It’s another Thursday trip report... here’s one I took back in January. Don’t forget to follow me on Twitter @pauls_trips where I discuss more about my upcoming plans... Here’s an explainer article about your rights when you’re delayed in the European Union: www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/holidays/article-2271213/How-claim-EU-flight-delay-compensation-EC-261-2004.html Have you ever had a long delay? What was it like?
I've had two issues involving long delay/cancellation. However, both occurred around ten years ago. This was on the NCL-SOU route operated by Flybe. They cancelled the last flight of the day NCL-SOU because of adverse weather (fog) at Southampton Airport, which was closed. I was rebooked on the same flight 24 hours later and had to spend an extra day at my parents house, so not too bad. On the other occasion, they cancelled the early afternoon flight SOU-NCL because of a tech problem. Everyone on the flight was given a £5 food voucher, which was fair enough, but having to spend the next 6 hours in Southampton's tiny departures area until the next flight left was a bit of an ordeal.
One of the best delays we ever had was when we went to Orlando for 2wks then a wk in the Bahamas,we came back to Orlando airport to fly back to Manchester and I jokingly said I wished we could have a delay as we didn’t want to go home.We get to the check in desk to be told the plane had a major problem and we wouldn’t be flying for at least 24 hrs.Hooray!! They took all 300+ of us to a fancy hotel ,champagne on arrival, gorgeous hotel room,$30 each for food, including our 5 yr old daughter( this was late 80’s so that went a long way), free phone calls to home ,next day they took us all by coach to one of those themed meals with free drinks and entertainment then back to airport for flight home.We loved that delay!,
We had something like that last year. Our flight was cancelled so the airline provided accommodation and expenses for 24 hrs. The fact that it was on the Greek island of Zakynthos in a top resort softened the 'disappointment'... ;)
RJ/146... superb aircraft, vastly underrated, STOL performance which is great when ATC screw the departure and you have to take-off fast. That being said, great report. My only severe delay was when an AA 767 went technical in MAN before departure. American were brilliant in handling that. A BA737 suddenly appeared, flew us to Heathrow where we were shoe-horned into a 747 and arrived in O'Hare 3 hrs down and had obviously missed our connection to SFO. But AA put us on the last flight of the day and "upgraded" us to 1st class service but in economy. One of my best flights ever. We finally arrived about 7 hours down on our original schedule but comfortable and happy and unexpectedly having had the experience of approaching San Francisco at night which was truly spectacular.
I do love those jets. I flew Air Bhutan KTM - DEL on one in 1990. Due to a pilot strike, we were lined up on the tarmac and had to run to the plane and get a seat, first come first served. They were the days of real air travel...
Hi Paul. I think your trip reports are excellent. I've watched a lot of different reports from other providers and they don't come close to yours. When you include your voice overs it makes a huge difference. Honestly, if you remember the BBC programme 'Holiday' you would have made a brilliant presenter!. You are very professional and I enjoy listening to and watching your reports every evening. Keep up the great work Paul 😁
Hi Paul! You probably don't get messages like this very often, but I wanted to say a huge "Thank You!"I have, for the first time in my life, been laid-up with a slipped disc for two days. Your videos have been so interesting and have brought relief from the otherwise boredom of lying in bed non-stop.I used to work for VAA and have always been a huge fan of transportation. I came across your videos a few days back when looking at airline reviews and have watched many of your videos since then.My back is getting better and I have subscribed to your channel. With thanks again for your excellent videos!Warmest wishesJon
2 hours is nothing I got delayed at Heathrow Terminal 3 for 10 hours. But it was one of those it will be fixed in 45 minutes. We don't have the part it'll be an extra 45 minutes. The flight was meant to leave at 10ish and at midday it was announced that the flight had been delayed till 8:00pm. In 2014 I was taking my parents to the Gulf Coast in Florida for two weeks. They live in Aberdeen and when we got there the flight had been cancelled. So we queued for 7 hours and 30 minutes until we were rebooked onto a flight via Atlanta (this was at the height of the Ebola crisis so we wanted to stay well away from Atlanta). Anyway we get airside only to be told there is bad weather at Heathrow and so are being delayed by an additional hour. 8 hours and 30 minutes after we were meant to be flying to London we finally took off. A normal flight from Aberdeen to London is between an hour and an hour and a half. This flight took 2 hours because we missed our landing slot at Heathrow and had to wait for another. So when we finally got to Heathrow we had to queue for an additional 2 hours before we were rebooked onto the same flight we were meant to get just a day later. Both of these flights were with BA so guess who I blame😠 And I've also caused a flight to be diverted to Newfoundland because my Appendix burst while I was on my way to New York. Oops!
BA are terrible. Worst airline for cancellations now Monarch are gone. Spent a whole day sitting at Grenoble airport while they tried to get engineers to fix our plane and then ended up traveling to Geneva because we were told we might not get back the next day. Worst of all BA sent a TOTALLY EMPTY plane back to Gatwick (Where we were flying too) an hour after we were deboarded due to the fault. The plane was exactly the same as ours and only going empty because there was one more charter too Grenoble than back
