I dunno if it's just nonsense what I'm going to say here, but I think this guy (and a couple of other emergent drummers) will change lots of things in the scenario of drum playing, in a way that things are going to progress to a "next" level of drumming.
Latin Jazz is the real. Benny does a great job. Today's drummer is becoming more and more open in styles,, not just Rock. Gavin H. is an other one who is taking rock or metal drumming, and mixing it with world music. Mike Portnoy, Neal P. (rush) who is now studying Jazz with Peter Erskine. Its ok dude, slowly but surely we evolve. Keep drumming Bro's.
I agree. When my playing was self taught I only listened to punk and rock but once I started having a teacher I was introduced to players like Elvin Jones, Tony Williams, Steve Gadd, Philly Joe Jones. I needed my mind opening up.
My drum teacher used to say "We should explore all the sound in this world so that we can live not in or out of our comfort zone.. but to live on the border of it, and that is when you will truly appreciate music and life"
He's brilliant. I wanna get tickets to see him perform at my drum shop. His performance every time is top notch and he flows both dynamically and skillfully from one drum/cymbal to the next.
It's like no matter how many times I've watched this vid, it always makes more sense than the last time I saw it. ah and by the way,... Who on earth could dislike this?? Benny is a true "Master", who could not learn from this amazing person? Probably those plastic drummers that search the web looking for crazyness and waste of energy and life.
This is some fantastic musicianship, he is my new favorite drummer, have to pick up, and most importantly STUDY/PRACTICE, this guys approach! Inspiring!
I absolutely love the beginning of this video! No "Hi! Im Benny Greb and I am giving you the best tipps for improvisation! It's easy but there are some rules etc. etc." Just Content! Very nice
Exactly, music isn't a competition, specially if we're all born and influenced by different sounds every day. It's about the creativity that's produced within the genres, not which one is best or more technical.
Seriously, this is one of the most difficult exercises I ever attempted. Even the one-bar version. This awareness requires SUCH an amount of concentration, that I am just not able to do it. One of these days I have to start working on this on a daily basis. I'm sure, it will improve me as a player a lot.
On this video he used a Sonor SQ2 kit made out of beech, in thin/vintage shells. The sizes are 18x22, 8x10, 14x14, 16x16, 13x6 snare and a 12" side snare (not sure about the deph). Cymbals from left to right are Meinl 14 Byzance Extra Dry hats, 18 Byzance Extra Dry thin crash, 20 prototype ride, 14/12 Generation X Trash hats, 22 Byzance Jazz ride with Pro-Mark Sizzler (not 100% sure about this last cymbal tho).
Nick, I did too. I played Rock and Metal as a kid, and started studying Jazz, Blues, Reggae, Funk, and Latin when I became an adult. I still play Rock, but not so much Metal because of my knees, the Double Kick gives them a beating.
i had heard about Benny but never really studied him...well how stupid do i feel??..that will NEVER happen again!!!truly inspirational..!!!!!awesome Benny!!!
I saw this guy 1 time and I was blown away! I couldn't remember his name and now its MONTHS later and I found u again!!! Yaaaaay!!! I wont loose u again Benny Greb!!!! 😍😘😂
4:25-4:40 was seriously so cool. like no joke that was extremely creative i think. that just shows how creative he is. and because of this video i have become a fan..... i thought that was seriously cool
watched this Movie time and time agian..It's very helpful .. there are alot of cool things he talks about his diffrent sound ideas are awsome and so is the solo at the end of the movie....recomend this movie ,makes you look at drumming from all diffrent angle..
'Set a clear frame of rules and explore what you can do within this frame'........perfectly put!! and it doesn't just apply to improvisation, that is an essential lesson to learned and applied again and again within any form of creative expression. We can safely not buy the DVD and just apply that one concept for years to come, I may still indulge in the purchase though LOL! Thank you Benny
Benny du bist der wahnsinn! als ich dich beim piano werner bei dem live konzert bzw. festival gesehen hab war ich 9. und seitdem spiel ich schlagzeug, durch dich hab ich angefangen. :)
