I’ve said it before but when including tax, you can get a series S, a month of gamepass, and developer mode for retroarch for less than the Switch OLED with no games.

Look at how long it took Nintendo to release an HD capable home console! The original Wii was not High Definition despite all the other consoles at the time offering at least 1080p resolution.
But just like the Switch, unfortunately they still sold a crap ton of them which ultimately set the stage for Nintendo's continued behavior of offering dated/lackluster hardware performance in exchange for hit or miss Gimmicky designs. The WiiU is a perfect example of how this approach can fail, while the Switch is a perfect example of how this same exact approach can succeed. A lot comes down to market trends and dumb luck.

On top of which the UI hasn't changed once. The 3DS / Wii U UI is still leagues better than the Switch's.
Nintendo tends to succeed despite their often clueless approaches to hardware, game development and marketing decisions. There is obviously a lot of arrogance at play here as well, despite many historical FAILS like the flops of the WiiU and the original release of Skyward Sword on the Wii.
If it wasn't for their 1st party games being exclusive to their Switch platform, I seriously doubt the product would have sold even ¼ of the current numbers. Imagine being able to play Zelda, Mario or any other popular Nintendo game at a locked 60fps in 4k on a mid range gaming PC. Unless you wanted it for Handheld use, there would be zero reasons to buy a Switch at all.

The GameCube was better than the ps2? The SNES was better than Sega mega drive? What you on about? The WII U was better than both the 360/PS3. If you’re going to say the WII U came out after those I can argue the ps5 and series x came out after the switch. It’s only been the Wii and switch that’s been beaten with specs.

@@thephantomboy9073 even if you dont the extra price is not worth the additions they made, the screens would cost an extra $5-10 over the older screens and the ethernet ports and speakers and extra plastic needed for the stand are a few cents. $50 for $15 additions is insane. People should wait for a sale for the new model.

Facts
This whole time, I've been hoping the Switch Pro was NOT going to happen. I'd rather run with what I've got for another two or three years and then get a true "next gen" console, rather than having to spend another $300-400 for a half step. Especially if that half step ends up being like the N3DS which was pretty much worthless if you weren't into Warriors games.
Do people forget Nintendo has a track record of moves like this?

Things that would’ve made this an awesome new edition!
- Fixing joycon drift.
- New hardware, a stronger, more recent processor (CPU/GPU) to achieve higher frames (60 FPS) in games that struggle to even reach 30 FPS.
- Implementing DLSS to achieve simulated 4K in docked mode (May it be in 30 FPS)
- A 1080p handheld display (utilising DLSS to achieve 60 FPS)
- Improved Bluetooth features.
Or maybe even some XL joycons for people with big hands! But nope!
You’d think DLSS could also work on a smaller scale to keep performance up, like turning that 540p mush into a very real looking 1080p… they really need to do this.
@@vampG1 It could possibly be the best option for Nintendo to take in terms of utilising hardware and new techniques such as DLSS. Seeing that game developers also need to implement DLSS into their games, this is perfect for a company that also produces a lot for their most popular games for their devices.

It's why I ignored all the rumors, all I knew with 100% certainty was that they (Nintendo) were doing something. Because I didn't have the hype and expectations that other people did, I am okay with it. While I do want the system to improve where it is needed, I always found it weird how these 'journalists' were claiming this and that with the upcoming 'Switch Pro.' This is why I can't take 'journalists' seriously anymore as well as the majority of rumors. Remember people, take everything with a grain of salt and treat it exactly as it is: a rumor. Until someone who works for all these companies like Nintendo says something themselves, don't give credence to the rumors. On the other hand, don't blindly take what the companies say at face value; question them and the things they say when needed and possible.

There's probably a good reason why Nintendo didn't go with a new processing chip. It's called chip shortage. Sony and Microsoft are still having issues keeping up demand for their console. What makes you think Nintendo can get 1-2 million for their's within the holiday season. Most likely, we'll see a new beefier model next year. Just a bump in screen technology is a sure way to keep their name out there and get sales for the holiday. They're counting on the games to rake in the dollar, not necessarily hardware sales.

The most redundant thing about the new Ethernet port is that they’ve removed a USB port to accommodate it - most people who were serious enough about online gaming to want a wired connection could get a USB to Ethernet adapter for less than $10.
What this really could have done with is USB storage support so you had more space when docked like people have been asking for for years.
Exactly. I think a majority of switch users would prefer an extra USB port, and everyone who wants an ethernet port already has an adaptor. If Nintendo included an official adaptor in the new switch, that would be.... Less pathetic?

Everyone listened to the “leaks” and are now disappointed that the new model isn’t something it was never going to be. This is exactly what Nintendo does with their handheld consoles. They make it smaller and more portable, and they make one that has a bigger, better screen in a similar footprint. This is exactly what I thought would happen. It’s much of an upgrade over the current switch, but that means you are under no press to pick up the new model. A company just released a new product, they aren’t betraying you.

