Tony Northrup brings you the latest photo news: Leaked specs & pictures of the new Panasonic S9! This compact, full-frame 24 megapixel mirrorless L-mount camera is entirely unique. It's small, beautiful, and available in multiple colors. It has a flip screen for creators & TH-camrs and it's only $1,500!
However, it does have some drawbacks. It lacks a viewfinder, so you have to use the rear screen for everything. It's also so small and flat that it's probably going to be difficult to balance bigger L-mount lenses. Fortunately, Sigma has a bunch of smaller L-mount lenses that will look and function great.

I have an S5II and I don't plan on getting an S9, and while I rarely use the EVF on the S5II, I do use it at times. I find the screen on Panasonic cameras can have too much reflections and even at the brightest setting on the S5II, I found the screen can be a little hard to see due to reflections at certain angles in bright lighting conditions and in those conditions I find the EVF very useful.
The attachment grip doesn't look deep enough to really be useful. I am wondering about the no mechanical shutter with the readout speed of the sensor.
I have never had an issue with Panasonic cameras menu systems once I learned where the settings are. Then again, since 2006 I have used a GH4, GH5, GH6 and S5II so I am well used to Panasonic cameras menu systems and I know where all the settings are and use My Menu for all the settings I use the most often.
Not everyone needs wide aperture lenses all the time, so the 26mm being f/8 really isn't a big deal, especially at that price point. I often shoot at f/8-f/11 for landscapes and street photography and videos and never had an issue doing that. Plus besides the Sigma contemporary lenses, there are the Panasonic f/1.8 primes from 18 to 85mm which are not big and they are all the exact same size if you want wider aperture prime lenses.

Lumix menues are great. Not perfect but easy to customise and pretty well thought out. I think this is more of a case that you don't use Lumix cameras too often. I may be projecting here but I do get the sense that you don't take Lumix very seriously for some reason. Which is fine, I've still followed both of you for years and will do for many more years to come I imagine.

Hey Tony, I’m very interested… one of my all time favourite cameras is the Lumix LX100. Currently using a Nikon Z30 as my casual walk around point and shoot camera - it’s light, ergonomics are brilliant and the images are beautiful. It’s more fun to use than my iPhone, and you get to shoot images in a way that people ignore… as soon as you put a camera up to your eye now, you stand out. Has the S5/but got rid of it because it was tooooo big!

Good point on the EVF on this one Tony.
But to all the other demands, I think LUMIX has a right to do whatever they want to do just like you do not need to buy it. LUMIX is moving ahead pretty fast to stay ahead or inline with the competition yet we shooters can’t stop complaining 😂

I've got a S5 and many lenses for usual photography. I also have a X100F to have one camera in my pocket even when walking the dog. If I can get a full frame L mount camera like S9 and add a 35mm f2 from Sigma, I'll be happy.

  • @backdrifter49
    @backdrifter49 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

I can live without an EVF if it's not my primary camera, but the allegedly short 4k recording time and lack of mechanical shutter would be dealbreakers. This has the potential to be a stylish, compact second body for travel/backup/EDC for an existing L-mount user, but I don't think we are Panasonic's target market for this camera. I guess we will see in a few days if the rumors are correct or not.

Interesting take on the menu system, as I (and many others) think Lumix has by far the best menu system in the business (and I shot film before you were born, well before the concept of a camera menu existed and there was no auto-anything!).
Re the S9, no EVF, no sale. It's also a shame that so few people learn with a proper camera anymore--phones are a compromise at best (plus the term "creator" isn't appropriate to describe those who produce the ubiquitous, mediocre "content" seen in recent years, basically since the advent of "smart" phones--and don't get me started on "influencers"--ugh).
Also, mechanical shutters will soon become a thing of the past (I rarely use them), especially once global shutters become common. Re IBIS, that requires physical space within the body, so it will be limited compared to what can be achieved with "conventional" bodies (such as the S5--the G9M2 has even better IBIS due to the smaller sensor in essentially the same body).
Oh, and excessive background blur is way overrated (and ever more overused). Oh, and "FF" is overkill--long live MFT!!!

I have used Panasonic cameras since I got a GH4 in 2006. I had a GH4, GH5, GH6 and now use an S5II. The menu layout has stayed more or less the same in each camera, just a few settings have been added/changed and I find it easy enough to navigate once you know where different settings are. While it may seem like there is a lot of settings, once you know where they are, it is easy enough to find them. There is also a My Menu where you can add settings you use the most often and its quick to access if you don't want to spend time searching for certain settings.

Pretty much done with Panasonic. Loved the compact M43, and although I sold my of my M43 gear, I still have a GX9 with a 14-140 lens for lightweight travel, but Panasonic abandoned that product line. The full size Panasonic equipment is both very large, and no better than anything from Canon, Nikon or Sony. I have moved over to Sony with mostly APS-C (A 6600 & A6700 with a full range of lenses), but recently bought an A7CR and a pair of lenses to play with. The full frame Sony body is very compact, but the lenses not so much compared to APS-C or M43.

Right now, the Lumix stabilization is as far ahead of everything else like the AF was behind until they got PDAF. This stabilization, especially the e-stabilization for Video is the most important feature in the new cameras (S5-II, G9-II and now S9). I personally need the viewfinder, I don't like the recording limit and I think the price is to close to the S5-II. I'm not sure if it will find it's market.
The 26mm lens looks like a show piece they made just for the looks. They needed a small lens that make the camera look like they want it to look. It is made for the pictures of the camera not with the camera.

I would not buy a camera without a viewfinder. I have six cameras, including the Lumix DC-GX9. This will take approx. 260 photos with a fully charged battery. However, if you switch to economy mode (not using the rear screen) you can get up to 900 exposures. It is unlikely that this would be possible with the new Lumix camera Tony is talking about. Regarding menus, I have used all brands of camera (except Pentax) and I found the Panasonic menus a revelation. Everything is clear and precise. I also foud that the menus on Sony and Fuji cameras left a lot to be desired. Olympus menus are the most convoluted and it takes time to wade through them. But Tony is correct when he says he would not recommend the f8.0 lens. A lens with a maximum aperture of f8.0 is probably not going to be much use in poor light or at night time. Even though I would not buy the camera, the red version looks good!

Compare to all those options there it seems to be a better overall camera deal and with better basic, cheap and small but very good Lens ecosystem primes for beginners. Like: the Canon RF IS: 24mm & 35mm f/1.8, and the 85mm f/2 (Stabilized) , or the 50mm f/1.8. All affordable, light and small lenses, pair with a potent fullframe camera that only overheat at 4k 60p (15') for about $1,200. I would definitely go for the Canon Eos R8, personally!!

No EVF might be a big dealbreaker for many, and those who already shoot without EVF might already own a Ricoh and not be in the market for a switch. I think especially the combination might make it unattractive too many people: No EVF, possibly no shutter, interchangeable lenses but in a stripped down body that can be mostly seen in fixed lens bodies...)
