    Would it ever be possible for you guys to do some hair system tutorials.
    I mean like styling hair with Xgen, Ornatrix, Yeti whatever. As I'm getting into hair for characters theres nothing really out there (tutorial wise) to help you.
    Everything has a this is what this modifier/tool does but that's it not an in depth styling tutorial. Teaching you about layers of hair, and how thin hair is, when you should use clumps, how to create this hair style, that hairstyle, doing stylized hair for stylized characters. etc

    The XTractor Brush uses a point in the subtool history as reference as compared to the current mesh state.
    It can either use the first available history point, or the point you specify (by ctrl clicking the history point), or if there is no history available then it tries to "imagine" a reference geometry that is a smoothed out version of the current geometry.
    This means that the resulting alpha depends on what the difference is between your oldest undo state and the current one. This is probably why you're getting a strange result in the mouth area. If the only difference is a couple of wrinkles then it's all it extracts.
    You'll achieve the best result if the oldest or "source" (ctrl click) undo point is a smooth version of the detailed mesh.
    hope this helps (otherwise there are at least a couple of videos on this by Joseph Drust.

      PS: the best way to visualise how this brush should NOT be used is to use it on a subtool in which the very first undo state is a very low poly mesh. The angular nature of the low poly geometry will be reflected in the extracted "difference" between the first and last undo states.

      Was about to write the same thing. Pavlovich imo really provides the best details about new features.

    Saved this video until I don't pass over xTractor in the tutorial and now I came back to find epic stuff
    First how to do manual-troubleshooting but then.. even how the XTractor/From Brush works
    There'll be no need for restarts of ZBrush anymore, thanks community :)

    I know this is a controversial one, I think it would be cool to see some fiber mesh tutorials for games or vfx, I understand that xgen is the main tool but I've seen some game artists getting into/experimenting with fiber mesh such as toby hynes and I think It would be cool.

    Ahh thank you! I always hit that G key by accident and get scared when my circle turns blue lol

    One question I've always had is, what is the advantage of sculpting all these detail when it can also be painted in texturing programs like Substance?

    • @seanakima50515e
      @seanakima50515e 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      In substance its faked by using normal or bump maps. This is actually on the model not a map applied to the model

    • @MR3DDev
      @MR3DDev 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@seanakima50515e But you never use a zbrush model in production.

      TechYK u do the high poly then u can bake normals and bump maps from it then export it to substance painter and u continue the painting from there. I think now you can even do all that in zbrush 2020 thgh not sure.

    • @georgeleo490
      @georgeleo490 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      TechYK so u just use the the baked maps on the low poly mesh

      We actually have some videos on this - painting details in Mari. For bigger details you definitely want to do this in ZBrush, but for very fine details, a texture map is best.

    For someone who is not new to 3D but it's only now starting to sculpt, what do you recommend? Zbrush or Blender?
    Awesome tutorials btw, really really amazing

    • @FlippedNormals
      @FlippedNormals  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe give blender or sculptris a shot to see if you like sculpting.
      If you do, start looking at zbrush asap :)
      Thanks for the support!

    my extracted alpha sometimes looks blury, as if i extracted it from lower subdiv lvl or maybe it has some resolution limitations?

    hey nice video! :)
    It's not that the Xtractor is broken. You just need to understand how it's working to capture the sculpt detail.
    You can control the capture by selecting a history point with a ctrl + left click.
    If you have a history, it will try to collect the details from the history. but if you don't any history on the model. it will collect the mesh detail as is from the mesh.
    This is why when you restart ZBrush, - because it doesn't have a history on the mesh it. suddenly seems to work fine.
    others explained here in detail.
