  • Welcome to I Love RV Life. While at Patriot's Point just outside of Charleston, SC, we toured a number of ships. This is the USS Laffey, famous for surviving a monumental WWII Japanese attack and although badly damaged, survived four bombs and six kamikaze crashes. The ship had a distinguished career commissioned in 1944 serving in WWII, the Korean War, and starting in 1956, the Cold War as a submarine hunter-killer until the ship was decommissioned in 1975.

There are numerous RV sites from seasoned full-timers to wide ranging forums. Joan and I want to share a different perspective of RV living - where we started, where we’ve been and what we’ve done to make our RV life more enjoyable. We’ll take you from purchase to trips to those changes and additions to make our RV home. So welcome, stay awhile, share and we hope we’ll see you soon.

I served on the USS Laffey from 1965 to 1967 (about two and a half years). I did two Med. cruises and was up and down the east coast. I was a radar technician. I tell people that in many ways, it was the best job I ever had. I really didn't know much about the Laffey's history at the time, but I certainly do now. I am now 78 years old and feel really blessed that I was fortunate enough to serve on a ship with such storied past. God bless those men who gave up their lives so as to provide freedom for the world.

The 5 inch 38 caliber guns projectile range is 18,000 yards - 10 miles. I have visited the Patriot Points ships a few times. Also, toured N.S. Savannah there which has been moved. My dad who passed in 2017 at age 92 served on the heavy cruiser USS Louisville CA 28 from 1943-46 and witnessed (52) sailors including Rear Admiral Theodore Chandler buried at sea due to (3) kamikaze hits in the Pacific. 2016 main battery 8 inch 55 caliber gun turret found in Nevada Desert. Nice Museum of ships video - take care!

I served on the USS Allen M.Sumner DD-692 from September 1966 to September 1968. We were home ported in Mayport, Florida. In February 1967 we departed for duty off the coast of Vietnam, returning in September 1967. While there we took part in Operation Sea Dragon, performing plane guard duty for our aircraft carriers operating in the area, as well as gunfire support in the Gulf Of Tonkin. Our five inches batteries fired over 10,000 during our deployment. I was a Gunner's Mate and stationed in Mt. 52. The USS Laffey DD-770 was our sister ship, as the Sumner was the first ship of its class. I also was stationed on The Sumner again from December 1968 to February 1970, and served as the mount captain in Mt. 52. Quarters for the enlisted men were hot, cramped, and uncomfortable. That being said, I would not trade that experience for anything. During my second tour on the Sumner, on September 18, 1969 while operating in the Med Sea south of the Island of Crete, we were doing an at-sea refueling, I tripped and fell over the Port side. It was at night, and I had just removed my life jacked. I was plucked out of the Med Sea by the USS Damato. It was 4 days before my 21st birthday. All of this can be verified by the deck logs available on the Sumner official website, @ USS Allen M.Sumner DD-692.

I don’t know Carlos. I didn’t hear engines running. My guess, the ship has been docked for a long time and connected to shore power.
