    The essence of this video is not to encourage anyone from 150 to a super powerful crazy motorcycle (675R,ZX6R). This video will less applicable to people who just started riding. But there is a generation like mine, who started with Pulsar 150's and Unicron 150 because there wasn't anything else to start with. And we rode it ringing the nuts of that bike. Say more than 5 years or a lakh of km, and when you look out of it now, there are lot many options to upgrade. Simply what I meant by video is
    Upgrade from
    150 => R3, if you are tourer
    150 => N300 if you want to tour or to do track riding
    150 => Versys 300, when you are dreaming of a R1200GS
    150 => Ninja 650, if you have experience in riding big bikes by now and you feel you need a big tourer.
    After when you ride 150, that's not the only bike you ride. You switch the bikes and experience bigger bikes. Just wanted to tell a truth that, you don't have to follow the herd while buying bikes when you think you have done extra homework over the years.
    Well, that save some time and money. If you are someone who just started with a motorcycle, you have long way to go. Keep focusing on your kind of riding. Don't leave your bike at least for 5 years unless the bike leaves you.
    Good luck. Happy riding :)
    Big thanks to all those how are expressing your thoughts in the comment. I appreciate it :)

      Can you suggest me a bike. I am a beginner, but knows and rides the bikes in my home. Is CBR 250R a beginner friendly bike. I think in only Higher rpm CBR gets aggressive. Now I am using dio and a 100cc bike. I love sports bike type than naked bikes. Which bike should I take? Is there any other suggestions?

    Personally I feel you should keep your 150cc along with the bigger bike because there will be people waiting to steal expensive bikes parked on the streets. So you should use the 150cc for daily use and the bigger cc bike for touring.

    I am gonna be honest, I don't agree with you. Its an expensive thing motorcycling, buying is not the real challenge... running and maintaining is the real challenge. Just for a dream yes I can buy a 650 but it wd be a sitting duck as i know i can't afford the touring expense(mileage) and maintenance. So IMO that would be a waste of the motorcycle's ability as well. Do i find my CBR 250 underpowered nowadays? yes i do. But it still has enough poke to tour economically. But yes, say someone who has the financial stability to buy and maintain but still buying a smaller bike, then after two years getting frustrated, for such people its better to go for a bigger bike right now . It all boils down to money(aukaat) and how you intend to use your motorcycle and whether you are capable to maintain it with that usage. PS:- Aukaat doesn't mean anything derogatory here! :)

    I come from a really poor family. When I was in college, My dream bike of that time was the 2017 Apache 160 4v. I was so excited when my father promised to get me one. But my dreams were crushed and I got back to reality. After that I started doing some part time work and saved some money. I bought a 2008 Pulsar 150 UG3 for 26k in 2018. I Still ride it to this day and the bike never even once shut on me. Almost all the electronics are now gone so I don't even know how many kilometers have been covered on odo. But man.. I've done all ghats surrounding Pune, all highways going to the nearby cities. Had so many dates on the backseat :P. All those night drives haha. I still daily it 52 kms. And this one is still a beast. It still makes me so happy when I see it after a wash. Although my financial condition has not improved that much, I was planning to go for an r15 after this but F it, I'll keep my dream alive of buying the Ninja 300 and keep riding my current beast.
    This was a nice video Strell. Thank you this.

    Whats the point of advising not to upgrade to a duke390 but to go for an R3? Both are almost equally powerful ... refinement is the only thing that the multi cylinders have an edge on.
    I dont agree with your advice. Because someone who rides a 14bhp pulsar150 may not be able to handle the 60bhp ninja 650.
    Its good to use 300cc bikes for an year or 2 and then go for 650,instead of going directly to the 650 and ending up crashing.
    When my friends who ride 150cc bikes take my 390 for a spin ,they do complain that the power is too much for them to handle ... so definitely 650 will be an overkill for them
    And its not just about the power and gruntof the bikes . Maintainance is a big chapter .
    150cc bikes are relatively less prone to wear and tear. If someone is used to changing the brakepads after 10k on his 150cc would not realize he has to do it every 4 to 5k on a 650 ... and thereare many other maintenance topics that one has to learn. Most 150cc bikes dont have liquid cooling .
    So if they upgrade to a 300cc they would learn maintanance a little more and even if they screwup something 300cc spares are relatively cheaper than 650cc.
    And finally it all depends on the riders skills and ability to learn. We cannot generalize the upgrade cycle

