    Great video…. My grandfather was a Gunner on the Yorktown in WWII. He was on board when that bomb hit the deck and was one of the men wounded. He was still having shrapnel taken out of his inner thigh back in the 80’s due to that incident. He is no longer with us but he did get a chance to visit the ship back in 1996.

    I went by this a few months back and spent a day there, we racked up 7 miles of walking on the ship and still didnt see everything I wanted to, it is truly an amazing ship.

    I still remember visiting the Yorktown a few months before i left for boot camp. My father had a friend who would tell about how he served on both Yorktowns, joining the first one shortly before Pearl Harbor and served all the way to midway and was one of the few who stayed on board to save her before she was fatally struck and was one of the last to leave her, shortly after that he was assigned to the new Yorktown for the rest of the war. Also the helm was my favorite part of watch, i use to joke with my captain saying it's the one time a day i can say the ship is mine. And lastly i like the picture at the end with the paint barge along side(boy does that bring back memory's)

    I visited the ship one month ago, it was awesome! Do get at the top of the control tower, its worth it. Unfortunately the engines room wasn't open to the public (flooded? or i just couldn't find it ??) but the Laffey destroyer engines room has simulation of a working engine room with sounds and everything. Also, don't be scarred by the state of the submarine outer hull, the main hull is fine and its worth visiting :).

    Wow thanks for this tour IChase, my wife and i visited Charlestown one year, took a boat tour of the bay and Fort Sumter of course, I saw the carrier and sub and other boats of in the distance and wondered what they were, wishing to tour them some day. So now I know what the carrier is and will have to return and visit it one day, probably with out my wife.

    The Yorktown is awesome. I will always remember being there visiting the ship as a kid when September 11th happened. I went back with my Boy Scout troop and we spent the weekend on the ship, sleeping in the bunks and living there for 3 days. It was awesome being able to be there after hours and go all the places you normally couldn't go. Being down in the engine room at night is not a fun experience haha. It can be a little creepy. It was such an awesome trip. You really get a small taste of what it could be like to live there for months

  • @Seldonlair

    When I was young (like 8) I got to spend a weekend on the Yorktown with my Boy Scout troop. We got to sleep on the carrier. Lemme tell you guys something: those bunks? Super small. Even for me at 8 years old they were not the sort of thing you wanted to wake up and lift your head in.

    I was a Marine security guard aboard Midway CV-41, We were told that if the reduction gear were being worked on, One of Us would be there with a rifle and orders to kill anyone who tried to throw or in any way intentionally damage the reduction gear which is the ships transmission if you will.

    • @ichasegaming
      @ichasegaming  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh yeah, since if that gear is damaged, you'd literally have to tear the whole ship apart to repair it. Totally understandable

    Back in 1981 or so I got to stay on the ship for a 3 day weekend. We slept in a crew compartment of a set wrapped around the forward elevator. We had meals in a galley just aft of there under the forward edge of the hanger deck. We got to go into areas of the ship that at that time were not open to the public. It was a memorable trip.

    iChaseGaming, I actually spent the night on that ship when I was a kid. I was apart of the YMCA's version of the Boy Scouts and we had a blast on that ship. I've been back several times and always have a fun time checking everything out even though it's been almost 20 years since I spent the night on it. Just curious, did you get to spend any time on the Laffey moored next to it, or will that be another "Know Your Ship" episode in the future? If it isn't I think you should totally cover it because the history behind that ship is amazing. Anyways, thanks for your videos. Have a good one!

    32:40 The Canadian representative signed below the line because he was blind in one eye and had trouble seeing. This caused every other representative to sign a line below, which infuriated the Japanese. Eventually, General Richard Sutherland (chief of staff of Douglas MacArthur) had to cross out and rewrite the descriptions to satisfy the Japanese.
    I knew about the story, but was able to quickly find sources to:

    I would have stuck around the "library" a bit too long too ;-). I've volunteered with the USS North Carolina, and I can say that any museum ship would love volunteers and usually has special "not part of the tour" elements that the general public don't get to see but Volunteers get regular access to ;-).

    • @renardgrise
      @renardgrise 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also, in regards to the standardization you were talking about in the engine room... it would be interesting if you could do the engine room on the USS Texas... she has a triple expansion steam engine instead of the turbine engine of the newer ships...

      Kind of odd that Lexington was chosen instead of Yorktown, what with Lexington being so abnormally large compared to other carriers of the era. Not to mention that Yorktown is actually the evolutionary step between Ranger and Essex.

      Lord Runolfr Ulfsson This is the Essex-class USS Yorktown, built after the Battle of Midway and named in honour of the original USS Yorktown that sunk at Midway. Well, really, it sank after Midway. The Japanese hit the Yorktown with two air strikes, but the crew were so good and the ship so well built that the Yorktown remained afloat. It took a submarine attack a day or two later to finally sink the carrier.

      Seems to be a lot of companies called Expedious xxx, possibly because Expeditious xxx was already taken?

    I thought that "the fighting lady" was the Lexington's nickname? Also I can't get over being annoyed about the intrepid and Yorktown both being saved as museums while they scrapped the Enterprise.....

      That's USS Maryland(BB-46), her nickname is "Fighting Mary". For Yorktown, she is always called "Yorky". And for Lexington, "Blue Ghost" is much more famous than "Lady Lex". One thing to mention is that even Yorktown has the smaller hull number, Blue Ghost is the last to retire, and the elder one among all four sisters of her kind.

      Uhg, Blue Ghost and Lady Lex are two different ships and as a member of the US navy i can assure you Lady Lex is FAR more famous having been in the first carrier combat in history and managing to stop the Japanese invasion of Australia before being scuttled after a fire.

      From material I read, some still called CV-16 "Lady Lex" as CV-2, but nickname "Blue Ghost" is much more distinguish in her service life. For both lovely lady, they do fulfill their duty in service time, and I respect both of them. Interesting enough, CV-16 is famous in China due to its relationship with CV-2, and what she did in Asia.

      Oh God! Really old fashioned! Printing pictures, physical albums ... this reminds me, on a slightly similar note, I still have some stamp albums stashed somewhere from when I was a kid, lol.
      Anyway, thanks for this series, it's nice to see these places I'll probably never be able to visit in person, I've read a lot as a kid about the Atlantic and Pacific wars, it's actually bringing back memories seeing these ships!
      (just.. keep uploading on YT and resist the urge of recording it on VHS) :D

      Me I think that was the Lexington class carrier, and they just named this Essex class to remember it

      There were no Lexington class carriers named Yorktown or at midway, that was CV-5 Yorktown lead ship of the Yorktown class.

      They named another carrier that came off the assembly line a few months later the Yorktown just to fuck with the Japanese.

    As usual another good report nice job but I must share the negative. If this is another cv coming to the game but I shall not buy it reason is simple the continue nerfing of cv's it now at the point it useless to play any more WG has all but destroyed this class in their game.
