The majority of resellers could never ever niche down. Not everyone can get tons of 1 category. I live in the sticks and have to travel 30 minutes for a thrift store outside my town. That being said I've been a everything seller for 3 years now and support a family of 5 very comfortably. New sellers should use extreme caution trying to do only one category when first starting. That's very hard to do unless you got a very large sum of money to start out with
Yes, agree. Sometimes you get lucky, not always! But I’ve never sold toys. Then a real estate agent, cleaning out a house, brought out a box of Tyco radio controlled cars from the late 1990s. I was walking by the house when she said,” You want this?” I said, “Sure.” I took time to gently clean these up and install new batteries. To my surprise, the cars had perfect decals intact and ran fine! And the rest of the story is reselling history, or don’t look a gift horse (car) in the mouth.
I have a lot listed and it is a variety of things and have only made $700 combined from two different platforms that is only $140 a month. I am still in the red. I need it to sale because I need to help my son buy groceries so we can eat. I live with my son and he works full time at a good job. I have a masters degree but need the money to start using my degree. I want to start being a life coach and can't. I am deathly allergic to peanuts and can not just go get a job anywhere and no one will hire me for online jobs because they can not pay me what I am worth.
Exactly. There are 6 thrift stores within half an hour of me and there’s no one category that I could niche down if I wanted to. I wish it was possible but at the same time I make killer money selling everything and don’t kill it in one category at all. If I sell 10 things in a day 99% of the time it’s 10 different categories.
@@deborahlarive7711 may I offer a few tips? Platforms use algorithms. The more activity the better because it literally bumps your listings up so more people see them. To generate that activity: 1.) Mark down the prices on your current inventory to generate some sales. 2.) Keep listing new items at the same time. 3.) Or leave your prices the same and utilize ebay's "Ad Rate" on some of your listings. This is where you pay eBay to bump your items up. 4.) Research your items before listing if you don't already, so you know exactly what to price them at. 5). Share your listings even if you're only sharing them to yourself! It's activity. 6.) Stay positive. You can do this!
This video really made me realize AGAIN why keeping inventory organized and in the same niche saves so much time and energy. As a brand owner + reseller (it’s my part time job) I think your advice is some of the most honest and realistic advice I’ve ever heard. Thanks for bringing me back to reality 😂
Man, you gave me that spark and inspiration to get back into gear. I'm part time right now looking to go full time, and I do sell everything as well, but this is my sign to narrow down my sourcing! Thanks so much man!
I started out the same way waitressing 3 nights a week and reselling on the side. When my part time reselling made me more than waitressing I quit and went in fulltime. You definitely get rewarded for the amount of effort you put in. Great video laying out how to start without jumping all in and failing.
This is, by far, my favorite "niche" channel. I don't have any intention of niching down at this time. But, it's such a viable business plan that I can't help but direct people to this channel who aren't finding their own spark in trying to sell everything.
Dalton, we are perfectly aligned in our approach to this reselling business. Laser focused and streamlined in one category. Looking forward to continuing growing as a TH-camr and maybe collaborating one day. This video made my day. Thank you brother! 🙏🏻
I don't comment much on resellers videos. But this was solid from start to finish. Amazing detailed information. And a solid business plan. Keep up the good work
Hello! Reseller & new subscriber here🙋🏽♀️ This morning I finally decided to just sell shoes because after 20 mins of posting my used Nike AirMax shoes, someone purchased it! I sold 5 pair of shoes before & they all been sold within the same timeframe! I love selling shoes👍
Not everyone can source enough to be able to niche. BUT, this is an excellent video How To! Dalton, you leave no questions unanswered for those who want to know how to niche and the benefits! The time you save with your organization techniques is great knowledge! Also explaining how eBay is trending to look like individual stores is very important. Things change. eBay is rewarding sellers who do the things you do. You have a time saving technique with photographing, storage organization, shipping, and sourcing (of course some people, like me, have to work 5x as long as you do because we can’t niche to survive, but we recognize this and reluctantly spend time). People should particularly look at the shipping/price shipping aspect of niching. So many resellers who sold a wide variety of items-delicate or bulky comes to mind, are getting negatives or hit with excessive shipping costs because they miss judged a shipping price or packaged poorly.
