This is a needed discussion. I used to pray the rosary everyday but I’ve been so guilted into doing it BEST and correctly and slowest, etc that I’ve given it up. I’ve been begging Our Lady to help me find my way back…and here is this video. God heard our prayers. He KNOOOOWS us just as we are-anxious, distracted, lazy. I just love Him and Our Lady MORE for helping me…directing me….leading me.
We all have difficulty from time to time. I’m sure even the most devout priests lapse a day or two from time to time. What helps me, is remembering that our lady asked us to pray it, in every apparition. It might sound silly. But, I remind myself, that I do it because my holy mother told me too. What also helps me, is that since getting enrolled in my scapula, I feel like I have a moral obligation to do it as well. Again, maybe silly, but I feel almost like I made her a promise, in that enrollment. A promise, I don’t want to break. Lastly, what also may help, is just watching it on video, and saying it along. Regina Angeloram does the rosary live every day, from father Corapi. May God continue to bless you. - Viva Cristo Rey!!, Ave Maria!!
Don't beat yourself up too much. Same thing happened to me. I use to pray the rosary straight. Didn't know the mysteries, the prayer after the decade, etc. Learned all of it, felt distant in prayer, and guilty for not liking it. Then one day, I had a talk with God and said, You know me! I don't like saying the Rosary this way. I'm not into it, so I'm going back to my old way. Suddenly, I realized that I like simplicity. A good old fashion prayer without the add ons works for me. Now, I carry my mother's rosary beads with me all the time. If I'm walking my dogs, I'll say a decade. Driving to work, I'll pray, bad day at work, I'll say a few Hail Mary's, I'll pray in Thanksgiving randomly. My point is that I'm very dependent on the Rosary now. I'm free and happy. My mother always told us, God hears All prayers. Don't move away from praying. We need to pray more today than ever before.
Me too! I used to say it even as I was raising 4 young kids (identical twins) as a family, sometimes a few times a day, then video after video over the years have been saying “don’t say it too fast” …pray it reverently “….”it has to be contemplative” ….”don’t just say it but listen”…etc. that I have not been too consistent due to its long list of rules required to say it that having a big family and all of its distractions I’m like forget about it and live daily feeling guilty even to the point of being resentful to the family. In conclusion , I just pray it now and I keep going even if the setting is not right! I pray it in the car, next to my screaming kids, 1 mystery at a time in between bbqing for the kids, a mystery here and there en route to the grocery store. Dads gotta do what a dads gotta do!
Now 80 years old, as a child I would pray rather quickly and be done in 15 minutes. My mind was quick, and there was lots to do in a day. Now, I actually enjoy getting a little lost in contemplating the mysteries, learning the lessons that are there to be learned, so that it will be 20- 30 minutes of prayer. I believe prayer is not just time spent, but time well spent. And little children can learn to love prayer if too many conditions aren't imposed on them.
Amen! It seems to me that people's attention span is becoming shorter and shorter by the day. Thirty minutes of prayer per day is not too much to ask for.
I'm astonished at this discussion. I've just finished saying my daily rosary and found difficulty today with attending to the prayer and the meditation. At the end of the Rosary I said a silent prayer acknowledging my difficulty with attention. I tuned into TH-cam and there's Pints with Aquinas discussing the very thing I had been thinking about.
You’re guardian Angel is very sensitive to your prayers and needs. What a beautiful intercession from them. Smile about this and give thanks. All glory to God!
Happens all the time. Have a question / problem. Happen across the solution reading etc… While being careful to avoid over analyzing and superstition I think it’s a little reassuring comfort sent our way. Like Someone saying “I’m in charge and I got this.”
Yes me tooo! I didn’t know this. Any pamphlet I picked up as a kid till now always had the creed, the our father and there Hail Marys and glory be and then the mysteries, and Fatima prayers in between etc etc I love that is is even more simple!
When my son was 4 he surprised me by wanting to pray the whole rosary with me! “You want to pray the WHOLE rosary?” I asked him looking at him with surprise as he snuggled next to me on the couch. “Um-hm” he smiled! Ok! So we did!
A religious sister visited us for Mass last week and she wanted to say the rosary afterwards. At the end of each decade she would say the Fatima prayer, "O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell; lead all souls to heaven especially those who are in most need of. Your mercy" I think I will add it to my daily rosary.
That is always how I've heard and prayed the rosary. It is a beautiful little prayer and the whole rosary is still only 10 or 12 minutes depending on how fast you speak :)
We prayed the rosary everyday growing up. My dad would have us sit at the table at 7:00 pm. My mother was working evenings. He would lead the four of us, and I would read the mysteries. Once done, we would go to bed. At the time, we used “dread” it as children. Now, coming back into my catholic faith, I would love to restart that tradition with my daughter.
I open with the Creed on the cross, follow with Our Father, the 3 Hail Mary's, Glory Be, the Fatima prayer and then begin with the first mystery, repeat with the Fatima prayer after each decade and close with the Hail Holy Queen. I do the full rosary in one go and found that it really only takes me about 13 -15 minutes. I do 4 rosaries (all mysteries) each day - well there is the odd day when there is an interruption to my day but it has to be significant. I find on days when I have to work at the office I'll crave some time with the rosary and go down into the underground parking arcade and sit in my car to pray an entire rosary - it's a fantastic break from all the noise and nonsense of work and people.
I feel like the Rosary should be prayed slowly, because it truly enters into the meditative nature of it, and I feel like it goes with breathing better too, I feel like I'm trying to keep up with my breath when people pray it fast. It ends up taking me about 50 minutes but it always feels more worthwhile and like I was truly in it.
Dominicans are always a treat to listen to. They clearly have dedicated their lives to drawing closer to God and understanding His revealed truths, using their intellect and reason.
I love them. Always have. I wanted to go to a Dominican high school but it wasn't to be. However, my ex is a Byzantine Catholic so we had to get married in that rite. My curmudgenly old pastor would not permit it. He acknowledged it is Canon but refused. The wedding ceremony is not a liturgy but is sung. My ex was from NYC and my mom knew that St. Vincent Ferrer Church was known for their music. We approached them and those dear Dominican fathers were so thrilled that the choir learned the whole rite in four parts. It was a gorgeous ceremony. What made it super special was that it was one time when my mother stepped away from her malignant narcissism and did something meaningful for me.
I have to ask, Nathalie why you felt it necessary to trample my lovely story about the Dominicans with your self-righteous scolding of a 76 year old woman? When you come up with a suitable word for the parties in an annulled marriage, let us know. P.s. annulment requires civil divorce too in the US to allow the parties to marry and to settle property and custody issues so yes, in the legal sense we are exes.
Thank you for this! We do have the 1962 Latin Missal and the St. Andrew's Missal and when I read the parts about the Rosary I was relieved to know that all the other stuff is optional. I always felt so guilty that I did not like participating in all the extras and thought that I was just a bad Catholic as opposed to my friends who liked adding in a lot of extra prayers, but now I don't. I love the Rosary now! -Kat
I grew up with a very devout and borderline fanatical Catholic mother. I’m still faithful today thanks to her influence, strife, and efforts in raising our family but this was a big problem growing up for us. She would always whenever she got a chance try and force more and more prayer into the family prayer time. We would often go 4 hours praying 8 rosaries or be praying litanies and also devotions on very regular occasions. There was never a moment where my siblings or I would get frustrated and argue with her to cut the prayer time down so that we could enjoy our leisure time or do important responsibilities like studying or homework. She never really understood how less could be more and stuck dogmatically with the whole “pray ceaselessly” idea by misinterpreting it as never-ending continuous verbal prayer. Now regrettably instead of having given us a passion and habit of regular prayer, most of us now dread it because of the relationship we grew up having with prayer.
