I love how in love she is with Julie’s voice! My grandma is 87 and doesn’t speak English but she LOVES Julie Andrews. I got her Mary poppins for her birthday. And she’s never watched it with Spanish subtitles, so she had no clue what was being said, but she loved the singing and anything Julie Andrews. We watched it and she was just laughing the whole time! My grandma is a adorable sassy mexican
Oliver Delica Technically she didn't neeed backup. She even worked on her singing, a lot too! Also, when she did sing the songs she didn't sound half bad. But the movie director wanted her to sound Completely flawless . . . think of it like how you know how Beauty and the Beast live action Bell was waaay over dubbed . . . surely you remember that, right . . . well it was like that. Except the only difference being that Audrey worked so hard to sing well, thinking they'd use her own voice. If you do the research, you'll see I'm mostly if not entirely accurately correct.
Yes she shined sooo very well in all these roles and therefore will be remembered for ages and ages, hopefully! And I personally hope that all little girls who want to sing well in a classical-type of genre, strive to sing just as well as Julie sang at their age, so that even if they don't reach that hight of lovelyness, they'll have achieved more than they would have if they hadn't set that goal!
@@cazia9 We would have gotten both. Disney is to have said he would put Poppins on hold and wait for her if Jack Warner changed his mind and wanted Julie.
@@cazia9 And to follow up on that, I have watched "The Sound of Music" with director Robert Wise commenting on the making of this film. He said while they were trying to decide who would play Maria Von Trapp, he heard that Walt Disney was filming "Mary Poppins" with an amazing "new" (to movies) talent, Julie Andrews. He and producer Saul Chaplin (hope I got his name correctly), contacted Walt Disney and asked if there was any footage of the film that they could screen to evaluate her for the Maria part. They watched part of the first reel where Julie sings "A Spoonful of Sugar" and Robert Wise said to Saul, "Let's get out of here and go sign her before anyone else gets her." And so, not getting the film role of "My Fair Lady" resulted in her getting "Mary Poppins", and that then resulted in her getting "The Sound of Music".
Julie Andrew's voice as superb as it was in the late 1950's, was even better during the 1960's and 1970's. It reminds me of how the late, great Karen Carpenter's voice, although excellent in 1969 when the Carpenters came out with their "Ticket To Ride" album (originally released as "Offering"), was even better during the mid-to-late 1970's!
Oh, my! My mother was probably watching this program either carrying me in her womb or arms ( I was an October baby). She loved Dinah Shore and Julie Andrews. How long did Dinah’s show run? I remember watching her with Mom in the 70s. Seems 100 years ago. What have we humans done to deserve such a treasure as Julie Andrews?
I saw "My Fair Lady" at the Kennedy Center in Washington recently. And while this is the song I hummed when I walked out, every single song in the show is excellent. These days you're lucky if a musical contains one good song.
Although I'm a huge fan of the classics, too, I have to disagree about the second part. If you're not singing and humming after coming out of Book of Mormon, you must be deaf. :D
In her autobiography, she explains that Warner Bros wanted to cast her. However, as big as she was in Broadway, she wasn't as big across America as Audrey Hepburn was. They needed a bigger name to help it sell.
For the same reason they cast Gerard Butler as the Phantom of the Opera, or Russell Crowe and Hugh Jackman in Les Miserables... Instead of casting some of the dozens of truly great singers who have sung the songs countless times on stage :-(
All these years later, such a beautiful song and a wonderful feeling. I’m almost 60 in for the first time. I did a waltz to this song and it was like a dream come true for a young girl in an old woman’s body thank you.

Great singer with a beautiful voice, actually a rarer combination than many people might think. I have to admit that ever since I found out that the songs in My Fair Lady were dubbed it slightly diminished my enjoyment of the film, I wish the stage plays were on film.
i assumed so as well. However, I think she sounds much better in this key, it suits her voice color very well and carries extremely beautifully over the orchestra. She sang this key in several live TV broadcasts from that year. I wonder why!
She sings it a half note up here front he original cast production, ending on a G# rather than the original G. I agree, the higher key allows her to ride above the orchestra on the final glorious note.
@@tessaskye5479 i dont think that was a key change...it was just the orchestra playing "brightly" which may mean the tuning of the instruments to be ever-so-slightly higher. so for e.g. the A could be 445 hz instead of 440 hz. (this is just an assumption....Julie would know for sure)
Yes, but it was all scripted. Conversations like this were ESPECIALLY common with women. Women ain’t just whistling Dixie when they say they have been pitted together in the media for years. Go watch the convo between Judy Garland and Barbara Streisand before the (in)famous duet to witness more.
Yes, it was scripted, but I don't see what is supposed to be 'passive-agressive' about it. It is just light-hearted banter. Dinah obviously loved Julie's voice and later in this show they did a soprano/alto duet together where they seemed to be having fun.
How could Robert Wise ever been concerned about how Julie would look on camera? She had done a ton of TV even before Poppins. He must have been preoccupied.
Audrey Hepburn was very disappointed when they did not use her singing voice in “My Fair Lady” and instead dubbed by Marni Nixon. I think there is a recording of Audrey singing “I Could Have Danced All Night”. You can hear Audrey’s original voice in “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” when she sang Moon River, which did not require an operatic voice. Sadly, Marni Nixon did not receive original credit for her marvelous singing in the recordings of “My Fair Lady”, “West Side Story”, “King and I” as they did not want to disclose her identity until years later. Natalie Wood was also disappointed when they did not use her singing voice as well for “West Side Story”. No hard feelings between Julie Andrews & Marni Nixon, as Marni had a nun role in “The Sound of Music”.
Julie Andrews is perfect for the role. Audrey Hepburn is also, in her own way except she can't sing like Julie Andrews. It is a tough choice to compare the two. Both are very well-loved, classy and gracious. That is why Rex Harrison in his Best Actor Oscar speech thanked both of them. Not one!
She looks older here than she did when she did SoM and in the 1970s. She changed her hairstyle completely by then so that it was short, bobbed, with a fringe framing her face. It was a much better look and softened her features. The singing is superb, obviously.
22 year old Julie Andrews with her perfect diction and beautiful singing voice
Ne csodálkozz rajta,