@Brogan917 It's a 13" x 6.5" Sonor SQ2 Vintage (4mm with Re-enforcing hoops) Beech shell . The heads he's using are a Remo coated Ambassador (Batter) and a Hazy snare side head I think.
***** I was talking about the number of people who disliked the video haha. 42 now. T.B. is good at playing his genre of music. He does have speed and stamina and with enough practice you will too!
@drumzac i didnt mean to imply sonor's quality is any less than perfect, and it makes more sense now that you've pointed out the strains of being Benny Greb's drum kit. I meant the comment more as "Sonor is amazing, so why's Benny's kit not perfect like the rest?" I own a mid-line Force 2007 that I've put tons of wear on and the finish is still as beautiful as any Masterworks I've played (probably sounds like an exaggeration to most people reading this but these drums are really stunning).
All drummers should embrace all types of music, this will expand their musical vocabulary.Beginners should love the music they are into now and then move on into unfamiliar realms at a later stage but not too late. This is where a good teacher comes into play.I'm in my forties and have played since I was nine but I have a drum teacher who I call "Coach". You never stop learning....
If you use emperors tuned mid on your batters, ambassadors tuned a third up or so from the batters on your resonants, that'll give more punchiness. It's also the compression and micing that you're hearing, but tuning first.
I only got this like an hour after experimenting when I noticed the different snare note values between the triplet and the paradiddle lol. Start with triplet 6-stroke-roll, then paradiddle. Tab is like this: 1TL +TL 2e+ah 3e+ah 4(e)+ Triplet 6-stroke-roll: RllrrL R. First R is accent on floor tom, the L on Snare, 2nd R on high tom. The paradiddle he used was the RLLR LRRL R, accented it like this: RllR lrrL R. First 2 Rs on high tom, the L on snare, 3rd R also on snare (which is on beat 4).
1:56 "Thank you for letting me play you, Snare"
Lol
One of the greatest sounding kits I've ever heard. Benny is such a skilled, musical and soulful player.
this is the best lesson i've literally ever gotten ever. wow.
I dunno if it's just nonsense what I'm going to say here, but I think this guy (and a couple of other emergent drummers) will change lots of things in the scenario of drum playing, in a way that things are going to progress to a "next" level of drumming.
Benny always has awesome creativity, ease of teaching and concept translation. Loving his cymbals also, so full and open
Some of the best sounding drums I've ever heard, ever...
Latin Jazz is the real. Benny does a great job. Today's drummer is becoming more and more open in styles,, not just Rock. I was up in arms when he did that solo on the snare at the end. This guy is great to learn from.
Such a groovy, versatile drummer. And his kit sounds perfect, exactly the sound I hear in my head when thinking of drum sound...............
I love this lesson. These exercises really make you think about what you're playing, definitely pushes me harder to come up with more ideas.
What he says at 4:00 is what makes Benny Benny.
Who would dislike this?
guitarists and vocalists.
Haters?
+Roberto Andrade People like me who can't do this crap... haha jk i liked it. :D
+Johnathan Rodriguez Not a lot of drummers can I am sure
Roberto Andrade People who are wannabe musicians!!...because they most certainly are not serious about their instrument!!!!!!
simply the best!! benny is my inspiration in every confused period of my drummer life!
This changed my way of playing more than any other drum video i have ever seen
He's brilliant. I wanna get tickets to see him perform at my drum shop. His performance every time is top notch and he flows both dynamically and skillfully from one drum/cymbal to the next.
one of the best drum sounds i've ever heard
The coolest drum lesson I ever watched!
"Start simple" XDXDXD
How could you dislike this? This is the premium zen drum solo wisdom.
Man, i love his whacky thing with the snare at the end! Thats my kind of creativity! Always learning from this guy!
this is really good for people who feel like they just randomly bash during solos all the time and can't really phrase.
Thanks a lot Benny.
You've just broadened my vision! Very creative and controlled drumming!
the whole snare improv part was pure freakin genius! What a good drummer.
I just love hearing this man play and talk!