But it's amazing and commendable you still have faith! I can imagine it's not easy. I had in a close family s person who was very devout but had kind of, hmm, autoritarian character. Was forcing us to pray too or go to church, but not such long hours. Today, I actually appreciate it because I've learned some things in the process. But at the time I really didn't like it, and it kept me away from the faith and anything related for a long time. Actually until I had a personal spiritual conversion experience. Oh and it also taught me what _not_ to do when trying to bring other to faith 😅. But today, after a few decades, I'malso thankful for many other also good this that person did or what I've learned in the process.
Wow. That sounds extremely tough. You've done very well to keep your faith through all that. That kind of religious upbringing almost certainly would have driven me away from the church. On a separate note, I have loads of sympathy for your mother, too. What you describe is someone who struggles with extreme scrupulosity. Scrupulosity is the combination of OCD with a strong faith. I discovered just how emotionally painful, all consuming, and debilitating this can be as my youngest child struggled with scrupulosity in her early teens. We sought out expert medical care to help her. One day, I was sitting with her in this doctor's office as she was describing why she didn't go to mass. The thought of being in the presence of Jesus who is all pure with her imperfections and impurities was excruciatingly agonizing for her. And the thought of receiving the Eucharist felt to her like she was defiling Jesus because she was so acutely aware of her own imperfections. She felt like her attendance at mass and reception of the host only brought more sadness and suffering to Jesus. In short, she saw herself as never good enough to receive the Eucharist or even attend mass. It was so hard to get her to go with us every Sunday. Yet her love for Jesus was so real and authentic. It hurt me as her father to see such compulsive thoughts keep her from practicing her faith as she would have liked. Fortunately, the medical professionals were able to lessen the effects of her OCD and she was able to return to weekly mass without the intrusive thoughts. Prayers and blessings to you and your loved ones.
When I first converted 20 years ago I had the 'on fire, gonna do it ALL' mentality and that included the rosary - every time I prayed with different groups and heard a new and different prayer that had been tacked on at the beginning, middle, or end I had to learn it and add it to my personal recitation.... And then when I would feel fatigue during prayer I'd end up getting anxiety over even*thinking* of dropping some of those extra prayers to cut down my time..."How can you call yourself pious if you want to shorten prayer time?? How dare you?".... Luckily I realized what I was doing to myself and knew it was not a good, so I cut out all the 'extras' and went back to praying a simple, basic, rosary
Weldone my friend, I’m sure I heard somewhere that the devil can tempt you to put this type of strain on yourself i.e being too scrupulous in your religious life which in turn will cause you too burn yourself out making you feel tired and resentful of prayer and religious life making you fall away and lose faith because of the stress and strain you have put upon yourself, godbless you x
@@heyitsedz1785I think the modernists’ plan, from the beginning, was always to distract from the simple realities that God gave us. God uses children as a good example for simple faith. ♥️🙏🏼☦️
Yea, and the devil tempts us to take shortcuts and not to be so zealous in our prayer. Sometimes prayer is difficult but our persistence proves our love. It is a test.
Hi. My hubby likes all the extra prayers. I would be happy with the basic Rosary. But on the days my mind resembles the "wild horses" of St Teresa of Avila, I have learned to apologise quickly and carry on 🙂 If one's intentions are good, I believe even a poorly prayed Rosary has to be pleasing to Our Lady - so long as we truly wish to be sincere.
I know what you're saying. If I'm saying the rosary with my family then it's straight down the line,15 minutes. However when I'm saying the rosary on my own I like to say it as a contemplative prayer. I slow right down and soak it up. When my heart is touched by a mystery i just stop there and meditate on that. So it all depends on when and who you're praying with. If im heading into work ill say it straight as i want to finish it before I'm distracted at work.
I’ve the same thinking as you, namely, saying it contemplatively, but only when I’m alone. Praying the rosary should be a joyful experience and moment. If it becomes a dread, then we need to re-examine our hearts.
I love praying a scriptural Rosary. Definitely a longer version to pray but no wondering mind as each Hail Mary has a Bible scripture that focuses on the mystery being prayed.
I add intentions at every mystery; particularly for our family members in most need of our Lord's mercy, sometimes for the forgiveness of our sins, and our children's vocations, as to make it a strategic prayer class to our children now almost adults. I find it a practical way to break the monotony of a prescribed prayer and refresh my devotion at every mistery.
Love it! I do that too - I find often as I pray an important issue related to the intention that has been bothering me or something I had observed but didn't think much of at the time is called to mind at an event in the mystery that correlates. It either brings me comfort, a new perspective or an idea on how to handle it.
I do this sometimes but in my head as Hubby and I pray. He is dyslectic, always found praying difficult and is thrown off track and made miserable by changes. I used to try sometimes to get him to see one can change the " other prayers" by removing them if one is in a hurry or by reading Scripture verses to help with the meditations but it caused fights! Not good. So I do what makes him happy. Usually feel at peace.
I love praying my rosary. But truly, there are days lately when I feel so guilty for my wandering mind, or the level of contemplation I have achieved on a particular day, or that I fell asleep trying to meditate on the mysteries devoutly. The Holy Spirit was really refreshing our souls on your channel today. Praise God for this episode, and for both of you. I have such a feeling of peace right now about this beautiful devotion to Our Lady....🙏
And i thought i was the only one, earlier today for first time i stopped in the middle of rosary and could not continue i was just overwhelmed with worries and all kind of thoughts i could not focus for 10 seconds on rosary. I even muttered something like... Whats the point of even trying
One of the tricks of reigning a wandering, tree limb grabbing, monkey mind, is to repeat the Mystery, midway, after the first five beads, and continue. It refocuses the mind right back to the Mystery. Reading a short meditation after announcing the Mystery, also aids in the process of visualization. Which is what many, who recite the Rosary in a mechanical fashion, fail to do. To say the Rosay, is to be a present witness to the life of Christ.
My priest made the rosary super simple for me because I am new to the rosary. I basically start with a personal prayer at the cross , then every part of the rope with no Bead I do the Jesus prayer , every single bead I do the our father . And every bead that is in group I do the Hail Mary. It’s work very well for me ! It’s easy for me to do since I am new to Catholicism and the rosary and it allows me to get close to God and practice prayer while I learn the official way
Fr Gregory is a wonderful man who is so articulate and holy yet down to earth. Along with Matt Fradd, I could listen to these holy gentlemen for endless hours!
Thanks for addressing this! As a priest, I have said the same thing to some of my very pious pre-Mass rosary groups. sometimes the added prayers after the rosary are longer than the rosary itself. I have to gently remind them that Mass is about to begin and sometimes it’s ok to just pray the rosary without all the accretions, especially in groups. Add as much as you want in your private prayer at home.
If mass is starting late due to the Rosary, start the Rosary earlier. Don’t make it shorter. Prayer is not a waste of time! It is the Lord’s work. Far too often, we try to rush through prayer to do something else less important. This applies to priests, who should be setting the highest of examples, rather than asking parishioners to lessen their devotions in the name of improving the priest’s schedule. I’m not saying you do any of these things specifically, but they definitely happen among priests. I see a lot of lessening of the faith, even here on TH-cam.
