I also loved Van Helsing. I watched it when I was around 7 years old. I love how they combined different mythologies and fictions in a way that makes sense. It also has the best werewolf design I've seen in a movie. I was surprised to see online that critics didn't like it and it didn't do so well in the box office. But despite that, this will forever be one of my favourites supernatural film.
Critics and fans do not watch the movies looking for the same things From a critic point of view the acting was not great, over the top in most places. Pacing was not good. Set design was drab. Story did not flow very well with lots of holes. Contrite and unoriginal. Critics look at a movie from the technical/design/delivery aspect often being "writers" The movie was neither ground breaking or executed in a way that really makes it stand out from a movie making standpoint Not much of that matters to a fan. The movie told a story, had some cool graphics and tied some things together that we do not see done a lot. The movie is fine and campy in the way that many monster movie fans like Just like League of Extraordinary Gentlemen the movie is great in MUCH the same ways which is why there is the gap between viewers and critics in the same way.
I loved this film when it first came out. Was unhappy that it didn't make much money and got panned by the critics.Hoping it will become a cult classic.
I just want to comment to thank this movie for being part of my life. I first watched this movie when i was about 6-8 years old and it was amazing when I first watched. I just finished it now today, and I wanted to say that all of the surprise and hope of the movie is still there as when I first watched it. I understand it more, and I am watching videos to further dive into the story of the plot. I am 22 now, and it’s a movie I still would look forward to seeing. Definitely one of my top 3. From the story, to the characters, the actors of choice, the scenes, the transformations, I LITERALLY LOVE IT ALL. One of my favorite scenes was the ballroom scene, it still is. I just realized today that in that scene they were all vampires in the reflection, though when I was younger I thought it was just of Drac and Anna. I am so glad to see people doing videos of this movie. It’s very sentimental to me. I had more family (as life goes) exposing me to such great cinema, and the exposure in general to such attention grabbing cinemas earlier in my childhood has really made me appreciate cinema and all that goes into it. Great shoutout to my dad, he definitely put on. I am glad to see this movie age as it did. Thank you for this explanation also, serves this movies great! :)
For even today's standards this movie cgi still look so amazing, and like you said, the lore, the setting, everything about this movie is pure gold, my favorite movie ever
This movie so needed a sequel, because Hugh Jackman crushed this role, and you’re totally right about the missed opportunity to flush out Gabriel’s backstory. Also, your little side comments are hilarious throughout! “I like how this gun is normal size, but it has like 1000 ft of rope.” 😂😂 Keep up the good work man!
I remember in theaters, I thought the ending of this film was so beautiful, but sad, with Anna’s death. But the warrior send-off, and then seeing her family in heaven was so nice. Also, the humanity (no pun intended) of Frankenstein’s monster, and how he’s this hero/good guy of the entire film, is pretty cool.
5:47 I think the townspeople were angry with dr. Frankenstein who to create his creature had stolen pieces from the corpses of the village cemetery. In fact, when Anna and Van Helsing approach the castle, Anna says that the murdered owner of the castle is a "grave robber"
@@noahrombough2802 not at all. Family matters most in a small secluded town. When ur family remains were desecrated, it become personal. In 70s or 80s most grave even has a metal cage .
@@theneet9528 Bruh, I was quoting the film. Though I have the line wrong, he actually says "A pity your moment of triumph is being spoiled over a little thing like grave robbery."
I absolutly love this movie and wish they had at least gave it a comic book series. It could have helped flesh out the story. And I think the reason the wives' eyes are different from the other vampires is to show that they are not only more powerful then a normal vampire but also to indicate which are older. Which is why Marishka's eyes were golden, where as Verona had blue and Aleera's were pink. If you notice Dracula's eyes are also different, as they are more of a white/silver color.
Let's not forget how good the main theme of this movie is and how well it fits in: mystery, adventure, epic. The gypsy guitar melody is actually what made me want to learn how to play guitar 👌
This movie is legendary. I've grown with it. Everything was great : The musics, the actors, the story, Dracula ... It's like Salomon Kane. Would have loved too see a prequel with Gabriel's past full story.
I can't believe this movie got a poor reception when it was released. My mother and I would watch it every year on October 1st for almost a decade we loved it so much.
13:00 I imagine he either overheard her talking to him in the library, or figured it out when he saw her crying and in a shocked state after the werewolf attack. Anna is no crying damsel, so Van Helsing would very easily be able to decipher the Werewolf must be someone she knew--and with Velkan not there, leaves one option.
bit of a late reply to your comment, but both these movies were intended to be at least trilogies. Universal at the time I believe didn't think there would be much value in a large franchise, especially since the sheer cost and difficulties filming the lord of the rings was a massive risk that only paid off due to incredible (and expensive) talent in absolutely every miniscule aspect. League of Extraordinary Gentlemen could have been a victorian/steampunk avengers. And that cursed knowledge haunts me :(
Gabriel's werewolf form is my favorite among all the movies and dramas. To me, it's simply the coolest and most gorgeous regardless of how powerful the others are. 😁
Don't know if anyone has said this, but for the other vampires not being able to transform into hell beast form. I suspect it's because they were cursed by other vampires created by Dracula. The further you get away from his 1st gen curse, the less and less of his powers you get.
Seems to be more a scientific explanation there for a more supernatural themed movie... It makes sense biologically wise but I think there's more to it than just that
@@theunknownshadowish Well also Curse wise it makes sense. If you use magic and curse one person. Only that one person has the full curse on him. Why would the Children from the cursed Person have the exact same strong Curse then the actual targeted cursed person?
@@HandsomeGamerGuy by your logic if you curse "one person" then why should any of their children... or anyone unrelated for that matter be cursed. Also they aren't HIS children they were bitten wither by him or others that were. So... if it passes from person to person via bite, then they SHOULD all be able to go hell beast... But going by your argument, they then should not even be vampires to begin with; as only Dracula WAS the one the curse was placed on.
This is honestly one of the funnest movies ever made. You're obviously not supposed to take it too seriously and I love it for that as well as how it pays homage to the classic universal horror films
Let me just say that you did a fantastic job with this video. I sat and listened to this whole thing. It even made me pause my game a few times to listen closely. I can definitely tell this movie means something to ya cause you’ve put that love into this video! Good job, man!
Huge fan of this movie, its one of my personal favorites, also it has the best werewolf transformations that I've ever seen in a movie the way they rip their skin off and the beast comes out from within, like its clawing it's way out of the human is so unique and very well done.
I've always wondered if Dracula and his brides have to "mate" in their more demonic form to create their little gargoyle offspring or if they can just "mate" in normal form 🤔
My worry is how the f did the brides lay those things upside down in the ceiling and why mammals supposedly lay this egg sacks. Because they are actually demonic and it would make more sense to the movie, I know. 🤣
So if Gabriel was an archangel does that mean when he was bitten by the werewolf did he turn him into a hybrid cross between a werewolf and an archangel?
No. Gabriel was the human manifestation of his namesake, meaning he himself is a man with an Angelic force controlling him. So a Werewolf possessed by an Angel would be more accurate, but it's not as simple as possession. More like a merging, I think.
This movie felt alot like the Castlevania series. Especially the older NES titles. It had that old timey dark, gothic feel that I want when watching a Dracula movie.
I absolutely love this movie. It’s the movie that got me obsessed with monster movies such a classic. As long at Hugh Jackman is still alive I still want a sequel.
This is one of my favorite movies. I’m glad you liked it too and thank you very much for explaining things that were not explained in the movie very well.

