  • Dragon's Dogma 2 is a pretty cool game with a lot of really great ideas that reinforce its open world through your exploration of it. What do I mean by that? Listen on and find out!
    This is a new kind of video for me. Not going to replace my essays, but hopefully supplement content with something fun and interesting that can come out between longer/involved pieces. I hope you enjoy it, but please know I'm open to feedback on this!

    Dragons dogma 1 was made at the same time as dark souls 1. So it's not a souls game, it is it's own thing. Witch is dragons dogma.

      I started DD about 3 weeks ago or so.
      I don't need another video game anymore. It has literally everything I wanted. The character creation is so insane.
      I haven't visited gran soren yet. I wanted to learn everything. Played 45h and started a new file knowing what I wanted. Not touching the DLC.

    I had a moment in Batbakhtal (whatever the southern part of the map is called) where I was using a sky trolley to try and get back to the city at night. What I didn't realize is that below the trolley were several Succubi (Tier 3 Harpies), a Grand Lich, a Fuzzy Minotaur, and Red Wolves. The Succubi easily dismantled the trolley, dropping my very high-level party into a pile of shit far deeper than I have ever stepped in. At this point, I was convinced that, even without me, my pawns could handle anything. My pride was left in tatters when I had to reload a save so I could meet this challenge under better circumstances.
    What's funny is that it didn't take long for me to get humbled again, when I jumped off of a short cliff to fight a Dragon. My pawns, confused on how to safely get down, drew the ire of a large pack of Gore Harpies. I, in my single-minded pursuit, did not notice the trio of Rock Saurians who were about to stun lock me after the dragon knocked me away.
    Both of these situations were random unscripted elements that wove together into a perfect storm. It's part of what I love about this game and one of the few things it has above It's predecessor. Dark Arisen, for all that it's great for, had no random elements to its encounter design. Granted, it was more intentional in enemy placement.

    • @bobbyb6053
      @bobbyb6053 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Enemy placement in DD2 is kinda crazy, I actually wonder how that oxcart gets anywhere without the Arisen on it.
      Still love it though, Batthal especially is just fight after fight with very few campfires around. Still on my first playthrough, 90 hrs in and not even close to having the whole map explored. Just unlocked my last vocation yesterday, now lets try that Warfarer!

    DD1 is way more responsive and less clunky/sluggish than DD2 so to say it didn't feel good in terms of movement is literally insane considering how movement feels in DD2 but to each their own.

      It's definitely a bit jarring to go from DD1 to 2, but it's not so bad once you kinda get used to it. Took me a while but I appreciate some aspects that 2 does well in. I'm personally okay with the change after a few hours but yeah, it's something that is a bit iffy at first.

    when playing archer, consider waiting for your next arrow to charge before firing it, as it will do more damage, and leave the "spamming" quick arrows to the auto-lock for weak enemies. you'll know your next arrow will be at full charge when the reticle has shrinked down fully

      I used 2 wakestones on self (6 on npcs) in the first playthrough, 1 was to make traversal down a cliff faster and another was when fighting 3 big monsters and a bunch of bandits and my last save was further back than I felt like going.
      I do find it interesting that loading from the last save lowers your max health, not that it matters because usually when I reached a point where I died a lot I was already in 1 shot territory.

    I expected to like this game but was surprised at how much I like it. I usually hate companions in games like this and almost always play solo, but in this game I find the pawns especially my main pawn, so weirdly charming. I make a habit of never watching guide videos before I've put some solid time into games like this. Just to avoid spoilers but also because of things like this: when my main pawn died, I was heartbroken. I'd spent hours exploring the countryside with her, she'd had my back fighting hordes of enemies, I'd chuckled at her weird sense of humour. It wasn't until one of my other pawns mentioned that I could resurrect her at a riftstone that I actually realised this was possible. I didn't learn that from watching a TH-cam guide, I'd learned it organically by simply playing the game. Any game that can make me care about a companion NPC that much is a winner for me. I couldn't care less about best builds, OP builds, best pawns, "beating" the game, etc. All decisions are made by instinct not strategy, and the game is so much better for it. This is fast becoming one of my favourite RPGs.

    Another tip. Try playing with the trickster. As a few level the trickster vocation about four or five levels, You gain a passive ability called detection which makes a noise every time there is a wakestone shard or a seeker token nearby. And you can use it on other vocations. So it really does make the game more immersive for exploration once you finish all the content.