Or once it's time for Mass, the bell be rung and Mass starts regardless of if the rosary is finished or not. That way the congregation is mindful of when they start the rosary to finish before Mass schedule. No biggie. We all need to be Prudential either Laity or Clergy.
@@ochem123 I don't know, if it's too long and too stretched out then it might deter many people other than the few. Especially on the weekdays, if the mass is half an hour long why would the rosary be longer?
@@joane24 People have free will to pray the Rosary as Our Lady asked or not. Follow the narrow path; wide is the road to perdition. Wear the Brown Scapular (enrolled); wear the purple scapular; hand out Green Scapulars; promulgate the Rosary; pray the Rosary; pray for the poor souls in purgatory; pray the Leonine Prayers; pray without ceasing; consecrate yourself to the Sacred Heart of Jesus; pray the Novena to the Holy Ghost; worship the Sacred Heart of Jesus; venerate the Immaculate Heart of Mary; pray the Divine Office; pray your morning prayers daily; pray your nightly prayers nightly; offer up all your pains and sorrows to God; Go forth and multiply. There are many things we could all do better; let’s not make it easier. God calls us to elevate ourselves. We reach down and pick the lowest up and rise them to their rightful place in heaven; we don’t wallow in the muck. Mortify your mind and you heart and your flesh; this world is but temporary. Heaven is forever.
@@ochem123Well firstly, Our Lady asked us to pray the Rosary. These additions are not bad, but they are still additions. I'm fairly sure our Blessed Mother would prefer we offer glory and praise to our Lord at mass. Don't forget that the rosary is a devotional. It supplements the mass. It puts you in the right state for mass. I agree that at the very least the prayer group should be earlier.
And I thought I was the only one! So glad to learn that there are others out there who dislike all the prayers added to the rosary, especially when it’s prayed in a group setting. To me, it becomes a turn-off and I find myself staying at home a little longer before heading to Mass just so I don’t have to sit through the group recitation of the Rosary before Mass.
I do exactly the same thing! The Rosary before the daily Mass at our parish has stretched to about a half hour with a half dozen prayers at the end. One is a very long "Prayer for Our Country" which essentially states that the US was founded as a theocracy, so I do not join in with that one. The Angelis is said after the Rosary, so I try to time my arrival for that.
Gosh, this opened up the rosary to me like never before. Thank you so much. The rosary has always seemed like such a chore to pray. I know it’s good, but I’ve never found much benefit from it. But after watching this, my wife and I prayed the Dominican rosary together (first time.) The quick opening to just orient our hearts and then jumping into the mysteries makes it so much more approachable. In addition, Fr. Pine’s advice to just place ourselves in the presence of the mystery, to call it to mind, and then say the prayers made me able to actually meditate on the mysteries more than ever before. This is truly remarkable. My wife and I are currently on pilgrimage to WYD in Lisbon. In the last week we’ve visited both Lourdes and Fatima, so this opening up of the rosary is so beautiful and timely. Thank you!
Can I just say this would be helpful for those compromised by disassociation (PTSD, ADHD umbrella) who come with an open heart but are limited by these means. Thanks 🙏
The executive function needed to pray the Rosary is challenging, sometimes I get distracted by trying to remember which bead I am on and also holding the Rosary trying to figure which side to start on and forgetting midway which Mystery I am on. I prefer to pray the Rosary with others but they add so many prayers that I can’t keep up so it’s been difficult for me to keep a consistent habit of praying the rosary. There have been instances where I feel oh this would be a great time to pray the rosary then I realized I don’t have all the mysteries memorized and I am sadden that I need to rely on my phone to be able to pray. It would be nice if there was helpful resource for those of us that need extra support. For instance I find it difficult to meditate on the Mysteries when I am saying the 10 Hail Mary’s because I focus more on making sure I articulate them correctly instead of actively contemplating the mystery themselves, which then feel defeats the purpose of praying the Rosary. How do I remember to keep the Mysteries fresh on my mind as I say the 10 Hail Mary’s, especially in a group setting where it feels like everything goes by quickly. I get frustrated when I can’t keep up, but I pray silently that I mean what everyone else is praying even if I don’t know all the words or struggle to keep up. I am also a very visual person, I would very much appreciate if the Rosary could start to incorporate visual elements like today is Tuesday we will be Meditating on the Sorrowful Mysteries and also have a visual aid of all 5 Mysteries and brief captions. This could maybe work in a classroom setting not sure how it would work in the chapel 🤔. Essentially my suggestion is to make the Rosary more interactive so that it’s easier to memorize and that people can actually look forward to praying the Holy Rosary. An analogy that comes to mind is when a person who has a hard time seeing is given glasses for the first time and now they feel more confident in their ability to see things with better clarity. They simply become overjoyed because this needed accommodation allowed them to be able to see at level needed to perform the given task.
I use rosary prayer card. After 5 months I need nothing of that sort. During the 5 months, I did school myself to memorise. I literally test myself how much I can remember and check how much I can retain meditation on the mysteries instead of the Hail Mary. Now, I know it’s all ok; however you meditate. He is just happy you are praying. Our Lady is also happy that we are praying. End of story. 🎉🎉🎉
I pray the rosary on my daily walk as it is free of distractions and other disruptions and can meditate on each mystery and how it might relate to my life at that moment. That changes depending on what's going on. Never had a problem praying the rosary but you have to ensure this isn't just some checklist you're flying through just to get it done. Not supposed to be a burden.
I agree with you. Many like to have human company for walk / jog - I understand it's partly motivation to not slack off, and I have other friends who use that walk time to "catch up" with friends by phone / earpiece. But I find that, by myself or with my dog, I can pray instead, and the Rosary is well-suited to this, because unscripted thoughts can soon become meandering daydreams. The Rosary imposes a structure. But each to his own I suppose, there is no one fixed way.
I found a website that actually breaks down each Hail Mary into ten different points of the mysteries. I find that especially helpful for me as a new convert. My college has a prayer room where I'd go to meditate even before I found Christ but the last time I was there I saw that they had two rosaries available for people to use. So I decided to pray the sorrowful mysteries while I waited for someone to pick me up (I was there for a weekly autism support group but I can't drive and my sister had fallen asleep), and I found that by the fifth mystery I was just weeping openly. To the point where I was almost embarrassed because I could hear the janitors vacuum over the lofi I had playing to drown it out and I was worried that they were going to come in and just see this man reading from his phone, clutching these beads, and just subbing!
I wonder if you are talking about a Carthusian rosary which has a mystery for each Hail Mary bead. One is not obligated to complete this type of rosary, but just go as far as you can.
@@sshealy1 Nope, It's Scriptural rosary that have one Bible verse for each Hail Mary. For example you will read 10 verses about Jesus pray in Getsemane and you should recite 1 Hail Mary every time you ended 1 verse.
St Louis De Montfort gives great advice in The Secret of The Rosary such as breaking up the decades over the day if this makes it easier to be consistent. But also points out that one attentive decade is better than praying the whole rosary unattentively (even gives anecdotal evidence). Obviously distractions will come but we should try to be attentive. He recommends slowing down the Our Father and Hail Mary's (with small pauses) to be more attentive. The first time I tried it I said the best/most attentive Rosary that I ever have. I struggle to do that each time though. I think 15 mins may be appropriate in a family setting though personally I would struggle to reflect on the mysteries when going that fast. I usually take about 30 mins though I could be more efficient. I agree that it is key to adjust to our circumstances - better to stay consistent than to only pray when you can do it perfectly (which is never).