I’ve watch this movie easily 15 times but i was a kid most of them and seeing this analisis i’ve realise i never understand anything. It becomes so much more interesting like a 1000 times. Thanks.
I always got the idea that the grey werewolf was Anna's dad..and the hand that comes out of the tombstone is Igor. That's how he knew where the monster was.
Anna stated her father went missing, and her brother saw his dad's bones right "Literally" beside him when he got put into the straps to be placed as another experiment 🧪..he was definitely an older Werewolf or Lycanthrope
I thought the same. I figured the Dad (Boris) figured out that only a Werewolf could kill a Vampire - something that could truly kill Dracula, but he couldn't control it because he didn't transform during a full moon like Van Helsing did during the final battle with Dracula. But before Boris could regain himself, Dracula captured him, then used him as a test subject, as well as a guard dog to try to kill Anna and Valcan. The last time we see the Dad, confirmed by his son Valcan, was when he was back in Dracula's castle, who died due to the experiments being too much for him to handle. This also explains why Dracula had a cure for the Werewolf curse, which tells me he also knew about this weakness, either he learned this on his own, or was something Boris confessed to him, and was prepared to deal with anyone who happened to have the curse. I also noticed that Dracula used Valcan, a newly turned Werewolf, to use as a sacrifice to reanimate/birth his children just like he used Boris, so who knows, maybe Dracula was the one who turned Boris into a Werewolf because using just a human wasn't enough, which explains why he has a cure to begin with. I wish we got a sequel or remake for this universe. The movie was one hell of a ride! If you ever need a good movie full of action or something for Halloween (lol), this is a movie worth watching.
I think the gravedigger tried to kill van Helsing as a means to appease Dracula and to get in his "good" graces by assassinating the guy that killed one of his wives and by extension prolong his own life in the process.
movie where the beginning of the movie there are people drunk in the table at a castle there is a werewolf that kills a lot of people there years later in modern times a group of tourists go to the castle swim naked in the pool of the caste it is snowing outside
Wanted to tell you I thought you did an excellent job. You had a great voice for narrating, so I look forward to hearing more from you on movies like this and others. 😊
Imagine if Universal Studio's Dark Universe would of kicked off with a good as the writing of this film. I love that the story had some ambiguity, its perfect for other movies to explain in a would be Dark Universe
I already thoroughly enjoy all of your videos, but this one in particular had me captivated the entire time. It did an already great movie even more justice.
if i’m being honest , this movie is definitely my favourite piece of Vampiric lore ever showcased . and i’ve quite literally watched them all . i love Dracula Untold too as it paints him in a different light (no pun intended) and then also the Netflix Dracula 3 parter because of how it gives an entirely different interpretation to why he is the way he is .
This and League of Extraordinary gentlemen (LXG) were silly movies to me at the time they released. Damn near 20 years later and they are low-key my favorite silly flicks of all time. Just solid movies that didnt take themselves too seriously but, had solid and serious plots. Love it.
I think the green blood is because the bullets aren't silver. There's only a couple of small clips in the film when Valkan and Gabriel each shoot a werewolf with silver it is red blood. Perhaps it has something to do with the nature of lycanthropy being a magical curse
Back story, lore, monsters, weapons, everything about this movie was top notch. Hollywood can't make good action, fantasy movies like this anymore. It was something only Hollywood could pull off, no other movie industry could do it.