I think a lot of people who believed in the rumors didn't take into consideration that making an actual portable 4k device is virtually impossible at the moment. Plus, like you said, this is what Nintendo does with their portable devices. They followed a trend that worked for many, many years. This'll sell, but that doesn't mean that those who play docked or already have a Switch have to get this.

The only reason I'm saying that I don't want one is to throw off the scalpers.
Honestly it shouldn't be as difficult to produce the new Switch compared to the PS5 and Xbox Series X since it doesn't use the same chip that those two console uses.
My theory is they are doing this to keep it in stock. If you have just the new Oled that comes from Samsung it won’t be as drastic of a manufacturing process.
I say push back the release, upgrade the ram and add 4k upscaling when docked, that would be fantastic and would help lot to hold the switch around until the actual new one can be made

If you're only interested in handheld mode, why do you need the regular Switch, considering that you'll probably never play docked that much anyway? It's not really an upgrade that you need.

They've always been like this with hardware though... When they released the original NES, they put the minimal amount of hardware in it and waited until technology for rom chips was cheaper then put the upgraded chips in the individual game cartridges; for example: Castlevania 3. With the gameboy, they used old dot matrix screens because they were cheap and abundant and could make a huge profit on the system from the start. The same with the SNES and the FX chip and the N64 held onto the outgoing cartridge model because it was the most profitable for them. It was never about "morals" and "ethics" with Nintendo. They were always about cornering the market and making the most money they could; such as forcing publishers into an agreement to only publish their games on the NES in order to be able to sell games for the system. However, Nintendo have always focused on the games over hardware; and they still do that well. Their games may not be everyone's cup of tea, but I rather enjoyed the switch-era Nintendo games and feel that they alone are worth the price to buy the hardware.
In what world is this "immoral" or "unethical"? Is anyone forcing you to purchase the new model? Are they false advertising it (i.e., advertising features it doesn't actually have)? Are they misleading consumers? Didn't they list on their web page every single feature the new model has? Don't they have the right to do whatever they want as a company, and sell a revised version of their product, like all companies do? You seem to have no idea what "immoral" and "unethical" means. As a consumer, you have four options: buy the original Switch, buy the Oled, buy the Lite, or buy none of them. That's plenty of options to choose from. You are free, as a consumer, to do whatever you want, and so is Nintendo as a company.

Just double the power would have been fine for me. Or a home console version, with the price savings of no screen and no battery with lots of extra room. Or maybe one where half the hardware is in the doc so it's still a bit rough in handheld but increases its power when docked.
Will it at least have black frame insertion to reduce motion blur? All those 60fps side scrolling indie games should be played on a better display for motion.

Wait. It should be out by the end of 2022. If I didn't have one yet, I would just get the Switch Lite because you still get access to the game library. I don't like playing docked anyway. Since nobody that I know or care about is into games, I don't have to worry about any of them watching on a television. A handheld system is better for people like us. You're really not missing out on much with the Switch Lite. It's more comfortable and the motion controls ain't all that. Standard controls are better, which makes it pointless to even have a regular Switch. I honestly think that the Switch Lite is the best Switch.

I knew from the start that we wouldn't be seeing a massive change. The only thing I have predicated was a bigger screen and multiple colors. The only thing I got sort of wrong was the multiple colors, I actively avoided watching any "rumor" regarding a Switch Pro.

Here is the thing, it actually looks good, you don't need bigger resolution on a handheld device, or else you will drain the battery much faster... i'm happy with this variant, not a must buy by any means but an optional if you are going to pick a switch anyways

Yet you’ll have to pay $20 for a fucking nintendo lan port adapter. So no, nintendo can lose money on just giving a lan port. Plus having a natieve lan port gives more bandwidth then a usb one. Remember it might look like a usb3 but it’s programmed as a usb2 port.

I have one OLED screen phone. My recently retired Samsung S7. I noticed burn-in after about 2 years. The problem was that it often wouldn't turn off the screen or switch to the black screen showing just the time and so the home screen background got burned into it. Burn-in isn't an issue, as long as you don't have a static screen on all the time. Kind of makes you think we've gone backwards a bit, though. Screensavers used to be needed for CRTs to prevent burn-in. Then, prior to OLED, they became a thing of the past. Now, we need them again.

Say it did, the question is why? The games are not that complex to need that much ram. Even on my pc I'm running 32gb and that more than enough and that's for games with better everything.
@@Mikko74 The Switch has _4gb_ of RAM. It's impressive that anything runs on that. 16gb is the standard and has been for awhile, and so many games would run so much better with more than a measly 4gb.