lol, do you like snow? I'm from Canada snow is a way of life here...the only time I really hate snow is when they haven't plowed the sidewalks...Snow can really beautiful and super fun to play in 😁
Lovely report as always! I went on Widerøes brand new Embraer E190-E2 last night, between Bergen and Bodø. They are planning on adding 2 more, and start flying to Hamburg and Munich. If you ever get the time, I would highly recommend taking a trip with it! I know you like the CS-series, you will deffo love the E2! I'm uploading a tripreport later this evening👌
I love the snow, and it’s sure beautiful flying into pdx when it’s just snowed .. if you’re ever back? Try southern oregon.. it’s a totally different experience..
Good to see they sorted out the connection. I presume this only happens if it's a through ticket on same airline or codeshare? For me, the break up of the Flybe-Loganair alliance, and the subsequent axing of some routes by Flybe's new partner Eastern, has meant that for some routes I flew regularly in the past, I would now have to risk two separate tickets. Especially for rural Scottish flights, that seems a risk. I've never missed a connection yet - the nearest was making a connection onto Sydney to London at last minute (and bags did too) after a delay out of Christchurch - all with same airline.
A bit of odd trivia to consider. The engines for this RJ85 came from the US Air Force attack aircraft competition which resulted in the development of the Fairchild A-10 Thunderbolt II or Warthog. It was in competition with Northrop YA-9 which was powered by two turbofan engines. The YA-9 obviously lost the competition but the engine manufacturer, AVCO Lycoming, used the experience to win the engine award for the British Aerospace BAE-146 (which is essentially the same aircraft as the AVRO RJ85) in the late 70s.
Nice to have you back @ helm on the Flight Trip Report Front, Paul 👍🏻 1 out of 150 flights without a Serious delay, is pretty damn good by any standards 😉
I was delayed 12 hrs at JSY due to fog at our destination GSY many years ago before the regulations re compensation were active . All we were offered was a pillow and a chair for the night . Similarly I was delayed in MEL about 2 yrs ago , again weather related which meant an overnight stay at the airport as my destination SYD was under a night time curfew , we were offered absolutely nothing ! .. BTW it looked treacherous underfoot at Bromma .. Happy travels and love and look forward to your great videos ..
I experienced a very unusual delay on my flight to my winter home in Myrtle Beach. Not sure how many here are familiar with how planes warm up to prepare to fly, but in order to warm up for takeoff, planes have backep engines that fire up to warm up the main engines so that they will fire up and run the plane. Once the main engines are warm enough to fire up and take over, the backup engines will shut off. The plane I was flying out on could not fire its backup engines, and there was not another plane to spare, so what had to be done was: a very large generator was brought out to warm each main engine one at a time, the pilot would fire that engine for a period of time to get it good and warm, then shut it back down while the generator was pulled away and moved to the other engine. Once that engine was warmed, it was fired up and run. It was then shut back down so the ground crew could pull the generator away, then immediately fired back up. The generator was returned to the feft engine for just a gew more minutes to rewarm it, the engine refired, shut down, the generator pulled away, and the engine immediately refired. It was kind of complicated, and we were delayed over an hour, but it did work, and they made certain to re-de-ice the plane, and we were able to take off. Fortunately, as I'd had a rather long takeover in Atlanta, I didn't have to sit about the airport long at all. They wheeled me on to my connection, and as soon as everyone was buckled in, we pulled away from the jetway and left.
Worst delay I've had was a few years ago travelling from Palma de Mallorca. My Thomas Cook flight was supposed to depart at about 11:30am if I recall correctly, however thunder and lightning meant that lightning had struck the aircraft that I was supposed to be boarding, it did land at Palma de Mallorca but the issues weren't able to be solved. This led to a delay of about 9 hours with a Titan Airways chartered flight eventually taking us back to Manchester Airport at approx 8:30pm. I must say it was truly one of the worst customer service experiences I've ever had with Thomas Cook staff giving absolutely no updates on the situation and just throwing food vouchers at us every hour or so. I did end up claiming when I returned home and received the full fare back which was a good result😁
I don't mind the snow. I remember flying NCL- SOU on Flybe and taking off into a blizzard once, but the flight itself was fine (and on a Q400 as well!)
Hard to blame airlines for weather issues, glad you took it in stride. At least the EU has the US beat on helping travelers when there are delays. Enjoyed the report, thank you for posting.
A really good airframe, that. Sad that we don't make them like that, any more. And that's a result - getting an airline that does what it's supposed to without a serious kicking is becoming a Rare Thing. Top Marks to both companies for making the effort. Also, you get Top Marks, too, for linking the site that explains all these things. I wonder when international rail travelers will have similar protection? Thanks, Paul. You did a great report, and thanks for putting yourself out for us.
That is going to be very useful. Herself and I are planning to get to Bodo, in Norway, from a market town in Norfolk, entirely by rail/ train ferry. It's a way of travel that we enjoy enormously, and the Trondheim-Bodo trip was the first "trip report" or TH-cam video I ever saw.