“I miss movies like this” took the words out of my mouth
Hough went on to be Wolverine, and what's his name went on to be a James Bond villain

Hands down, best-looking werewolf in any cinema or show. I absolutely love the design of each werewolf.
Homie did you really just copy the top comments and combine them into one 😂😂😂😂
Critics and fans do not watch the movies looking for the same things
From a critic point of view the acting was not great, over the top in most places. Pacing was not good. Set design was drab. Story did not flow very well with lots of holes. Contrite and unoriginal. Critics look at a movie from the technical/design/delivery aspect often being "writers" The movie was neither ground breaking or executed in a way that really makes it stand out from a movie making standpoint
Not much of that matters to a fan. The movie told a story, had some cool graphics and tied some things together that we do not see done a lot. The movie is fine and campy in the way that many monster movie fans like
Just like League of Extraordinary Gentlemen the movie is great in MUCH the same ways which is why there is the gap between viewers and critics in the same way.
Critics don’t represent the average persons viewpoint, back then but especially nowadays. It’s been co opted just like everything else.
@@cjthebeesknees then there’s the fact that studios started influencing the review process heavily
I always liked this movie as a kid. Knowing a bigger backstory makes me wanna watch it again for the first time in 10 years.
I loved this film when it first came out. Was unhappy that it didn't make much money and got panned by the critics.Hoping it will become a cult classic.
It has.
Well I do remember watching this but it also came out around the same time as the first Hellboy. I think it overshadowed this.
It made money
I thought it Made like $400 in total at the box office ?
You could have never narrated my best childhood movie any better and for that you have my Fellowship. AMAZING!!!
It's amazing to see how 2004 CGI can hold up this well
I just want to comment to thank this movie for being part of my life.
I've seen some people say it's so bad but I just don't get it. It looks really good.

This movie so needed a sequel, because Hugh Jackman crushed this role, and you’re totally right about the missed opportunity to flush out Gabriel’s backstory.
Also, your little side comments are hilarious throughout! “I like how this gun is normal size, but it has like 1000 ft of rope.” 😂😂
Keep up the good work man!

