This reminds me of "Artist's Handwriting" in art class. The words (or artist's signature) is a design that must fit well with the piece and I must say, you definitely made these fit into the design. And honestly, I love comic sans and papyrus fonts for when I'm writing something. It gives me more playful feel (comic sans) and then a historical feel (papyrus)
I also feel like these three designs are siblings or family at least. You got cool grandpa (Seadogs), questionable dad/older brother (Long Horn), and then innocent kiddo (Blast). Its a unifying composition and really balanced too
I love the “you have alternatives built into your computer” like this man didn’t just put together a masterclass in graphic design, and also USED OTHER FONTS FOR THE VOLUME LABELS
The Long Horn one is so over the top, I love it. "Extra Caffeine" is hilarious, but it also makes the branding make more sense. I could totally see Long Horn being marketed as an energy drink, and on the shelf next to Bang and Monster, the edgy branding feels right at home, and the black and red color scheme stands out against that sea of neon and whites. It does look like a barbecue sauce flavored soda, though. Maybe the words "Root Beer" need to take up more of the can.
I feel that the fonts really work for the designs because you used the designs of the fonts themselves to your advantage, like using comic sans, a popular font for comics, in a design the aesthetically matches a comic book feel; that's one of the reasons I think the fonts were shunted in the first place, people started using them everywhere despite it clashing, and stopped working with the fonts altogether
Preamble: I'm not really a graphics design person (so I think I qualify as real - although I'm a Redditor by heart, so maybe I'm ultra virtual?) Mehhh. I think Papyrus really doesn't look that great in this context. (It does look good as the Avatar title tho, imo). Maybe it's just because it's a bit too thin/fine. The Comic Sans example looks great tho. The strongest "objective" argument against Comic Sans in all contexts that I've heard is that it has pretty crappy kerning. Him manually arranging the letters sidesteps that. Also, Impact does exactly what's on the tin.
It’s always funny to look at, but I mean he did ask for criticism and none of the comments shown in the video were overly snobby. Of course people are gonna comment on the fonts, that was the point. Besides from the fonts tho, all of those designs looked pretty cool and I doubt most of them could do better.
Similar to someone else's comment, it's amazing how much "font stigma" seems to affect how good a piece is to someone lol. All these designs look fantastic to me and it's funny to see people try to describe how it's bad because of the font you're using.
These fonts are hated because they are often used by non designers in poor contexts. As good as these all look, you made the fonts feel at home by putting them in the comfortable contexts they were actually made for. Comic sans, comics. Papyrus, desert/beach. Impact, MANLY YELLING. I think it would have been more interesting if you had made it the goal to find a new context for these fonts where they can still look good.
I loved how longhorn looked. I couldn’t even tell it was impact by the end, I felt like it really worked!! Blast also had a solid chance at life but in general it felt less like it could be a real product. Sea dog felt like something I would fine in one of those very cheesy curio shops. But you still did so amazing with these fonts and I’m super impressed!! Long horn was my favorite!
Comic sans is a good looking font. Black cats are beautiful creatures. Benihanas are a good looking skateboarding trick. Have your own opinions. Hating to fit in is a self defeating disease.
I've always liked these fonts, and I'm baffled when people say they're overused. People are too afraid of the reactions to these fonts to overuse them. These days, they're underused.
Comic sans is good for comics (and people with dyslexia, according to some website) Papyrus is good for things written on ancient paper and impact is good for big things (i see it in like every advert ever too)
There is a reason why they were used so much in the first place. Part of that reasoning may be cheap printing or some other similar thing that doesn't matter much anymore. Yet even so, they were considered some of the best looking fonts considering the restrictions that designers had. They're only considered bad now because people use them for unintended uses. They're good fonts when used properly.
@@The_Rememberedthere was some constructive criticism but a few people were making very condescending remarks about it. "Looks like a kid's first power point presentation" and "there are alternative fonts to the ones built in to your computer" don't seem very constructive to me.