This was amazingly helpful. It answered many questions I have had. I pray the Rosary in so many different ways and in different situations and am now more comfortable about how I have tailored it to these different situations. Thank you for the topic.
I think it depends on the person. If you don't like that then don't. But if another person wants to add other prayers and it's helping them to contemplate the mysteries of the Rosary, let them. Prayer is personal. It's between them and our Lady and the Lord.
Thank you! I often don't start because I'm afraid I won't have time to finish and “worry” about getting all prayers in! This frees me to now pray without worry and be more fruitful🙏🌸♥️
This video just came up in my TH-cam feed today. Very helpful, because I've always worried about not concentrating on the Mysteries as I say the Prayers. I've never liked the added prayers etc. and don't use them privately. I just learned about the Anglican 'Rosary' this week - the Jesus Prayer repeated. This seems like a something to add to my Prayer Life, since the focus is different and more concentrated.
I started to pray the rosary 2 yrs ago. I struggled with why are there all these prayers but now I just adapt to it and accept it as a nice way to start my day in a peaceful way. Also want to share that my ptsd symptoms are not impacting my life because of the way I start my day. I sometimes miss days because of shift work and just life in general. But I am highly aware how it affects me when I don’t do it.
I ABSOLUTELY AGREE WITH YOU!!! When praying the rosary in a group stick to the BASIC rosary. I have my extra rosary prayers that I pray when I am praying my rosary privately. Simple. After daily morning Mass at my church and I DO NOT STAY because it is other people’s prayers that they are adding. I think it should be kept as the basic rosary prayer and to add your own extra prayers, even if the regular group agrees, it is still rude.
I'm with you on this, I can't be doing with all the 'add ons' that people come up with. St. Benedict said to keep our prayers minimal. When it comes to the Rosary I'd agree.
When our 5 kids were all little, we prayed just one mystery per day but with related Scripture verses for each Hail Mary that helped explain the meditation. They learned their basic prayers & they learned what the point of the many Hail Marys were BEFORE their brains could be trained to tune the words out because of many meaningless (to them) repetitions. When they were older, we began to do a full Rosary, and over time, they were allowed to add whatever prayers they wanted. Then as life got busy with college, for example, we trimmed things down to the most basic. I believe that's what the Lord wants us to do - be faithful in prayer, yes, but adapt as needed for your God-given circumstances.
Just said my Rosary. I felt so desperate by its bad quality, that I was tempted to give up right away. But I didn't. I was compelled to make a leap of faith : tomorrow it will be better. And God supply my crappy prayer. Maybe this misery in praying and my act of faith was exactly what God wanted me to experience.😇
Matt, kudos for your family rosary time, but much kudos to those who can take the time honoring the scriptures throughout each decade. Sincerity matters.
It is not supposed to be a difficult prayer. It's structure and simplicity are what make it beautiful and easy. To pray it correctly you just need to not rush through it, listen to the words and mean what you're saying.
My daughter calls it prayer stacking. Adding all these prayers. When I was in the Legion of Mary in our handbook it stressed just doing the rosary in a simple way and while people might have lots of devotional prayers they are free to pray in private but doing the rosary as a group keep it simple and uniform. We also opened with come Holy Spirit (etc) instead of the creed, etc
That's so true! And then you have to make a mental note of which group you're in, because it changes from group to group. I think it's so much better to leave it simple.
Couldn't agree more. I am in a rosary group and I dread when we do the full pious bit - which even includes singing Ave Maria in between. I can just about stomach the extra prayer, after the Fatima prayer but the singing does my head in. It's such a wrestle within. When I'm on my own I do a very basic version without even the Fatima prayer. I'm very grateful for this conversation!
Excellent conversation. I have been a longtime fan of both Pints and Godsplaining, and these kinds of “crossover” episodes are some of my favorites. Thank you both, and may God bless you and keep you!
Matt, it is definitely possible to pray the prayers reverently while also contemplating the Mysteries. We do it all the time, like when we are driving, doing the dishes, or what have you while also thinking about something else. The Aves are like a lovely lyrical rhythmic heartbeat, a steady engine that fuels the imagination to contemplate the life of Christ. A good deep breath in and out at the start of prayer to quiet the mind and come into His presence really helps me to set my mind to pray. May God bless you more and more. +
Thank you. I have guilty for not singing Ave Maria & adding extra prayers between decades. I pray St. Louis deMontefort’s short version Rosary prayer. I’m frequently troubled with distractions, some against Our Lord & Our Lady which causes so much pain & horror. I believe that’s why I wait till right before bed to pray, then I have to fight from falling asleep.
Don't fear the distractions, just keep praying. They might be either your mind is restless and unfocused, and it's not a sin if you're not indulging in the distractions, in fact it builds virtue if you persevere in prayer in spite of them. They're often not depending on our will (unless consciously indulged), and just come and go. If you notice thoughts against Our Lady or Jesus, then it's most likely a spiritual attack. Then pray even more! And direct your will to God even more in this moments. The prayer is cleansing you. Persevere and don't abandon prayer, especially then. Don't worry too much, most important is to keep praying. The efficacy of the prayer is actually not always the same as we _feel_ we have prayed. For example, praying with all the best focus and distractions and nice feeling, may be less meritorious (because we've received a lot of 'help', grace to not be distracted), than a prayer with distractions but where you put more effort of the will to pray. You can judge the quality of the prayer by how it feels, only by its fruits.
Bless yourself with Holy Water before you pray your Rosary and keep some at your bedside. Bless yourself and bless your bedroom before you say your Rosary at night and sleep. Try to create a routine praying in bed (I start by watching part of a religious movie - I tape them) and if you fall asleep, well....St. Therese of Lisieux used to fall asleep. Maybe God is trying to tell you to relax and fall asleep in the arms of His beloved Mother, Mary. You cannot get better than that. There is a reason for everything. =^..^=
@@sleepinglioness5754 Yes absolutely. I always bless myself. Sometimes I pray for help & forgiveness of my sins & mercy, then I will eat a pinch of Blessed salts. I’m trying. GOD’S Will be done. 🙏🏽
For myself, whenever I pray my Seven Sorrows Rosary, the "Devotion to the Seven Sorrows" book by TAN Books prescribes a method very similar to the Dominican rosary but with the notable prescription of dropping the Our Father, making it even shorter (as it already is considering one is only praying a total of 49 Hail Marys). A Benedictine monk once told a group of vocation retreat attendees to either focus on the words of the Hail Mary or imagine yourself in the scene of the mystery itself (whether it be with Mary at the Annunciation or Jesus at the foot of the Cross). What also helped was chanting the Rosary.
I have foundi that learning the Ave Maria and the Pater Noster in latin and praying in latin helps me stay focused.and there are fewer words. and my throar and jaws and tongue do not get as tired or feel as strained as in English When I am very tired, i pray in a whisper,. i am working on learning by heart the other prayers in latin, There is a really lovely you tube Perpetual Virtual Rosary chanted/sung in latin that just plays over and over, going through all of the Mysteries, and at a comfortable pace ,There are english subtitles and a thumbnail picture of each Mystery on the screen and the Rosary beads change color when each prayer is said. it is a lovely visual and audio exxperience and it IS easier to chant. it is very pleasant to pray or chant along and work with my hands on embroidery. i was taught to add my special petitions for others, etc at the end of the last decade before the Glory Be and Hail Holy Queen.❤
@@marguerilla The TH-cam channel “Journey Deeper” has some good Rosary in Chant videos. Also, if you just search “Rosary in Chant” you will come up with good options. God Bless.