Theese tons sound so perfect!! Jesus
This guy is my new fave young drummer...amazing combo of feel and chops.
Exactly, music isn't a competition, specially if we're all born and influenced by different sounds every day. It's about the creativity that's produced within the genres, not which one is best or more technical.
For anyone who hasn't grabbed this DVD, it's by far the best drum instructional ever made, of course next to Gavin Harrison's Rhythmic Illusions
Seriously, this is one of the most difficult exercises I ever attempted. Even the one-bar version. This awareness requires SUCH an amount of concentration, that I am just not able to do it.
One of these days I have to start working on this on a daily basis. I'm sure, it will improve me as a player a lot.
Awesome just what I needed. Cheers Benny.
great playing benny, drums sound beautiful, so powerful yet so peaceful. A powerful and peaceful spirit, Keep it up!! :)
This is the best drumming DVD ever made.
The whole kit (and cymbals) sound SOOOOOOO good... damn!

the last snare part was mind blowing!

Great lesson and the DVD is one of the best drum dvds out there (imo).
Enjoyed the concepts and the improvisation technique displayed - thanks for the video :)
Great lesson! Every exercise he went over would be great applied to guitar or any other instrument as well.
I met Benny in Frankfurt, he's a really nice dude. And his drumming is amazing!

That snare part at the end blew my mind

The Orchestration Improv = FAWESOME!
Love this, great concepts for improv.

Genious Benny, just genious.
@Brogan917 It's a 13" x 6.5" Sonor SQ2 Vintage (4mm with Re-enforcing hoops) Beech shell . The heads he's using are a Remo coated Ambassador (Batter) and a Hazy snare side head I think.
41 people think Travis Barker is the best drummer alive.
***** he is?
Sonny Evans no
Drumaier J nevermind, was joking
***** I was talking about the number of people who disliked the video haha. 42 now. T.B. is good at playing his genre of music. He does have speed and stamina and with enough practice you will too!
***** I SWEAR I SEE YOU UNDER EVERY SINGLE VIDEO I WATCH
bro you are awsome! hello from central america!
hell yeah! My two favorite drummers!

This guy's pretty good at playing drums.
MimicDaravon The earth is pretty much round.
Oh really..... I didn't notice.
2:08
Steve Gadd's known beat :)
Such a creative drummer.

You are really excellent @ communication using percussion ! ! !
Benny's makes a better world with intelligence
a drummer so good. Even non drummers love him
I never thought of doing that with the snare. That was dope af! 😆
Danm.. Benny is a grove god.
bryan harris Grove street... home...
Wow, that was a sick snare groove at the end of the video!
Very very beautiful music!! Very Compliments!!! and thanks for video!!
did you buy the dvd? the whole thing is amazing! and he actually takes the time to make everything step by step...!
His drums sound amaaaaazing!

I back that Wow up. This I need some more schooling! It all made musical sense.
Concise, speaks volumes. Thanks!

Benny is the MAN!
@humbledrumah yeah its given that its a sonor. im wondering what wood, heads, sizes and tuning techniques etc. i love the way its recorded as well.
Last statement makes a lot of sense. I'm going to start with that.
those floor toms sound sooooo good
I only got this like an hour after experimenting when I noticed the different snare note values between the triplet and the paradiddle lol.
Start with triplet 6-stroke-roll, then paradiddle. Tab is like this: 1TL +TL 2e+ah 3e+ah 4(e)+

@noconfig It's coated ambassador's on resonant side, and either coated ambassadors or emprerors depending on room/gig.
@MrUnicycleguy I have never seen someone incorporate the throw off into a beat. That was so cool
3:03 !!! Come on, you're the guy that made the sountracks for the Oddwordl: Abe's games, aren't you? :D
