  • Episode twelve of Unsung Heroes, a series on HSG featuring some of the obscure cars from both the concept and mass production world which simply do not get the recognition which they deserve.
In this episode we take a look at a truly monstrous racing Corvette which was intended to dominate at Daytona, Sebring and La Sarthe...

One of it’s tricks no other Corvette team of the era picked up on was it’s channel job. In Essence from the base of the windshield to the tip of the nose Where the air dam started it straight down decent it was channeled 4” lower on the frame than the other Vette teams. This allowed for a much smaller frontal area with normal suspension travel with much higher top speeds. The other teams who attempted the same ride height in the front had to virtually eliminate front suspension travel which negatively effected handling. Whereas the Greenwood car had more normal suspension travel, somewhere in the neighborhood of 4”. Those Brothers knew their stuff.

It’s biggest weakness was it’s transmission. It did hit 236 mph on the Daytona tri-oval track.

As a C3 owner I always loved the John Greenwood Vettes. John carried the torch for the fastest production based Corvettes. I watched John race a couple races at Laguna Seca and he was very competative with the Porsche 935s.

Yes! I saw one 6:11 at an early 80s riverside 6 hour Enduro, and the fastest cars down the long straight were the 935s and the greenwood corvette!

The blown tyre ripped the fuel cell, which spelt the end to the effort. So yes, in a way, you could say the tyre blow out killed it.

I saw the Spirit of 76 run at Sebring '76. It shook the ground when it passed. There were a couple of customer cars running as well but Greenwood was in front. From what I remember after 4 hours or so, perhaps sooner, it broke and they were out. Oh well !

Henri Greder always had pretty reliable Corvettes in Le Mans. The yellow one is prominent in almost all the contemporary footage. Just seven litres though.

An awesome beautiful monster! =) paint is absolutely wonderful :) the car was so fast that it had big problems with brakes, especialy in Mulsanne ^^
The look of the vette from 70's to 82 is really my favorite of all other. =)

This is funny. The first thing you see is my big butt... This is 2012 when we took the car to Goodwood then the following weekend the Le Mans Classic. Car wouldn't run right at Goodwood. So many people took a crack at tuning the Lucas pump and Kinsler injection. Then Jesse James , who was pitted a few cars down, comes over and says, "can I try?" Twenty minutes later he had the Greenwood running perfectly.

Mancuso may have been paid 50K but he did not make it to Le Mans. His father was uncomfortable with his son running the race. There is in car on my channel of The Spirt of Le Mans 76 running at Goodwood.

Here's a suggestion. The 1980 Elfin MR9 F5000 - the only ground-effects F5000 car ever built, and built by a small Australian manufacturer rather than one of the larger British manufacturers. Unfortunately for the MR9, F5000 was on its last legs by 1980, so the MR9 never got to show its full potential.

i currently own a 2014 Corvette, the body panels unbolt unlike this 1974 Corvette which they were glued on. I have always admired Greenwood and his work. I wonder how hard would it be to convert my 2014 into a Look alike Tribute to the old Spirit of LeMans with bolt on fenders, doors, front and rear fascia?

Say it with me. . .
There is no replacement for displacement.
The only substitute for cubic inches is cubic money.
If some is good and more is better, then too much is just enough.
    God bless America!
