    In Italy, the lack of a coalition government means there could be an unprecedented second general election in the same year. Whoever ends up leading the country will have to contend with the deep North-South divide. Southern Italy is poorer and unemployment there far higher. Meanwhile, mafia extortion costs the economy billions of euros per year. This is in stark contrast with the North, the country's economic powerhouse, where luxury businesses are thriving. Our correspondents report.

When the allies decided to attack Sicily they found out the island was well defended and to manage to disembark without having to engage the Italian forces, they collaborated with the mafia promising all the leaders of the various organizations freedom in exange of a place to land. Magically, when the war ended, all the mafia leaders were freed and Italy, beating at first a very weak democracy, didn’t manage to re-eradicate them in time

      @@martinsonnenschein9029 It is the Lombards who can tell if independence makes sense or not. Lombardy earns nothing from the south, on the contrary it maintains half of Italy with its money. In 2017 lombardy won the referendum on fiscal autonomy with 90% of votes in favor and still nothing has been seen. Moreover, due to immigration, the Lombard culture was severely damaged. The south lives by clinging to what the north leaves it, it functions like a leech that takes without giving anything back.

      So man. Have you ever visited sicily for say that it is like the third world? I think not. Second thing, you say that nord pay for all states... Man are you kidding me?? The north italy is richer than south, it's true, but north don't pay so much man. If you will study more, you would know that the products of northern Italy are sold to the south 3 times as much (related to the price) compared to exports that the north does with European countries. so friend, knowing these data, are you still sure that the south is the one that steals the north? actually i’m from *CENTER* (yes it exist) Italy and i want to explain things a little bit to foreigners... italy is actually divided in three not in two as a common belief:
    - *the north:* rich and industrialized part, clean where people are acculturated and they respect rules (northern italians share similarities with france or northern europe actually, in fact there is also a colder weather and the italian alps in border with austria and france and switzerland, the mentality is very similar and the richness in general) and the most two iconic cities are Milan (the most industrialized and rich city in Italy) and Venice, Turin, Genoa, Bologna
    - *the center:* not too different from the north in terms of richness and development and culture, but less industrialized and less organized and the people are more welcoming and warm and chatty, iconic cities like Rome (capital) and Florence are in the center, but also Sardinia. Us from the center are very neutral about this diaspora between north and south and i think we are the true italians here... also because we didn’t have many invasions by foreign civilizations during history because the center italy has always been under the Papal State (Vatican) for a lot, and still is, so it remained latin (roman, as romans were originated by latins and spoke latin)
    - *the south:* the most poor and undeveloped part, where mafia rules the most (and also where mafia is born) and that’s why many southern italians emigrate. You don’t see many emigration coming from center/north italians, and i explained why, and i have to add that it’s also the part where (sorry but it’s my opinion) the strongest dialects come from basically people in my opinion don’t put the effort to talk in standard italian and they prefer to use their dialects (the ones popular in mafia families for americans basically SUPERMARIO LOL) but again their dialects are too strong honestly... italian is a romance language, melodic and sweet is the language of music, opera...so it really sucks that there is (especially in USA) this stereotype that italians talk like supermario or like mafia bosses. This is true for the southern italians as i explained, in the center/north people talk standard italian and less dialects with a proper accent. If you hear standard italian is completely different from the dialects spoken in south of italy especially, and southern italians in general even when they talk standard italian they have (sorry) really strong accents😂But also i think the south is the most gorgeous and iconic part of Italy (Amalfi coast, Capri, Naples, Sicily, Positano, ecc)
    Us from the center as i said want truly a united Italy, but Italy is veeeery divided not only from north to center to south but also from region to region! The fact is that Italy unified very late on the contrary of other european countries, in 1861, and before it was divided in different regions who talked different dialects and had different cultures basically... a BIG MESS! Italy is my home, a gorgeous country full of history and culture and art, marvelous places, food and warm people.. so we have to unite from north to south! 🇮🇹🕊