    • @iamstrell
      @iamstrell  6 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      Thanks for your comment with honest opinions. I like it :)
      Its true that a Pulsar 150 guy can't handle a 650 (considering him to be a tourer and touring on that for long > 50k kms). I guess, if he has that interest in touring, he will be tasting the 390's and 650's slowly over his touring with his friends. What I meant is that, one shouldn't just see this video and commit for a powerful motorcycle he hasn't even ridden. We make a purchase decision when we are convinced. But what I see now is that people who like Ninja 650, enter to an intermediate segment of Dominar and Duke, and tries to modify that. After a year or two, they will be fed up with the comfort and hop on to the Ninja. I was just telling that those 2 years of time and money could have been saved. Hoping to see your reply :)

    • @nischals510
      @nischals510 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Strell ,ok i do get your point after reading this comment ... but in the video it was difficult to understand that point. But as i said even the maintenance part should be considered because there is a world of difference between maintenance of 150 and 650 ... but if they upgrade to a 300 ... it will be easier to get used to the maintenance evn if he owns it for 1 or 2 years , and even if they make mistakes it would be lighter on the pocket.

      Strell Actually bro a proper Bike rider or even the ones who race always 1st started off slowly from a 150-200cc to a 300-400 and then slowly upgraded because the person needs to know how to handle that immense power in a litre class bike.

    Not everyone who wants to upgrade needs a powerful bike. I did the same mistake when I bought 390duke from my StunnerCBF. I bought it as second bike and had plans to sell Stunner later. Sounded perfect. But after the honeymoon was over, the duke spent most of the days under cover, as I prefered Stunner for commutes. After 2 years of love-hate relationship, ended up selling the duke. Now I'm again planning to upgrade, but this time, to something practical.

    I have been debating an upgrade since a really looong time. And some really great points have been mentioned by others. I would like to share my thought process -
    Have been riding a Yamaha FZ V2 since 4 years. I believe it is the best bike in the 150cc segment. And it is like a mini naked/street. Which is why the Dominar (sports tourer cum street) does not excite me at all (even though its a good product with a great price).
    I am a tourer with occasional offroading and even contemplated going for an ADV. But wanted something that could also put a smile to my face whenever I wanted.
    I also think the 250-400cc is the best category for India as our roads really dont allow us to go any faster or go any more crazy over twisties/ghats. So, I dont really see the point of going for a 500cc+ bike. Hence, with this assumption, I believe I would be sticking to a bike in this segment for about 4-5 yrs or even more.
    Which is why the decision becomes even more difficult.
    So lets take a look at the list -
    Duke 390 - Awesome tech. Great features. Crazy fast. But I personally am looking at something outside of the street bike category. However, its a very well rounded bike with loads of features, and there does not seem to be any other such bike. My mind tells me it is VFM.
    RC390 - Too track oriented.
    RR 310 - Love it. But vibrations, very small pillion seat and lack of slipper clutch makes me think again. Hoping to see a V2 of this bike soon.
    N300 - With the new pricing, its become really attractive. Solid bike with a parallel twin. But servicing and spare part availability is a big issue.
    N400 - Too expensive and servicing and spare parts issue.
    R3 - Solid bike with a twin but price is on the higher side. For the 2019 edition, I would be willing to save for a couple of years and go for it. I do not have any idea on spare parts and servicing.
    RE Interceptor - Not sure about the long term reliability of a RE. Plus, while I love the cafe racer feel, I would prefer a sports or street bike.
    Honda CB 250rr - not coming to India but seems to have everything in it.
    I look forward to comments from others.

    Been riding an activa for 4 years and clocked 32k+ km. Thinking of buying a 150 cc bike as I'm new to bikes. Will clock some 60k km on my new bike in a span of 3 years and will move to a touring bike like the new himalayan 452. I don't think Indian highways are good enough to tackle 130 kmph + speeds. Don't get me wrong. The quality of roads are very good but the traffic isn't organised yet even in 2023. So I don't think we need something more than 40-50 bhp bikes.

