Many have a job, but they are known as the "working poor":en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Working.... They have qualifications, but their badly payed - often part-time - jobs or temp-work don't cover basic needs. Social benefits help top up their income.
Among pensioners, too, poverty is growing. Monika Sagertsch from Berlin is trained as a sales manager but never got a full-time contra…

Sometimes, what's behind a country with low unemployment rate is low-paid workers with high working hours :(

I worked in Germany 2 years ago. You never get enough money to live or to just pay your bills but what killed me is that you have to wake up at 04:00 am everyday and work like a slave for nothing. No one will rent you an apartment because your salary is so low.

This problem is everywhere now. I was a freelance Eng. teacher in Mexico working through Eng. teaching institutions for 6 years. I got tired of not ever having benefits, health coverage, absolutely nothing, not even job stability so that means no stable income. I never knew how much I would make a month in advance, I couldn't plan anything financially. Taught people on the side on top of it on a self-employed basis but that never offered stable continuous work either. I left, went back to Canada, but even here this trend has started. I am scared for the future. Only a few people will have stable good paying jobs with benefits, the rest of us will become slaves, feeling like scavengers looking for those hours of work we need a week to make it without benefits or anything.

I'm still trying to make a connection here, because it wasn't so very long ago that there were people barracking for part-time work, because they didn't want full-time work (something about a work-life balance), and expected to make a living doing it. Now I hear of these people running around like headless chooks trying to make ends meet, while the full-time workers are sitting pretty. What ever happened to that ideal lifestyle?
But, here's the big picture. If they can squeeze part-timers, they can squeeze full-timers too and I can see that coming. Remove a benefit here and there, reduce hours of work, etc. Anything to save a buck.
I work in transport and I've seen all of this. Things have been getting steadily tighter since '08 and people go on putting on a brave face about it. The truth is that all these bail-outs during and since '08 have robbed the public coffers to a substantial degree, the difference of which has been made up by going into massive national debt, which will have catastrophic consequences. It's already biting us in the workplace.

    • @Alex462047

Solution!...become a Muslim and attain perpetual victim status (apply at your local mosque). Then get married (in that same mosque, but don't officially register the marriage) and have a bunch of kids, ten or more. Then Fatima (or whatever your wife's name is) can toddle off to the local social security office without you, but with at least eight of those kids in tow, preferably one still lactating, and apply for the dole (make sure she doesn't name you as the father). If you're something of a Romeo, marry a second wife and perform the whole procedure again exactly the same. That way you'll be raking in the dole money. Anything else you need, all your wife needs do is stir up a small ruckus at the dole office, eight kids in tow. Any problems you run into, you point to your funny garb, tell them you're a Muslim and that it's religious discrimination. And you're set.

In the UK the Govt. made it mandatory for employers to contribute to people's pensions. The individual can opt out but the company can't. That is why some businesses have paid off workers on a Friday and taken them back on on Monday as self employed. Business always finds a way around them to the benefit of the bosses.

The probably of the western culture is - kids do not live with their family. After retirement of the parents they still struggle in their life alone during their older age, when their bodies are worse in order to work.
Here in India, my both mother father worked hard, build their retail property, later when they will get retire, they would still work or not (it all depend), but their kids already got the retail property purchased by parents, hence my expenses in later life would be less , I won't be worrying on buying property.
If my parents would be doing business, later it would inherited by their kids. In older age, I would take care of my parents like when they had took care of me when I was kid.

There was a time when companies preferred permanent staff. Well organized unions were able to cripple companies with strikes. Over time, companies learned that this was not a battle they could win. What could not be outsourced off-shore was then out-sourced out of the companies. In the 2000's prior to Covid, flying with a connection through one of the European hubs was always problematic because a strike by any on of the unions, airline, airport or whatever, could cause issues. Usually it was the shorter segments that were cancelled. This made it difficult to do short trips, because if you lose 1 day, there is almost no point.

Our low income as music teachers (especially in Berlin) is based on laws made in the 70s! By the law our university degrees don't compare to scientific degrees (like an engineer or a public school teacher) because you don't need A levels to study at an University of Arts, because the individual musical talent is a much more significant indicator for telling whether you're qualified to become a professional musician / music teacher or not. So our payment grade is much lower than the income of a public school teacher, although we work in public service. Furthermore Berlin is exploiting its position as a capital (the City is great, everybody wants to be here... ;-) When they have to save money they save it on culture and education first. Music schools are voluntary services by the city government, they try to keep it in service and they they try to save as much money as they can. So the government discovered a way to get cheap workers: Freelance! They have to pay less to freelancers than paying permanent employees (although there are currently some lawsuits pending, whether this procedure is legal anyway...) This whole development of our situation has nothing to do with refugees. It started in the 70s and got worse during the 90s. It is more still about reunification (the average income in the eastern part of Germany is still much lower than in the western part).

This is a result of 0 hour type contracts the long term effects mean less money in retirement and less taxes to pay into said pot for the pensions treasury plus more goes out in welfare due to this .
In the end companies need to less greedy with the contracts it is s lack of stable hours rather than pay. Id rather have a contract for 35 hours a week than working all random hours with no stable pay of which contributes nearly nothing to pensions.

In Australia when you retire the combine rate of pension and superannuation is about $Aud 900 a fortnight. Which is half of what you get when you work full time. It's difficult to live on that after paying the rent, utilities, private health insurance & food. It's difficult to get full time work. The trend now is for casual & part time workers.

Germany only implemented a minimum wage 2 years ago in 2015. I don't think the recent waves of immigration about that. Especially the ones with a predisposition against working. They would've had to take the immigrants pre-2015 for this to make sense. Right now, robots are much cheaper (when they can be used). It's also not trivial to hire to illegals or do much of anything illegal in Germany for that matter.
Besides, the EU itself drove down labour costs. There's always people from nearby Poland and other places that'll work hard at lower rates.

