It has grown on us the more that we play. I still probably like the original better - but if you play Marine for what it is, and not in comparison to the original, I think it is different enough to earn a place in a collection alongside the original.
Judging by this review, it sounds like it preserves a lot of the theme of Dominant Species, but replaces several relatively unique mechanisms with more mainstream ones. Which would make it an ideal purchase for someone who loves the idea of the original, but has a problem with the reality of playing it. Which I suppose is fair enough - people who like the original game for its quirks still have the original.
Thanks for a great review, I think you could have both in your collection as this one is shorter and has less take that and perhaps more suitable for traditional euro players
I've definitely felt that the original Dominant Species overstayed its welcome a bit. My preferred solution to that is to discard any remaining evolution cards at the end of each round and draw a new set for each round - that speeds up the game enough (at least for 3-4 players) that it doesn't drag on. I've only played DSM once so far (as a 2p game) but it certainly seemed shorter.
See the thing is, a large part of why this one is shorter cause removing 10 cards from the deck is in the base rules. If you didn't removes those cards this would be way closer to the original in playtime. I do still love the tension of having to play you actions and select them ahead of time.
I played a lot of Dominant Species. I tried Marine and felt it was more of a low key point salad game rather than the fun competitiveness of the original game
Played this last week. Dominated blue cone for 75. So no 24 is no where near enough to guarantee you keep it Grant 😂 It’s ok game but nowhere near as good as the original. Changes to action selection and domination were poor choices imho. Ymmv

Appearing on The Players' Aid video once makes me want to do it again.
My 9 year old can play this well, which tells me its very intuitive.
Alexander, what's on your shirt?
Cucumbers & apricots?

Subject has no interest whatsoever for me...