    Learnt riding from dad's Bajaj Boxer, and rode it, starting with under supervision, from 2008 to 2017; now currently have Apache RTR 180 ABS as my own first bike from my own earned job money; have plans for upgrading within next 2 years; first had the plan of upgrading through 200->400->600->800->1000cc, now-a-days had my thoughts why waste 80% of the money on a 400 when the 100% can bring me a 600cc segment, just watched your video and it also approved of the same. Sports Tourer is the choice of the class for me too, comfortable yet sleek with fairings. The price stress hit me when I saw the price difference between the Ninja400 and the Ninja650. So right now, I am targetting towards the Ninja650, if and only if, unless a better 600cc segment is launched within these 2 years. Thanks again. Cheers.

    Ardent follower of your channel. This video is for people like me, who is looking constantly to upgrade from my pulsar 150(2005 model), which I rode for more than 1 lac kms. CB 300r was the one that I almost got it, but after your reviews and test ride, I changed my mind, mainy due to 1)tank capacity and 2)extra small pillion seat. My taste and requirements matches yours especially because, I too love and tour often but most of the time ride in the city.

    Awesome Video..
    The way u explained is precisly acceptable and admirably delectable...
    U spoke the truth of switching motorcycles.. Yea i too agree that upgrade is a must but after fully njoying the ice cream... Atleast one shud ride a bike for about 4-5 yrs then think for an upgrade.
    I bought P220 in 2010 and in 2019 i upgraded to R15 V3..
    Many people say this z nt an upgrade but ...
    The way the v3 makes u feel at higher speeds , 220 failed...
    And v3 came with much more technical advancements.. basically its the CC but the refinement in the engine u njoy while riding..

    Got to know that I am a tourer with my first bike Discover 125 ST. After test riding almost every motorcycle between 200cc to 400cc, booked the Black R3 last month. Man, exactly same thought process. I'm going to keep my discover too and I am planning to keep the R3 at least for the next 5 years. While we can always rent the bigger bikes as the rental market is evolving very fast. But my personal opinion, I don't think you can comfortably ride a 400cc+ motorcycle in city.

  • @MR.MotoHead
    @MR.MotoHead 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    That is the same reason why I bought CBR 250R as my first bike. Everyone suggested me to buy a 150 cc motorcycle as a beginner and then later upgrade to a bigger machine. But still as a rookie with no riding experience I still went for the CBR and now I am riding it pretty easily. At first it was pretty heavy for me and also the power was too much. But then slowly I learned to ride on my own. No one taught me. And now I am pretty sure what to do when I am on my bike and also in panic situations. So I believe its basically a myth that people should start with a 100cc or max 150cc bikes. If you have the confidence that you can learn to ride on a fairly big motorcycle and can tackle it, then just go for it. Before buying a 150 cc bike I thought that for now I will be able to enjoy it but after sometime when I will be hungry for more power then I will regret for buying a 150 cc. So I decided to go for a 250 instead and hopefully I will be able to enjoy it for at least 3 to 4 years to come. I just bought the 2018 CBR 250R two and a half months back. And now I have no problem riding the bike. I initially thought of going for Apache RR310 but discarded because of pillion seat.

      Well I took those suggestions and I am stuck with gixxer sf. My bike is in excellent condition. I mostly use my bike when I have to go out of my town and it's severely underpowered. Travelling on it is a pain and I don't want to sell my motorcycle. I learned riding on my father's splendor+ when I was a child. Since I had no disc brake or speed experience. I took my friend's suggestions concerning mileage, maintainance costs etc.. and bought a 150. At least for me those were the most trivial issues, unless I buy a white elephant of a motorcycle. I still regret that I should have gone with a 250 instead of a 150. I got used to the 150 very quickly and even a 250 feels okay to me. My next upgrade will be a twin cylinder maybe n650 If I can manage or an r3.

    Hi Strell. I would like to share my point of view. If a person jumps onto bigger bike from 150, there are high chances of him/her getting quite an initial shock of the hugh price difference in service and maintenance costs. It will almost be a nightmare or pain in the ass for that person to get used to such hefty bills. Just buying a bike is not nearly as important as maintaining one, in my opinion. Also the bigger the bike, the greater care and respect it needs, which a person coming from 150 segment won't realise until something really gets screwed up. I'm not discouraging ur point (there are exceptions always), but personally I think a smooth learning curve gives u better understanding of what u r actually riding and owning.
    Let me know what you think about this.