Thank you SO MUCH!! I have the 1962 missal and on page 52 found the original rosary which was said in my Catholic grade school 60 years ago. No one believes me that there was no Fatima prayer, no St. Michael prayer, and none of the myriad other prayers said before and afterward, depending on who is leading it. It is simple and an aid to meditation on the life of Christ, and I am immediately incorporating your "The Holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary" to start the rosary, especially with children.
So happy I came across this discussion, I avoid going to church early before Mass due to the rosary being said with all the extra prayers. Thank you for introducing me to the Dominican rosary.
I've definitely experienced what matt said about how he could have psyched himself up, but just wanted it to be done when they began the next mysteries. Glad to feel represented.
What a wonderful, thoughtful video. So much to reflect on. One thing I will add is that it is possible to say the prayers of the Rosary and contemplate the mysteries at the same time. Maybe not at first, but there came a point for me when those prayers actually prevented my mind from wondering. While Mr. Fradd says you can't do two things at once, your brain wants to anyway. I think of the mysteries as a movie and the prayers as the soundtrack playing while I watch. Together they get 100% of my attention. Watch a movie with the sound off and see how far you get.
YESSSSSS! My Parish adds so many more prayers onto the back of the Rosary. Just keep the Rosary in its simplicity. I know all the Rosary prayers (Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be, Fatima, Apostle's Creed, Hail Holy Queen, and the Final prayer). I show up to pray the Rosary before Mass and I'm lost, 'cause I don't know all these additional prayers.
I think that whatever version of the rosary you pray, if you have a prayerful intention, you can't go wrong and I think that includes making it "efficient" as Fr says (!). I say mine fairly quickly most weekdays, to fit it into my 20 minute break, but at the weekend I can spend longer in meditation on the mysteries.
To me, too many additions tend to break the meditative character of the rosary, it changes the focus into 'what's next' rather than on meditation that is built on the repetition, so you can focus more innerly, rather than in external variety. Its a different type of focus. To Fatima prayer I'm very used to and I like it. But some additions or singing is too much.
When my five children were young we would have tea at 3:00 share about our day and then say the rosary. I bought tea service items at garage sales so it was like a tea party and the children loved it. It shifted the energy for the rest of the evening to a much calmer state. The best times were when my husband got out of work early and joined us. Memories I cherish now many years later.
30 to 40 min devout Mexican Catholic traditional rosary....I start day dreaming. I always wondered about all the added prayers. Thank you for explaining and breaking it down for me. Can't wait to let my devout Aunt know... LoL
There are so many rosary videos on TH-cam that you can pray along with, my favorite being Halfheart. He adds some scripture before each decade, beautiful Gregorian music in the background and doesn’t rush the prayers. Takes about 22-25 minutes for 5 decades. I find it so much easier to stay focused and I enjoy seeing depictions of the mysteries.
Yes, it can be a struggle. During COVID I made the St.Luis de Montfort consecration to Mary. I promised to pray the rosary every day--and somehow that commitment has helped me to not only pray it everyday, but look forward to that time.
I went to a rosary group prayer where each person had to get up, walk across the chapel, light a candle, and state an intention before every Hail Mary. It took hours, was horrifyingly painful and was the least prayerful event ever.
it's like intention sprawl when a group wants to have ten or twelve intentions and solve all the world problems with one rosary. I think one for Mary's intentions is best. I think I heard Fr. Pine say that one time.
This is so true. I very often say the rosary with my catholic girl friend, and due to our respective families' own added prayers, our rosary starts with the Nicean creed + between each decade, we say the Oh my Jesus prayer + My God, I believe prayer + 3 times Oh Mary conceived without sin, pray for us wo have recourse to thee. We also add an intention of prayer for each decade. Makes it very long
@@alisterrebelo9013 We say it in both French and Latin, changing the language randomly for each prayer, without any particular order. Since you're literally saying the same thing but in a different language, it doesn't affect the time spent (although I guess Latin is technically quicker as there are less words)...
I see. Your girlfriend has two Fatima prayers right there - the "Oh my Jesus" and "My God, I believe." Perhaps you can suggest for her to choose just one. (I am not a member of the Legion of Mary, but I understand they don't even pray the Fatima prayer after each decade.) Adding an intention per decade is commendable, but it's easier to say them all at once at the start of the rosary, maybe before or after the Creed (but that's just me. ) Just one "Oh Mary conceived without sin" is sufficient, but if you're praying inside a church, in front of the Blessed Sacrament, I recommend adding, "Oh Sacrament most holy, etc." God's blessings to you and your girlfriend.
Oh my gosh...this is great! I love the Rosary, but prefer to do it rather quickly (~12mins). But I have seen and been a part of 30-40min Rosaries. "Piety Sprawl" is the perfect description. I prefer the efficiency and rhythm of a shorter Rosary. My first introduction of the efficient Rosary was in my early 20's, I never "enjoyed" the Rosary until that time. When I heard & participated in that efficient Rosary, I fell in love with it. For me it was life changing, and I found fidelity for it. Love this channel, God bless.
I grew up in the church and left it for a long time, but I don't even remember doing the mysteries. I remember the Our Fathers, Hail Marys and the Glory Be and that was it. Now I am back doing the rosary and it seems like a whole slew of other additions are there that I don't remember.
praying the complete rosary with all the mysteries spoken at each Hail Mary in German took me more than 2h. That's how I prayed for a while, until i removed the mysteries and just mediatted in my mind on them, which i did to fit better with my time schedule and don't start to sweat or rush it at the end.
I have the routine of doing a scriptural rosary, but with the uniqueness of making my way through the Bible with the rosary. I read 1 verse before each Hail Mary, and I stick with one book of the Bible at a time, and pick up where I left off the day before. Some may think it's weird because the part of the Bible that is being read (I'm in Samuel right now and today just read of the Bathsheba incident while on the 4th/5th joyful mysteries) may seem so unrelated to the theme of the mystery, but I think all of scripture is interconnected and all bound up in God's revelation with Christ from Genesis through Revelation, and sometimes it can be surprising how things seemingly unrelated are, indeed, related. Another thing I like about doing this is that it makes reading scripture better, and it makes praying the rosary better. My rosary becomes 30 minutes instead of 20, but I find it to be a far more enjoyable 30 minutes that just praying the rosary by itself for 20 minutes and having my mind wander everywhere, and I find it better than just reading scripture for 20 minutes and falling into the trap of reading it as one would read the newspaper. The rosary forces me to slow down and meditate upon each verse, and the scripture forces me to remain focused as those Hail Mary's provide the backing harmony of the chorus that becomes the prayer, combining both reflective contemplation with this well-dispositioned habit of invoking our Blessed Mother for her aide. Fulton Sheen has spoken of the utterance of Hail Mary's as the orchestra playing for a movie. I think this effect becomes somewhat true. Sometimes I take my mind a bit off the scriptures and look at Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Other times I will maybe think more of the mystery itself. Other times I am so engrossed in the scripture passages, an engrossment oft only made possible to me because of the accompanying rosary.
Ooh! I do that too! I love your point about finding rosary themes throughout scripture. It's a great way to find those subtle connections within scripture. 👌
I've heard from one Dominican that one might take _any_ Bible verse/fragment to meditate for a decade. Never tried it myself, but apparently one might do so. I'm personally not sure if it's still _the_ rosary, but it's certainly _a_ rosary as in a chaplet/structure of prayers.
What a great idea! My scriptural rosary is usually confined to the Gospels. Going through the Old Testament while praying the rosary is something I should try! Thank you very much. God bless you.
