To prevent under-bleed start with a clear coat to seal, and then add your color.

I am beyond what you would call a newbie...haven't even reached the newbie stage yet! I have a laser that I've yet to use because I truly don't know were to began. I've been watching a lot of videos to try and get a handle on were to start. Never understood what they would mean by masking and never knew what type of paint to use. They tell you to mask and then paint but... Anyway, I want to thank you for taking the time to explain the very basics of this project. You've cleared up quite a few questions that I had. Looking forward to searching and watching more of your videos. I've already hit the subscribe button. Thanks again.

I I have watched numerous videos about lasers and I noticed one common feature "THE BEARD". Cannot grow a beard so I guess I will just hope for the best if I ever get to buy my own laser. Kidding aside the artists that produce these videos and art pieces are amazing. I cannot draw a straight line with a ruler or draw or paint a picture, so I really appreciate what you all do. The nice thing about this approach is that you can easily determine after half an hour whether you need another layer of acrylic paints or not.
A buddy who works a lot with vinyl cutters uses a cheapo set of actual dentist tools to weed out parts of the mask, low-quality stuff you wouldn't want anywhere near your mouth but is perfect for detail work like that.

I haven't tried this myself yet, but I heard from a reliable source (Bob at ILTMS) that if you put on a quick coat of clear finish BEFORE you use paint, it will help prevent bleeding under the masking tape! That way you don't have to spend extra time sanding off paint bleed. :)

Very helpful video! Thanks! I had no idea you could do this through Corel Draw! Now I’ll be spending the day figuring out if it will work with my ORTUR. This is very effective when painting with vinyl stencils on wood.

I use a similar technique when making signs with my CNC. I first spray my wood with a sealer (clear lacquer for interior projects or spar urethane for exterior projects). I then apply a strip of Oramask 951 (instead of painter's tape). Once carved, I reapply a thin layer of sealer to the exposed wood. By sealing the wood, I can use spray acrylic paint without concerns of bleeding.
I'm looking at a Xtools S1 in the near future. I didn't think about using the same technique for the laser carvings until this video. Great work!