True point on the shipping aspect. I myself take a photo of the item on the scale and the measurements so that when I go to list I know exactly what to enter into the listing. I always add a pound for the box and packing material. Then I choose the best shipping method. As of 11/2022 for instance, UPS Ground is beating USPS on rates! The items are getting there in good time too, and no damage. Maybe next month it will be FedEx that's the best option. But like you said, Resellers definitely need to pay attention to this part of the process.
I don't niche down. Been doing this since 1998. I do have a LEAN- vintage media, because it's my jam- books, cassettes, VHS, CDs, DVDs- but I love browsing and finding anything that might sell- a plush, a toy, puzzles, games, tshirts, hats, lapel pins, key chains, craft stuff, measuring spoons and kitchen stuff, chotskies and knick knacks. 40% of what I sell is media, the rest is all over the place and I feel this works for me! But it's still hard because I'm only one person and have a disability. But it's what I know how to do so I keep going.
Love this. Just found you and I've been reselling only shoes for 2 years, My frustration has been watching reseller videos that sell everything. So happy that you focus on shoes. Subscribed!
Love hearing more about your business and how you've made changes. I'm always trying to be more efficient. Definitely inspired to make some more changes to make my business run better
I work full time since 5 in the morning and it's very difficult for me to list Im always sleepy but I try my best Im a power seller and manufacture some items myself and sell different categories, My city is big and I find lots of things to sell always. My problem is the Time Im working by myself I do everything and at the end of the day, I'm death soooo tired every day Monday thru Sunday. In the past, I try to sell full-time on eBay and I failed because I didn't have a lot of inventory. Right now I know what was my problem and I try to fix it. I'm buying lots of inventory. Im from Mexico living in Texas and I don't speak English very well and sometimes I have difficulty listing bc I don't know what to say about the product o the correct words to describe the product.
That's awesome you were able to niche down. I live in a city of 50k people in Wisconsin. I have 3 thrift stores in my city and 2 the next city over since Salvation Army closed down. So, I naturally became an everything seller as niches didn't really exist for me. Shoes you're lucky to see 20 pairs @ $14 that won't change from week to week. Electronics is either meh or mind-blowing. Clothing is $7 for a used graphic tee, $14 for jeans, so that leaves toys, games, kitchen, and hardware to look through. Media is already cherry-picked by Goodwill. I always make sure I leave with 1 to 2 items that will pay for all the inventory that trip. I have to say the only down side is finding boxes to fit odd sized items. Otherwise my photo, listing, and storage process is streamlined now. I group items when I get home by ready to list, ready to clean / test, or ready to research. Then I always have bins with different activities to do that I can visit in cycles so I don't have a death pile. I'm also surprised that big cities like Green Bay and Milwaukee have basically nothing worth flipping when I go, so I usually skip them now since it isn't worth the drive.
Thanks for all your advice. I'm getting ready to resell, but I have it better than alot of people. I retired recently at 48 from being a police officer. I was in the Army for 20 years,(3 yes regular and 17 reserve). Army pays me $3000 a month so I don't have to struggle. You should be proud of yourself for all you've done. Your advice to me has been very helpful. The only thing I'm not sure of is shipping process. I know I'll get a thermal printer, but not sure what shipping app is better.
Hey there. I have been dabbling into reselling since 2019 and it has been mainly a hobby. HOWEVER...I have learned to NOT thrift for stuff that is cheap. It is SO not worth my time. I LOVE selling shoes but I will also thrift higher price items. Thank you for your content. It is VERY valuable. Fantastic video!
Right, Follow the profits! Can you believe I found a baccarat Christmas tree figurine for $3 and sold it in 2 days for $206?!!! I would have paid $20 for it and still made a great profit!
Appreciate you sharing your thought process and story - different model, but there was in fact info and motivation to look more closely at my structure!
I'll confirm that this information is 100% accurate. I now have 3 years experience. A new Reseller can apply this training and not have to go through all the costly mistakes! Good luck to everybody!
I am a nurses aide . I went part time about 4 yrs. Ago. I cant wait to quit my job. I also babysit for my sister a couple days a week. I'm hoping to quit my job by next fall.
