  • Hello vinyl community!
This video is all about cheap solutions to vinyl cleaning and preservation. I am demonstrating some cleaning stuff I found during a recent trip to the Dollar Tree.
These are only suggestions! However, these methods and materials work as well as many of the "Pro" methods I have tried.
    Peace..

I just tried the vinegar window cleaner- same one from Dollar Tree- on a Disney Christmas record that I had been given 40 years ago as a gift (that would have made me about 3 or so). The amazing thing is that the cleaner salvaged the record, reducing the pops and lifting so much dirt that it now plays properly after I had written it off years ago. This was such a gift.

Never bought Queen...it was just around anyway. But that jazz album caught my interest. Some day some scientist will say the dust in record grooves is like a time machine, and it holds the DNA and essence of all who lived with it, like the notion that sand grains are like film grain and holds images from ancient time. So don't scratch your head, that dandruff will wind up on the dark web...

Vinegar and water that's what I use. Have used the Dollar Tree Awesome Window Clean liquid to clean my 45s. I have a AMI Rowe jukebox so my 45s are very important to me.
1st Use an compressed air to blow off any dust from 45s that I purchase
2nd Brush off any loose dirt with a painter's brush
3rd Mist the grooves with the vinegar mixture
4th Then use a sponge or a Microfiber to clean in a circle
    5th Dry off
6th Insert into jukebox and enjoy
My only thought on this video is not to lay a dirty side of the vinyl on the towel. I clean all my 45s and albums while holding them in my hand or against my clean tshirt that I am wearing.

I was in a modern bathroom today. Crazy modern. You get a square bar code from the barrister, if no one is in the bathroom, (there's a monitor on the wall outside that not only let's you know someone is in there, it has your number up on the screen, and it tells you if someone else is ahead in line, but they don't have to stand in line, they can hang out and keep an eye on that screen. So, you finally wave your barcode under a scanner, sexy red light, and the door magically opens by itself, and then closes by itself after you. You wave along the side of the toilet to flush. Too much! But the trippiest part is the faucet. pipe comes toward you over the sink, then splits off into a bar going left and a bar going right. These bars still hover over the sink. You slide your hands under the center area, and water shoots down on your hands. You pull your hands back, and then slide them under the left and right bars, and warm air blasts out of the bars as you slide your hands around. So, it's not like a Dyson, but even more modern. But that blast of warm air was telling me...this is what I want to blow onto my damp cleaned records. Not hot enough to warp them. But the intensity of that bar of warm air would be the best way to finally remove particles still sitting in grooves. Right now, that sink would work for my 45's, with no changes at all.

19.99 for record doctor cleaner and it cleans like a champ .
The cleaner makes one full gallon of cleaner .
Don't make that diy cleaner you'll ruine your records in time break down the plasimer in the vinyl .
You can use a small amount of methonal in the cleaner but good cleaners like audio intelligent #6 one step has menthonal in it .

Thanks for the information. Good advice!
Unfortunately, some people don't even clean records! You can see that in the crates of thrifts stores, bargain bins and antique shops. My advice in this video was only a cheap solution for people either unwilling or unable to buy a 'proper' cleaner for $20 or higher. Both methods shown in this video contain NO alcohol or methonal and are much better than simply playing a dirty record on your turntable.

i have that same spry, smells strong of vinegar. But this contains additional preservative that isn't named only mentioned on the ingredients. Those particles washing over the vinyl, leaving miniscule but present film particles in the grooves. Those particles of preservative chemicals are now transfered to the stylus as it glides along its path. I would only recommend this if somebody plans on using a beat up kit to play those hazy, filmy records tainted from dollar tree cleaner.

    • @oddboxTopper
      @oddboxTopper  4 ปีที่แล้ว

I haven’t used the vinegar cleaner on records since making this video. This was just an experiment to see if cheap cleansers could be used to clean records. That’s why I used a 50 cent thrift store record. It just happened to be a Queen LP. I still have and enjoy that Queen LP by the way! I have since started using the Vinyl Vac cleaning system which comes with its own safe cleaning solution. It works great for an inexpensive record vacuum cleaner. I am only trying to give suggestions of cheap cleaning options for collectors on a budget that might be unable to afford an expensive cleaning system. If nothing else, a spray of distilled water and a wipe with a clean cloth is better than just playing a dirty old record.

