  • A #Clan #Omnimech and #Assaultmech built to invade the #InnerSphere, the #Warhawk, or #Masakari is one of the original 16 Clan mechs to be documented in Technical Readout #3050. This #ClanSmokeJaguar monstrosity has a fearsome reputation, but also has some real, true weaknesses as well.
    We'll be going over all of that, as well as briefly discussing some other elements of its history.

      In Mechwarrior Living Legends whenever I see the opponent using a Masakari. I always make a joke that the Cooking Curry was coming. In my language which is Malay/Indon.
      Masak: Cooking

      At least the Jags held up their end of a bargain, can't say the same for the Dracs. There is a reason that after a fight with the Jags in a joint Drac/Fed Com/Merc operation that I snagged all that I could carry both as working mechs and salvage, sabotaged a few drac mechs leaving only a handful of Dragons, and sent a message back to the Jags challenging them to a rematch while pretending to have that authority. Needles to say it didn't go over very well for the Dracs and I have no regrets as they had screwed me harder than that in the past by not paying me and stealing my four star league era highlanders after a hard fought campaign and leaving us with a barely salvageable black jack, two badly damaged dragons, I think there was one other mech but I'm pretty sure that was a prior salvage, a handful of scrap, and guns pointed at our backs as we were told to stuck it up and leave and that they owe us nothing despite is fulfilling the contract to above expectations just because we were mercs. Funny thing is one of the mechs we took before phoning the Jags was one of the highlanders they stole from us. Their leader was the same guy that screwed us over, he didn't recognize us but I remembered him especially since he'd kept one of the Highlanders for himself.

      I’m working on a balance patch for MC to fix all the oddities of the game. It does actually have a heat system to an extent, heat sinks are included as part of the weapon tonnages. Because of this each chassis comes with 10 extra tons of pod space to simulate the free engine heat sinks. Plus the W versions are criminally under armored (in some cases half of the chassis maximum) so under those conditions you can get some pretty bonkers load outs

    I am surprised you covered the H configuration instead of the C though, which is considered one of the best ones the Warhawk has. Like most other clan mechs, when fighting it as IS always attempt to close the gap. The Warhawk (Prime) doesn’t have good close-quarters capability, and in a close range fight they will have to push their heat or sacrifice a lot of damage to just fire the guass rifle. You are going to lose armor, mechs, and pilots but you have a much better chance of winning the closer you get.

    A lot of early clan mechs are designed to still hit you with the firepower of a mech of its tonnage. While missing half the systems. Redundant weapons. With the prime, the idea is to move a turn or two firing three and then stop to fire two aimed shots with ppc and the lrm launcher as a finisher to their target. Keep its target numbers fluctuating compaired to the forces you put in front of it and use that tonhelp them getninto their possitions by giving ur opponent tuff choices on who to target. Use the left and right side as u turn and repeat the process to tank more damage. As people have mentioned its a fire magnet that Excells at long range if it becomes your opponents main goal. Use that against them u should be able to predict their movements as they hunt your queen piece.

    This is probably my second favorite mech behind the Mad Cats, tied with the Hellstar for obvious reaons. Disgustingly OP in the games due to CERPPC's, but spamming energy weapons, not having to worrying about ammo, a chicken-walker, and faster than most assaults makes this a top pick for me. I like how most MechWarrior games used this very mech to encourage player marksmanship and the taught you the "subtle" nuances of heat management. The only way it could get better is it had jump jets.

    Another great overview....but these older clan mechs do highlight their biggest weakness...heat...give them easyish shots on an expendable target and they invariably shutdown and become easy kills for the rest...that's why I like to use prisoners in my anti clan fights...they get freedom if they survive; but will be expected to cause overheating and so more than likely won't live long enough to see said freedom :-)

    In MWO and on Table Top you can get around the negatives of the Warhawk simply using coolant injectors and pilot skills to bring down the heat penalties and just bring it within tolerance levels to prevent catastrophic failure with an alpha strike. The only other solution is to underarm it for it's weight as stripping armour is a never for assaults.