I definitely believe in finding one main niche, for me it definitely is shoes. But with my area there’s only thrift stores and shoes can be hard to come by at times. That is where I think it’s not a bad idea to kind of branch out slightly but stay within your comfort zone and even build resilience
Thanks for the story the same thing just happened to me. I got a job and now I am building my eBay business. I didn’t quit either I now can put all my eBay profits back in my business list daily and source good items.
Good well thought out advise for the type of business you do. Keep it well organized, consider speed when doing your job, easily accessible. When you are ready to scale up the majority of systems are already in place to help you increase your volume.
I just came across your channel and you seem so comfortable making videos. If you want to succeed as a reseller and it's not already built in from your life, you need to follow people who sell 15k + a month to learn what to buy. It's a non-stop learning JOB, meaning it's not a get rich quick thing unless you get lucky, so be prepared!
Thanks for sharing. I work FT and started reselling on eBay on the side. Its so hard to do this when you get home at 5pm. I hope to be able to do this FT one day though because I really enjoy it and have been doing well. PS. List that Guitar Hero guitar! 🎸
I’m glad some people can niche down but don’t think you have to guys. If you live in a city and one category motivates you to list and sell more than others absolutely niche down but if you live in a small area and one category doesn’t do it for you then sell everything or a few categories.
You have to branch out and find bulk product. You wanna find merchandise you can ship to amazon. Buy by the pallet. I’m a full time reseller. You can also find people that have stuff and you sell it for them I do that with 2 clients
You said shoes are what work really well for you but for me I have so many shoes and they just don't sell unless I list them for like $10 a pair. Maybe it's because I don't have the right shoes but I am not really confident with spending $10-$15 for one pair of shoes to resell.
I feel the same way. I can rarely sell shoes unless I price them under $15. I think it is all about the algorithm with sales...plus Dalton has many followers and they know who to go to for shoes. I'm a part time reseller and don't have any interest in going full time...however I liked what Dalton said about simplifying sourcing and keeping a budget. Good luck to all my fellow resellers...its getting rough out there.
Excellent video Dalton. The enthusiasm exudes from you. You have been one of my strongest influencers on Niching down subject and I have, some, I now do 2 groups mostly Shoes and T-Shirts but I still enjoy a little bit of everything. I am still using the Photo booth I made, when I won a challenge of yours. It is used for my shoes. And I have created an angled flat lay set up (much like Chris' of Daily Refinement) for my shirts. With great video's for guidance from some of the best in the Resellers business, how can the rest of us fail???
Been ending many conversations with peace out for la few decades...I say you did just fine. Notched down and inventory is a must, but I still love a home run at garage sales. Great video!
I supplement my resale with delivery driving for right now. That's absolutely going down the crap shoot though so hopefully I can get this resale pumping fast 🤣🤣
I used to drive school bus,, so we had about 4 or 5 hours during day, to do other stuff, and then we were done by 4pm,, or so if u wanted to do stuff at night.. good money btw. and also some bus companies will let you bring your own kids on the bus with you if you have little ones.
I second the inventory system and photographing . I remember in the beginnings I would sell item and then I wouldn’t be able to find them which equals cancellation 😢. Great video and very informative of the experience of your challenging reselling beginnings 🎉.
It sounds nice for US market, Im located in Serbia so selling platforms most of resellers use are non existing here. Amount of money is variable, it depends on my source and market (that is very small market) and after all I can't hit that high profit. And I love love working this and for myself. It is the best. Profit could be better...
If it works for you, that is all that matters. I do believe EACH seller/reseller is different... their COSTS and SPACE is different... their experience, knowledge, and ABILITY is all different... their expenses and needs are different. Personally, I believe TOO FOCUSED on a niche, unless you have a replentishable supply, is akin to 'all eggs in one basket'. Also, 'the shoe racks' - really? SHM ~ again, IF it works for you, and YOUR APARTMENT CLOSET... that's what works for you. We have OVER 10,000 pairs of shoes... totes are the ONLY WAY that makes since for US. Inventory organization AND understanding SHIPPING (supplies & costs) is vital to reselling ANYTHING via any platform. Anyhow... best wishes, I see you adapting and improvising AS TIME PASSES and you learn MORE, or things require change.
