FrSky XM & XM Plus: Flashing Firmware (EU/Non-EU/LBT/FCC)

- If your FrSky XM or XM plus receiver gets the solid green and solid red light when trying to bind it to your transmitter, then you need to change firmware because they dont match. I explain everything here and cover where to download the firmware, wire your receiver, connect it to the Taranis, and flash the firmware.

Thanks for this video mate, used it to update my FrSky XM+ firmware which needed to be done to get RSSI on channel 16.
This might help someone else though, I have the Taranis QX7 radio and couldn't get it to work using the pins in the module bay, kept giving me a "bottom pin" error. After some digging I found out I needed to use the "smart port" located at the bottom of the radio to the left of the micro SD slot. You don't need to change the order of the wires though, if you hold the radio as you do when flying, pin order from left to right is GND, +5V, SIG.
Can't flash mine micro XM from both module bay connector and S.Port connector at Taranis Q X7 bottom. Used wire ordering was correct (S, GND, +5V in module bay and GND, +5V, S on S.Port at bottom). In both cases after selecting the "Flash ext. device" got one red LED flash in XM receiver and "FW update error", "Bottom pin no resp". Can't figure what it mean. Nothing useful about that from Internet searching too.
+KrotowX That's the error I was getting when using the taranis expansion port, just make sure you are connecting the wires in the correct order from the xm to the radio. It's also possible that some of the radios shipped with the smart port pins connected in a different order, the way to check this would be to hold a multimeter in DC mode to two of the pins at a time and tell the radio to flash firmware. When you get a reading of around +5 volts you'll know your red meter lead is on the 5V pin, the black lead is on the GND pin and the pin you are not connected to is the Sig pin. You could also just try different orders while trying to flash the xm until it works but I I think you run the risk of damaging the receiver doing it that way.
I noticed only now that micro XM receivers have SBUS hole with rectangular conductive area and GND hole area is round. I was used to that in many circuit boards holes are marked exactly opposite - GND is rectangular. The cause of non-binding to Q X7 was swapped GND and SBUS wires. The good thing - XM didn't fried with that. After wire swapping it was bind and is working now without problems. Managed to upgrade firmware via bottom S.Port on Taranis Q X7 too. Thanks about helping though.

Thank you!!!! wow...I feel like a complete idiot right now but this video just saved me from wasting money on a new receiver. I was struggling to get the XM+ to work on my Brain RE1 FC. Every time the SBUS wire was connected the LED would stay solid red instead of going green after binding. I thought I had flashed the latest firmware but until I watched this video I did not realize that I had to click the "Download" button on the frsky-rc site instead of downloading the top one in the "Version history" list. I was not paying that much attention and thought the Version history included all of the available downloads and the top of the list would be the latest one. I was wrong, lol.
After watching this video and realizing the mistake I made I went and downloaded the latest firmware and flashed it, and now it works! I feel pretty dumb right now but super glad you made this video and saved me, haha. Thanks again man :)

Just as an FYI, LBT stands for Listen Before Transmit, which basically does what it says on the tin, and is legally required anywhere within the European Union.
Hi! After trying to flash XM+ receiver with Taranish qx7 I got "Module refused firmwawre" No matter what firmware version I'm trying to flash. Do You know can help?

FYI LBT is EU version and FCC is for everywhere else not just USA. LBT is listen before talk and a legal requirement within the EU now.
On the Taranis X7 there is an smart port on the buttom. Connecting through this without switching the ground and plus i was able to flash the firmware

Great series of vid dude. I'm working my way through them all after spotting this fix to my problem. There's now 3 different firmwares for 3 FCC & 3 for LBT.
1st has standard name as in your vid, the other 2 are appended with rssi8 and rssi16.

I have a beta fpv 95x v3 with an XM Plus, but it's connected via JST SH 1 (1mm pitch connector) to the flight controller on the drone. Is there an adapter to take that SH 1 and make it the same female pin config to plug into my Taranis to flash it? I actually have to downgrade the firmware on the XM Plus to work with a beta FPV LightRadio 2SE.
Recently a buddy of mine tested FCC vs LBT (Listen Before Talk) which is the only legal version for Europe.
His conclusion was that LBT actually had a larger range than the FCC version.
During this test the difference was only 30 meters but maybe you could try this also, just to check if it's better to use EU-LBT instead of FCC
Even when using the smart port on the qx7 it is still coming up with the bottom pin no response error. I tried flipping the lead going into the transmitter so it was going signal, 5v and then ground which caused the led to momentarily go on but then the error pops up anyway. Any suggestions what I should do now?