@@joane24 Along those lines of rosary as a structure, a priest once told me he goes along the beads and thanks God for 50 things in his life always. I think if you're doing the Hail Mary's and Our Father's I'd still consider the meditating on a verse a rosary de facto, though.
Enjoy the prayer in infinite ways. All is well, seems the present protocol on the Rosary. Whatever the heart and mind contrive as good for your state. Adjust whenever , whatever. Congrats to us all.
I would like to share my personal opinion on this and say that, as everything in life, there is a time and place for the whatever kind of rosary you want/ can/ need to pray. If you are beginning your rosary journey, you probably would like to start with a quick version of it. Even just one mystery out of the five first thing in the morning, then the second one in the middle of your morning, then the third one before or after lunch and so on… On the other hand if you like things straight you want a 20 min. rosary at some designated time in your routine. I live in El Salvador, and grow up in a very conservative catholic Latino family, and in my experience when the hole family gather to pray the rosary for a novena or something we would start with the creed, then first mystery, then Fatima prayers (and some other prayers that I wouldn’t know how to translate since I just know them in Spanish 😂) then a song to Mary and the second mystery… so you can have picture of the whole thing! And you have no idea HOW TEDIOUS it was for me as kid or teenage. But then I grow older and when my grandma passed and we were praying rosaries every night I came to realize that praying WAS NOT FOR ME but for her and you have no idea how much I looooove to pray for her, so the longer the better ❤❤❤ Now I’m in this point learning how to pray the rosary in English and found this podcast that has help me with it and it has THE MOST ENLIGHTENING meditations. It is Daily Rosary with Dr. Mike Scherschlight I really recommend it’s a 20 to 30 min. conversation ❤ So I just want to finish saying that it doesn’t matter what version of the rosary you are into right now, whatever kind of rosary you feel like praying DO IT WITH LOVE, AND DO IT WITH PURPOSE. Always with a purpose, put it n your heart, give it Mary so she can present your heart to the Lord with her beautiful hands. ❤❤❤
Rosary everyday here. And same, i try to make it 15mins and do a breathing sessiin with it, picturing the movements of the HS. Early in the quiet morning, it's all that's been promised. If not ill just squeeze it in during my commute, with a JPII latin audio on Spotify. When i want to do a long form rosary Adoration/lectio divina/ rosary. So you start a rosary at the adoration chapel. You bring your bible. And you read through the passages of the Mysteries. Read a bit, pause, pray a hail Mary, reflect and continue. It's just lovely.
For me, I look at the difficulty (if you can even call it that) of sitting through a whole Rosary as a sacrifice. If I'm not willing to devote 15 or 30 minutes to prayer, there's something wrong. Just gotta buck up and offer it up.
In the context of a group setting, I think it is important to keep the rosary short to make sure as many people come as possible. Also if the length of the rosary makes you not say it, I would probably shorten it.
Also in a group setting most Catholics are going to know the Our Father, Hail Mary, and Glory Be and have probably at least heard the Apostles Creed and Hail Holy Queen even if they don't have them memorized, so even people who don't pray the rosary often are going to be able to follow along, but not everyone is going to know all the random extra prayers or songs you might choose to add.
I believe we should pray the Rosary as we are lead by the Holy Spirit. I do the Fatima prayer, and when i pray the Rosary from Lourdes on EWTN, I recite the Miraculous Medal prayer.
Hmmm.... Well, I absolutely love the variety in the rosary depending on the church I am visiting. It makes me smile that Mary's adopted children want to add a personal touch to their prayers. I also treasure the times I have a 30+ min drive because it gives me time to be more intentional about each prayer. This rebuke I am hearing feels kinda odd like looking a gift horse in the mouth and just sneezing. But peace, I love your intent which feels like trying to protect the rosary from perceived ornamentation for ornamentation's sake.
Padre Pine makes a lot of sense. I like that everything Jesus did and said -- from his incarnation to his now being -- is salvific. That makes the rosary much simpler. It's not how good my mediations are around each decade. It's being present in the mystery of salvation in this medium of the rosary,. Thanks you two. Much appreciated.
I’m sorry, but did Our Lady not give the Fatima prayer to be said at the end of every mystery? What about the St Michael prayer given by Pope Leo XIII to be said after the Hail Holy Queen? How are skipping these prayers beneficial?
Sometimes Less is More. I was taught the Rosary as a child in the 1950s. It was simple, basic, and beautiful. All these add-ons dilute the sacred simplicity of the pure Rosary, imo.
This is my very struggle in praying the rosary. I get burned out, I go days without saying it. But I very seldom miss the Divine Mercy Chaplet because it is shorter.
I used to have the same problem when I was younger and a lady suggested to start saying the rosary on 2 days of the week. I chose sorrowful mysteries so I made sure that I would pray it on Tuesdays and Fridays. Once I got used to say it twice a week I included the other days little by little and have been praying it since! Also just say the Fatima prayer after the 5 decades without adding anything else, at least at the beginning. You will be done in 25 minutes max. I hope that helps!
After thinking it about, so many people think that the Rosary is just a vocal prayer but the true purpose of the rosary is bringing one to meditation and if so blessed to contemplative prayer. When saying the rosary in a group there is little time for meditation. If by the grace of God you do achieve contemplation, they get all upset because you leave vocal prayer for meditation or contemplation. Great saints like Catherine of Siena and Teresa of Avila will tell you it is a grave error to forgo the gift of meditation or contemplation for vocal prayer. If there is time you return to vocal prayer if not so be it.
The sheer repetition and steady rhythm are already meditative. I don't think one needs to stop (in the group prayer). The additions may unfortunately break the rhythm and meditative quality. The maintenance of a regular vocal prayer is also typically needed when one practices or reaches other forms of prayer in their prayer life. It helps to keep the feet on the ground and disciplines the mind, so to speak.
@@joane24 Please understand these are not my words or my thoughts. These are the instructions of two doctors of the church. I am not suggesting that vocal prayer is not important. As a matter of fact both saints say you can not leave vocal prayer during the Liturgy of the Hours or during Holy Mass. May I suggest you look into the Catechism of the Catholic Church Part 4 Article 3 2697-2724, St Pope John Paul II ROSARIUM VIRGINIS MARIAE and if you would like, I will find you the to sections of Catherine's Dialogue where she speaks of the contemplative gift and Terese's warning about placing vocal prayer over meditative and contemplative prayer.
@@patriciagrande311 I understand what you wrote. I know about various stages of prayer. I also know contemplation. A type of prayer isn't just about doing one particular prayer, it's about your whole prayer life and various stages it may go through. You start at vocal prayer, meaning you pray it regularly, and then you may reach the prayer of the heart or contemplative forms, as you grow in your prayer life. Still, even if pray contemplatively, you still can't abandon the discipline of vocal prayer as your 'daily routine' so to speak, because it's what 'ankers' you. I didn't say to 'place the vocal prayer above meditative or contemplative'. I said don't abandon it when you reach these other forms.
St. Bernadette said she never meditated while praying the rosary. She just loved repeating the Hail Mary over and over. She never got tired of it; she said it was like saying "I love you," over and over. She said that at first, she did not know how to pray the Glory be, but Our Blessed Mother taught her how to pray it. Bernadette also said while the Blessed Mother joined her in praying the Our Father and later on, the Glory be, she did not say the Hail Mary with her, although her fingers moved across the beads.
@@marietta1335 Have you read "Bernadette Speaks In her own words" Bernadette's whole life was a meditation of "I love you" . Great saint and great example of love and humility throughout all of her suffering.