  • @RichSmithify
    @RichSmithify 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Nope, the pawns never shut up and after a while it does get repetitious. But I still enjoy listening to their banter with me, with each other and it's a welcome change from Skyrim's loooong periods of silence interrupted by moments of "I'm sworn to carry your burdens". The whole companion system was brilliantly done by the developers and the pawns are clearly one of the best things about DD2.

    I turned a corner and a Dragon was sound asleep. I thought, ok, lets just walk slowly past.....nope....my warrior pawn decided right at that moment to loudly run up to it and start slashing away at it with his greatsword! I was level.....maybe.....20ish. It was as you said, like an atom bomb dropping on us. My little squishy sorcerer arisen was abruptly stamped out of extstence along with my whole squad. I refused to use a wakestone as I hoard them like toilet paper! Honestly, I have about 60 hours on my main account and about 30 on my second PS account and I love the game so so much! I love how the game can coast along for ages and then one enemy looks at you and goes, well, f*** you in particular and you are wiped off the face of the earth

    The main thing, someone new to Dragon's Dogma, needs to understand up front, is that this game is not about questing, it's about exploration, it's about having your own adventure, seeing a griffin on top of a mountain, and going up to kill it, not because there's a quest marker on it, but because it's fun. Just like the original, the game is designed to explore until you can turn in, and or complete several quests in one go, not one at a time, that takes a little planning, and patience. That's not going to be for everybody, which is fine, Ubisoft games exist.

    I will forgive your comments about Dragon’s Dogma 1😉 and still subscribe. I agree wholeheartedly about the traversal… it’s so dense, and enjoyable.
    You play an Archer. Did you know that if you come upon those stealth goblins that hide in the tall grass, and you see them as a player (but the Colonel doesn’t) your character won’t auto-target them. I hate those little buggers.
    If you get the chance, or desire to do so), try to find the path to the right to get to Battahl. It’s a mountain path, and torrential thunderstorm, that leads to a crazy cave. I won’t give away the conflict, but there’s no dragon, or golem. When you get through it, to me, I was thinking it had a grande canyon spectacle.

    Subbed. Like the style of content my guy.
    Only thing I have to say is comparing a mechanic into a game if it shares something with another IE “stamina” doesn’t make it a “souls like”. We gotta stop comparing everything to souls games. It’s disingenuous to the souls franchise and the producers of other titles. Because of that logic you should consider every souls game a “shadow of the colossus” like because it has stamina. Know what I mean?

    I have very few issues with this game, however I wish I could place my own markers like we can in other open world games. I get it we get 5 but those are for navigation. I want to be able to mark places of interest on the map whether that’s a griffins nest or a mini boss spawn or even an apple orchard. I love exploring but I don’t like that I can’t mark or annotate my discoveries on the map beyond the game marking caves.
    I wish we had more options for the way the story could end. And after going into NG + I wish we could utilize our current equipment we take into the NG to skip over the main campaign and just go straight to the end fight. We can get right up to it but without progressing the story we can’t gain access to the end.

    Ask anyone about the game and they will inevitably tell you a cool story about some adventure they had trying to do a quest!
    I once shot a massive ballista at a dragon from very far away and the bolt hit the weak spot somehow and it just….died…instantly. Went to go loot it, and a griffin wanted the prize so he bomb dove from the top of the sky box and almost killed my entire party. Little did he know that my warrior, now clad with a hammer with insane knockdown power, was ready to dole out some justice. Needless to say, he didn’t get that sweet dragon loot…I did… and then I immediately put it into my pawns inventory because it weighs a shit ton lol

    The only issue I see at the with DD2s game system after about 60 hrs, for those with your similar mindset, is that while dense, they give you a bit too much too fast in terms of stats and skills. What I mean by that is vocation progression can go very quickly if you know what your doing/playing the game as intended virtually unlocking everything one vocation has to offer in one or two gaming sessions.
    This inherently isnt a bad thing as it allows you to really explore your vocation quickly and switch to a new one fairly easily to try that new ones out as well. What makes it feel bad, at least for me in late game, is it gives you these master class skills that you just barely earned, or didnt even earn you just received by befriending a miester, without putting in an equivalent amount of effort mastering the class. Because of that there are a couple vocations that I have the master skills in that I can barely play, but because I have a game breaking ability, I dont really have to learn how to play it.
    For me thats fine because I dont really like using the meister skills nor do I intend to play those vocations anyways and am instead focusing in on the vocations I do enjoy, but from a content perspective, it really limits the amount of stuff I actually feel motivated to experiment with.

      content wise DD2 has a ton, and its for you to explore, but if you arent motivated to or you just want to gun and run the story its definitely not for you. but what im trying to say here is I wish it wasnt so clear that it was designed like that, I wish there was just a few more road blocks, a few more obstacles to just slow you're progression to force you to play differently rather than only "you're traveling for a while, try something new"

Plus it’s very generic and the repetitive mobs don’t make it any better. I don’t get the same sense of “I really want to explore this world” as I did with Elden Ring. I think the lack of special effect weapons (found 1 staff with silence and daggers with poison and that's it) is a bigger issue. I miss rusted weapons.

