  • After being stranded on the side of the road two weeks ago, we literally dropped a distributor in and timed it by ear. The car seemed to run and drive good. How close to optimal timing where we? Does it really make much of a difference? Watch and find out!

Hey there! I was super happy with the way it sounds! Especially for a basically stock car! So glad I finally got the timing on track too!

Hi Rick, I'm so glad I finally checked it. I guess I didn't check it sooner because I didn't think it was out by much. Lesson learned! Lol

Hey VRM! Get your new water pump installed yet? I can't wait to hear you fire your car up! I imagine there are a ton of cars running around out there with the timing out to lunch. Pretty much free HP sitting on the sidelines.

@@306foxbody1 I've been on vacation, should have been delivered while I'm away so we should have the pump installed shortly upon getting back home!

Good video. One thing to keep in mind once the stock balancer gets the death wobble it's impossible to get the cars timing right. It will slip out of time like my 88 lx 5.0 did. Only fix was to replace the balancer with a new sfi balancer. Car runs like a top now!

Hey there! Definitely worth mentioning inspecting balancers. And for the price, a replacement really isn't expensive, and is cheap insurance. Thanks for bringing that to our attention!👍👍

Excellent video and explanation of how to set the timing! I recently had to adjust the timing on the Rustic Fox. I am going to save this video as a reference! BTW your Fox is looking awesome and sound great!!

Thanks so much brother! I was actually surprised how much I had the timing out considering how well the car drove. What a difference!!!👍👍

Wrong timing is one of the top problems that cars have when they come to the dyno. 10 degrees BTC with the SPOUT removed is the factory setting, and will deliver 26* total at WOT. A typical bump, especially when used with 91 octane gasoline is 14* initial which will give you 30* total on one of these cars. If you replace that remote TFI module on the road, try to get it in the heat sink. You might get it running just by plugging it in, but they get REALLY hot and need that heat sink to survive.

Thanks so much Matthew for providing accurate timing numbers! I am currently running just regular fuel, so I didn't want to get too aggressive. Totally agree about the heat sink on the tfi. It's amazing how hot those things can get! Thanks so much for watching and commenting! I always enjoy your channel and totally admire your attention to details!!! 👍👍

@@306foxbody1 My stock 93 project pinged at 30* total on 87 octane. I bet the inside of that engine is heavily carboned up which doesn't help, but if you are running 87 it probably pays to keep the timing closer to stock. Best power will be around 30 or 32 total with the iron heads if you have the right fuel.