I Have a dim red and green light sometimes it is bright on my xm plus and not connecting with my transmitter.....I have tried flashing firmware but keeps saying flash failed. I have flown this quad before but just started giving me this problem. Is it a bad receiver?

I just got a Loki-2 in which has a xm+ receiver in it got the two solid leds sometimes they are bright when i try binding it other times they are bright don't know if that makes a difference but my question is i have tried flashing fcc firmware it keeps telling me firmware flash fail?Any ideas
Hi J.C.! Could You help me? My XM +RSSI was stable 50% (Omnibus f4, latest Betaflight) . A read that the FW upgrade will fix it. I did what is in the video, step by step, but when I would like to flash the FW I got a "firmware update error" message. The leds are flash only at once. Now I can't bind it with the X9D +. I upgraded the transmitter to opentx 2.2, same result, except the message. "Firmware update error, module not responding."
When I try to bind it, the green and the red led has solid light. Is that fixable somehow?
Where can I find a connection to plug into my Radiomaster TX16s? I have an XM+ receiver that won't seem to bind with my TX16s.

My XM+ is just flashing red when powered try to bind with my turnigy 9xr pro with frsky DJT module and red and green are solid tried to flash different software ... FCC LBT still same can find what is the red blinking light about can I even bind those two? module and receiver?
Is there a way to flash this receiver from a computer instead of a the transmitter with say an FTDL adapter?
I'm plugin this into the main Port on a CC3D board (which is configured for S-Bus) however as soon as I turn on the receiver with the bind key on I get a solid green light even with the transmitter off. I'm not getting anything Betaflight either. Any ideas guys?

I tried to use the same method to flash using x7 it does not work. I measured the voltage between voltage and ground pin. It is less than 1v i.e can not power up the receiver. btw I am using the open tx 2.2 rc13. May be I need to go back to stock firmware for this to work?
worked after I rolled back to stock firmware on the tx. interestingly I did not need to rebind after I updated the fw on the receiver.
I don't have a Taranis - can this be done in any other way? Perhaps and Arduino?
Tried this but I get an error and the solid green and red lights flash once and I get the fw update error. Dead rx?
Thanks for the video. How/can you get what I guess is RSSI. I've hooked mine up and the little symbol doesn't appear on the Taranis and my range check switch says 0 db.
These receiver dont have telemetry at all. So you cant see RSSI in the Taranis. But it does send RSSI out on channel 16 so you can see RSSI in a on screen display. Here is how. th-cam.com/video/q-rOd4_DSIk/w-d-xo.html
I understand now. When it says no telemetry I figured it just meant s.port telemetry from the frc -> reciever -> transmitter. Figured you's still get RSSI. Thanks for the link, I'll check it out. Giving the Omnibus F3 Pro so I'll hook that up too. I've watched your vids on that, thanks for those too.
I have the X7 and I have tried using the port on the bottom and the pins on the back and when I try to flash the firmware it just says "Bottom pin no resp" the soldering seems fine so I'm not sure what's the problem

Unfortunately, since my Taranis X9D+ still has the original v2.0.9 FW on it, when I connect as shown, I only get the option to DELETE the RX FW file. Long ago, I tried to update my Taranis FW to latest version, but I got the error msg. that some of my parameters wouldn't adapt, since they'd been changed/dropped in the newer X9D+ FW. So, not wanting to go thru all my models and make corrections, I reverted back to v2.0.9. Then, when I did that, I found that attempting to update the Taranis corrupted my model files, so I wound up having to redo them anyway. What a pain. There should be an option to flash FW on the XM or XM+ via a PC USB port (or serial port).
Can anyone help? I have an eu taranis X9D and an XM+ from China (bang good) followed these very helpful instructions.. flashed the receiver with eu-lbt but still get red and green solid lights when trying to bind. Tried several times but to no avail. Anyone shed any light on this?