    Exploration is what DD excels at. It rewards you for exploring, whether it be finding new items or fighting new monsters. It encourages you to also revisit past areas because the world keeps evolving. The world feels alive. Games like Elden Ring, Witcher 3 and BG3 dont even have that. Thats what makes DD special imo.

    Dragons dogma is way more snappy than 2. The action has been turned down and the sequel is slower. I don't know how you came to that conclusion. That's the first thing I noticed with dd2 is that the movement is less snappy, that they don't turn on a dime, and it's not as responsive.

    The problem with Dragon’s Dogma 2 is that it disrespects your time. The way they handled the save system makes it as if the devs don’t care how much time you attributed to the game. I lost upwards of 10 hours when I loaded an Inn Save that immediately overwritten my manual save. A game that makes it easy to throw away hours spent is not a game for me. There are more games that makes deleting your save file harder and put more manual effort and consciousness. This game makes creating a new game as simple as 2 clicks which is bad. The game forces you to grind vocations and skillset. A far cry from the Souls series which takes skill and starting from scratch doesn’t feel daunting as it’s a learned experience.

    • @PillowEgg
      @PillowEgg 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@Willemguitar Why the f’ck are you defending a bad system? Elden Ring, CyberPunk 2077, Baldur’s Gate 3, Mass Effect Trilogy, Dragon Age and many others have done better save systems. And like many reviewers has said, if you get stuck in some geometry in the game world and it auto saves in a bad place, you are screwed, your only option is an inn save and you lose progress. That’s a scummy system. Don’t defend bad systems, it’s like defending the woke virus plaguing video games.

      I've been "stuck" in terrain twice, both times the game booted me out of the terrain after a couple of seconds. If you've somehow managed to get proper stuck then props to you, I've tried several times and been in perpetual fall in a terrain for many seconds as a result.
      I've also "lost" about an hour of playtime due to going back to inn saves because I messed up a quest or sold a piece of gear on accident.

    Agree with you. I was so excited about Starfield that I bought an Xbox and a physical copy of Starfield the day of release. And to my surprise, the exploration was the most disappointing portion of the game. Besides that, there was no enemy variety whatsoever. I think I remember maybe four different enemy types? It was ridiculous. The fact that your decisions make no impact on the overall arcing storyline really made everything feel inconsequential. With Dragon's Dogma 2 however, decisions actually matter, most importantly, the exploration has the perfect dopamine implication that I've ever experienced in a video game. I put about 65 hours into it. And I thought I would get bored trying to grind out the vocations. Come to find out. I love exploring every little nook and cranny and I'm realizing there's so much more that I hadn't seen my first time around. I haven't even finished and gone to new game plus yet because I want to uncover all of the map and find all the seeker tokens.
    Can say wholeheartedly that I have had a video game hit me like this since Halo 2 when I was much younger.

    There's two things i absolutely hate about DD2.
    They made so you basically cant solo the game at all. You could DD1 in all classes, DA included.
    The main reason for that is because of my next point...
    The loss gauge is the most ridiculous system they ever gave us. Its complete garbage.
    If i die, then fine, ill try again, but no... the loss gauge persisting after death is moronic.
    This game already lacks a dodge mechanic, and getting grazed is enough to make you stumble and fall over like a drunk anemic... you ARE gonna get that gauge accumulation every time.
    DD2 is a good game, but DD1 is a great game.
    Also... no Mystic Knight?? No Assassin?? Immediately worse than DD1

      There are so many campsites that once you actually start using them soloing doesn't seem to be an issue (except for trickster, unless there's some weird thing where a trickster can actually damage the Dragon). Then again you don't need to kill the Dragon so....

    Why does everyone associate stamina management with souls games? All sorts of games do that, Morrowind does that the most, Conan Exiles does that too, does that mean that survival games are souls-like? It's asinine to say the least. Does that also mean that Sekiro is not a souls-like?

      So can other classes, but only the ones you'd expect to be able to, a warrior in heavy armor couldn't be rolling around like a crazy person. But a thief dashing about makes perfect sense. It's immersive, which makes it better in some regards. And fighters can also evade damage by blocking it and countering which fits a realistic theme. I'm all for the DD2 systems.
