    I must say I hate filters because I have features that I think make me attractive to the beauty standard of my culture and genetic heritage, and instagram and snapchat filters take away some of these features, which offends me because it is like they are telling me that my culture's beauty standards are wrong.

      Yea everyone’s preferences are different. I personally prefere straight brows, but I naturall have the high pointed ones which I personally don’t find as pretty so I purposely brush them down so they look straight lol. Same for crow eyes. I love those little wrinkles around the eyes and try to squint so I’ll get them at a younger age XD beautys definitely subjective!

    "Instagram Face" makes me think of the Uglies books by Scott Westerfeld. When you're young, you're a "Littlie;" when you hit puberty, you're an "Ugly;" and once you hit sixteen, you undergo plastic surgery to become a "Pretty." Each age group after Pretties gets specialized surgery to make everyone's faces have similar standards of beauty.

    Another added element to all this is that people have to have a fair amount of money to keep up these tweakments, so it also keeps people in a cycle where they have to earn more money or get in to debt to consume more and more things that we don't actually need. While we are busy thinking about how to earn more money, working harder than ever, being consumed with how we look and sharing photos of ourselves/spending more time on social media, we have less time to think about other more important things like politics and social issues (in my opinion).

    Actually, fillers have been shown to not fully dissolve in the 6-12 months that they usually advertise. Not sure what fillers were looked at (you can find the video on youtube if you type “Face fillers don’t dissolve”
    They looked at MRI scans of patients after years and most of them still had filler in the area they got done after 5 years.
    It’s sad and scary to think what people are going to look like when they continue filling their face to keep up with beauty standards

    Having beauty standards that are only achievable through surgery is classist as well. Life, if the only way for the vast majority of people to follow the beauty standard is to pay hundreds or thousands of dollars for cosmetic procedures, then it's automatically inaccessible to poor people, i.e. only rich people can be pretty.

    • @Ash-op2ql

      There was another TH-cam who I follow who was saying essentially the same thing, but with regard to “perfect teeth” that all these influencers have. • @itsliliok
      @itsliliok 3 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      And on top of making beauty inaccessible to poor people, we also know about the "pretty privilege" that Khadija talks about. The less conventionally pretty you are, the less opportunities you have. You get treated worse, you get dismissed, etc. I lived it myself, being underweight with long hair, and then gaining 20 kg and cutting my hair short. The way I was treated was night and day, it was awful. So without even touching upon the self esteem issues, depression, EDs, anxiety etc that that mindset brings, by making "beauty" only accessible to the elite, they're marginalizing people with a lower income even more.

Most politician's and most Doctors are men, isn't this one obvious too? Most judges, most police officers, most lawyers and most prosecutors are men. No one is keeping women from these jobs they are keeping themselves from these jobs. 60% of collage students and graduates are women and 40% If you ask me these jobs bore women to death they rather be a cosmetologist or a makeup artist and there's nothing wrong with that as these fields are mostly what they are into.

    Just wanna say that fillers do not "disappear", they travel. That is also the reason why people who have gotten fillers for years look so bloated. It's not because their fillers were botched but because the past fillers have traveled to other parts of their face.

      SO true. The answer they give you is pure hypocrisy since they aren't letting women be who they really want (or at least themselves) since women with big noses, small breasts, big body, etc. probably at least once in their life felt insecure. These stereotypes lead to people wanting to be the "general beauty standard". From my point of view, it's boring and ugly when people look just "fine", literally like society wants you to look. People with a natural appearance (basically an appearance that wasn't modified with surgery) and that has those "imperfections" I usually find them much more attractive and exotic, but that's just my opinion.
      The same happens with men of course.

    As little as about up to ten years ago my naturally chiseled arms were considered way too chiseled for a woman and people would often react to them but not in a very positive way. Nowadays I feel like a superstar in a sleeveless shirt, getting compliments across the board. I grew up in the eighties with a bigger butt that was an absolute curse in those times. J. Lo, Beyonce and the Kardashians made meat on the lower body trendy, and compared to them my butt looks kind of small but it's still big enough that it draws positive attention. My point is - I've pretty much had the same body for the past thirty years, and in those thirty years my body type, or at least some body parts, would go in and out of fashion. Whatever the instagram face is, it will go out of fashion in a few years, but these people will stay with permanent damage and the face they won't like anymore.

    As a mixed person growing up in these current beauty standards, it’s been wild since I’ve had confrontations on my features and feel dehumanized by it all since usually nobody ever wishes to address the racism or issues in regards to our identity; but rather profit and fetishize us even further despite all of us coming in different shapes, textures, colors, and sizes.
    It’s so weird hearing my white relatives and friends making these comments in regards to my looks when I always been bullied for the clear combination of European and Nigerian features I possess despite it all.
    It’s just feels more like I have to conform to these expectations when they aren’t even uphold by those who share a similar identity, but are instead trying to obtain it while pushing us in the sidelines when we speak out or discuss our trauma. :(

      You know I’ve experienced something similar, I live in England and while I’m white I’m a foreigner and my family is literally known throughout the entire town as the foreigners just because unlike many of the others we embrace our culture and don’t just try and pretend we are English. Also people tend to comment on my strong jawline and nose (mainly my strong jawline though) and people tend to like to try and pair me up with other foreigners because they think that will automatically make us “go well together”, my good friend also experiences something similar just because she’s Asian, (she’s Chinese to be specific) and just because we have this boy in our class that’s also Asian (Japanese) they say that they “would be perfect for one another” and it’s just so fucked up. There’s also this girl in this class that almost fetishises foreign cultures and whole nationalities, it’s just so creepy.

      And to make it even more obvious that it’s about their genetics and not their personalities is that almost all of the other foreigners in our school have never actually been out of England and it was their parents that did all the travelling and I get that there’s nothing wrong with that, but my friend and the boy (that are not compatible at all, in any aspect) both have nothing to do with the culture, the buy is seen and identifies as from Cardiff and the girls parents are English and both of them know nothing of their culture and their food, and the way of life of their cultures the are both in spirit and way of thinking is incredibly English, making them no different from everything else, and from thorough questioning my friend and I found out that the reason people found them compatible was because they were both ethnically Asian and it had nothing to do with them in actuality other than their genetics.

People now have silly expectations of what a mixed person should look like: not too light, but not too dark either, only the pretty features from each ethnicity. • @agircekim
      @agircekim 3 ปีที่แล้ว +47

      yes, people's faces look swollen after a while, because the fillers don't dissolve fully and start to migrate inside the tissues, so the former plumping effect fades and people just keep adding more fillers. it seems like jaclyn hill's or nikkietutorials' faces look so swollen because they can't stop using fillers. they didn't look like that when fillers weren't a thing.

      Just like now, people within individual racial groups don’t all look the same, so if in the future we are all racially blended, we will all look really different but be one indistinguishable race of peoples.
      And not everyone trying to achieve this beautify standard can pull it off and make it look natural.

    hey Khadija! I'm a teenager and I've just started watching your videos, and they are really good! They explain everything in a clever and empathetic way, so I'm really learning a lot with you! Your videos like the slim-thick video clarify all these questions concerning toxic beauty and beauty standards nowadays and, as a teenager who constantly sees people fitting these standards, your videos help deal and learn about it. Keep up the good work! Love from Brazil!

    I still feel that TikTok has a racist algorithm. Their response was more of a PR cleanup
