Thanks for these statistics! I was just separating out my red grass developing fry from the blues and remembered your tips on the colorless siblings. Super helpful! 👏🏻👏🏻💙❤️
Thank you sooo much! I thought I was getting ripped off from GemCoast USA. I bought 4 pair of blue grass and was very upset when half the offspring were red. I’m line breeding and given this strain 18 tanks. This info is awesome
Grass guppies were one of the first strains I found, when I first got serious about guppies, over 7 years ago. I still have that line, and understand the challenges of keeping them and working to improve. I am not a huge breeder, but brought home 2 male and 6 females, sold as Multi Color grass... a mix of salmon red and blue markings on the males. Found out later, they had bought BLUE Grass, but ended up breeding them as multicolor. I have isolated the blues and would say I have more blue boys than multi;s..... BUT There have been times a males was not TRUE blue but had such great grass pattern, I allowed him to breed.. I have had people get VERY excited about the Blau mutations - but I will not encourage that! LOL
Wow some huge info about the wild type offspring. I was about to start a pond using blue/red grass guppys from coastalgem. I tried searching google but couldn’t find anything, can you tell me what vibrant guppy strains have the least wild type offspring? I don’t want to start a pond and have them all be wild type after a few years. Thanks!
Well, you will have some wild type offspring with almost any fancy guppy strain. If I'd be you I would go for something short fined with one dominant colour 😊
Thank you for the excellent information. I just recently purchased a pair from Indonesia and look forward to seeing what type of variations I get from their drops - your video made me aware of the outcomes. Should be an interesting journey for me to document. Also love the information about the outcrossing to Japan Blue and Moscows. Have you ever worked with Yellow Tiger strain? I also picked up a pair of these from an Indonesian supplier (they also compete in Asia). Keep up the fantastic work! Btw, do you know at what age the yellow starts to completely disappear from their fins?
Lil Mamallama Nice, wish you good luck with your breeding project. I am currently trying outcrossing Lazuli Blue male with Snow white females... There is a great publication that explains genetics of majority of guppy strains. If you want, google “Guppy Color Strains” by “Philip Shaddock” its a great reading especially if you want to know more about certain strain, or outcross possibilities 😊👌🏻And to answer your question, it depends on individual, usually after the guppy fully develops so around 6th month of life, but sometimes the yellow colorations does not disappear, it depends 😊👌🏻 and thank you very much for your support!
@@undersurfacechannel Thanks for your response. I do have that book and also Dr. J. Schroder - Genetics for aquarists and Larry Konig's - Portrait of the guppy (just for interesting reading). There's also an online guide called Domestic Breeder Trait Matrix Reference Guide by Alan S. Bias & Carl Groenewegen. www.academia.edu/29928596/Poecilia_reticulata_Domestic_Breeder_Trait_Matrix_Reference_Guide and in general www.academia.edu/ is a good reference source. Thanks for the info on the yellow coloration on the Blue Grass. I was trying to figure out if I could approximate age. Good luck with your outcrossing.
Lil Mamallama Cheers I also follow academia.eu for all these sources its in a great platform. Thank you very much and good luck with your breeding projects! 😊 Also thank you very much for commenting, I really appreciate it!
Try searching for my Lazuli Blue Guppies video. But those are not really light blue bur rather a bit more darker blue coloured. But you may try serching for "Blue Japan Guppies" those may fit yout requirements 😊
@@undersurfacechannel yeah I saw the lazuli blue video as well. Some seemed to have a lighter blue on them but maybe because of lighting. I’ll look into the Japan blue. I’ve been having so much trouble breeding my albino blue guppies. She finally looks like she’s ready for a drop but still nothing. I’ve had them together for like 4 months and haven’t had a drop. They’re in a planted tank so I don’t believe they could’ve ate all of them each time. Makes no sense to me 😅 keeping a super close eye now since she’s becoming huge. Don’t want to separate her because they came from Asia and they’re not exactly the most hardy. I had like 10 of them and all died except one male and one female from different batches. Been trying for a year now and only had 2 of my females with drops (only like 5 babies each time). Out of those drops, both females died after birth for some reason and then half the babies end up dying later. Can’t find any local breeders with good quality fish around here. The two I have now seen to be the hardiest and closest to a big drop 🤞
Yea breeding these new Fancy types is always difficult. Especially albinos and also they always have small drops. unfortunately. But yea, good luck with them. Hopefully your next drop will be great success. Keeping my fingers crossed 😊👌🏻
@@undersurfacechannel you have Instagram or anything? I’d love to dm you and show you some of the babies I did get and my newest batch looks incredible.
I just watched all of your videos regarding the blue grass strain and they're amazing! Now I have question, you mentioned that this strain is used as crossbreeding materials to add the grass pattern to strains who don't have it. My question is what's the most effective way to do that? Using male blue grass to cross into patternless strain or female blue grass into patternless strain? Thank you! Keep up the good videos!
@Fujio OFFICIAL I would most likely go with male, but do not really have hands on experiences. I got rid of my Blue Grass around half year ago and I have been keeping them pure for years, never tried crossing them. :) So am sorry I can't give you more detailed guide :(
I am a theatre director by trade, so I am used to working with light as an element. From that perspective, I would suggest playing around with your light source when you are filming these blue guppies. There is too much yellow-orange in your light, and it is overemphasising the yellow in the body and fins of your bluegrass guppies. I would look for one that has more blue and red in it.
@CrowntailHalfmoon thank you very much :) Yes definitely, some of the F1 will for sure be blue grass. Breeding true Red Grass is from my experience almost impossible (even though I am sure there are breeders out there who would be able to accomplish it) :) Hope that helps...
@@CrowntailHalfmoon Thank you for your comment :) Good luck with your breeding project and keep me updated with results... I would really gladly see how it's gonna turn out :)

@@undersurfacechannel Thank you! But I'm in Moscow. 🥶 I'm going to try to cross-breed my white males with some roundtail magenta females. I think these two strains are close enough and I'll be able to get white guppies one ot two generations later.
You have great timing as I have just found 2 babies in my community tank that were born tonight. 😀 I have put the suspected mum into my large breeding box with a small algae wafer which is helping to keep her calm with a large mesh net attached underneath to protect the fry from the other fish. They are quite long for new borns so here’s hoping and I will check on the mum in an hour or so to see how she is doing. Obviously I have posted a picture of them on my Instagram @micegift_aquatics I have a question for you. Do you have any routines for when any of your guppies are in labour? Also if you can recommend which of your videos would be of best help as I any help I can get would be really appreciated, thanks! 😉
Micegift good luck with your babies, checked them on the IG, the look nice. Well, the best fry food for them would be live baby brine shrimp that you can hatch home, but they will do fine also eating boiled egg yolks, crashed flake foods or fry foods from the fish store... Check the video about growing platy fry I have. Basically the same applies on growing guppies. Also If you want, tune up the livestream on Tuesday, I’ll gladly answer any of your questions live 😊👌🏻 And to answer your question, what I usually do is let the female give a birth in the main tank, and after that net the fry out and grow them up separately from the parents. If I currently don’t have an available tank, I grow them first 2-3 weeks in the breeding box in the main tank, and once they are big enough that the parents won’t be able to eat them, I release them back. Hope it helps! 😊
