I was really impressed by Enter Ghost, the only one I've read from this shortlist. Soldier Sailor is still on my TBR list. I think your prediction is solid!
Restless Dolly Maunder is still the only one that I've read. I think Soldier Sailor would probably be the next one that I'll get to. I almost picked up a copy when I was in Ireland and Scotland, but I decided to hold off knowing that it was about to be released in the US.
I completely forgot about your trip! Edinburgh is one of my favourite places in the UK. Did you have a great time / find any good bookshops? (I hope I didn’t miss a video you made about your trip but I have been quite busy recently)
@@rororeads All good! We had such a good time. Edinburgh really is a great city. We walked SO MUCH. I've become a huge fan of Thistly Cross Cider and am bummed I can't get it in the US. And so many great bookstores. Toppings was overwhelming--I couldn't even find the paperback fiction section for about twenty minutes! Lighthouse was fun to visit. But my favorite bookstore was Golden Hare. I just loved that shop.
I haven't read any of these books yet, but I own Enter Ghost, so I'm going to have to go with that one! I did, however, just finish And Then She Fell and really enjoyed it. However, a lot of that was because of some of my own personal experiences, so I'm not sure it would work for everyone.
Out of the long list, the short list, the every book I’ve read in 2024 list, I would love to see Soldier Sailor win. I was thinking it would be Brotherless Night that would win though since it has already won the Carol Shields prize, but I think I agree with you about Enter Ghost given current events. From the very few books I have read from the long list, I enjoyed Ordinary Human Failings most, much more than most of the short listed books actually, but still not nearly as much as Solider Sailor.
We are opposites! I think Soldier Sailor is going to win and I want Enter Ghost to win. I've read the entire longlist and I think both 8 Lives of a Century Old Trickster and In Defence of the Act were better books - technically, thematically and had better character development than River East, River West. Aside from that I think the judges got it right. Enjoyed watching your reviews!
I read Soldier Sailor before the longlist was announced and it is one of my favourite books of all time. I would love for it to win but I have a feeling Brotherless Night will win. I really enjoyed 8 Lives of a Century-Old Trickster from the longlist.
Loved your list and discussion particularly of Brotherless Night. I feel like I just copied your thoughts about it into my brain. So, you might want to sue me for plagiarism. Agree with your 1st and 2nd but my own list would shuffle the bottom 4 a bit. We agree with the book we want to win and the book we think will win.
I’m hoping for Enter Ghost but I think Soldier Sailor will win, partly because Enter Ghost might be too political for the Women’s Prize. The shortlist should have included In Defence of the Act - you’ll enjoy that one!
I reckon ‘soldier sailor’ will win but would like ‘Enter Ghost’ to. I hate read soldier sailor. Out of the long list I loved ‘In defence of the Act’ and And then she fell which I’m half-way through. I love the voice and it’s really taking me along with it
At this point I'd like Brotherless Night to win but I think Soldier Sailor will take the prize. I'm also really liking Ordinary Human Failings from the longlist 😊
Solider Sailor, My Winner kept on shelf loved.❤❤ River East River West could win as her first novel . I would read others by the author and keep it on my shelf 2nd favourite. Interesting, where does someone belong ? Enter Ghost - hated DF halfway, give to friend she liked it, and if this wins, is it a political win ? Could cause issues ? So I don't think it will win unless judges are making a statement. Brotherless night , possible, okay read but again given Charity not worthy off my shelf. The Wren - because she is due a win ? I liked but could have finished earlier, fed up poor old me due to the past history , grandfather's status given to a charity shop. Why !! Was Restless Dolly on list? author should have written bio . About to start Megan Nolan, ordinary human failings . loved her other book Acts of Desperation Megan Nolan should have bumped Dolly off the short list ! Fingers crossed, Solider sailor .
I think River East River West is the one I want to win but I think it will probably be Enter Ghost. I wish that ordinary human failings had made the shortlist
Going with Soldier Sailor will / should win. I'm glad Enter Ghost made the short list, but I don't think it necessarily makes sense to have it leapfrog a better all-around competitor. Corporate sponsors might appreciate a safer choice as well. 💸
I was really impressed by Enter Ghost, the only one I've read from this shortlist. Soldier Sailor is still on my TBR list. I think your prediction is solid!
Great summation. My favourite in shortlist is Brotherless night. My favourite overall was Ordinary human failings !
Love Love Love your channel!
Thank you Lydia!! How nice of you to say :) just checked out your channel. You have a new sub xx
Your list is the same as mine! I so agree with your number one

@@SupposedlyFun I’m so glad you had a great time!!
@@rororeads I'd love to visit again someday.
I really loved River East River West and Soldier Sailor but I agree with you and think Enter Ghost will win.
Interesting thoughts! I would like Brotherless Night to win, I think Enter Ghost will win... and I think Megan Nolan was robbed. Lol.
So many people have mentioned Ordinary Human Failings as the biggest upset. I'm definitely going to check it out :)
I am rooting for Enter Ghost but I think Soldier Sailor will probably win :)

I think either Soldier Sailor or Enter Ghost will win, but I do wish Ordinary Human Failings had been in the mix.

I have also read soldier sailor and enter ghost and have the same ranking. I have brotherless night still to read, but I have no interest on the rest

Soldier Sailor is a near perfect novel. Made it onto my most impressive books shelf.
Surprisingly, my list is in the same order as yours.
I think River East River West is the one I want to win but I think it will probably be Enter Ghost. I wish that ordinary human failings had made the shortlist
I'm in agreement with you. I would love Solider sailor to win.
Will win/should win: Enter Ghost. Longlist must-read: In Defence of the Act. The Brotherless Night commentary was misguided and generalizing.