100% agree, might be my favourite Hugh jackman movie behind X men. And thank you I appreciate that! 🙏
There is a anime movie that is a prequel to this movie don’t remember what the name of it though
It could a prequel and a sequel, show the timeline of Gabriel killed Dracula! Series of his travels with Carl, their chemistry was too good!
Ok so the prequel movie is called van helsing the London assistant
I remember in theaters, I thought the ending of this film was so beautiful, but sad, with Anna’s death. But the warrior send-off, and then seeing her family in heaven was so nice. Also, the humanity (no pun intended) of Frankenstein’s monster, and how he’s this hero/good guy of the entire film, is pretty cool.
5:47 I think the townspeople were angry with dr. Frankenstein who to create his creature had stolen pieces from the corpses of the village cemetery. In fact, when Anna and Van Helsing approach the castle, Anna says that the murdered owner of the castle is a "grave robber"
yea like its in original story of Frankenstein
Correct. That’s exactly why they were storming the place. I’m glad someone caught that.
Dracula also states that directly, "Seems excessive for a little thing like grave robbery"
It's literally my favorite part of the theme.
People always diss excellent vampire movies until later they realize they are good.
This movie is legendary. I've grown with it. Everything was great : The musics, the actors, the story, Dracula ...
It's like Salomon Kane.
Would have loved too see a prequel with Gabriel's past full story.
The black and white intro to this film was a interesting choice
i first saw this movie in the back of a van on our way to a camping birthday party, i did not expect it to be soo good lmao. i wish they made more
I can't believe this movie got a poor reception when it was released. My mother and I would watch it every year on October 1st for almost a decade we loved it so much.

This is always one of my favorite movies. It is campy and there is a lot of dramatic scenery chewing. I loved every minute of it.
Best werewolf movie transformation. Literally tears the humanity away revealing the beast inside
Similar to Wendigo also
This movie, alongside Wolfman, have the best Werewolf transformations. It's painful, it's scary, it's savage, I LOVE IT!
Definitely an underrated movie for sure. This and *League of Extrodinary Gentlemen* need more love.
bit of a late reply to your comment, but both these movies were intended to be at least trilogies.
And that cursed knowledge haunts me :(
Simply one of the best films ever. The story, the acting, and, oh man, the CGI... Grossly underrated.
Gabriel's werewolf form is my favorite among all the movies and dramas. To me, it's simply the coolest and most gorgeous regardless of how powerful the others are. 😁
Thought I was the only one
In the interviews they said they wanted him to look like he was a rockstar
I watched this in theaters in 2004. It became an instant classic for me. Such a good movie
Dude yes they did they just didn’t look like Dracula
This movie was a huge inspiration for me to write my own vampire novel
This is honestly one of the funnest movies ever made. You're obviously not supposed to take it too seriously and I love it for that as well as how it pays homage to the classic universal horror films

Let me just say that you did a fantastic job with this video. I sat and listened to this whole thing. It even made me pause my game a few times to listen closely. I can definitely tell this movie means something to ya cause you’ve put that love into this video! Good job, man!
My dad brought this home on DVD. I inserted it knowing nothing about it. After it finished I immediately watched it again - brilliant film!
Hes one of the best draculas. He was both entertaining, intimidating, yet calmly confident, with the slightest hint of comedy. Just great.
Lol 🤣😆 sex is sex, mate
some things are better lft forgotten...like this question
My worry is how the f did the brides lay those things upside down in the ceiling and why mammals supposedly lay this egg sacks. Because they are actually demonic and it would make more sense to the movie, I know. 🤣
The fact that their babies are born as vampires heavily suggests the former (yikes).
Not only that but it would seem they lay the gets from thier vaginas in demon form from the look of the eggs. Crazy gross

Dracula: “Feel free I don’t actually need you anymore Victor.”
The actor played that role to PER-FEC-TIOOOOOOON! This is definitely one of the better Dracula representations in media, as well as vampires, in my opinion. And that goes for all the monsters in the movie, if I'm being honest

It's the lore I've grown to realise makes these stories oh so entertaining. Great review!
I remember that her father was use as an experiment. It's show in the movie.
no
I thought the same.

⭐⭐⭐⭐ Unquestionably, this movie and the acting of Van Helsing and Dracula makes this movie exceptional.
I think the gravedigger tried to kill van Helsing as a means to appease Dracula and to get in his "good" graces by assassinating the guy that killed one of his wives and by extension prolong his own life in the process.
That what I thought. He always came off as “im trying to be on the winning team.”
@Kawaii Onee-chan Definitely a "Better you than me" kind of guy. He even admits this by saying, "It's just in my nature."
