I miss those days when I was a kid in the train led by ALCOs, sitting near the window seat enjoying the view and the smell of diesel smoke puffed by old ALCOs reaching the coaches behind, my mom used to hand me a kerchief saying not to smell the smoke but little did she know that smoke was like a deodorant for me, every time I smell that smoke I used to get goosebumps of how those powerful diesel engines in locos churn out power to haul tonnes of load. Love towards trains was in me, in my blood... I don't know. I used to get fascinated by them when I didn't even know what were they. And here I am today watching this video to relive those memories.
We used Alco railroad engines to power our air compressor. It was the world's largest dedicated air compressor 2000cfm at 2000psi. It was used to create air explosions under water for oil exploration. Ours had 1800hp and required an air turbine starter to spin it over.
@@bujecan It most certainly IS NOT! Alcos suffered from serious turbo-lag. That is why the Santa Fe got rid of their PA3s, They were always being fined by Calif's AQMD.

Alcos means the particular types of engines use in indian railways !! And the full form is "American locomotive company" And about pollution : See the over head wires !! This video is 5 year old !! May be electric loco is running now in these routes !! Indian railways 100% electrified its all routes till 2025 !!
I'm sure a lot of folks get hit by trains a lot out in that part of the world just looking how nonchalant they are of a incoming train blaring their horn and there proximity to the tracks
Most aof Alcos smoke, the engines have 4 stroke, the turbo is very lazy on low rpm engine, and of course, when apply throttle the air/fuel mixture ratio is poor (less than 15:1)and the ingnition is incomplete, For a better ignition more air may go to the cylinders, thiis happens at high rpm engine. Alcos smoke a little when go fast and the engine runs at high rpm.
As the gallery into the few believe ALCO and its subsidary MLW was still producing steam locomotives when the gallery into ALCO locomotives belching substancial smoke out the exhaust.
ALCOs had a pure turbo whereby when you open the throttle the injectors dump more fuel into the cylinders and the RPMs increase with the engine burning a very rich mixture until the RPMs kick the turbo up to where the boost gives enough air to even out the ratio.
When the turbo does not working properly than huge smoke comes out and consume much fuel at the time of initial acceleration and the locomotive starts chugging
nice locomotives that's run on the diesel engine but with time thing changes example gatiman express which has WAP 5 loco thats has 160 km/hr that's good but every one has his own place ****
Nearly every loco that we have (not ALCOs, maybe wdp3a) is capable of 160km/h, if not directly, then with a modified gear ratio. Certainly all EMDs, wap-5, wap-7/he can achieve 200km/h, and some beyond.
during notching up or acceleration there is this sudden burst of black smoke,it don't smoke all the way.every alco in India does the same.diesel engine
+John Moore It's because of "turbo lag" - when the throttle is increased, the engine is given more fuel. But to increase the power output, the engine needs more air as well. Thus, they have a turbocharger. However, the turbocharger takes time to spool up. While it's spooling up, it effectively starves the engine of air (only partially), causing it to smoke badly.
Why does the Indian Government allow these locomotives to pollute so much ? Why do not they service these machines ? How is the population ? From Brazil.
The smoke comes from an increase in throttle which adds more fuel to the cylinders. Too much fuel too little air. The smoke is incomplete combustion. The turbo is powered from exhaust gases and as the rpms increase the boost pressure rises and introduces more air into the cylinders making cleaner combustion and the smoke fades. This is why you only see it in throttle up changes. If it smokes all the time then there are other problems. Hope this helps.

Can’t beat old ALCOs! Fantastic video!
That black smoke looks so cool. But, in the back of my head I'm thinking: "That's fuel being waisted"
No thats the extra fuel 😀.the extra fuel produces that much smoke
Thats not extra fuel. Its worned out piston rings and the oil gets by. Oil makes black smoke
Its a combustion which we generally called as exaust gas

The proper amount of air makes it burn cleaner. Too much fuel and not enough air creates the smoke.