As usual, I love what you came up with. The Blast can is fantastic. I only wish you had made "Seadog's" all caps. It would have fit on the banner better. (Yep, I'm a graphic designer too).
This was brilliant. You actually made outdated and overused fonts look and feel amazing again. Your execution shows what you can really do with these fonts hated by designers.
Thank you for this video. Didn't really know what to expect, but it got me real nostalgic! When I was just starting out as a graphic designer, learning at an ad agency, I used to make mock-ups like these in my spare time too, because the challenge (combined with the absence of a client's pointless requests) was just so much dang fun. As I got more professional and had less time on my hands (and grew more and more burnt out on client work), I eventually stopped altogether - and completely forgot about it until this video! Seeing you create these packaging designs took me back to that time, and how much fun I had. And it's amazing how you turned these fonts around, too! I hope a lot of young artists see this and realize that the fun and challenge is not always in using amazing assets that already look great, but to take something barebones and mix it up to fit the need of the design goal. Both the Blast-logo and the Long-Horn-logo blew me away when it slowly became apparent what they would become! The Seadog-logo is great too and I think you could have even taken it a step further (like using drop caps and slightly changing up the sizes and baselines for each character to create a more organic, handwritten feel). That's what I also like about the video: It's not destructive ("this font sucks!!"), it's _productive_ ("let's see what we can make with this!"). The comic-sans-bad-meme is such a superficial take, especially by people outside of design. Yes, a font with nothing else to it, no adjustment for kerning etc. can look pretty boring and stupid. Comic Sans is objectively just not a universally "bad" font. The point is that you have to do something with it! So yeah, thanks for this video! Looking forward to more!!
I wonder how did the reditors look at these professional looking designs and thought that the designer doesn't know there is other fonts that aren't the 3 most hated ones (imo the fonts aren't even that bad, maybe overused but not bad ). My favorite design was the one with the impact font, I don't drink beer but I might reconsider it after seeing that can in a store haha
@@LutasticLu Never claimed it was, though I do realize I said I dont drink beer insted of I don't drink *root* beer but I still won't drink either haha
Something that pisses me off is how people think a design is the worst thing ever JUST because you didn't use their favorite font that no ones heard of.
I hate Comic Sans as much as the next person, but I REALLY like the vibe you went with for it. It actually makes it work really well, and that's one of those products that, if I saw it on a store shelf, I'd be more drawn to it than any of the other choices. Really just an amazing job with that one.
people are able to find something bad in everything, but their definition of a good design is "don't use what people think is bad, they can't be saved." what is good and bad is up to whoever sees it. in my eyes, these are the best things I've ever seen, and i would never notice they use any of the three fonts, and i wouldn't care either. all that matters is if it's good, and has actual work put into it, and all three fonts fit the design perfectly
When I studied graphic design, I made it a point to use comic sans wherever I could get away with it in a joking manner (on my presentations and faking my in progress pictures to make it look like I'd actually used it during that part). I wish I had the skills to make them actually work like you managed to.
I like the “overused” fonts more in some situations :) like yeah there’s a reason they’re overused, they’re fun! People like them! And people who would turn away a product for a cheesy font in an otherwise great design piece are a species I would like to study under a microscope :) I would like to learn what genome would make someone that sour :)
Those designs were AMAZING! I wouldn’t be able to do not even half of those awesome designs, like, I can’t express how amazed I feel about those designs!
I’ve been using photoshop for years and not bad at it, but you completely flipped it on hits head, the creatively is insane, the things you think of and how fast you come up with something is crazy, keep the videos coming 👍🏽
as someone who does digital art outside of logo design, your videos have taught me a lot about blending modes. i pretty much only use add/multiply/overlay lol
Man I'm going into my 2nd semester of communication and design and your videos have helped me so much to get an insight in how people look at products. Your content is also one of my favorites. Thank you for being here!