This aircraft was known as the BAE 146 in the US. I flew it from BUR to SFO decades ago on PSA. It was very noisy on the ground. It was quickly replaced by MD 80's due to engine maintenance issues on the 146.
The 146 is actually the predecessor aircraft to the RJ series. The 146 was re-engined and had an upgrade to the avionics and then was marketed as the Avro RJ Series. They look just about identical though.
Regarding delays, I had a 12 hour delay from Manchester to Reykjavík with IcelandAir - Also weather-related. They booked the people who were meant to be flying into a hotel in central Manchester, lunch and dinner included. They also provided free food on the flight for no extra cost due to the delay.
Will Martin I don’t know what I’d do in that situation as I only live 10 minutes drive from Manchester airport. I think I’d prefer to just go home and come back 10/11 hours later than be put in a hotel. Interesting scenario to think about.
Be interested to see the Aer Lingus service from BHX to JFK which has a short connect in Dublin. It seems pretty good cost wise plus you get pre-clearance in Dublin .
Pre-clearance in DUB is fantastic. I went LHR-DUB-ORD last year and managed to get through pre-clearance, including a short visit to secondary processing, within 20 minutes of arrival.
Shame about the Delays, I'm not really much of an RJ85 fan, nice that is different, but I don't really enjoy flying on them. Great report as always Paul.
Cheers James - they’ve been replaced mostly by Embraers and CSeries planes which are both pretty awesome to be honest. Not sure I will get many opportunities to fly an RJ after this...
How interesting, your first video containing a failed connection is posted the same week I had my first failed connection. Although Lufthansa were not proactive. They announced on board the inbound we had been rebooked and emailed us, but no one in sight. We downloaded our new boarding passes as instructed by cabin crew on the inbound, but if my friend hadn’t have visited an automated kiosk because he wanted a paper one, we’d never have known we were supposed to be given a food voucher, which the kiosk automatically printed with my friends boarding pass. Needless to say all 5 of us reprinted all our passes.
Howdy Paul, so glad you’re back! Another tip, top post, my friend! Side note: I channeled your frustration today when I found myself standing on a 45F (7.2 Celsius) jet bridge after queuing to board a flight in Denver, CO to LA. Ugh 😡 I believe a petition for $$$ back to the pax who have to wait in these type of conditions, may just inspire the airlines to rethink their boarding strategies in cold weather! Yeah right, haha 🤣 Cheers mate, see you in the skies! ✈️
for the question whether i like snow or not: I've never seen snow in my life :'( the downside of living in Lima, Perú (on the other side, we never have delays for weather here at LIM airport)
I was due to fly a SJ100 with Cityjet BHX-BRU and it's was cancelled. Was gutted I really wanted to try the aircraft. Ended up routing through Zurich on a Swiss ERJ190 which was fine but not the new experience I'd hoped. Presume Cityjet are having issues with these aircraft
I am very impressed with your videos. As an aspiring trip reporter and filmmaker I am curious about equipment used in making aviation trip reports. Can you tell me what camera you use for window shots?
Paul Williams All the shots in my videos are filmed on a Panasonic LUMIX DMC LX-15 except the wide angle action shots and some window shots filmed on a GoPro Hero Session 4.
back in late 80s we were delayed plane should have left at 8pm but left 10 am next day we rang Rimini 2hrs before thay told us it's delayed but keep ringing every hour at 11pm thay told us be at airport at 7am all we got was a voucher for continental breakfast still don't know why the delay
I know how delays feel. In December of 2014 I had to return something my mom bought from Michael's and being I also later that night had dinner out with my God Parents I decided to do a Metra Trip on The Union Pacific West Line to Elburn and back to Chicago. I got to Elburn alright but I lost track of time and I missed the inbound trip back to Chicago so I had to wait until the next Metra Union Pacific West Line Train came. When I got on board the train and we departed for Chicago during the trip we got delayed by freight trains and by the time we reached Chicago I had a very little time to get from the platform where I got off to the video screen showing the platform where the Union Pacific North Line which I needed was and get to it and get on board before it departed. I had around 5 minutes before I missed the train I wanted. I did managed to get it but I was exhausted from literally running to reach the train.
What a wierd way to board. I'm talking about the fact that after checking the ticket at the gate, you had to go a lot OUTSIDE to your stand. Also, you could have went to any plane that was at the airport. Of course you wouldn't be able to board it since the crew wouldn't let you in without a ticket, but still.
I was flying back from Ottawa, Ontario on United, due to weathet, plane was delayed at Washington Dulles. United rep sends me to Air Canada, boarding passes, and 25 dollar food voucher. Get flown to Pearson, where plane is delayed due to weather (also stuck...at Dulles). Go to AC rep, she asks me about what united gave me (25 voucher), she said if United gave me 25, she will give me $26. Hours and hours and hours later, i get home, but flying major airlines can have its perks. Fly Spirit or Allegiant and they could hold you hostage for hours, wreck the plane and sell your luggage, and not even give you an 'oops, our mistake'
It’s another Thursday trip report... here’s one I took back in January. Don’t forget to follow me on Twitter @pauls_trips where I discuss more about my upcoming plans...