    another fine example of what good is Firepower if you can't use it!
    the Warhawk Sounds deadly with quad PPC's in it's prime form, but weak thermal compensation hamstrings it BADLY!
    an Alpha Strike which Clan Warriors are known for can cripple this mech quickly in a single round of combat.
    leaving the mech nearly immobile or Shut Down entirely if the pilot is lucky. or erupt in a truly catastrophic Ammunition Detonation. and critical damage to the pilot if they are unlucky.
    an Awesome 9Q IS DEADLY as it brings the same quartet of PPC's to the field, but HAS the thermal compensation available to actually USE them!
    however, unlike some designs that need major work to make them dangerous.
    the Warhawk requires only an easy Weapon Swap.
    replacing the Clan ER-PPC's for IS Standard ones means this Mech with minimal effort becomes a dangerous foe to be taken seriously on the field.
    while giving up some damage potential and range, this is countered by being able to fire all 4 PPC's continuously, overheating only by it's movement around the battlefield. thus allowing it to consistently deal damage that is still at a higher average potential than the Prime.
    dropping the LRM allows the addition of 1 more DHS and the tonnage needed to accept the larger IS weapons allowing this unit to move freely about firing it's weapons seemingly on a whim whenever it needs them.
    while the Clan ER-PPC is a fearsome and deadly weapon, it is also a double edged sword!
    as dangerous to the sender as it is to the recipient of it's wrath.
    that huge damage potential and head capping ability is offset by an equally huge thermal signature that most Clans for whatever reason universally never manage properly.
    1 ER-PPC can be managed quite well. especially when paired with cool running supporting weapons.
    but when you bunch them up like the Prime Model, you swiftly reach a point of no return where you cannot compensate for the heat loading that comes when you pull the trigger.
    4x ER-PPC's is 60 heat! meaning you need 30 Clan Double Heatsinks to dump that heat load. and become heat neutral.
    I don't know of many Mechs that have that sort of room onboard outside of large engines that can absorb them. otherwise you will run out of critical slots before you run out of heatsinks.

      No, strip 2 ER PPCs Add another ton of ammo and two LRM 10 launchers. Clan lrms have no min range 2 more heat sinks and 2 medium pulse lasers. Sure if you alpha strike you're overheating the medium pulse lasers but the idea is burn your 8 rounds of LRM ammo before you use the pulse lasers or if you have them close leave off a ppc. The lrms if they hit which they should when you're close provide the same crit finding as an SRM 6 launcher and do a lot more damage. It seems like you're giving up a lot of potential damage but due to heat management it is nearly equal. Once you're out of ammo for your LRM 2 ER PPCs and 2 medium pulse lasers attached to unending heat sinks isn't something that is just ignored but isn't exactly a fire magnet either.

    Ah yes, the glorified hangar space heater, or the Clan Awesome, as I sometimes refer to it as. I like this thing - as someone who also enjoys the Awesome.
    On a Mech5 note, as usual... Clan mods are nice, but I quite like that the KGC-KJ allow players to build a 100-ton Warhawk Prime, and like another machine I'm thinking of off the top of my head - looking at you, Raksasha - extra space and tonnage works wonders.

    The Warhawk is an interesting idea, but it was designed by FASA with clear flaws. Its an even bigger brother to both the Hellbringer and Adder.
    Like nearly every Clan mech the Warhawk overheats, in this case it means nearly half of the weapons are unable to fire. It carries a single LRM-10 which is mediocre for a missile volley on an assault mech. It only seems to be there so the ammunition can explode if you overheat. Best suggestion would be to not carry the ammunition.
    An upgraded version of the Warhawk would be the Hellstar, which has enough heat sinks to actually fire all its ER PPCs continuously, and better distributes them between 4 locations rendering it hard to kill.

    • @bthsr7113
      @bthsr7113 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, the Hellstar is most of what the prime wanted to be, just less accurate and without the minimal indirect fire. Though being able to use the full firepower regularly more than makes up for that.

    I play many Smoke Jaguar mech's. The War Hawk(Prime) is a great simple mech. Though, I strip the LRM10 off for more heat sinks. I put left arm PPC's on 1 in chainfire mode. And put right arm PPC's on 2 in chainfire mode. This helps with the heat also forgives for inaccuracies. It also allows you to peek around corners and fire one arm or the other. The War Hawk is at its worse when your alone sniping and being caught by brawling lights or fast mediums. It functions well as a support unit to assault's just be aware of its 85 tonnage and have cover when you attract attention. It's comfortable on the flank and I feel it's the best position for it as your supporting and have support near by if jumped by Light or Mediums.

  • @tylr3669
    @tylr3669 ปีที่แล้ว

    I went full support roll with it and had alot of success.
    3 lrm 15 5 mpulse las. Lots of ammo, some extra heat sink capacity, and keep the comp. No one wants to stand on the down range end of 45lrms, and no one wants to run up into the grill of 5 med pulses either.
    But my god is the prime an oven...like a green egg! nuts!

