- Originally Designed To Be Paired With The GoPro3 Black! But Works With GoPro #3-9!
This remote was advertised as a GoPro Hero8 Black remote. Found out it was originally for the GoPro Hero3 Black in 2013. But after toying around with it i found it to perform well with my #5 & #8 GoPros. I'm sure if i had the real remote for the Hero8 (button controls are different) that i could access more available functions that the Hero8 unit has. So i made a simple video showing others how to access the basic functions of this GoPro remote.
But if you want to skip ahead to where i show how to "pair" the GoPro to the remote go to 4:36. Since i did this review others came forward (left comments) and everyone told me it works on their units ranging from #3 to #9. Let's see what the #10 holds!
UPDATE:
It definitely doesn't work on the 10 & up. Bummers. It does work on the 9's , but barely. for those that wrote in that it doesn't you have to try it 2x, sometimes 3x. Here's a message from one of my viewers-

Just picked one up on eBay for my Hero8 black and it indeed does work, took me a few minutes to get the pairing down correct. Once it Paired it worked perfect. Thanks again for doing the video I just saved myself about 50 bucks… Lol… The remote works perfect!
I only shop on eBay myself. I don't use Amazon.
I also wanted to mention as I noticed the battery being depleted I got down to one bar and had a tough time getting Wi-Fi reception as soon as I recharged the remote it worked fine again, so keep in mind you might have a problem with Wi-Fi connection if you get down to one bar on battery on the remote. I also noticed it won’t pair with a GoPro if I’m using the quick app, in order to get the remote to work again I go into settings and reset connections and then it will pair with the remote again no problem, just something to keep in mind If anyone’s having any issues. The remote works fine once you get used to how it works.
Skip to 4:39 if you want to avoid all the preamble about being duped by an eBay seller. Video is short on details like putting the old remote in pairing mode first, but beyond that, this works fine. I just paired my ancient remote I used with my Hero 2 to my Hero 8 Black and it functions perfectly.
I tried what you did, but it doesn't want to connect. Any further hints?
Make sure you put your old remote in pairing mode. From a Google search:
1. With the remote powered OFF, press and hold the red Shutter button on the remote.
2. While continuing to hold the red button, press the white Power button once briefly. The remote will power on and show two arrows moving towards each other. You can let go of the red button at this time. Now the remote is in pairing mode.
3. Put down your remote and pick up the camera again.
I tried with my GoPro 8 and it wouldn't pair. Just keeps looking and the remote has the pic of the camera with the arrows but they never pair up. BTW are you from Hawai'i?
Yes, i am. That older unit did pair-up with my 8. Wasn't happy with the dealer i bought it from because he falsely advertised it & gave no instructions with it. That's why i made this video.
I have the same problem. Go pro 8 does not pair with the control.
Found the solution down in the comments. Just keep the red button pressed while starting the control.

@@ScubaChris hey do you notice that when you’re using the remote, the GoPro won’t turn off automatically anymore? As long as the remote is on, the GoPro stays on until battery is dead. Even with the auto off turned on.
I have the same remote but I have a Gopro Hero 10. It doesn't want to pair.

Problem is a lot of companies selling these older models don't supply instructions because they're not sure if it does pair with the newer GoPro's. They're trying to sell obsolete units & leave it up to the customer to see if it still works. I have communications that show what i'm talking about. You can buy a remote that says it pairs with a GoPro 9 at a much higher price because they want that higher price. Or you can buy an older model like this & take a chance as it doesn't come with instructions or a warranty. I'm trying to share that it does still pair & showing how it works. Something what the eBay dealers won't/can't do. That's the problem.

Thanks for the info, Martin, but sadly it didn’t work for my 10. It went into pairing mode but just couldn’t find the camera.

I have a GoPro 8 and that doesn’t work. It only says remote on mine. It doesn’t say smart remote at all.
It works with all GoPro . I have used mine on the Hero 3 plus, works on my Hero 7 black and I’m sure it will work with my Hero 9. Setup is easy if you still need help.
If you look at advertisements some state that it only works with one model. These companies are lying to us. The one i bought mine from refused to respond when i asked for an instruction pamphlet or a URL link. They prefer you buy the newer more expensive models. They don't want you to know that the older models will still work, so they supply no instructions. They want you to eventually spend more money for a newer model that does have instructions. Have you seen what they're charging for those????

This method is not working on my Hero 9 and 10 :(
I'm not sure on the 10, i had an 8 which it sinced with. Then everyone texted me saying it was pairing with their 9's. This is a old unit but i did this video because it comes with no instructions. Sorry to hear it's still not compatible with the new 10's. You should try messaging those that replied using a 9. Here's a message from a 9 owner that says it works-

As an update to all it stops pairing when you use a 9. An 8 or older it's a cheap alternative that still works.
this remote won't pair with my gopro 9 :(
I've paired it with my 5 & 8. Others have said they've paired it with their 9's. One so far has said it won't work with the 10 though.

I've had viewers tell me it works with their 9's. It is an older unit & it works on my 5,7,8. Scared to get a 10 because i'm hearing the same old problems about heating to shared file issues. Might get the 9 and sell the 7 & 8. The 5 is an amazing workhorse! Keeping that.

Not sure on the models 9 and over. Works on my 8 & 5 though. Some have said their 9's work with it. When i got this no info came with it. BNIB. I had to figure it out.
@@ScubaChris Yeah, I have this same remote that works with my old Gopro Hero 3 Silver. I tried pairing it with my new Hero Black 11 today and it doesn't work. My remote versions is ARMTE-001 Ver 2.1.7. I also made sure the remote was in pairing mode via hit and hold the red button after like 5 seconds hit the power button once and you will see the pairing mode, then go to your camera to preferences, connect a device, smart remote and that is it. @@Slavko_Husam From what others are saying no. Some 9's work with it but the 10's & 11's don't as far as i know.
