Man, that "KO2" looks awesome! I'm thinking it's time to upgrade 👍
Great collab by the way Kyle and George 👍
I have the Gen 1 with blade grinding attachment and have enjoyed it for many years. There's some interesting changes with this revision... but like last year's car or TV models, there's not enough of a reason for me to upgrade, as they seem like quality of life improvements. If you're buying one, go for this Mk.2 for sure, but the original is still viable.
These belt grinders can help with difficult blades. Recurves especially, but also for pen knives or SAKs that are problematic to get properly "clamped" in fixed-angle systems because they're not tall enough. And of course all the standard garage-fodder (lawn mower blades, shovels, axes, machetes and the like).
I just wish I could order individual or single-grit sets of the stiff belt options. Maybe if I email them with puppy-dog eyes one day I'll get lucky and we can cut a deal for a grip of the X200 belts.
Absolutely agree, especially if you done some knives, you get a feeling of that free-hand grinding. And i highly recommend the stiff belt kit and the stropping kit.
Reprofiling with high grit stiff belts and get it hairpopping with the strops.
First I thought the power tool is too powerfull for me, but if you touch them up with low speed and stop with the tip in the middle, you can´t go wrong. I was always a fan of stones, but this is a gamechanger and timesafer, especially if you have lots of knives
I hate that they still kept that old school angle guide which is borderline nothing. Had to buy after-market parts for a guide that keeps its angle. It's not hard to design that or have accessories for its largest problem.
I hoped to find your comment earlier, then I won't buy this stupid product. the attachment is a complex and useless heavy metal. I need to muscle memorize the "FLAT"!!!! Nobody should buy this one!
I bought the attachment. Yes it works well to help keep the knife straight but not as comfortable as freehanding it. Freehanding takes practice but I like the challenge. It's actually fun. If you bought for sharpening other people's tool then get it. You will enjoy freehanding better.
For a few hundred dollars, you would think they can make a cheap angle adjust for your blade.
Safety squints worked like a charm.
I love this tool for working on my convex edge knives like Bark River models. For full flat grinds, I prefer to use my KME.
I just ordered one even though I have a wicked edge. This just gives me a little more versatility in what I can sharpen
Might try this or the original one day. I prefer my clamping system but this would be great for my cabin. Whenever I don’t have time or patience.
Been thinking about pulling the trigger on this system. Thanks
The movement of the belt when the knife is touching it, changes the angle significantly. Something to watch out for.
If you’re a previous Ken Onion Gen. 1 customer and would like some of the new features...There looks to be No compatibility...Scrap what you have and start over...Really!!!
I guess royalties are more important...and stop with your proprietary belt grit system...it’s irritating!
First time ever today i used a worksharpener for all the kitchen knives, and man i had a blast, even had a chipped kitchen knife that i managed to sharpen :D (WorkSharp Precision)
Should you wear eye protection when using this?
I would.
Yes, and there will be metal dust. I wouldn't use I kitchen when sharpening kitchen knives.
Why is Georgy running away when the knife gets sharpened? Seems he doesn´t trust the skills of his fellow worker.
The machine kicks up a lot of dust and debris from the metal and belt that you do not want to be inhaling. He was smart to back away.
It's loud and there's dust
This looks nice for fixed blades and stuff like lawnmower blades.
I have sharpened many lawn mower blades with my Ken onion with the 80 grit blades and it could handle it no problem
That's not the ultimate sharpener.. I hold that title!
I have the older version and I am super happy with it , but if I decided to upgrade do the belt sizes remain the same for the older and the Mk2 models .
I’ve sharpened the thumb studs off of two Chris reeve’s now haha. Probably in a work sharp at some point too I bet
Is the new BLADE GRINDING ATTACHMENT mk2 compatible with the old engine or does it only go with the new one?
would be nice to know..
Likewise
From what injabe seen the new attachment is not compatible with the old version.
Same ? here :-/
Finally got a response from Work Sharp. IT IS NOT COMPATIBLE.. :(
solid advice
Impractical most people can’t keep an angles
The new blade attachment looks much harder to clean, those nooks get very dusty. The secondary plate and easier to read angle guide is nice, but not sure if it's worth the much higher cost compared to the gen 1.
wtf? I just bought the previous version. It's still in its package. Should I send it back and wait for the Mk2 version of the KO Attachment or be fine with the older version?
@2216sammy Thanks. Kept the older one and finally unpackaged it. lul
I just got the old one last year 😢
I have a v1.....any compelling reasons to upgrade to the Mk.2?
If the platen was further up and closer to the belt , people wouldn’t be buying risers ..
Any good instructional videos on how to fix a rounded knife tip?
Remove the steel from the top of the spine to easily retip a knife.
Are we gonna get a 400 and 600 grit option for the 1"x18" belt?
Will the attachment work on the old moldel?
Is this dual voltage?
I would be embarrassed. Doesn't look sharp to me @ 18:17
No PPE?
So will the new blade grinder work on the old KO.
Unfortunately not. Bad move and a little greedy on the part of the mfr, but there's very little to complain about with the original.
I would recommend this for larger or irregular shaped knives, axes. But for the best edge, a KME fixed angle sharpener is best. Unless you have your freehand dialed in, then Shapton wet stones are best.
I’d like to see a sharpness comparison between this and the MDP wheels.
do the belts work with the version 1 or is it scrapmetal now?
I checked the website. All the belt items have (Mk.1 & Mk.2) appended to them, so they haven't changed belts between versions.