what is the app called?
Tell me about it, with American, Delta, and US Airways! US Airways made it right, as did AA, while DL did nothing.

We had something like that last year. Our flight was cancelled so the airline provided accommodation and expenses for 24 hrs. The fact that it was on the Greek island of Zakynthos in a top resort softened the 'disappointment'... ;)
Kudos to the airline. Not many would be so kind

Davin Crawford that was 2 years ago. I'm fine now

Hey I flew that exact plane once on vacation. I remember that tail number.
Great video Paul! Great to see the Avro Rjs still flying!
Another great travel report Paul! ✈
Keep 'em coming! 😀👍
Nothing like a bit of adventure. Thanks again Paul.
Nice to have you back @ helm on the Flight Trip Report Front, Paul 👍🏻 1 out of 150 flights without a Serious delay, is pretty damn good by any standards 😉
New subbie, I really like how detailed your trip reports are !

Cinnamon things?
I love the old RJs or Jumbolinos how we call them in switzerland. It was a sad day when Swiss retired them.

Hard to blame airlines for weather issues, glad you took it in stride. At least the EU has the US beat on helping travelers when there are delays. Enjoyed the report, thank you for posting.
Unless you're flying with Ryanair, who seem to think the rules don't apply to them.
Great review.....sorry you got screwed and had to wait....but hey....any trip that gets you there is a great trip.
I'm watching this four years after filming. I live in the US. Who is Harry Hill? I'll try and Google the answer. Love your trips.
Liking the new logo in the opening. It pops quite nicely.

There are similar (but not the same) regulations for European cross border rail travel. Google “CIV rules Europe”.

You change planes in DUB and go through US immigration pre-clearance checks before you board the transatlantic aircraft.
Jimuk07 never said it was a direct flight, rather a "short connect in Dublin".
You should do Southend-Chateauroux! According to the Southend airport departures the route went ahead as planned today
The Avro seems as aerodynamic as a boulder, and yet it performs extremely well.
This must have been like more than a month ago. Friday last week we had 23 C and shorts + BBQ was on (no snow) Loads of Bromma content btw :)
I'm curious to see what app you are using when checking the speed of the aircraft.
Ty paul. I love the snow but just from afar.lol thats why i live n florida
13:02 nice RwandAir there in the backround
link to the museum @10:45, for those interested:

