. ;) Those ornaments are GORGEOUS. I'm glad I don't live in MN with the crazy snow. HA! Keep up the great work! You are amazing!!!

    It gets easier with time. In the beginning felt so slow and I feel like I never be able to do it quickly. Now I can do it without really paying attention. Practiced it really help.

    My question would be: How has Figaro adapted to being in a home with kids and still keeping his working mindset? Thank you for doing these videos and sharing your life! I will start learning Braille in the fall as part of the BLV teaching licensure process here in Indiana. I'm adding it to my existing teaching license. I'm very excited to get started! Your videos are so encouraging to me as I begin this process and think about the future of my students. :)

      Oh my goodness, I LOVE this!! What do you teach now? Thanks for the video love!! I really enjoy creating TH-cam Content, though it takes me a LONG time to edit independently LOL. It’s ok though-I LOVE a good challenge and it has definitely provided that as well!

      I have been teaching for about 22 years. The first 20 years, I taught students who are deaf/hard-of-hearing, mostly as an itinerant teacher. Then I took a slight detour and tried teaching all disabilities, but in one building. That was not the "we're all family" dream I had imagined. Lol... My corporation had been advertising for a second blind/low-vision teacher for a couple of years and the lady who is currently doing it is a sweetheart, so I decided to take the position. So I am working with students who are blind/low-vision right now. Only one is using Braille and she is a toddler, so it's easy to stay a step ahead of her right now. ;)
      I'm so glad you are up for the challenge of YouTubing and the editing process. I used to make videos for my students to help them learn and remember how to do things. Research says that editing out their mistakes to only show success is the best practice and I HATED the editing part!!!
      I am especially glad to see how creative you are with your crafts, first as just a crafty chick! But also as a woman with significant vision loss. This helps me get some ideas for things that can be meaningful to my students. And the crafts are beautiful things I can *try* to make for my own home... although I'm not all that talented with crafts. :o

    Great video! :-) are you learning unified English braille?

    • @theblindmomnextdoor
      @theblindmomnextdoor  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes. The system revisions made in 2016. I had learned a minimal amount of Braille years ago, so thankfully most of the substantial changes are just “hot it is” to me since I’m learning most of it now.

      CraftyBlindChick that’s good! :-) I completely forgot that I probably need to learn unified English braille to read things in school! That’s something I have to talk about with the DOR.

    I use voiceover and I have a suggestion. Sometimes I find it easier to dictate.

    • @theblindmomnextdoor
      @theblindmomnextdoor  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh, it’s DRASTICALLY easier to dictate, and I DO dictate. But, I’m at the very beginning of learning to use voiceover, and part of that is learning how to edit and type within texts and apps.
      Thank you for the suggestion-trust me, I DEFINITELY prefer dictation!