I have adhd and schizophrenia and often I either can't concentrate, or I get stuck on certain thoughts until I'm going in circles and my thoughts get very disconnected from reality, I can't remember how I got there, and I can't figure out how to get back to earth. I struggle with the rosary because ...I get stuck on the creed. That's dumb. It's nice to get a reality check about how legalistically I tend to think about prayers. I definitely have the anxieties you mentioned, and the "more is better" mindset, like I definitely worry that God won't help me with things I don't remember to ask for help with, or that bad things happened to me because I didn't specifically ask for them not to happen. I am so limited that I would forget to ask God to intervene in the most serious life-or-death situations in the future if I was like craving an oreo right now, and trying to pray hard enough that God provides an oreo. When my thoughts are scattered and I can't stay connected to reality, trusting God with everything I forget or mix up is really really scary. It's like I KNOW I'm focused on the most transient, not important things, but it is all consuming to me and I have to trust that God is taking care of me even though I can't expand big enough to always remember everyone who needs my prayers. I have to trust Him with everybody who I'm too self absorbed to pray for when I'm hungry myself, or hurting.
@lacolombe007 0 seconds ago I am sorry to hear about your conditions. Have you considered praying the Jesus prayer? Or using the rosary beads to pray short ejaculatory prayers; “Jesus I trust in you” or whatever short prayer you can “Hail Mary, Full of Grace” . Our Lord is loving and merciful. He sees your struggle and limitations. Prayer is not meant to be a torture. Do the best you can where you are. Perhaps consider repeated a short scripture passage over and over again, if you are unable to pray the full rosary. “By his stripes I am healed”, “Jesus son of the living God have mercy on me a sinner”
@Aaalllyyysssaaaaa God bless you and may He help you to get your thoughts focused. He is not harsh and hard but sees the intention of your heart. Your efforts please Him 🙏
Regardless how long or short it is... Just pray it everyday with all your heart and soon you will really fall in Love with our Holy Mother and than you will find that it really does not matter. You really love her and you know that praying it really pleases her. In the end that's what matters!
@@JudeMalachi I've never heard Divine Mercy devotion as praying Stations on the Cross. Where I'm from (Poland) it's praying the Divine Mercy chaplet at 3 pm. Btw, interesting fact: there's actually an indulgence attatched if prayed in the church/chapel in front of the Blessed Sacrament/tabernacle (in Poland only, it's the locally granted indulgence)! Of course, the chaplet may also be prayed at any time of the day, but it's most common custom is to make it at 3; it's also when it's prayed in churches as group prayer, etc.
@@JudeMalachi Another point, maybe you can think of ways to still incorporate rosary but in different ways? For example, pray with audio while doing chores, or maybe pray it while talking a walk, rather than a making it a separate rosary-only time? Or maybe you may focus less on meditations/reflections of the mysteries and focus on the rythm as the prayer of the heart? Or, kind of inspired by what youre already experimenting with, divide the rosary into single decades said at various times of a day? Not all prayers said throughout the day have to have the same type of focus. In fact incorporating various prayers at various activities is important. So it's (obviously) important to have a one-on-one time with the Lord, where you're focused on prayer only and not do other tasks, but it's also important to incorporate prayer (or prayerful attitude) into other times, when you're focusing on various other tasks.
@@JudeMalachithe laity didn't say LotH so not all the saints of the last few hundred years were juggling both. And I have also never heard the divine mercy devotion being a chaplet at 9am and stations at 3?
@@JudeMalachi Are you a Priest or Deacon? Why are you interspersing the Rosary with the Divine Chaplet? The Divine Chaplet has it's own meaning and, imho, you are doing the prayer and yourself an injustice by trying to do both at the same time. If you give up the Rosary, one thing to remember is, of course, the Rosary is the most powerful weapon in this spiritual battle. Many of the saints you refer to were full-time religious and lived in a religious environment. Maybe you're doing too much. A weight trainer starts off with appropriate weights and gradually increases to their potential.
IPieta has the Rosary prayers. They are a bit longer than 20 minutes and I find the additional prayers welcome sometimes when I am not strained for time balancing family and work. Lately though I have been praying with Hallow.
This is so on-point. I, too, dislike lumping extra prayers on the rosary. Vocal prayer should not dominate. The meditation is key. Many pray the entire rosary daily because that is how it was intended. In the book The Secret of the Rosary, St. Louis de Montfort states that 5 decades was for children. Adults prayed ALL the mysteries daily, and broke them up throughout the day.
Thank you! This video has already helped me to return to the very heart of the rosary and take my time actually meditating on the saving mysteries, after months of machine gunning through the vocal prayers. For too long my attention had tilted towards the outer performance of this great prayer and I'm now again shifting to its inner beauty 🙂 God bless!
People complain how long it takes to pray whole rosary but yet have time to watch endless 2 hour movies per week! Kind of tells you where their heart really is?
This is a needed discussion. I used to pray the rosary everyday but I’ve been so guilted into doing it BEST and correctly and slowest, etc that I’ve given it up. I’ve been begging Our Lady to help me find my way back…and here is this video. God heard our prayers. He KNOOOOWS us just as we are-anxious, distracted, lazy. I just love Him and Our Lady MORE for helping me…directing me….leading me.
You sound like me. Thanks for posing this. It's good to know we're not alone.
WHO "guilted" you? Not God. I get very distracted but I don't give up and I do not gabble at 50 mph, I speak at my normal speach's speed 🙂
I love moments like these. Just experiencing that real dialogue with the Lord gives my faith a boost.🙂
You’re guardian Angel is very sensitive to your prayers and needs. What a beautiful intercession from them. Smile about this and give thanks. All glory to God!
God is amazing! He has perfect timing...and a great sense of humor. I see both here in your statement. Thanks for sharing.
Ok! So we did!
They know. They are still close to God due to their innocence.

A religious sister visited us for Mass last week and she wanted to say the rosary afterwards. At the end of each decade she would say the Fatima prayer, "O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell; lead all souls to heaven especially those who are in most need of. Your mercy"
I think I will add it to my daily rosary.
I love that little prayer. I sometimes say it randomly through the day.
That was requested by Our Lady at Fatima.
The prayer of Fatima has long been a part of the Rosary.
That is always how I've heard and prayed the rosary. It is a beautiful little prayer and the whole rosary is still only 10 or 12 minutes depending on how fast you speak :)
Our Blessed Mother told us to recite that prayer!
You have Fatima in your title but did you hear the Fatima message as the Virgin Mary CLEARLY says fifteen mysteries?

I feel like the Rosary should be prayed slowly, because it truly enters into the meditative nature of it, and I feel like it goes with breathing better too, I feel like I'm trying to keep up with my breath when people pray it fast. It ends up taking me about 50 minutes but it always feels more worthwhile and like I was truly in it.
Great comment! I am going to try praying it more slowly tomorrow and see what is what.
I don't need to shorten my prayer, I like my rosary the way it is. And now, I am practicing Latin. Jesus Bless us all
Dominicans are always a treat to listen to.
@@tinalettieri Just to be sure... You understand that mariage is for life? There is no such thing as an ex for God.
@nathaliedube2913 I do understand. Actually that marriage was annulled but I don't have a word for him. I remarried and am a widow now.
Your comment is sooo relatable…. I’m a mum now and I’m trying not to do this with my kids.
Wow based mom
@@jazamaraz8029 Thanks for saying this...
Good for you.