    Ah, the Warhawk. My tabletop mech of choice, actually. I started with my own custom star of Diamond Shark mechs, two Piranhas, two Mongrels, a Mad Cat, and my Warhawk.
    The thing about the Warhawk is, there are two ways to look at it.
    The first is, this is clearly a Clan duelling mech. It's designed for headshots. It can do that well.
    The second is, this is a sniper, not a brawler. This mech is the Predator alien. Remember the movies where they actually use the plasma caster properly, and the Predator is nightmare fuel? He barely glances at a guy and suddenly the dude has a new basketball sized hole? Yeah. That's the Warhawk.
    Let the other guys go for glory, the Warhawk can stay in the background, quietly putting down mechs. If it's caught out, it can probably take down any other single mech with an alpha strike.

  • @Usersunited
    @Usersunited ปีที่แล้ว

    Honestly i feel like the warhawk prime was configured in such a way that when it loses a side during a battle, it still has the ability to throw 2 ERPCC's down range. A lot of the "too hot to alpha strike" Clan mechs are essentially built to still be a mence after losing some weapons, as opposed to a lot of IS designs that just become as deadly as a wet blanket if you take out the correct side torso.

    Arguably one of the most imposing mechs in the game; other mechs have come and gone that are more heavily armed or sophisitcated but "the building that walks like a man" in it's primary confguration is still an utter horror with it's 4 ERPPCs could murder damn near anything that it ran up against it.

      there is even simpler and deadlier: the Hellstar... 4 erppc, no targetting computer, but enough heatskin to alpha strike over and over again without overheating in the slightest... the kind of horror you field only when you no longer want your opponent to be your friend, the only saving grace being that it didnt exist during the invasion

    • @guitarhausdoesntknowwhatac3285
      @guitarhausdoesntknowwhatac3285 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@thorveim1174 True, but the Hellstar is also 80 years younger then the Warhawk and by the time it was in the field there were dozens of mechs that could credibly threaten it.
      By contrast, when this thing made contact with the innershpere in 3049 there was effectively nothing that could credibly stand up to it; it's nererst rival would have been the Awesome which was slower and had half it's armor.

      @thorveim1174 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@guitarhausdoesntknowwhatac3285 to be fair to the hellstar, it doesnt use any later era technology, and could have been built in the clan invasion era. Its just a piece of pure minmaxing with basic clan tech. Standard armor, endosteel, 4 er ppcs, an XL engine and 30 double heatsinks, and thats it. Nothing about it makes it really out of place for an invasion era mech since its sole niche is "4 er ppcs, no overheat"

    My one and only custom config for this in the tabletop was to bolt on a few Coolant pods usually by striping armor and either downgrading the LRM10 to an SRM6 with a half ton ammo or just dropping the missiles altogether (usually the latter as I got more ), either way the result was always the same namely my opponent pissing themselves on the second salvo and running for cover/hills on the third one guy actually surrendered when I threw out a forth alpha in a row (fyi that game I dropped the missiles entirely) though to be honest by the forth alpha there wasn't much left of his force to really do much else

  • @graywolf7132

    I like the C Variant the best. start with the dual PPC's at extreme range, switch to the twin large pulse laser's and 1 PPC at long and medium, all without any heat build up. save all 4 main guns for short range, and you still have only a small amount of heat build up, plus you have no ammo onboard meaning zero chance of ammunition explosion. Finally a flamer, because, if you're going to face infantry, you might as well make a war crime out of it.
    Ironically, this was also the variant called out in the fluff of the technical readout as having heat problems. (despite it's 44 cooling meaning it could fire all four main guns and only generate 6 heat, movement and flamer notwithstanding.) You make's you wonder if the author of the bit was unaware of the prime configuration.

    Am I the only one who simply swapped out the ERPPCs for Large Pulse Lasers?
    I almost never used the ERPPC on clan mechs because of the heat, the heat and the heat. Add to that, I was already used to the PPC hitting for 10. So a "laser" with 2 better range and a -2 bonus to hit made it an automatic include on literally everything. I really hated the ERPPC unless I had specifically built around it. That simple swap made the Warhawk so unbelievably deadly, it was like it was performing as intended and living up too and exceeding its awesome reputation. Id also downgrade the LRM system too a trio of Anti Missile systems and 2 tons of supporting ammo for them. Then stand off and slash my opponents apart with more consistent long range exchanges. I truly love the Warhawk. Easily my second favourite Clan mech behind the Viper. Which is all lasers and targeting computer on a 75ton frame.