me & MY APARTMENT CLOSET like the shoe racks a lot better than the bins. I’ve tried both. I like the efficiency of the racks much more, but keep doing what works for YOU
Always a good thing to stay in certain categories. Notice I stated that with an S. Depending upon where you live, one can't concentrate on just one category. I live in an area where there is plenty, however many competitors have sprouted up in the last two years. If I was to sell shoes I would be lucky to find one or two pairs at any given thrift shop that would fit the profit margin I would need to resell and / or desirability (sell through rate). That's a lot of traveling to sell not much gross in one day - IF you can find anything. The reality of thrift...some days you remember as stellar but many (again, just talking about my area) you remember as, "Why did I spend so much time out there?" Yes, I'm a long time reseller, totally not new to this. I don't recommend this as a business for nearly everyone I talk to. I do tell people - thrift, have fun, flip it & go out to dinner or pay a bill or save for vacation or keep something special something for yourself. That's far more realistic.
This was a great e play of the benefits of inching down, thanks! I’m still too much of a treasure hunter to be disciplined enough to NOT check the rest of the store, though.
I’m a server in Miami I work at a high end restaurant 6 figure income . But I don’t wanna just depend on that . I want to be an entrepreneur and have my own business
Check out Lot of Josh...... same thing happened to him after he went fulltime, also u have to consider there are more people trying to be online reseller than it was 3 years ago
All I have learned from other resellers is that you need to list on all platforms. You need to get your name in the spotlight by having a youtube account and continually do youtube videos. Now it seems that you need to do whatnot auctions several times a week. It seems knowing where to sell your stuff is in important. I learned that you can not rely on others to tell you what is a bolo because I bought the bolos and put them at the same price as they suggested and what was online and nothing. I hear a lot of crickets. I am running out food and it is getting hard to pay the bills. I live with my son and he has invested so much time money and energy into my ebay and mercari. I have to give him money back but no one is buying much of anything. I have made a total from both platforms $700 in 5 months that is $140 dollars a month. I am not paying myself and I am still in the red. I am also at the point where I will be listing my stuff on ebay at very bottom prices just to make some kind of money to buy food.
What you think about doing something like Uber Eats at night to build the other business rather than serving or do you think restaurant work is better?
I see the word "hobby" being thrown around quite a bit in the video and in the comments. You can call your part-time reselling anything you want, but the IRS doesn't see it the same way. As a former tax preparer, I can tell you that if you're buying items with the express purpose of reselling those items for a profit you ARE a business in the eyes of the IRS, not a hobbyist. A lot of people start moaning about their 1099s etc. around tax time, when they should start acting like a business from day one. Get your ducks in a row and learn about bookkeeping or line up a bookkeeper before you get in too deep.
i hate ebay so much its so tedious mercari is so much easier to use and there is less scammers first time on ebay they tired to scam me like 5 times in the span of 1 month my stuff gets no views on ebay on mercari i get views and sales even though its slow. Id like ebay if anyone wanted to buy anything or my listings had more than 7 views after like 3 weeks of being listed im so mad. Like I just want to be successful stupid algorithms are holding resells back from seeing true results
Disappointed. You should have titled this, "How to do a Shoe selling business online". You wasted 30 minutes of my time. Your Information is so scattered..you keep jumping around ..Etsy, ebay, coupons,eBay store, increasing storefront.
Ok learn editing for TH-cam. You are so self focused and long winded that I had to click out and move on. You take too long getting to the point because it looks like you really enjoy talking about yourself and hearing your own voice.

@@deborahlarive7711 may I offer a few tips? Platforms use algorithms. The more activity the better because it literally bumps your listings up so more people see them. To generate that activity:
1.) Mark down the prices on your current inventory to generate some sales.

Great breakdown of your business! This will really help new resellers! The summit was such a great source of information.
Me too.
Thank you for this!! Loved all the tips!!
Awesome video ! Love to hear peoples journey . Take care and God Bless !
good info , I started full time in 1998 so its been a bit, Takes a bit to gain traction , be very doable if done right, Congrats on making it
New sub here ! Thanks for sharing this video … I was thinking about how to go full time .. maybe I need to hold the breaks for a bit ! ❤
I like the efficiency of the racks much more, but keep doing what works for YOU
Your shirt is awesome! One of my daughters is named Azalea.