  • @MikBan
    @MikBan 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Honestly that is my situation right now. I rode my Stunner for 3 years and done 40k kms, then bought Gixxer sf and I have completed 45k kms and counting.. This bike is in such good condition that I can do 1.5 lac kms easily and extract the full value of it. But I feel that I grew out of it. Its very punchy and still is a hoot to ride but I wish Suzuki offered a 45 hp after this. So I called the yamahas to know the pricing and schemes of R3 because I can't take anything less than 40 hp or I will grow out of that too. R3 is the best bike to go as my riding is mostly in the cities and includes some touring. But it is pricy. I am thinking about waiting for it. Your video just reassured my view. Thanks.

    Hi I have been in the same dilemma for the past 6 months as I was thinking to upgrade my motorcycle. So help me out here. I am a 17 years experienced motorcyclist. My journey had different kinds of motorcycles in it. I started from the best beginner friendly and technically not a motorcycle the Bajaj M80 and I rode it for a year after that I switched to Hero Honda CD 100 almost for a 1 to 1.2 years and then Glamour, CBZ Xtreme, Pulsar 150 (riding this for past 12 years) which I still ride and Pulsar 180 (3 years). I could say I have clocked more than 1 lakh kilometers and my daily run is 100 kilometers approx., to be precise 96. The whole route consists of busy traffic, highways and a little bit of offroad too if there is a lot of traffic and I have to cut through it via rough side roads. I have been thinking to upgrade to a Duke 200 or a 250cc motorcycle or maybe more, what do you think will be ideal upgrade. Please suggest thanks.

    I am in the same dilemma. My heart beats with Dominar 400 for Power and then my mind says Avenger for comfort. I can't afford two motorcycles one for city commute and one for highway rides. Hence I want to choose between Dominar and avenger one will munch highways and other will be supremely comfortable for long rides on highways.

  • @vinaygowda_n
    @vinaygowda_n 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    From my experience a good 150 cc bike is more than enough for daily commute ( city riding on Indian roads), less maintenance and easy on pocket.I agree for highway and touring you need some extra power . Nowadays most of the bikers has that upgrade think and end up with value segment bikes ( Dominar , Duke series , RE twins ) but few will end up with some premium segment like ninjas series , R3 , CBR 650 , Benelli.
    The value bikes won't burn your pocket like premium ones and can have some fun but at the same time you will miss the feel which premium segment offers. Ultimately you will get what you pay. If you are tight on budget and planning to cover lot of distance , this segment is the best as it won't cost bomb for maintenance.
    The premium bikes maintenance is damn expensive , eg for every 6k you need to change brake pads which costs a lot and for every 15 k you need to change tyres which again costs heavy and again around 20 k you need to change chain sporcket. if you are mile muncher then it's very difficult to maintain for an middle class guy. For a upper middle class where they don't consider the cost factor for them it's fine.
    My Sincere advise for the bikers who are in the process of upgrade kindly see the purpose of riding , take your time to shortlist, consider the cons, most importantly maintenance and engine heat dissipation in city riding and then finalize.

    In this video you were talking about upgrading from a 150-200cc bikes to a middle weight bikes (500-750 cc). In my opinion, a direct upgrade to middle weight for the 150-200cc bikes is a bit dangerous, because the power delivery, riding dynamics etc., are very different in both these segments. What I believe is that, upgrading is a process as upgrading the levels in schools, it isn’t possible for a fourth standard student to be upgraded to eight standard, without attending the classes in between, the problems to be faced this case are also similar. When you are upgrading anything, not only bikes, look for the immediate next level, otherwise it can ruin your life. This is what I believe. Sorry to say, I can’t agree with what you told in this video, please don’t take it wrong, you are doing a great job, keep it up. Cheers 👍🏻

    I own a dominar now. I have upgraded from a FZ16 which was modded to max and i feel i like i love to ride the fz more in city and the dominar on highways. i don't feel i need any upgrade further (unless KTM launches the 790 duke just for the way it sounds) as dominar satisfies me the torque & speed that i need and my fz gives me that peppy fun to ride feel. I don't think we have safe roads to ride litre class bikes. .
