I converted a 3/8" spindle gouge about a year ago and like you say, it's great. I'm just waiting for my 1/4" to become available...

Mike, a couple of things about this tool: 1. You kan keep sharpening the home made tool, whereas the purchased is not so easy to sharpen. 2. Another point is that if you use a deep fluted U-shaped bowl gouge, you can get the beads closer to semi-circular in shape.

I do like the 3/8 beads. Only a few months into turning, I don't have 'Extra/old' tools to modify. I will have to be on the lookout for some second hand, to try it out. Thanks Mike.

Now that's clever, and you'll never loose the profile because it's a flute. I also prefer 'honeycombe' beading, with tight beads and relatively shallow. If only I had a grinder! Robert Sorby has an Easybeader tool with a curved V shaped profile which makes nice tight beading. Something to think about for future projects, thanks!

Thank you for watching Julius. Not too effective as a captive ring tool as the point doesn't come around enough, but the dedicated captive ring tool with the double bevel is very effective,.

I like the center 3 beads as well, the first ones was to shallow in my opinion, and the last 3 was way to deep, also it look like a smoother cut as well, and is less sanding. Great video Mike and diy shop tools are great....have a great week

Very interesting new tool. What happens if you invert the tool with the flute upward. I'm guessing a lot of tear out kind of like the bought tool. I'll be looking for some old spindle gouges for sale. Thanks for posting this one.

Great video, Mike! I've been wanting to pick up a beading tool. It would be cheaper to buy a brand new inexpensive spindle gouge and convert it than buying a pre made beading tool. Great info, thanks for sharing!

Hi Mike thanks for the Video, Great idea,. One thing I've seen people do when showing something close up to the camera, they put their hand behind the item so the camera can auto focus..

Good stuff Mike. Isn't the Crown tool designed more for doing captive rings rather than beads?

Crown do a dedicated captive ring tool, which I also have, and its bevelled on both sides of a hook profile, so that you can form the ring and undercut from both the left and right. I did a video on it about four years ago.

Hi, have you used the D-Way deading tool. I am getting alot of tear out. Any suggestions? Thanks for the video.
I haven't used that particular make, but have a similar one. I have found I get best results by cutting on centre, lifting the tool slowly with little pressure, and always honing the face/edge regularly. Hope this helps.

Is it possible to get a view/diagram from the side of how the tool is presented to the wood?
For some reason I feel like I'm not getting it quite right.
I do show the presentation in the close ups while forming the three sets of beads, maybe you missed that part.

if you play around with the angle, and grind a relief on each side it should, with a little practice, work out OK for you mate.

Massive difference between them isn't there Mike. I had made two ring gouges from old large Allen keys. They didn't do a bad job but not made for the same reason you had, hiding a joint. When I get back to the lathe again I will see if the old keys could be adjusted on the grinder....might leave one as is.... cheers my friend 👍🏼😊
Just remembered I also made a captive ring gouge from another Allen key..that worked well too 👍🏼

Could you not reshape the store bought beading tool?
It's possible, but you don't have a chance to fiddle about too much to get it right, as the profile cannot be easily restored. The benefit of the gouge is that the flute allows you to try different grinds, to see what works best for you. Thanks for the suggestion though John, and for commenting.

Bearing in mind I know next to ' naff all ' about wood turning, how about getting some stainless steel pipe to the width required for a bead, drill a vertical hole [ now maybe you have 2 pcs ] and then shape to desired angle ..? .. sorry, just thinking aloud.Good vid anyhow.
Hi Brian, that could work, but I have no stainless pipe, but I did have a couple of worn down gouges ;)

great info mate and thanks, I have some old spindle gouges, those cheapish ones that come in a set that i picked up before I even had a lathe , just collecting dust in a draw, Im the same rather than throw them i kept them incase that "one day" actually comes :)

If you want to buy beading tools check out D-way tools, Dave makes excellent turning tools and has a 5 piece set of beading tools plus a teardrop shaped detail tool. I bought his full set and love them. They make precise beading fast and easy.
Dave has a detailed video on TH-cam about them.