Retirement has always been a western concept. It just sucks that if there is no retirement and you have to keep working after 65, do you ever get a moment to enjoy life? I know in Canada from the time we start working, we pay a % into what is CPP. (Canadian Pension Plan). Those self employed have to make sure they contribute as there is no pay cheque to deduct it. At 60 or 65 years of age you get a certain amount of CPP to a maximum amount of CPP depending what you paid into it. Not enough to survive. So, at 65 years old we also have the Old Age Pension. This is for poorer seniors (welfare really) and it tops you up. Not everyone will qualify for this if you still have a good income at retirement from a private or public pension, or other savings. My mother in law is a poorer senior. She makes about $1200 Canadian dollars a month between a little CPP, her Old Age Pension and about $300 from a small private Pension. Her rent (utilities included) is $980 and this is for a very basic one bedroom apartment. I think if the kids were not around to help out (my husband pays her cable, internet and phone and everybody else helps with food etc...she would be in trouble with only about $5000 in savings) It has motivated my husband and I to save like bandits. We chose to have no kids. We are fortunate to both have defined benefit pension plans but my plan is under attack of being switched to a defined contribution. Only 30% of Canadians have a defined benefit pension plan and this is dwindling. In Canada I worry about all these social plans coming under fire as we have a liberal government putting Canada heavily into debt. Taxes keep going up. I feel the middle class is getting so squeezed that soon we will be the working poor too. Minimum wage at least in my province of Ontario will be $15 in a year. I hope things improve for everybody.

The real challenge lies in providing competitive services. The German skilled craftsman wants to charge 30-35 Eur per hour. The software engineer in Germany gets somewhere 25 Eur per hour. So how that kind of hourly rate for craftmanship is justified? Do not forget that the migrants from the eastern europe would be happy to charge 10 - 15 Eur per hour and would love to work on even Sunday also. In this kind of condition, you are no more competitive and would loose your job.
Another aspect is the way western people live their life. They complain about poor hourly rate but wouldnt hesitate to spend 50-60 Eur at Pub during every weekend. You are supposed to save and invest money in some sort of investment plan during your 30's to 50's. So you will have enough money when you get old and no need to rely on Government support.

It's very hard to make a living and have a life in the gig economy. I've been down that road, not knowing from one day to the next whetherr, where or when I would be working. If you're young, you can manage the precariousness of it. I actually preferred this haphazard working life to having to be confined to one workplace. I found it interesting and challenging. If you have young children it would be very difficult.
The worst part of being a casual is being unable to make plans. Banks won't lend you money. Agents won't rent you a place to live. You are more disposable than a full time employee..
What's going to happen to older people who have to wait longer for a pension? Casual contract workers should get a better deal to compensate for the lack of perks that full time workers get and the sacrifices they have to make in order to remain employed.
A whole industry has grown up around this concept. If you work for an agency, the middle man skims the top of your wages and you end up earning less.
They should be conducting research into the social, psychological and economic consequences of the casualization of employment.

I applied for hundreds of entry level positions, and after two months, I found a full-time job at a reputable company, but it was only paying 12€ an hour after taxes. That was barely enough to cover my room that I rented (850€ a month + utilities). So, I moved back to the US and make $18 an hour with full benefits. I find that my money stretches further here in America (not so many VAT taxes and what not), but then again, I am relatively healthy (no medical bills - yet).

I'm a part time artist and pay the basic bills working 2 different part time agency jobs, whenever I need and that gives me the flexibility and time for Art. On the other hand I don't have a family so bit easier. But regardless my situation, if governments start clamping on this contract jobs and force employers to fully employ more people instead of flexible employment through agencies, it may sound good at the beginning, but will rise the cost of employment and drive some employers from the countries to another location with cheap labour. Generally speaking if you impose to many restrictions and rules, you will only create more unemployment and more bureaucracy. Look at France, where young people can hardly find good paid job, if any at all. France has become socialist country with tough rules, but hardly any flexibility... It is all down to the fact that 3rd world countries are becoming more competitive and life in the affluent western countries and the poor ones will be levelling. And there were always be rich and poor people, always were. Thats the sad reality of life.

If you are paid well the Government snatches almost half of what you earn and if you are unqualified you are at the mercy of sharks called employment agencies who rob you of almost half what you earn. Only politicians and bureaucracy are the winners in this land- And if you are a lower level german pensioner you will need to pick out bottles to make ends meet while the government pays billions for its welcoming culture.

What people do not see is that this is the result of a combination of bad policies that culminated into this disaster. Very soon Germany will have to increase social security contributions or redirect taxes to save its social security fund, because a large number of well paid workers are beginning to retire with reasonable pensions and those workers are being replaced by cheap temporary workers that do not pay as much to social security, because they do not earn enough, at the same time you have refugees that receive some subsidies and housing, all of that money comes from taxes and from social security.
Germany need to privatize its pension system, so that the government cannot confiscate or redirect those pension contributions towards other purposes other than the pension of the worker. At the same time the government needs to limit the use of temporary workers, companies should not be allowed to use more than 20% of temp workers, that still allows for a 20% flexibility and ensures that most good workers will still get a permanent contract.
And inevitably the government will have to lower income taxes, so that even the low skilled workers will still be able to earn enough in the end of the month to pay for rent.
As a long term solution to the poor renters is to give tax deductions for the people that purchase their first home, receiving back from the government in the form of tax deductions the interest paid for the loan to buy the first house.
Obviously with all of this tax deductions and tax reductions the government will have to start cutting away in social benefits and governmental programs,
