  • This 1967 L88 Corvette, Serial No. 21550, has an unquestionable pedigree as the best-documented example of its kind in the world.
    Documented with the original tank sticker, window sticker, order form, shipper copy, dealer invoice, factory inspection form, factory ID card, vintage photos, complete ownership history and a remarkable racing career, there is no other 1967 L88 Corvette with equally extensive or impressive documentation.
    This car is also the only 1967 L88 Corvette to retain its complete original engine, consisting of the original engine block, heads, crankshaft, rods, pistons, lifters and valve train.
    This car stands as the most successful L88 Corvette race car of all time during its eight-year racing career with its original owner. At the Daytona 24 Hour Endurance race of 1970, Cliff Gottlob’s privateer racing team stunned the field by finishing second in GT Class and 11th overall.
    Furthermore, L88 21550 was piloted to nearly 300 podium finishes, including more than 150 outright wins, and during that time, it took home a record-setting 52 consecutive victories.

    I worked for Cliff starting just after the 1970 Daytona race for several years. Had the honor of working, driving, and loving that car. The history and stories around that car are beyond any other Corvette or race car. I'm excited to see what the car brings at auction. Congrats to the new owner to be, they'll have THE gem in Corvette history.

    I remember back in the 80’s David and myself reassembling the Corvette after paint in David’s garage. We were a week out from the unveiling at Bloomington Gold when David noticed the hood stripe wasn’t correct. On the spot I reshot the blue and corrected the layout. Also during the assembly of the roll bar David ask me to cut out the deck lid so the panel would close around the roll bar. He said I want the cut outs to look like someone did it last minute at the race track. So I took a hacksaw blade and started cutting, it’s all I could do not to make the cuts look perfect as David requested. Fun times!

    I was at Laguna Seca in the early 90's and this car pulled off the track where I was watching from. Turns out that the driver, Jim Krughoff was the owner (with David) at the time and I knew him from our mutual enthusiasm in collecting antique gambling machines. I had no idea he was into cars as well. We talked about another L88 that he had sold some time before that was a coupe with 12 miles on the body that had been separated from the engine that was used in a race boat. He managed to find the boat and engine and put them back together. I don't know when that occurred. He sold it for what he thought was huge money so he couldn't pass it up...I believe it was $600,000.

    I am a Corvette owner since 1976. O have known about this very car since 1979. I wrote a college paper for a journalism class about this car while at Penn State. I forget my grade, it has been 40 years. Incredible story. They literally picked this car up at St Louis and drove through sub zero temperatures with no heat and had to find 103 octane gas to run thus monster. These engines had no choke and burned gas at an incredible rate. I predict $5 million will be the hammer price.

    Awesome Corvette, the Best of the Best. Quick look at the window sticker, this sold new for $5765.30, not even a Down Payment today. Amazing it survived, someone with very deep pockets will get this to park in their garage, never to see a race track again!

    The 427 engine exhaust sound is completely different than any other. Can't be duplicated.

    There is a single down vote. Has to be a modern day tuner jealous to the max. Lots and lots of tuners out there, only one Ultimate L88.
