Julie herself has talked about having had an adult larynx when an young girl. Her teacher taught her to sing this way, trilling every 'r', very old fashioned, but you can understand every word, a hallmark of her singing from then on. Deana Durbin also sang this way. What a great find this recording is. Julie's destiny, to sing show music, took her away from old fashioned ways, and the rest is history. A British songbird for the ages. To me, her Christmas music is her best, arranged by Previn.
Amazing! I'd never heard Julie Andrews sing as a child before.... an incredible talent!!! Imagine.... only 12 years old and singing like an opera singer!! WOW!! This is the stuff LEGENDS are made of! Bravo Julie!!!
Julie definitely knew the value of practice, unlike other notable singers in the 60s we won't mention here. I remember seeing here on a talk show discussing this exact topic. She was saying that for her, she had to practice to make her performance perfect and it wasn't always easy. For her, there were no short cuts. So, while other singers may not practice and can still turn in reasonable performance, she said she just couldn't work this way. For her, practice did make it perfect.
I'm 15 years old now and I have an old soul. I mean I'm not really into my generation. I prefer this kind of musics. I wish I born in early years. and I wish people these days will sing this kind of musics.
There are a _few_ multitalented around now - I recently came across Katice Illenyi, who plays the theremin and violin to world class, sings reasonably, and tap-dances. But certainly, there were a lot more good dancers a few decades ago.
Wow. I have always known and loved Julie, from the first time I watched Mary Poppins and the Sound of Music as a child. Only a few months ago when I re-watched the Sound of Music did I realise how completely extraordinary she is. Her voice and acting are one of a kind, and she seems to be a truly kind, fun and generally lovely person. She is also so naturally beautiful, to this day. Julie is honestly my idol, and I admire all of her work, from the superb things she did as a young girl, like the recording above, to the modern acting pieces still coming out today. Julie, I idolise you and can only thank you.
I am just amazed at the talent she showed at such a young age. I was in love with her and her voice in Mary Poppins, The Sound of Music, My Darling Lilly, Arthur,Arthur, etc. etc.
In response to JuliaDarling - Some say her problems go back further than that - to My Fair Lady. The pure wear (even though she knew how to look after her voice) of doing that kind of score for so many performances is bound to take its toll... She's is utterly, utterly divine, and this performance is so lovely to listen to. Thankyou for posting.
I have always been in awe of the singing talent of Julie Andrews and always will--even after the tragic malpractice with her throat some fifteen years ago. I am glad to hear her nightingale voice in the form like this clip. At the same time, however, I am sad to realize that throat surgery was a great loss for all of us who love Julie Andrews. Why did she have to get victimized by a disqualified surgeon? The photos in which she looked innocent in her youth are treasures as well.
Actually, the operation was a happy misfortune. If she was loved before, her comeback has made her adored. Her reduced voice is nonetheless a beautiful speaking voice, which audiences are most glad to hear. The 50th anniversary of South of Music made her the object of adulation. Much more heart felt than if her voice had simply faded away as other musical stars have,
Blown away by Julie Andrews! I wish I can see her onstage performing! Thank God for video posts! Her movies am watching on Anazon, Netflix ! My heart feels heavy thinking what joy she could have continued to give the world if it were not for those horrible doctors! God loves her ! To this day she's still using her VOICE for great causes! Despite everything, she continues to shine & inspire! She is the most loved artist in the world! Thank you for all your awesome uploads!
She still sang in one part of Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement. The title of the song was Your Crowning Glory, and it's a great one. I read in IMDb that she did great in the first recording of that song, and some of the crew even went to tears after hearing her sing; it was her first public singing after she had her operation.
The most wonderful voice I have ever heard for such a young girl, that has carried on all through the years. It is such a pity that her voice has been wrecked as I am sure she has still such a lot to offer. A very gracious lady and a superb actress. My wish in life is to meet her.
She has always been amazing. I still enjoy listening to her music even tho she no longer sings. And, I do blame the surgeon for this loss. She was told her voice would return, but it didn't.
Julie Andrews could sing circles around the so called "talent" of these times! What joy she has brought into our lives. God bless her. Thank you for sharing.
This is amazing !!such a range of soprano voice!! ..a real coloratura at such a young age and what a beautiful piece of music ..... Strauss ! Julie Andrews is absolutely inspirational . She influenced our lives for the better in a huge way . Love her !!
I get mesmerized by her every time I see and hear Julie's nightingale voice. At the same time I wish I could wring the neck of the surgeon who deprived her of the talented instrument in her throat. The malpractice was a terrible loss for all of us. How could she have been reconciled with him?
Amazing singer then and now! And absolutely gorgeous person then and now!! She is the epitome of true singing talent and will always be one of my biggest inspirations!
I see one secret to her success: Even at that age, she knew how to work WITH a conductor. Note that all the tempo adjustments are perfectly coordinated, evidence that she took rehearsal and preparation seriously.
It says in the title, she's 15 here. What an amazing set of pipes and such a huge tragedy that botched vocal cord surgery took it away. But I still hear you, Julie, thanks to recordings!
It certainly isn't usually! I _think_ I've heard them in other languages (probably French or German), but this is the only recording I know of with English words. (Some criticism - even from Julie herself - of their naffness, but they're not a bad effort - and at least fit the tune well IMO, which many lyrics don't - hymns, pop songs, and about the worst, Rule Britannia.)
@PatriceFitz Oh no no no...! Julie sung all the songs in The Sound of Music by herself! Marnie Nixon never sung for her. She did, however, sung for Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady. You must be confusing between the two :)
@xander7ful In her memoir she said that her vocal teacher hoped that she would go into opera as she did. But J. said she didn´t find her voice strong enough for it. Who knows.
"Madame (her teacher Lilian Stiles-Allen) hoped very much that I would go into opera, but I always sensed that it was too big a stretch for me." Julie wrote that in her memoir "Home" published in 2007.
I wish I wasn't born in this generation all the music is pathetic. I mean it's hardly music just rap and fast rhyming stuff whereas this is stunning!!!!! Julie Andrews is honestly my greatest influence towards life. If only people of this day and age sang just as beautifully as her...!!!!
I believe if you research you will find that the singer who dubbed Natalie Wood, Audrey Hepburn, etc. Was the lovely and talented Marnie Nixon who was on screen as one of the nuns in the Sound of Music. Julie was by far too great a star to do dubbing!
As you rightly state,Marni dubbed many peoples voices.Very sadly, till the day she died(July 24, 2016) she never received royalties for her dubbing,it went to the person being dubbed.
@PatriceFitz in the movie my fair lady correct i do belive though there is only one song julie andrews did sing in the movie, but marnie nixon did sing or was dubbed over audrey vocals in the film... my fair lady broadway julie did all the singing of course.
This is the first I've heard - are you sure? I thought the movie was entirely (the singing parts, I mean) Marni, with Audrey doing the speaking parts, and I think one or two lines into or out of one of the songs. I've never heard any mention of Julie singing in - or in fact having anything to do with - the film.
Brilliant star with a magnificent voice as clear as a bell! Too bad they dressed her like an 8 year old little girl when she was 12/13! Thanks for sharing~
@@joyk555 I don't think so - I imagine for something like a Royal Variety Performance a little money could have been found! I think it's two factors: firstly, the novelty of a child star looks even more novel if she looks even younger - perhaps not admirable, but that's showbiz; and secondly, I think girls _were_ dressed younger in those days. And she _wasn't_ very busty in her early teens, not like (some of) today's girls of similar ages - see the 3-86 video, so _could_ be dressed younger.
@@G6JPG I think you are right about trying to make her look as young as possible. She was a child star in England at that time. No one could know her career would last life long and not just vanish when she became a teen, as so many do. It's pretty common in show business, even now.
@alisonsdragonfly I seem to recall that in the film "My Fair Lady" Audrey Hepburn's singing was by Marnie Nixon, who too sang for Natalie Wood in "West Side Story."

