  • Using the Kel-McNaughton system to get more than one bowl out of a log half. The inner bowls are smaller, but are of more value than shavings on the compost pile.
This is my way of doing this process and is not the only way of coring, much less the only way to use this system. This video is not meant for instruction or education. This video is a record of my journey and a demonstration of how I do things. Please, if there is anything I do that does not feel safe or causes to feel nervous, don’t do it. You take responsibility of your own actions.

I am very new to the world of woodturning and mainly know it from youtube videos but this is the first time I saw using one log for more than one time. Clearly you need a special tool but it is possible. Thank you for taking time to show it.

Yes it does take a special tool. To my knowledge there are only 3 companies that make such a system.

@@DougMilleratWoodSpunRound I did listen to your explanation, I also agree that all 3 pieces were useful even the first one which was the smallest. I am new to this so I am soaking all the knowledge I can:)

It was a really big tree. I can probably cut 3-4 more blocks as large as this one was. Thanks for watching and responding.

Good idea and I also wondered about face shield. I like that you don't waste all the beautiful wood. It looks hard tho. Listening to you speak, I am not surprised to hear you're a minister! Thanks for sharing your creativity with me again. Stay safe, Vickie

+Dean's Woodworking thank you. I hope to do another coring video soon that is a good bit better. Want to represent the tool well.

Bruce, it’s a lot of work but can bring in $’s instead of ending up on the floor. Thanks for watching.

Thanks for the demo, Doug! I recently got the McNaughton system for the flexibility, but have only used it once - it was a little jarring, literally. Glad to see that you were able to do it smoothly - gives me hope that I'll figure it out! Great video!

Thanks for watching Chad. I believe the greatest secret is to hold the back of the handle up all the time. Message me if you have other questions.

Great job. I know we don’t use the word “but”, but I caught you without safety glasses and face shield. See you on Wednesday.

Correct. While coring I am not at the side of the wood. So I’m out of the line of fire. No excuse though, I should have had my shield on. It is tough when doing video. I can do the up and down thing, but it really does get to be a pain. Thanks for watching.

Thank you Amie. Absolutely. All 6 blanks will be turned, I hope all on camera. But at least one of the large blanks will be on camera for sure.