Fun fact: In the hit game undertale that we all know and love, the comic sans font is used in Sans’s dialogue, while the papyrus font is used for welp- Papyrus.
wow, genuinely shocking results honestly! I get the impact and especially papyrus, as you didnt do as much to alter those. but im really surprised the comic sans ended up being recognizable enough to get called out! I was honestly worried you had altered it so much with the overlap and coloring that no one would recognize it. Guess that just goes to show how far disconnected from the design space i am lol
I was wondering how you were going to make Papyrus look good, and you did it. It's all about knowing when to use what for the aesthetic goal. They all look great, especially the one with Comic Sans. I actually like Impact, though; it's so versatile. But that's probably the reason it's so overused; which, in turn, is the reason I wouldn't use it myself.
“And now to bring Captain Seadog to life, we’re gonna start out with a skull.” “And now to metaphorically give the one known as Seadog life, we will start with the representation of death.” Lol! I LOVE this artwork!
I’m no graphic designer, hell I think I’d be downright terrible at it, there’s not a chance, no matter how deep you are into graphic designing that you’re this pressed over what font someone uses. Some fonts look better than others sure, but these are 3 separate badass designs, even with the most hated fonts of all time. Anyway, 12/10 designs, if I saw these on the shelf I’d buy all of them, especially Blast.
AMAZING designs. I think those typefaces (however hated) are perfect for your designs, BECAUSE you made the designs around them. I think the appropriate response is the "no way you made comic sans look good" rather than the "branch out I don't like the letters" lol. That being said, using better fonts would make these look better (well not impact, I think impact works perfectly for the last one). One problem is the fonts are BOTH recognizable AND hated. If only one you could get away with it imo
Wow, these infamous fonts have scarcely looked better. Awesome branding ideas too. I think you would have gotten less hate on the Papyrus one if you had given the text some more hierarchy, like make “Sea Dog’s” all caps, or give it a slight stroke, maybe make it a different size than the “Root Beer.” It didn’t seem as much like a logo as “Blast” did.

Its a unifying composition and really balanced too
Are you sure you're not referencing Undertale
I love the “you have alternatives built into your computer” like this man didn’t just put together a masterclass in graphic design, and also USED OTHER FONTS FOR THE VOLUME LABELS
The condescension from Redditors is infuriating!
It's even 16 fl oz like energy drinks
You didn't just design with overused fonts, you showed me how most illustrations I see were designed. 10/10 I'd like a full tutorial.
I feel that the fonts really work for the designs because you used the designs of the fonts themselves to your advantage, like using comic sans, a popular font for comics, in a design the aesthetically matches a comic book feel; that's one of the reasons I think the fonts were shunted in the first place, people started using them everywhere despite it clashing, and stopped working with the fonts altogether
there's no way real people can still complain about these fonts

Mehhh.

I think you managed to summarize the problem quite well. After all, context is EVERYTHING.

Totally agree! I personally think these fonts look great.
Comic sans is good for comics (and people with dyslexia, according to some website)
Papyrus is good for things written on ancient paper
and impact is good for big things (i see it in like every advert ever too)
There is a reason why they were used so much in the first place. Part of that reasoning may be cheap printing or some other similar thing that doesn't matter much anymore. Yet even so, they were considered some of the best looking fonts considering the restrictions that designers had. They're only considered bad now because people use them for unintended uses. They're good fonts when used properly.

Next person loves comic sans
Ok but why
people are able to find something bad in everything, but their definition of a good design is "don't use what people think is bad, they can't be saved." what is good and bad is up to whoever sees it. in my eyes, these are the best things I've ever seen, and i would never notice they use any of the three fonts, and i wouldn't care either. all that matters is if it's good, and has actual work put into it, and all three fonts fit the design perfectly
There is just so much that can be learnt from this video. Astounding how you make it look so good and so easy at the same time!

I was wondering how you were going to make Papyrus look good, and you did it. It's all about knowing when to use what for the aesthetic goal. They all look great, especially the one with Comic Sans.