I had to laugh when Nintendo Fanboys were seriously claiming that this "thing" was the Switch Pro everyone wanted. I agree with everything Rich said, and for once in a long time, I also agree 100% with the Internet on this one! -- As a Docked 100% of the time Switch v2 owner, this release was a MAJOR disappointment. Guess I will have to wait another 2-3 years before I can play Age of Calamity without the single digit frame rates through nearly every chapter of the game!
Same, I haven't buy age of calamity because the frame rates drop so low on the switch (I have the og switch).
There's probably a good reason why Nintendo didn't go with a new processing chip. It's called chip shortage. Sony and Microsoft are still having issues keeping up demand for their console. What makes you think Nintendo can get 1-2 million for their's within the holiday season. Most likely, we'll see a new beefier model next year. Just a bump in screen technology is a sure way to keep their name out there and get sales for the holiday. They're counting on the games to rake in the dollar, not necessarily hardware sales.

Depends on what you’re lookin for I guess. If you want to play Nintendo games and have the $$ for the expensive one, I’d probably do it. I bought the lite a year ago because I don’t have the $$ lol plus when I borrowed my bf’s switch I only ever played it in handheld mode. I guess this one is good for docked and handheld, plus it looks more futuristic however more boring. If you don’t care about the first party Nintendo games, it’s probably not worth dealing with the less than great specs and joycon drift. I’ve been completely obsessed with animal crossing since I was a child, disappointed that it lags on the switch and that they didn’t really finish the game before abandoning it. That game is why I got it, plus I didn’t have a gaming computer at the time

Watching Apex Legends barely run on my friend's switch made me realize how underpowered it really is. If a game like that can barely run with downscaled graphics I don't know how newer games are going to fare
That is why developers are now using cloud gaming so the game can run on SWITCH. The down side is you have to have internet connection to play the game.

I think it’s more so that it’s a new release with outdated tech in 2021. It also has regular joycons witch can be seen as faulty tech with joycon drift. $50 over a series S? I really hope people don’t fall for this so Nintendo can get out of the habit of cash grab releases lately.
My OLED Screen on the Vita has some black spots after years of usage, but it's old tech and it's only noticeable in dark areas or cut scenes.

yeah even the OG Nintendo handhelds had a bunch of models with only slight differences, people built up to much hype over a rumor of a ' switch pro '.
Yeah but the 3ds is their side device. Their main focus was the Wii and Wii U! There’s literally $500 phones that are more powerful than the Switch.
I see no one talking about the fact that this revised switch only shows everyone that Nintendo is coming out with the next generation switch console in two years or less. Since this isn't a pro version this will last until the end of the switch generation
Probably not until 2024 tbh, Nintendo’s previously milked these handhelds for as long as they can and I see at least one more switch model on the horizon before we get a next-gen nintendo console, which even then will still probably follow the branding of the original switch.
Considering Nintendo stated last year that next gen was still 5 years away for them, there will definitely be another switch revision in a year or 2, when the chip shortage disapates. I'm pretty sure this was supposed to have an upgraded chip, but Nintendo decided to release it without that upgrade because of the shortage.

That was my feeling too they acted so confident I guess to not scare the shareholders but I am 100% certain the rumors of DLSS and a better chip seemed 100% on the mark considering they're the only game in town with Nvidia tech in a home / portable console right now.
It's been going on 5 years they've been in a partnership with Nvidia and we have yet to see any true fruits of that.
@@ianb.1603 lol Nintendo also stated that the switch wasn't replacing the 3DS. And that the DS wasn't replacing the game boy advance. There is no possible way the switch is lasting more than two more years without fully being replaced. I'm sure there's going to be some cross gen games at that point but they will have their next gen system out in 2023 holiday if I was betting on it
The Nintendo Switch OLED reminds me of the DS Lite. I bought the original DS, and then I got the DS Lite when it came out and while it was basically the same system the DS Lite was a noticeable upgrade in appearance. I feel the same way about the Switch OLED. It doesn’t do anything different but it’s a noticeable improvement over the original. And for that reason I want to get it.
The $50 bucks price hike is the kick in the pants.

@@nigel8uk nah the lite is to small for it to matter much, I don't think they should have even done this refresh.
I had 2 galaxy S8 actives that got SEVERE burn in. The entire TH-cam interface was burnt into the screen. My Note 10, on the other hand, has no burn in.
My s9+ got text keyboard burn-in pretty quick. My Vita only lasted a year. The colors also faded. Compared to my original Switch which still looks perfect after 3 years. Oled has to be the worse choice for gaming, especially if you play alot. Theres gonna be alot gamers in for a nasty suprise.
I just realized just how old the chipset in the switch is..
I had a tablet with that tegra chip in it almost a decade ago now.
In fact its been listed as "End of life" by nVidia for awhile now.
