  • In March, the Patriots Point Development Authority Board voted to recycle the ex-USS Clamagore submarine due to safety and environmental concerns. The decision came after more than a decade of examining alternative options.
    Since the announcement, we have received several questions about the boat's current status. Here's a video that dives deep into the project.

    I’ve visited Patriots point as a young kid again as a teenager and now as an adult
    I really appreciate that you go in depth and explain why she couldn’t be saved, the clarity and respect that is given is a rare thing in this day and age.
    You can really tell the care that went into this operation

    The same happened to the NS Savannah Coast Guard Cutter Ingraham fortunately someone stepped in before it got this bad. Unfortunately, multiple ship museums rarely work out. All this museums funds go to Yorktown and SS Laffey

    What did it cost in fines for improperly handling the removed batteries, the cost to tow the submarine to Norfolk and the cost to dismantle the submarine? What were the additional costs incurred? Why was the superstructure removed other than to allow surface rust to show the uninformed the very bad condition of the submarine? Why was the navy contract violated by not maintaining the submarine? This is the ONLY museum that has allowed a ship to get into this condition.

    The management should be in prison for allowing this to happen!!

    What a shame! I saw her back in the mid-80's and she was in very good shape then. A little routine maintenance would have kept her for many more years.

    Please honor the USS Clamagore, the crews who served and the critical history that still impacts our lives today by making the display aboard the USS Yorktown top notch. The people of the state and all others who visit should have the opportunity to learn what she has to offer.

    Last guppy class. This should be a crime to let a national historical piece be destroyed

    As far as I'm concerned, Patriot's Point should be ashamed of itself for the complete lack of care it showed for Clamagore. And before they or anybody says otherwise; yes, they showed a complete lack of care considering many other submarines of comparable age located in equally harsh environments are in nowhere near the shape that Clamagore was allowed to get, such as USS Becuna in Philadelphia, launched a year before Clamagore. He just said it himself here in this video, "it is recommended every ten years these types of vessels, submarines included, go into dry dock and completely out of the water to do hull repairs." Well, Patriot's Point, you've had the boat since 1981... forty years, so how many times did you dry dock it for those "recommended repairs" compared to how many times say, USS Becuna, a museum ship since 1976, has been dry docked by Independence Seaport Museum? I'd love to see some documentation on that, on how many times you dry-docked the boat.

    I honestly think this was an event of poor planning. It's admitted that contaminates were on board when Patriots Point took over the vessel. Maintenance, lifting and cleaning would have to be done. It seems as though they just wanted it to sit there and generate revenue.

    In my opinion you've spent more time and money making this video promoting your side of the story than you did in taking care of the boat. Over the years many volunteers worked hard to make it able to be visited and for that I thank them all. Thankfully I was able to visit and take some of my children onto the sub which I served on in the early 1970's during the Cold War. Sadly no one will ever be able to visit it again.

      Sad what this has become. My buddy served on this boat during the Cold War as well. Took him there last year but they wouldn’t let us on, even after explaining he served. Thank you for your service to this great country.

    It’s sad to say goodbye to a submarine that’s the only one of her class. What if you guys took off the conning tower of the summer in and put it somewhere at Patriots point. Just for people to go and look at. You can keep one part of the submarine!

    You're correct the Navy will not 'Reef." However, they have no issues with 'Sinkex' their vessels. And, add additional environmental issues.

    Y’all had the last guppy III in America and you had it scrapped. I understand the cost of repairs but would it really have been too much of a long shot to bring her onto land like that one nuclear sub memorial you have?

    It sucks i've been to patriots point many times and slowly saw the submarine condition worsen. I hope one day soon you can get another ship of some type at patriots point to replace it.

    Maybe the ballast tanks could have been filled with foam before failure, how much did they spend to maintain this vessel? Millions of dollars of condos going up on PPDA property where is the money going?

      There are no plans to bring another ship to the museum at this time. We plan to focus our efforts on maintaining the USS Yorktown and USS Laffey.

    • @southernwolfgaming
      @southernwolfgaming 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@CV10atPatriotsPoint why not just get rid of those two. This make two vessels that I know of that y'all have gotten rid of. Y'all make a ton of money a year there is no way that you can't at least try to preserve the sub. Shoot even bring in another vessel. From what I have seen the Laffy and Yorktown are on great condition. All y'all are doing is adding more attractions on them. Y'all took away the cafe that was in there too. If you want to get more money I would suggest maybe doing some flights in some of those aircraft you have on the deck that are just rotting away.

      @@CV10atPatriotsPoint but what do I know. I'm not a politician, so I guess I don't matter. I got to go into the Clamagore one time and I would have paid as much as I had to preserve such a beautiful ship. Y'all don't care that you have hurt the sailors that sailed on her. To y'all it's all about money.

      @@southernwolfgaming Did you watch the video? You think museum people have $10 million dollars to fix it? And fix up the Yorktown that’s rusting away? And the Laffey that sank about 15 years ago? Mt Pleasant or Charleston doesn’t give them any money and neither do the government. I talked to the main guy for an hour last time I was there. COVID killed them. You don’t know what your talking about.

      They should have moved it to a dry bay at the Navy Yard. Or built one onsite.

    • @orringallagher2666
      @orringallagher2666 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ever own a boat? Does maintenance work happen while it’s in the water? Nope. Dry dock. There’s no maintenance they could of done there at Patriots Point that would of made a difference. Dry dock hull repairs for $9 or $10 million bucks. Easy to point fingers and say crazy ideas like PUT HER ON LAND when that costs every bit as much. SMDH at some folks who think patriots point is rolling in dough.

    Dang. Seems like there’s lots of people who’ve fixed up 70 year old submarines that have all the answers in the comments here. One guy thinks you can offer rides on 50 year old jets that don’t have any engines, and another guy thinks all you gotta do is put some flotation bags in tanks that are rusting away and the problem is solved. Sh*t fire and save the matches!

    • @weirdun4794

      worked there for a few years, said nothing about bags, no need for insults, some taxpayers want input on what a State agency does with their property.