How interesting, your first video containing a failed connection is posted the same week I had my first failed connection.
Although Lufthansa were not proactive. They announced on board the inbound we had been rebooked and emailed us, but no one in sight. We downloaded our new boarding passes as instructed by cabin crew on the inbound, but if my friend hadn’t have visited an automated kiosk because he wanted a paper one, we’d never have known we were supposed to be given a food voucher, which the kiosk automatically printed with my friends boarding pass.
Needless to say all 5 of us reprinted all our passes.
Delays happen, but you handled it very well.
lol @ Harry Hill !!!!
I'm going to miss when the Avros are gone, such unique little beasts.
Was the jet at 6:04 on finals without its landing gear down?
You seem to be in Sweden very much, any connections/work over here? Well, Välkommen till Stockholm! :)
nice job on another video report, Paul. Any reason why you didn't fly direct from Stockholm to London?
Howdy Paul, so glad you’re back! Another tip, top post, my friend!
Side note: I channeled your frustration today when I found myself standing on a 45F (7.2 Celsius) jet bridge after queuing to board a flight in Denver, CO to LA. Ugh 😡
I believe a petition for $$$ back to the pax who have to wait in these type of conditions, may just inspire the airlines to rethink their boarding strategies in cold weather! Yeah right, haha 🤣
Cheers mate, see you in the skies! ✈️
Been waiting for this all day, good video Paul 👍
Fantastic shots!
Great review once again Paul exelaint please keep up the good work
Liking the Russell Crowe Gladiator look on you. Suits you Paul.
"Good for wiping off everything but your smile" ....
The delays will do that for you.
Never flown on one of the beautiful RJ’s. I really would like to before they’re all gone.
Great trip report! Do you have a camera mounted to the window in-flight or is it freehand?
I thought you always touched fuselage during boarding, not in this video!
Can you do a British Airways 787 or 777 or 747 business class trip report? I’d like to see your review
for the question whether i like snow or not: I've never seen snow in my life :'( the downside of living in Lima, Perú (on the other side, we never have delays for weather here at LIM airport)
Whats the GPS app that you were using to track your location in the sky? I'd love to do something similar for my upcoming transatlantic flight.
Mmmmft flightradar24
Sorry for you - and thanks for the trip report nevertheless!
It's a pity you don't get the 250€ (400€? not sure about the distance)....
@Paul Why do you always go down the very last row? For photo ops? Sorry if you have answered that before
Thanks!🌷🌷🌷
Great vid...What was the app you were using
I was due to fly a SJ100 with Cityjet BHX-BRU and it's was cancelled. Was gutted I really wanted to try the aircraft. Ended up routing through Zurich on a Swiss ERJ190 which was fine but not the new experience I'd hoped. Presume Cityjet are having issues with these aircraft
Gonna be a great video I already know it pal
Paul, what is that app you use on the phone to track incoming flights and the GPS thing that showed speed?
I hate snow. I love flip flops and palm trees.btw. Have I watched any of my cruise videos yet Paul?
Would have loved to have seen a SSJ, but the Avro was cool iron too.
The RJ85 looks like a BAE146, is there a connection?
What is that app called that you use to measure the airspeed?
I did managed to get it but I was exhausted from literally running to reach the train.
feel like the delay comp thing will be the new PPI scandle
I think sukhoi is having problems with the super jet 100 tail ensambling... Interjet stops 11 sukhoi 100 in mexico
Hi.have you calculated your total air miles to date?
The snow and ice could have been cleared to make it safer for the passengers to walk.
Looks a little cold!!
You should take the X2000 service to Denmark then go from there to make sure no delays : )
What a wierd way to board. I'm talking about the fact that after checking the ticket at the gate, you had to go a lot OUTSIDE to your stand. Also, you could have went to any plane that was at the airport. Of course you wouldn't be able to board it since the crew wouldn't let you in without a ticket, but still.
love your nissan micra
What a strange boarding set up. It's like walking into a large Tesco store.
I really dislike those airports like Frankfurt, Vienna, etc that make you walk through a store to get to the gates. This one also seems to do that.
Is this the same as a 146
It’s probably very cold at Brrrrrrrromma Airport...
Yes, Harry Hill does get around, and I understand that his food is better than Blumenthal's too!!)))
Homemade ones are even better, especially at christmas
Is this the aircraft flying with 5 APUs?
Nice video