I use a few drops of clear dishwashing liquid on a sponge to clean my records. All is needed is a few drops, wet the sponge with warm water and clean the record in a circular motion. Then rinse. The first thing I do after rinsing is to completely dry the label so the water doesn't have a chance to soak through and damage it over time. I usually don't use label protectors, unless the label(s) is already damaged. But the vast majority of the time, I don't need the label protectors as long as I completely dry the labels (and I have been doing this for some time now, with no problems with labels coming loose in the slightest). Then I use a microfiber cloth to get at the crud in the grooves. Finally, I dry and polish the record with a towel. This method only takes 5 or 6 minutes to do. It literally costs about 2 cents a record to clean, since the sponge will remain soapy enough for several records.
For those who would say, "this doesn't deep clean it like a Spin Clean (or another record cleaning system or machine) does", my answer is that it cleans it well enough for me. And that's what's ultimately important--that the record is cleaned and sounds satisfactory to the listener's ears.

Don't know about you but I am finding, very, very few good records in the thrift stores, but all kinds of great deals on CDs. I think people are ripping them and and getting rid of the hard copies. That's the beauty of of a cd and you don't have to deal with all this cleaning baloney.

I've had to buff and clean many CDs. I like to look for hard to find or popular PlayStation games, and it can require some work. I'm having your problem, too, with the vinyls being scratched. Most thrift stores will sell the album at full mint price with it looking horrible with the vinyl and cover.

The grooves are cleaned by the stylus and then the cloth i use will attract the microdust.

If you have a problem with static try "used fabric sheets". i swear by them. dont use new ones. i`d say run them through the dryer twice and your good to go. rub down your platter than rub them on your vinyl before using a Carbon Fiber Anti-Static Brush. its the best.

Good video, I'll have to keep the LCD cleaner in mind. I bet most of the record cleaning products are made with alcohol and distilled water. I say that because I have a Disc Washer 3 & 4 system, I think now they are called a Groove Washer, anyway, whenever I used it I would always note a familiar smell, I believe it's the alcohol. Of course they don't note the ingredients in their product, but that's my best guess. Note I had to look up Disc Washer, I don't know how reliable this is, but you can read about it here: www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php?/topic/16001-discwasher-d4-fluid-anybody-know-what-it-is/

I think you'd be better off using a brush too, to get into the grooves. Wiping the surface only does half the job.

I have did before and after sound clips on previous videos and was “rewarded” by youtube with copyright notices. I agree with you on using a brush. And usually when people are done cleaning records they have astatic leftover where she is obviously picked up through the stylist and it sounds like shit. So the lens cleaner works really good to get rid of that at the very least. And then I use my audioquest microfiber brush 15 bucks on Amazon and let me tell you it's amazing.

I think a lot of people probably use Window cleaning solutions to clean records. The main point being that they care enough for their records to keep them clean. It's amazing to see how many used records are sold with dirt, finger prints and mold. I would much rather buy a used record that was cleaned with Windex than one that is covered in dust or mold.

I use a formula of approximately 80% distilled water to almost 20% alcohol. The rest is two or three drops of a clear non scented detergent such as Dawn Free & Gentle and a drop or two of Jet Dry. I also recommend a gentle rinse of distilled water and vacuuming with a Vinyl Vac.

I think the LCD cleaner did the best job. It's a great easy way to clean records if you don't want to spend extra money on a cleaning machine. Lately, I have been using the Vinyl Vac and I recommend that product. I am NOT affiliated with the company and my recommendations are strictly my opinion. Also, I HIGHLY recommend using an Audio Quest Anti-Static record brush to gently brush every record before playing. This works great for new records. Thanks for the comment and the question. Just showing cheap cleaning options for folks that may not have a dedicated record cleaning system. Any cleaning is better than none at all! I have other videos showing more in depth cleaning with different cleaning chemicals and a vacuum system. I really recommend using a vacuum system if you can afford it. My options are mainly for people that may want to clean records in cheap D.I.Y. methods. I have posted videos with before and after audio samples but every one got slammed with copyright strikes so I don't post those comparisons anymore.
