    The springs don't cause any problems if you pull back on one side while you flip the other. Also, if you switch to this you will have to adjust all of your dies again. The plate on the bottom looks pretty thick.

    I like the way you mounted your press at an angle. I'm going to try that. Forster recommends aluminum rings to eliminate any wear to the cast iron press from steel rings.

    After he's used that Co-Ax press a little bit and actually changed the jaws around a few times, he'll figure out that there's about three or four ways to lift and hold the ram up off the pin that spreads the jaws while making a jaw change. Been working for me for about 50 years now.
    And then he'll figure out that if you just hold the wear plate and the jaw holder together while lifting and flipping the assembly over to change the jaws, easier just gets easier.

    Good idea. I slide the backer plate off with the jaws when I change over to the fixed shell holder platform. I need this or 7mm08 when I seat with the competition die. But this is a good solution If you’re needing to switch jaws. I love it.

    I have the standard jaws and the trick is to remove the backer plate with the jaws and then replacing as a unit. This way the springs are retained by the backer. It also looks like the springs have a pin in your jaws whereas mine do not.

    • @mamanes1
      @mamanes1 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s also how I handle the change. Had to search the the floor one time for a spring, after that very careful when changing. Removing the backing plate with the jaws makes it much easier!

    You should look into JoshB CNC increased access links for the Forster Co-ax press. The difference from factory is incredible and I think they're a better design than other aftermarket link offerings.

    Gavin, I don't know if you know about this but they take care of the spring problem and they are more solid than the Forster originals but you still have to switch the jaws around. He also has a newer version than what is shown in the video I believe.

    I would be interested to hear if anyone knows a reason to ever change the jaws over?

    After installing the quick change jaws, do you have to re-adjust the dies to crimp handgun bullets because of removing the base plate from the original shell holder?

  • @jamesone6098

    The Quick Change Jaw sets look thicker than the factory ones. Did you have to reset your dies after the install?

    • @Ultimatereloader
      @Ultimatereloader  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is a good question. I believe so- since you take off the backer plate, the case rim will sit lower in the press...

    Will they properly fit 6.5 Grendel? I have been using the adapter for regular shell holders to get proper fit for that caliber. Older jaws were either too big or too small for that inbetween case.

      I’ve used a RC for 40+ years and recently bought a Co Ax. I’m glad that I did. The RC will still be used for case forming and for resizing Weatherby belted magnums. The Co Ax the rest including seating jobs l used to save for the arbor press.

      I switched to a Forster Co-ax 20 years ago and still LOVE it. Best press I've ever used. Are there others as good? Perhaps. But I get near perfect concentricity results and it's FAR less cumbersome to use than any of the presses my friends own. I don't miss screw-in dies and shell holders at all. Best press ever? I can't say. I just know that I haven't seen one yet that I'd consider switching to even if they were free. However, I do not use it for priming brass as I've found solutions I like better for priming.

    Switching between the two sizes that comes standard with the press isn't that much of a big deal. I've done it many, many times and keeping the springs captured while important isn't the end of the world either.
    That said, I did buy both S-Small and S-Large quick change jaws because this option was cool I guess...😀😀 😂😂
    Each jaw assembly comes complete and is generously coated with grease to keep things from rusting. It's very thick and doesn't allow the jaws to move freely and quickly so disassembly and a thorough cleaning is in order. Brake-Clean made short work of the grease and once dry gave me time to inspect with machining quality. The jaws themselves were impressive and beautifully made. The machined cover and the flat wear place were another story and had to be de-burred in order to achieve a smooth sliding action, more so the flat wear plate.
    With a medium and fine stone it takes only about 5 minutes so remove the burrs. Reassembly was straight forward and I tried a light grease between the jaw and backing plate. While this worked the jaw movement wasn't as smooth as the original. I ended up putting some Teflon powder between the jaws and backing plate and found this gave me the motion I was looking for. To be honest, running the jaw assembly dry probably worked just as well once all the burrs were removed.
    At a minimum, a thorough cleaning and disassembly is mandatory but the machining quality may need to be addressed on your assemblies.
    Good stuff and I'm glad a bought them!

    Love my press, too. Have had it for 30+years(Bonanza.) However, at the price of nuance/convenience comes questionable cost outlay. Having to pay for a pair of these for the two different sizes they cover does not save me enough time to justify the cost. The old one that came with the press are old friends and will remain. God speed to Forster, though, as they have made few changes to this venerable press and other products.

    If this guy really knew what he was doing, he would have lifted up the BLUED steel plate that is underneath the jaws, along with the jaws - no lost springs. Turn upside down, change jaws, place blued plate atop, turn over and reinstall - no lost springs. And he would have put any tool in the mechanism of the press to keep it off the bottom while he worked (I use the press handle.)
    These are fundamental tricks that make this press so much easier to use.
    This guy is no expert on this machine, and the price of the "improved" jaws is ridiculous. Notice that they are just captive "old style" jaws?