    Quick explanation for anybody who’s not Italian, the north and the south of Italy are 2 completely different countries, different gdp different culture different way of living different traditions and different behaviour (talking about averages ofc). North of Italy is the backspine of the county’s economy, it carries the whole nation (especially the regions of Lombardia, Piemonte and Veneto, where the gdp and the gdp pro capita is higher and it’s comparable to those of northern eu countries). The south on the other hand is the least industrialized and developed half, who’s mostly known for tourism and for the internationalized stereotypes of the average italian (see “pizza, pasta, mandolino, mafia” and so on). All of these stereotypes originated from southern Italians, the northern counterpart has little to nothing to do with them.

    The history of Italy points to regional governments, cultures, language and prosperity. The unification of Italy brought out these differences. Some historians feel that it was imposed and is still fragile. Those in the South migrated largely to North America seeking to get away from their threadbare existence. Today more just move to the North. Sadly the mafia has carved out the South. Empty old towns testify to this cancer. But media movement and education have smoothed the younger generation ‘s sense of difference, language, and formed a common national culture into points of regional pride. This greater Italian spirit now spans the globe and continues to keep Italy in the Pantheon of great European nation states.

    The funny thing about Italy is that at the time of Re-unification the “Kingdom of the Two Sicilies” was the richest and most advanced nation on the Italian peninsula. The South had the first railway in Italy (1839), the first steamship (1818), the first telegraph and the streets of Naples were gas lit in 1836. What is said about the South today was said about the North in the past. So what went wrong? Probably the Re-unification of Italy resulted in the new country’s focusing all its efforts on building a new nation with a new capital in Rome. Money and resources moved North and the southern part of Italy never recovered.

    • @SuPlanu4Ever
      @SuPlanu4Ever 4 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      This is a common misunderstanding, it wasn't actually like that, this is an excuse used by southern italians to justify their lack of civic sense. Actually the south was as rich as the Kingdom of Sardinia in the north but had a mostly agricultural economy whilst the north was much more industrialized. When the industrial revolution came through the north got richer and the south lagged behind, then mafia was born and it only got things worse. Also it is a flat out lie that the government invests more money in the north, actually it is the exact opposite 😂 through the decades various funds for the riqualifications of the south were established and most of the European Union money goes there. The problem is that mafia always has its hand in public finances and always takes a big chunk of it. The widespred lack of civic sense by the southern people only makes things worse because there's never enough taxes' income for the local administrators (which are also corrupted or controlled by the mafia itself) to promote economic growth

    • @johncorkery4924
      @johncorkery4924 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Turabolin Jon Jones Somehow, at the time of unification, those Neapolitan agriculturalists possessed the largest steel works in Italy, the largest shipyards, the first telegraph in Italy, the first railway and were ranked as the third country in the world for industrial development at the 1856 Paris International Exhibition. Financially the kingdom possessed gold reserves (443 million gold lire) 5x those of its nearest competitor in Italy, the Papal States. Piedmont-Sardinia had gold reserves of only 27 million gold lire and they were also deeply in debt. Unification was forced on the South when Garibaldi invaded in 1860 and annexed the Kingdom to Sardinia. More likely the unification required the gold of the Two Sicilies to finance the project.

    • @johncorkery4924
      @johncorkery4924 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Stefano R The South didn’t passively accept it. They were invaded by Garibaldi with Piedmontese-Sardinian troops and annexed to the Kingdom of Sardinia. In the occupation and aftermath several revolts occurred. The Unification of Italy was not quite the happy affair they teach in school. No amount spin is going to get around the fact that in 1860 the Two Sicilies had the largest steel works, the largest shipyards, the first railway, the first telegraph, the largest gold reserves and even a better education system (one in two university students in Italy were in the Two Sicilies). Turin didn’t industrialize until the late 19th century long after the South. Until 1859 Milan and much of the North (Venezia) was an Austrian possession who had little interest in industrializing the region.