Quick question the XM+ has 2 different fcc firmwares (xm+fccrssi161221 and xm+fcc161221). Any idea what the difference is between them?
I'm not positive but I'd guess the RSSI one has RSSI placed on channel 16 like the XM
Yeah that makes sense. Just thought it was odd they'd make two different firmwares. I suppose it is for people who need to use the full 16ch without the need to rssi. :shrug:
hello there and anyone who might know something more.....on a quad with XM+ reciever...i just plugged battery to fly and it seems like it lost binding.....this happens for 2nd time...the previous time i reflashed the xm+ for RSSI too and it didnt work immediately..in the 10+nd try after rewriting different firmwares and retrying to rebind etc..it worked...now again with no reason since yesterday i was flying normal without any troubles..i just went to fly and no binding...of course i wouldnt have writen this message ....i already tried to reflash again and rebind more than 10 times....it dont make sense whats going on? any idea?
Hey, you solved my problem, but now when I go to betaflight i don't receive any signal, how can I solve it? When I downloaded the firmware it came with 3 different versions:
-XM+LBT170313-RSSI16.frk
-XM+LBT170313-RSSI8.frk
-XM+LBT170313.frk
It is possible that only one version is the correct?

Hey Jc if my taranis is bound to my xm+ in d-16 does that mean I have Eu firmware. conversely if bound in d-8 mode would it be FCC firmware
Nope. EU and FCC can both use D8 and D16. Those are just different protocols for different receivers. For example the all the D seriers receivers like the D4R-II uses D8 mode, all the X series receivers like the X4R-SB, XSR, X8R, and XM use D16 mode.
Aha thankyou for that tidbit. In addition to your statement if I wanted to transmit Rssi to a separate osd I would need to know what firmware is on the xm+. Fcc I here works but taranis wont release the necessities for EU firmware to transmit Rssi. love your videos, very knowledgable.

I had a solid green light after binding, but my rx could not connect to my taranis . Is thier a need for a firmware update?
Make sure you have your taranis set to D16 mode, channels 1-16, and also make sure you have everything set up correctly in Betaflight.
Project Blue Falcon i did check the channels , mode and on BF. I tried flashed one of the rx & still no improvement. Also , tried the 2nd rx and still the same. These are xm + . , is thier a need for an update on TX ? Im on 2.1.7
I had similiar issue, green solid light but not signal in BF... I upgraded the Firmware of my internal XJT Modul to international and flashed the firmware on the RX, after that I saved couple RX's.... Hope I could help
Hey JC I'm getting a solid red after binding. Green light flashes while pressing, unplug then turn on and I get solid RED.. Is this firmware?
I've never seen a solid red light. Not sure what that means. It could be firmware. Its worth trying.

If your Taranis has EU firmware then it wont fly at all because it wont bind. In that case you'll have to watch my video on switching firmware.
Do anyone have idea why it isn't possible to flash brand new micro XM receiver through both module bay and S.Port connectors at Taranis Q X7 bottom? Used wire ordering is "S, GND, +5V" for module bay connector (as seen in this video) and "GND, +5V, S" on S.Port connector at bottom of Q X7 if looking on it from top (as in flying). In both cases after selecting the XM firmware, pressing enter and selecting "Flash ext. device" got one red LED flash in XM receiver and "FW update error", "Bottom pin no resp" in Taranis. Can't figure what it can mean. Nothing useful about that from Internet searching too. Taranis Q X7 have latest firmware and OpenTX installed (2.2.0 release from 2017-05-30).
BTW This XM receiver didn't want to bind too. It started to bind normally - steady green with flashing red when switched on with F/S button pressed and TX in Bnd mode. But after switching RX off and on (when Bnd mode on Q X7 is switched off) it has steady red light with slight green light pulses and is not bound. Can it be that this RX is DOA? I have other micro XM RX which arrived in same shipment with nonworking one. This second RX is bound to mentioned Q X7 radio without issues and they are working great together. So we can rule out radio problems.

After I bind and power on I get a Red Blinking light. When I turn my Taranis the red light switch to Continuos red light instead of Blinkin and the Green Light Blinks very little every 2 secs something like that

Any ideas as to why green and red LEDs on the XM would be on but dim? I have used this receiver before and had not problems so it's not the firmware. I checked the voltage and it's getting 5v. I am baffled, it's as if the button is stuck.
I have the same problem. dim green and red lights. I also wondered if the button was stuck but I can click it sometimes. Maybe 1 out of 10 times it will power up with a solid red led but then when I try to reboot and bind it goes back to red/green dim. Bind and reflash firmware fail. Did you ever solve this?
I gave up and just replaced it.
Update! I tried flashing this firmware but as of recently frsky changed their firmware, make sure you go under older downloads, I downloaded the most recent one and it doesn't work, I guess it's for the newer access transmitters, and when you get into the transmitter, to flash it's now called s.port. it will save you a lot of headache😅
i dont get it i tried both fcc and lbt and both give me a solid red and green light what am i doing wrong im pretty sure i dont use rssi to use thoes