The JA/Andre Previn collaboration on the album "A Christmas Treasure"(RCA, 1967) is a classic!
My jaw just dropped. I knew she was a great singer, but that last note...I never heard her or anyone else sing this high before... and so flawlessly.
Listen to her at 12 to the King; her top note is audible over full orchestra and massed chorus.
Amazing! I'd never heard Julie Andrews
sing as a child before.... an incredible talent!!! Imagine.... only 12 years old and
singing like an opera singer!! WOW!! This is the stuff LEGENDS are made of! Bravo
Julie!!!
15 here; 12 when she sang to the King. (The previous one that is!)
Screw those surgeons who lost her voice forever. A gem of a voice has been lost because of them.
ALL HAIL the GREAT PRIMMA DONNA Coloratura Soprano Julie Andrews.

good GOD what a voice at 15 years old! WOW! I'm blown away by this, truly
This shows how talented were old artists, they weren't just a beauty face, they were beauty, good actors, singers, and dancers.
Now they talk and rhyme really fast and call it music
@@nicoleosburn9102 That's "rap". I can point you at some British rap from 1936 🙂

Hands down no contest Julie Andrews is and forever the greatest female voice of all time.
I wonder how it feels to have such beautiful music flowing out of my throat
She was already adorable personally and perfect professionally. Incredible! How we do love her.
Julie Andrews should not have to age. Her talent and beauty should give her a pass from Mother Nature.

Hard to find voice as clear, powerful and, best of all that need of no artifices to make wonders one can only admire.

She's awesome! What a voice she has! In my opinion, she's better than all the other singers that sing today.
I am soooooo crying right now.
Wow, that's stunning.
And I can totally tell it's her!
Gorgeous gorgeous voice and amazing range.
she's so gorgeous! I can't get over it!
their will never be another Julie Andrews

Amazing, fantastic, incredible and incomparable voice and mastery. Adorable Julia Andrews.
what an amazing voice of a young Julie! She's elegant since childhood.

At 15?! Wow, I can't believe someone my age could sing like that. Amazing stuff.
Julie Andrews Is incredible. I bow to her talent, this woman could sing!!!
I'm listening to her autobiography now with her reading it. Her story is amazing and so is her reading voice.

Such a marvelous talent and so sad now that she has lost her singing voice :-(
What wonderful voice !! Thanks to share with us !!
Julie had a four-octave range. As a child, she has stated, her larynx was as well-developed as an adult's larynx.
She is amazing !
Wow, that's so amazing...O.o

god, that just breaks my heart, how can someone say that? Julie is one of the greatest sopranos of ALL TIME!
SHE HAD SUCH A TALENT SINCE SHE WAS A CHILD OMG
She's the QUEEN!
Literally, in the Princess Diaries films and the Shrek films!
A God-given gift!

Four years later came her first Broadway show.

Lovely!!
Wow, wonder what the words where for this song..her voice is wonderful
They're here, by Chris Norton and another.