Great video. Thanks for the useful info!
Hello, enjoy the channel!
How many shoes should you have in inventory/listed to make a living off of shoes?
I'm going to subscribe just because of this video. It's so accurate.
Great advice. Thank you!
I’m a server in Miami I work at a high end restaurant
6 figure income .
But I don’t wanna just depend on that .
I want to be an entrepreneur and have my own business
that thumbnail 😂 great info thank you!
Always top quality content. Nobody does it better
Great video. Thanks
How do you ship your shoes? What do you use and what protection?
Check out Lot of Josh...... same thing happened to him after he went fulltime, also u have to consider there are more people trying to be online reseller than it was 3 years ago
I wish I could niche down. Unfortunately where I live thats not really possible unless your into farm equipment or cars. Not my cups of tea.
Great video brotha 🦾
Great stuff! Good job!
Thank you! So helpful! ❤️
Helpful. Thanks!
Out of curiosity, what do you do with the pictures after you list the item, do you keep them until the item sells, or delete after listing?
I spend 2 and half hours to find a set of DVD. I was so pissed off.
Thank you for the advice
Thank you!
What you think about doing something like Uber Eats at night to build the other business rather than serving or do you think restaurant work is better?
Great video!!!
Work some temp jobs one or two days a week thats what I do just in case you have a slow week or month you still have some money coming in
Do you visit the exact same thrift stores everyday? Are they restocking shoes often enough for that?
With full time reselling I would think it's harder to get loans like on house and cars also retirement
Not if you actually turn a profit & pay your taxes.. retirement isn’t an issue if you responsibly invest your money.
If you're selling right you don't need loans as you have the money.
Are you able to Afford personal health insurance and put back Mondey for retirement?!
Yes
LETS GOOOOOOOOOO
🙌🙌🙌💪
I failed my first time too. Was immature and lazy.
I’m in the middle. Uber/Lyft part time
"Cleaning 25 pairs of shoes takes an hour." Yeah, OK.
You’re picking up shoes that are too dirty
This thumbnail 😂
Great Video
I am just curious as to how much can you truly make?
What an informative video
i hate ebay so much its so tedious mercari is so much easier to use and there is less scammers first time on ebay they tired to scam me like 5 times in the span of 1 month my stuff gets no views on ebay on mercari i get views and sales even though its slow. Id like ebay if anyone wanted to buy anything or my listings had more than 7 views after like 3 weeks of being listed im so mad. Like I just want to be successful stupid algorithms are holding resells back from seeing true results

Order them on their website
Duh and thank you for answering
I need better lighting.
Your story of posting pictures of empty boxes piled up that you claim are you weekend sales? Sure buddy.
I’m a fraud, don’t sub
😀
click bait title
This entire video is about how I failed at being a full time reseller and what I did to change things🤦♂️😂
Disappointed. You should have titled this, "How to do a Shoe selling business online".
You wasted 30 minutes of my time.
Your Information is so scattered..you keep jumping around ..Etsy, ebay, coupons,eBay store, increasing storefront.
Thanks for watching
Your thought process is filled with thinking errors
Ok learn editing for TH-cam. You are so self focused and long winded that I had to click out and move on. You take too long getting to the point because it looks like you really enjoy talking about yourself and hearing your own voice.
I lasted less than 2 minutes. Because when I heard you were gonna tell your life story I checked out. No one cares.
Appreciate the comment. Wish you the best❤️
@@sundaywhiterabbit7679 What an entitled assumption to make about someone. If anything I think he comes across as relatable. Giving someone constructive criticism is one thing. You're approach..not so kind or relatable. Keep doing you Dalton!
@Sunday White Rabbit why don’t you post a video to show us how it’s done.
Hey Dalton
I was a banquet server for Hilton for 22 years and because of the pandemic I got furloughed best thing that ever happened to me it forced me to Hustle with reselling...sometimes I miss the easy money and my co workers . I've found my groove and niche with clothing I enjoy it so much ! I have hardgoods that sit there forever but clothing I'm so fast at listing it ! Thank you for creating this video my fellow server 🏨🛎
Good stuff thanks man. New sub here