A very good discussion. Prompted me to say a Rosary again after a long time. God bless you all
I know what you're saying.
@@davidchew848 Amen🙏
I love praying a scriptural Rosary. Definitely a longer version to pray but no wondering mind as each Hail Mary has a Bible scripture that focuses on the mystery being prayed.
Me too!
Same here brother. It helps me focus on what I want to think about.
I do the same thing I think prayer is personal.
Break it up into sections throughout the day, this will help. We all have days like that perserverance is the key don't give up. God bless.
Scriptural Rosary!
It’s easy for me to do since I am new to Catholicism and the rosary and it allows me to get close to God and practice prayer while I learn the official way
I really like the sound of this. I'm going to try it. Thanks for sharing!
Seek to say it everyday. It is the most powerful prayer, brother.
Agree. Sometimes it is true: Less is More. I was taught how to pray the Rosary as a child in the 1950s. It was simple and basic and beautiful.
Wow Fr Pine is one of the most intelligent people walking this earth. Praise God for him.
Dominicans are always like this. Maybe because all of them are Thomists.
I love your comments on the rosary, the elimination of the excessive additions and keeping the prayer simple. Thank you so much.
Thanks 🙏
Yeah I've tried some on TH-cam and oh no. All the Adderall on Earth couldn't make me focus. I can't do anything for 45 minutes.
@@DeidresStuff Not easy is an understatement 🙏🙏🙏
Would you be able to share the website?
Such a heartwarming story! Thanks for sharing. God bless you.
I get this, piety sprawl has been an issue for me until very recently. Thank you both for reinforcing this lesson for me.
I agree - the Rosary is so SIMPLy beautiful as it is and I don’t know why we have to add more prayers……..as though it makes us “more heard”.
The Rosary prayed correctly is difficult and I think it’s suppose to be, for our own good. It takes devotion, focus and perseverance.
So, I guess if you’re not finding it difficult, you just need to add axillary prayers until it is? Got it.
Easier if you say it every day before supper.
I found doing rosary is the easiest prayer, lol. And it become easier once you keep doing it again and again 😂
I agree. Immaculate Mary has appeared many times holding the Rosary and the Scapular. Our Mother knows best.
It is not supposed to be a difficult prayer. It's structure and simplicity are what make it beautiful and easy. To pray it correctly you just need to not rush through it, listen to the words and mean what you're saying.
100% in agreement! The possibility of contemplation of the Mysteries easily becomes obscured.

I love chanting the rosary. Absolutely love it. It takes me an hour to get through five decades when I do, but I love chanting the rosary!

I pray it in Latin, the Pope Benedict recording and the Monastic tone Salve at the end. It's 20-25 minutes and it's great.
Matt's very honest about his humanity. Can't help but love the guy.
I'm glad that there is room for my brokenness.
The key to our most wonderful Faith. He knows we are crummy, do your best and try for better. May God bless you!
This was the absolute best video ever done on PWA! I am going to show this to my CRE class and discuss.
LoL
But hey, if she likes the extra prayers, more power to her! No reason not to do it. You just don’t have to do it in order to be devout.
Great one. Fr. Pine was a very clear instructor, I look forward to hearing more from him.
Highly recommend Godsplaining if you like Fr. Pine
I struggle to pray the rosary. Please pray for me.
I prayed for you, God bless
There are so many rosary videos on TH-cam that you can pray along with, my favorite being Halfheart. He adds some scripture before each decade, beautiful Gregorian music in the background and doesn’t rush the prayers. Takes about 22-25 minutes for 5 decades. I find it so much easier to stay focused and I enjoy seeing depictions of the mysteries.
@@jemsmom97 I enjoy all the images too. God told us to make as many images as we can.
I can picture Shia LaBeouf saying, “JUST DO IT!!!” 😆
This is so true. Makes it very long
Try that in Latin... you'll be praying for 2 hours 😂😂
@@alisterrebelo9013Latin actually flows more easily, and thus quicker :)
@@alisterrebelo9013 We say it in both French and Latin, changing the language randomly for each prayer, without any particular order. Since you're literally saying the same thing but in a different language, it doesn't affect the time spent (although I guess Latin is technically quicker as there are less words)...
@@mathieujvc Ave Maria is way quicker than the German "Gegrüßet seist du Maria" xD
I see. Your girlfriend has two Fatima prayers right there - the "Oh my Jesus" and "My God, I believe." Perhaps you can suggest for her to choose just one. (I am not a member of the Legion of Mary, but I understand they don't even pray the Fatima prayer after each decade.)
Adding an intention per decade is commendable, but it's easier to say them all at once at the start of the rosary, maybe before or after the Creed (but that's just me. )
Just one "Oh Mary conceived without sin" is sufficient, but if you're praying inside a church, in front of the Blessed Sacrament, I recommend adding, "Oh Sacrament most holy, etc."
God's blessings to you and your girlfriend.
This discussion has been so informative! Thank you!
Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you
praying the complete rosary with all the mysteries spoken at each Hail Mary in German took me more than 2h.
@@marietta1335 Glad you have something new to try, God bless!
Even just one mystery out of the five first thing in the morning, then the second one in the middle of your morning, then the third one before or after lunch and so on…
On the other hand if you like things straight you want a 20 min. rosary at some designated time in your routine.
But then I grow older and when my grandma passed and we were praying rosaries every night I came to realize that praying WAS NOT FOR ME but for her and you have no idea how much I looooove to pray for her, so the longer the better ❤❤❤
Now I’m in this point learning how to pray the rosary in English and found this podcast that has help me with it and it has THE MOST ENLIGHTENING meditations. It is Daily Rosary with Dr. Mike Scherschlight I really recommend it’s a 20 to 30 min. conversation ❤
So I just want to finish saying that it doesn’t matter what version of the rosary you are into right now, whatever kind of rosary you feel like praying DO IT WITH LOVE, AND DO IT WITH PURPOSE.
I am so glad I watched this video because I was feeling guilty about the adding more to the rosary.
I pray to reach a point in my spiritual journey where I am burning with desire to pray additional prayers in the Rosary.
Sometimes Less is More. I was taught the Rosary as a child in the 1950s. It was simple, basic, and beautiful. All these add-ons dilute the sacred simplicity of the pure Rosary, imo.
I just follow the Hallow app daily rosary. 18 mins. Love it.
But it’s not really shorter if you say the rosary without the add ons. It’s a difference of three minutes. The Dominican rosary is even shorter.
Pray the Eucharist if you can.
God hears us for our much speaking.
I agree, there are a lot of extra prayers thrown in there. We in Ireland stick to the Rosary Our Lady taught us.

I am sorry to hear about your conditions.
@@lacolombe007 Thanks

Very helpful, thank you.
IPieta has the Rosary prayers. They are a bit longer than 20 minutes and I find the additional prayers welcome sometimes when I am not strained for time balancing family and work. Lately though I have been praying with Hallow.
Great discussion!!!!!! Thank you, Fr. Pine! and Matt😊
Thank you for saying it.
Thank you! This video has already helped me to return to the very heart of the rosary and take my time actually meditating on the saving mysteries, after months of machine gunning through the vocal prayers. For too long my attention had tilted towards the outer performance of this great prayer and I'm now again shifting to its inner beauty 🙂
God bless!
People complain how long it takes to pray whole rosary but yet have time to watch endless 2 hour movies per week! Kind of tells you where their heart really is?
This is precisely what I thought about whilst growing up in the church since I was a kid. I was just too afraid to even inquire about this
